In this episode Glenn and Eric catch up after some hectic travel from recent weather issues. They do some news updates and also Eric had advice for new Patreon subscribers. Then they play an Oscar-themed round of “A Truth, a Lie, and a Mandela Effect” because it is the weekend of the 2025 Oscars. Then the guys tackle a topic which has come up many times in the past, but they've never actually dived into before: Simultaneous Impressions. They talk about different scenarios that can occur such as: some impressions stand alone, none stand alone, aggregation of features, and physical gaps or voids in an impression. They review the famous Mass v. Patterson case from 2005 that started the initial controversy in the field. They also have a chance to discuss John Black's JFI research article from 2006 and other source material on the subject. Reference: Black, J.P. John Arroyo is an assistant professor in the School of Planning, Public Policy, and Management at the University of Oregon. Professor Arroyo is an affiliated faculty member in the Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies department as well as in the Historic Preservation program at the UO in Portland. Glenn Langenburg and Eric Ray finally get back on track with a review of a recent article on GYRO markings. "Evaluating the Accuracy and Weight of Confidence in Examiner Minutiae Annotations" was written by Jeremy John and Henry Swofford and published in the JFI. The study measured whether examiners placed minutiae markers on true minutiae using Green, Yellow, and Red markers. It then compared the color choices of examiners against the color choices of the automatic LQMetric and DFIQI algorithms. Eric and Glenn will soon be publishing videos of themselves conducting comparisons, using GYRO, and discussing their similarities and differences. Keep an eye out for those coming soon. In this episode, Glenn and Eric interview Brendan Max, Chief of the Cook County Public Defender Forensic Science Unit in Illinois. They discuss his new article “Assessing Latent Print Proficiency Tests: Lofty Aims, Straightforward Samples, and the Implications of Non-Expert Performance” (Max, Cavise, and Gutierrez in JFI 2019;69(3)). Brendan shares his views on proficiency tests: are they meaningful? What about verifications in proficiency testing? What does it mean to ‘fail’ a test? How do lawyers and judges view proficiency tests? He describes his basic strategy for litigating forensic evidence and explains why the research in the field of latent prints is so critical. They then jump into the main discussion on the "Review of Several False Positive Error Rate Estimates for Latent Fingerprint Examination Proposed Based on the 2014 Maimi-Dade Police Department Study" by Madeline Ausdemore, Jessie Hendricks, and Cedric Neumann. On today's show fingerprint expert Eric Ray joins Felony Friday host John Odermatt. Eric Ray has been a Criminalist with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in the Latent Print Unit since 2007 and is a Certified Latent Print Examiner. Eric earned a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona. He is on the Editorial Board of the JFI and on the Special Committee on Latent Print Probability Modeling. Eric is also the Treasurer and Webmaster for the Arizona Identification Council. Eric has published and presented extensively on Reducing Erroneous Exclusions. Eric Ray has been a Criminalist with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in the Latent Print Unit since 2007 and is a Certified Latent Print Examiner. Eric earned a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona. He is on the Editorial Board of the JFI and on the Special Committee on Latent Print Probability Modeling. Eric is also the Treasurer and Webmaster for the Arizona Identification Council. Eric has published and presented extensively on Reducing Erroneous Exclusions.
