Tonight, we'll read the opening to “Cranford”, a novel by the English writer Elizabeth Gaskell, first published in 1853. The work slowly became popular and from the start of the 20th century it saw a number of dramatic treatments for the stage, the radio and TV. The fictional town of “Cranford” is based on the author's childhood home town of Knutsford in England. The stories within portray the old-fashioned class snobbery prevalent in country towns at the time. Charles Dickens encouraged Gaskell to turn her stories into the completed novel. Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell audiobook. Cranford is the best-known novel of the 19th century English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published in 1851 as a serial in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. The fictional town of Cranford is closely modelled on Knutsford in Cheshire, which Mrs Gaskell knew well. The book has little in the way of plot and is more a series of episodes in the lives of Mary Smith and her friends, Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two spinster sisters. The "major" event in the story is the return to Cranford of their long-lost brother, Peter, which in itself is only a minor portion of the work... 

Mr. Harrison's Confessions by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell audiobook. It is asserted that the inspiration for Elizabeth Gaskell's marvellous stories of Cranford was her childhood home of Knutsford, a small town in Cheshire and to where she returned for a while as a young woman. This assertion is born out by an essay she wrote in 1849 entitled The Last Generation in England, in which she writes about "The town in which I once resided ...". There can be little doubt when reading this that it provided her with the template for Cranford. In 1851 the year she began to write Cranford, she also wrote a novella entitled Mr. Harrison's Confessions. It describes the life of a country doctor in a small provincial town. Mrs. Gaskell's model for this town could also only have been Knutsford which she knew and loved so well. The story revolves around the arrival in the town of a young doctor and the attempts of the ladies of the town to place his status within their society and of course to find him a suitable wife. It is often thought of as a prequel to Cranford Both of these pieces together with the novels, My Lady Ludlow and Cranford were used by the BBC to create the Television series Cranford in 2007.

On the 23rd of June 1958, the body of 61 year old Harry Baker was found wrapped in two sacks just over a wire fence by the A50 roadside near Knutsford in Cheshire. On Saturday 14th March 1970, a farmer who lived at Knowles Pit Farm had left his home at around 9:30pm. He was on his way to feed his sheep some hay and had quickly left the house to do this errand. Knowles Pit Farm was located close to Mere in Knutsford, a town in the county of Cheshire around 14 miles South West of the city of Manchester. As Ted Whittaker, the farmer, went to feed his sheep he noticed something unusual in a small group of trees. It looked like clothing had been left in the trees at first glance. When Ted got closer to the area however he discovered that it was not just clothing that he had found it was in fact the body of a woman lay face down in the trees. The body would turn out to be 18 year old Jacqueline Ansell-Lamb. 7 months later the murder of Barbara Mayo in very similar circumstances would lead some to believe that these cases were possibly linked to the same killer. Full Show Script [permit only] EVO: Today is  the final day of our stay in Knutsford. As you've heard and seen, we've made fast and hopefully long lasting friends with of many of the locals.  SHE: According to those friends, we've achieved minor celebrity status. More than once this week, we were approached by locals stating "Oh, you're the American's everyone is talking about." Except they said it in an authentic English accent. Not my poor facsimile. Last night at open mic night, as song after song was dedicated to us, the performers we'd met were telling the audience to follow our blog and listen to this podcast. Crazy! EVO: Hey, if we have to get new listeners and readers one small English town at a time, I'll take it. We didn't know what to make of Knutsford when we first arrived, with it's odd mix of old money, nuevo riche, farmers, and regular blokes. But it's turned out to be an amazing experience, and one we'll likely come back for. Because they like us. They really like us! If you visit Knutsford, mention you're a friend of ShEvo. They'll likely show you a great time, too. SHE: Speaking of Friends of Shevo, we finally got the postcards sent out. Yes, I know you're sick to death hearing  us talk about those damned post cards. But they really were instrumental to our minor celebrity status, as Evo recounted as we were walking out of the grocery