Welcome to the first of a 3-part series on the unique and yet also universal wounds that we experience as women.  We talk about where these wounds come from, going all the way back to the very first woman, Eve. We talk about our ability, as women, to be mothers, and the nuances of what that means theologically and also practically. We look at how and why our fertility and mentalities around fertility are the primary place that women experience attack. This ultimately means that our relationships suffer from these wounds: with God the Father, with members of the opposite sex, and also with fellow women. And although these wounds are universal, we see that these wounds show up differently for every woman. The only remedy is to give our wounds back to the Lord, at the foot of the cross and to ask the Lord for healing!Follow Alex on Instagram and at her blog https://www.joymamablog.com/. Welcome back to the podcast, Blake Brouillette! If you missed our previous conversation, check that out here!We talk about the services Christ in the City provides in the city of Denver. The purpose is twofold:  to form missionaries, and to serve the poor in the chronically homeless.  The hope is that this mission will expand beyond Denver into other communities in need!I share how "Blessing Bags", an idea Blake shared with me previously, has changed our family's life. We talk about what it means to see others not as strangers, but as someone who needs love. We also talk about the absolutely indispensable need for community as the basis of mission life (you can't serve strangers if you don't love the people you live with!) We also each share our experiences of thinking we could change the world, and being humbled by what we could learn from the poor. Blake shares some wisdom about finding your own Calcutta, and figuring out how to serve exactly where you are. If doing something about homelessness is on your heart, please donate to Christ in the City and help them serve and expand! Join Christ in the City on October 2nd for a Virtual Annual Celebration (check the website for details). Challenge from Blake: Look to your left. Look to your right. See who are the poor in your community, and find your own Calcutta! HEY YOU! Yep. You. Are you Pam Beesly, Kelly Kapoor, or Jim Halpert? Could you possibly be Dwight? No idea what I'm talking about? Much has been made–justifiably so–about the anemic diversity represented in film and television, most problematically when roles originally written for people of color are rewritten for white actors. So consider if you will the concept of a 5’ 4” woman of Indian descent writing and playing the part of a famously strapping white male actor – in 2002, no less. The off-Broadway play (that would be Matt & Ben, in case you were wondering) hardly seems like the breakout opportunity of a lifetime for anyone. But Vera Mindy Chokalingam, 23 years old and barely out of college at the time, is about as un-anyone as they come. Matt & Ben was named one of Time magazine’s “Top Ten Theatrical Events of the Year,” and its co-writer/co-star (better known these days as Mindy Kaling) praised by The New York Times for her fine, deadpan sense of the absurd and the vicious. As fateful showbiz stories often go, in the audience one night was producer Greg Daniels, who was working on an American adaptation of The Office. He hired Kaling as a writer-performer on the show. Make that the only female writer on a staff of eight, and soon its most prolific. “Your average writer, when they get really good, I know how they got it,” Daniels told The New York Times. “I can see the steps. But I love how with Mindy, I don’t see how she does it.” We have a speculation or two. Kaling grew up on Fawlty Towers and Saturday Night Live, and says she realized pretty early on that the only thing she really liked doing was writing dialogue. Listening to the characters on her shows, you get the feeling that there’s so much rapid-fire conversation looping in her head that it’s all she can do to keep up; no wonder Kelly Kapoor, Mindy Lahiri and their co-workers seem to spring fully formed like mini-Athenas from the crowded forehead of a comic Zeus. It also spills over into books (Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? And Other Concerns and Why Not Me?) and a Twitter feed as random and entertaining as it is followed – by more than 7.5 million fans. Kaling’s on-screen alter egos are at once reflections and antipodes of Kaling herself. They love and feed on the pop-culture they send up. They’re unapologetically self-involved and superficial, proof that Kaling has no problem being the target of her own gimlet-eyed humor. In its review of The Mindy Project’s first episode, The A.V. Club wrote, “What’s most intriguing about this project is just how harsh it is about its lead character, who is certainly not without flaws…Kaling has her eye on doing something more ambitious than the standard TV claptrap.” Say what you want about her characters, they are not clichés. Ambitious, demanding, egocentric, romantically messed up, yes, but not anything you’d find among the seven standard Hollywood-issue female roles she barbecued in a 2011 New Yorker piece. Which gives us high expectations for what she’ll do with her role in Sandra Bullock’s all-female remake of Ocean’s Eleven. High hopes, too, given how sorely comedy needs what she does. It is funny how the honesty we love in bold female characters can still unsettle us in the women who play them. And maybe that’s why there remain many who are reluctant to make waves. Kaling is not among them. Talking to her, you sense an entitlement, but it’s one of privilege earned – through talent, risk, constantly proving one’s place at the table, and mostly, very hard work. “I feel I can go head-to-head with the best white, male comedy writers out there,” Kaling has said. (And if you can convince an audience you’re Ben Affleck, why wouldn’t you?) Though she’s more than proven her point, let’s hope she’ll never stop making it.

