Jeff Mangahas Jeff Mangahas, winemaker, actually VP Director of Winemaking at Williams Selyem, joins Steve Jaxon in the studio for California Wine Country. Dan Berger is away today. His last time on this show was this episode of October 6, 2021. Williams Selyem is one of the most illustrious wineries in Sonoma County. This year will be their 44th vintage, specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The partners, Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started the winery in a garage in the town of Fulton.* They made a Pinot Noir in 1985 from grapes grown on the Rocchioli vineyard, and that won awards and recognition. It also started to put Russian River Valley on the map for Pinot Noir. They still source from Rocchioli, but they make 25 different Pinot Noirs, all different. Joe Castro is also in the studio, staying over from the previous segment, where he brought some victuals from his restaurant, The Bird. They taste the 2022 Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay. The vineyard is located at the top of the hill, above the town of Occidental, in western Sonoma County. It is a young wine and is pretty good now, but will do very well with 5 to 7 years of aging. Jeff started his professional career as a scientist with a degree in Molecular Biology, then worked in medical research. Wine started as a hobby and became a second career. He got a Master's degree at UC Davis then got some jobs with some great producers in Sonoma County including Dan Goldberg, from 2001 to 2005. In 2006 he became the winemaker at Hartford family winery and that led to the next step at Williams Selyem in 2011. He started working there with Bob Cabral, and he later took the reins himself. This year will be his 24th vintage in the Russian River Valley. “I live a dream… making these historic wines from this historic brand. (...) In the second half of the program, an old TV horror anthology has resurfaced after years of languishing in the tape trading underground of horror fanatics. Once only available in the form of poor quality bootlegs, Freddy's Nightmares is the forgotten Nightmare on Elm Street TV series that has recently experienced new life (and better quality) on the free (with ads) streaming service known as Tubi. Done in the style of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone, the show featured Freddy Krueger (played by Robert Englund of the film series) hosting bizarre and gruesome stories about his stomping grounds of Spirngwood, Ohio. Some of the episodes feature Freddy within the story while most only feature him in host segment. One particularly notorious episode, the pilot "No More Mr. Nice Guy", was directed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Tobe Hooper and acted as an origin story for Freddy Krueger and prequel to Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. With the series getting more attention thanks to it's being hosted on Tubi now, indie filmmaker Henrique Couto and David Denoyer have started a podcast in which they discuss each episode entitled Welcome to Primetime: A Freddy's Nightmares Retrospective. Who says you can't get more for less?Joe Castro Director, Producer, and Special Effects Artist, Joe Castro, born in San Antonio, Texas, began his career at age 15 when he was hired to create special effects make-up for a PBS affiliate and graduated to writing and directing his own feature films, in the 80's, when his parents invested in his career and bought him a portable VHS camera.In 1985, Joe won the National special effects make-up contest in Monsterland magazine. In 1989, Joe moved to Los Angeles, California to continue his career in filmmaking.In 1993, Joe produced and directed his first feature film, CEREMONY, shot on 35mm Panavision. The film was an apocalyptic horror thriller. This film won a Silver Award at the Worldfest Charleston Film Festival. In 1997, Joe produced his second Internationally distributed feature film, Legend of the Chupacabra on his parent's ranch.In 2001, Joe produced, directed, and created the special effects for the wildly, successful cult film, TERROR TOONS. This film has already spawned four sequels.Steven Escobar Born and raised in Edinburg, Texas. He finished his education by graduating from The University of Texas - Pan American with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with concentration in Radio/Television/Film.In 1992, Steven began Associate Producing the musical variety show, Budweiser's Dance Time in Texas which ran for 2 years as a syndicated television series. He went on to co-create the successful music series titled, Tejano Country.In 1996, Abraham Quintanilla (Q Productions, Inc.) contacted Steven to produce Latin music videos by such artists as Selena, Pete Astudillo, and Jennifer Pena. This lead to his involvement on the Warner Bros. Film, "Selena".Steven works as a picture editor on various reality shows which range from Fox's Trading Spouses and Nanny 911 to NBC's The Apprentice and The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.In 2007, Steven won a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Picture Editing for Reality Programming" for The Amazing Race.Both Joe and Steve are good friends of Odd's and they always have a great conversation.
