This week GM Alex Colovic joins me from his native Skopje, Macedonia, speaking to me on the "rest day" of the European Chess Championship, in which he is competing. Alex Colovic is a Grandmaster, blogger, author and newly elected President of the Association of Chess Professionals. Alex catches us up on the status of the tournament at the midway point, and from there we have a wide-ranging conversation which covers topics which range from his latest Chessable course, The Najdorf Sicilian Simplified, to why he loves studying the games of Jose Raoul Capablanca. I think that Alex’s love for and knowledge of chess and chess history is evident in our conversation. Read on for timestamps, links and GM Colovic’s contact info: 0:00- Intro and Alex’s breakdown of the ongoing European Chess Championship. On the day that we talked Alex was enjoying a break from the tournament 10:20- We discuss Alex’s brand new Chessable course, The Najdorf Sicilian Simplified. This includes the story of how he began to collaborate with Chessable, and why now is a good time to learn more about the storied Najdorf defense. In our conversation, Alex gives some updates on the theory of particular lines of the Najdorf, including the contributions that GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave made to the Poison Pawn Variation. The Karpov-Kasparov game that GM Colovic mentions can be seen here. 26:30- Alex’s chess improvement advice for club players. If you want instant results, Alex says, the first thing you should do is improve your calculation. He says that the fact that you are doing the work is more important than the tools that you use to do it. The viral Quora post that Alex wrote and that we reference can be read here. (In the interview, I erroneously said that Alex’s post got 67,000 views, but actually that particular post got 18,000 views. it is Alex’s Quora posts in total that got 67,000 views.) The study composer that Alex mentions who helped him finally achieve the GM title is Genrikh M. Kasparyan. For all of Alex’s book recommendations check out his blog posts here, here and here. The more beginner-oriented tactics books/courses that Alex mentions in our interview are Mastering Mates 1: 1,111 One-Move Mates by Jon Edwards, and Chess - 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games by Lazlo Polgar. For his own chess, Alex greatly enjoyed the Jonathan Rowson books, Understanding the Grunfeld, Seven Deadly Chess Sins, and Chess for Zebras 42:30- Why is Jose Raul Capablanca Alex’s favorite player? What is his favorite book about Capablanca? The game that Alex is referring to is this one. The footage of Fischer playing over a game can be seen here. 50:30- How and why did Alex just become President of the Association of Chess Professionals? How did he become involved with the FIDE Fair play commission? 58:30- Goodbye and contact info. Read Alex’s blog here, follow him on Twitter here and Facebook here. Since I am still dealing with a cold and still don’t want to be coughing into your ears for an interview, here’s the second Electric Pizza Concert, which was a Halloween show. This is a concert that I played on October 8th of 2018 with Power Cycle, an electronic trio that includes myself (Santiago Ramones), Breck McGough, and Jonathan Edwards. We’re all graduate music composition majors and we’re led by Dr. L. Keith White. Since this is a live recording, you can hear applause, talking, mistakes, and all the other things that can be heard at a live concert. You can watch the concert on Facebook through the UCO Jazz Lab page, which I would recommend, since there are a lot of visual elements that make up the show. The program is as follows: 00:16 - Electric Pizza Theme - Composed and performed by L. Keith White 08:20 - Prelude in Fear Minor - Adapted from Johann Sebastian Bach, improvised by Power Cycle 13:26 - Discomfort 2 - Composed and performed by Santiago Ramones 15:46 - Lullaby - Composed by Breck McGough, performed by Power Cycle 20:12 - Cocaine Nightmare - Composed and performed by Santiago Ramones 24:50 - Psychokinetoscope: Hommage a John Carpenter - Composed by Breck McGough (fixed media) 28:40 - A Ghost Story - Composed and performed by J.R. Edwards 32:31 - Nosferatu - Live scored/improvised by Power Cycle; short film edit by J.R. Edwards A note about Electric Pizza Theme: This is an omnisensory piece of music that includes hearing (music), seeing (looking at the performer and pizza), feeling (holding pizza), smelling (smelling pizza), and tasting (eating pizza). While this piece is performed, pizza is delivered to the audience. A note about Nosferatu: Jonathan cut down and made a version of the original Nosferatu film, which we live scored. You can find everything Jon Edwards does on his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tuneselectgo/You can find Breck’s music on his SoundCloud:https://soundcloud.com/breck-mcgough --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/santiagoramones/support

We dive into the weekly turd to discuss how a Buyer tried to go behind their agents back to purchase a For Sale By Owner. The seller did not want to pay the Broker fees and offered a discount to the buyer if they would go forward this way. We discuss the ethics of the buyer’s in this case, the importance of having representation, under what circumstances can the agent be fired, and will the agent get their commission anyway? Our “How to Act like an Adult” skit of the week is a great one. Listen in as Luis and Dave rehearse a recent phone call an agent was involved with. The seller of a home had put dry wall over the sewer line access restricting the ability of the sewer scope contractor to do his job. We discuss how this played out and if we think this was done intentionally or at best just a bone-headed move by the seller. Don’t miss the Feel Good story where we talk about a great situation in which an agent stepped up their game and contributed in a very positive manner to the community as a whole. We announce this week’s Hot Listings, CE classes, and Charity Spotlight. As always thank you so much for tuning in to the Rocky Mountain Real Estate Network.