Talk Paper Scissors

We’re so dashing excited about this episode! Diana finds herself talking about one of the simplest punctuation marks - the humble hyphen. There are no fewer than seven (seven!) different hyphen-like characters commonly used, including four different dashes, a mathematical minus sign, a catch-all stand-in called a hyphen-minus (a hyphenated hyphen!) and finally… the hyphen. Plot twists and turns take listeners on a roller coaster ride in Punctuation Park… and Diana tells a really bad joke about hyphens… and Kelly Kapoor is quoted. It’s pretty magical.

Dyskusje o Książkach

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2020 20:44

Chodzi oczywiście o serial The Office - wersja amerykańska, czyli krótko The Office US. Tak więc będę dzisiaj mówił o tych serialach, szczególnie tym amerykańskim oraz o książce: “The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s: An Oral History”, co można by przetłumaczyć jako: “The Office: Nieznana historia najlepszego Sticomu z 2000 opowiedziana w wywiadach”.Zacznę od książki. Niedawno zacząłem słuchać podkastu: “Office Ladies”, w którym dwie aktorki z The Office US omawiają kolejne odcinki serialu. Tamten podkast prowadzą Jenna Fischer czyli serialowa Pam Beesly oraz Angela Kinsey czyli serialowa Angela Martin. Początkowo ich audycje bardzo mi się podobały. Podawały wiele fajnych szczegółów odnośnie serialu. Niestety później poszły w kierunku historii typu “podczas kręcenia tego odcinka jadłam jogurt malinowy”, a drugi odpowiada “jak ty śmiesznie wypowiadasz słowa jogurt malinowy”. Wtedy wpadł mi w ręce audiobook “The Office Untold Story”.Podkast “Office Ladies” ma jedną zaletę. Prowadzą go autentyczne aktorki, które zapraszają innych aktorów. Tak więc można ponownie usłyszeć znajome głosy. Książka “The Office Untold Story” jest zbiorem wywiadów z aktorami, reżyserami, producentami itd. Opowiada jak Ricky Gervais i Stephen Merchant stworzyli The Office UK. Opowiada oczywiście przy pomocy wywiadów. Później przechodzi do Grega Danielsa czyli geniusza, który stworzył amerykańską wersję The Office. Christmas Special z dwoma odcinkami. The 40-Year-Old Virgin). The Office US wyróżnia właśnie zespół ludzi piszących scenariusz. The Office. Pojawili się w nim Jack Black, Jessica Alba and Cloris Leachman. To był kolejny moment gdy przybyli fani The OfficePóźniej sieci społecznościowe miały wpływ na losy postaci. Np. Niestety poszli chyba zbyt daleko w swoich uprzedzeniach i ten nowy serial trudno nazwać komedią.Nic chyba dziwnego, że teraz The Office US odkrywa młode pokolenie. Seriale takie jak The Office US czy The Wire miały swoich fanów, ale później odkrywają je kolejne pokolenia. Odkrywają je i oglądają. Tak ja definiuję klasykę. Tak więc w

Leah was invited as a guest on the Transforming Discipleship podcast, which released April 27th through Christianity Today's smallgroups.com.In this episode, Oliver Hersey is joined by Leah Darrow, author of “The Other Side of Beauty” and Kelsey Collister, who produces that podcast. Leah walks us through John 4, where Jesus encounters the Woman at the Well.Leah pointed out vs. 4 “And he had to pass through Samaria.”She said “What I love about this, is that this is the mission of God the Father. You are the mission of God the Father. Sometimes we can feel so forgotten in this world.”She drew attention to the fact that, in order for ministry leaders to disciple others, they have to have hard conversations with them. What can we learn from Jesus about how he questions the Woman at the Well? Leah said “Jesus poses questions to us, just like he does for the Samaritan woman, in which he is the answer.”Tell us what you want to hear about on Do Something Beautiful! Jarf is a fan of Kelly Kapoor. But he'd never want to be friends with someone who acted like her. So perhaps its because Mind Kaling took that role and transformed it into a memorable character that he finds her so endearing. But then is that still the character or a behind-the-scenes anecdote?