store-cum-post office after licking 32 stamps. [post post cards] EVO: All debauchery aside, we are ostensibly a travel podcast. A strange one, to be sure, but we do get out to see the sights and attractions near by, and like to share them with you. Sometimes we have some really odd experiences to share, like the White Nancy. It'a a monument, of sorts, that's at the top of a very tall hill in Macclesfield, about 30 minutes east of Knutsford. And you know what very tall hills mean. More heavy breathing. [white nancy] SHE: The poem Evo didn't recognize was the Ode To Remembrance, written in 1914  to commemorate the fallen British soldiers from World War 1. The original White Nancy structure built almost a century before, to commemorate the winning of the battle of Waterloo. Why lyrics from an Oasis song are stenciled on the other side is anyone's guess. EVO: We have one last clip to play, but I need to do two things very quickly. First, a huge thanks to Paul Fischer for telling us how bassey our bed music was while listening in his car. That should be fixed, Paul. If any of you hear anything that's odd or you just don't like, please tell us. We're only 12 episodes in and don't have the benefit of the full studio with us. Please, let us know what's not working or what we can improve upon. Lastly, before I let Sheila intro our final clip, it seems our adoption of the moniker The Opportunistic Travelers was spot on. SHE: Now, we're just going to make you hungry. Everyone we've met raves about Seven Sisters Ice Creamery. It's just about a mile out of town, and quite popular. Families love it, because they let the kids pet the actual dairy cows the produce the milk. We skipped the cow petting and got straight to the ice-cream selection. Again, sorry for the salivation you're about to experience. [seven sisters] EVO: And if that doesn't make you jealous -- because lets face it, good ice cream isn't all that hard to find -- we got to see the solar eclipse this morning. The clouds broke just long enough for us to see the maximum coverage, and it was, at it always is, an amazing sight. Full Show Script [idiots] EVO: We're still in Knutsford, a small town outside of Manchester. That strangely enough has a McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Land Rover dealership. Crazy!  SHE: This last week took us to several different cities in north western England. In Chester, we drank and ate at  The Brewery Tap (https://www.flickr.com/photos/sheila_dee/16147043674/) . They have a decent beer selection. Perhaps one day we'll develop a better appreciation for this "Real Ale" stuff. EVO: But like all pubs in England, they also have Sheila's favorite -- fish and chips -- and a few oddities on the menu that looked interesting to me. They don't look that great to Sheila, which probably threw her off when I suggested she place our order: [paying attention] EVO: So now, who's not paying attention. SHE: Uh huh. This probably isn't a battle you want to have, Mr. Forgetful. EVO: Probably not. But the black putting was as delicious as it was beautiful. I posted a photo on Instagram. Yes, I'm that tourist. And the fish and chips were great, if not monstrous in size. They grow their haddock pretty big over here.  SHE: Evo's into strange food. Being a vegetarian, my choices are limited. Nothing that flies or walks on the land. So when he suggested we go to a place that sells meat pies, I was dubious. Even the vegetarian options didn't sound all that great. Pie, is pie. As in cherry. And chocolate. And now, as it turns out, mushrooms and asparagus? Oh, and then mash and peas came up, too. [mash and peas] EVO: The establishment we visited was called Pi. That's P.I. not P.I.E. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have geometry references in the building, but such is life. What they did have, was an excellent beer selection, fantastic pies, and lovely vegetarian gravy, that Sheila totally missed out on. [gravy] SHE: You can keep the gravy, as I know I'm not a fan. What I am a fan of, however, is Thai food. And since we're going to be spending three months in Thailand not long from now, we needed to visit the consulate to sort our our Visas. EVO: Not being super experienced in dealing with consulates -- as in we've never visited one -- we weren't sure what to expect. Would we have to convince the Thai ambassador we were worthy of staying in their country that long? Well.., no we wouldn't. The process was quite easy, thanks to the extremely helpful visa officer David Hughes from the Royal Thai Consulate. And if that doesn't sound like a Thai name to you... [double entry] SHE: With David's help, we walked out with our Thai visas, set up to stay all the way through the end of September if we so choose. Nothing like a visit to southeast Asia in the middle of the rainy season! Still, it'll be warm. And we're ready for that! EVO: Monday, the 16th of March, marks the three month anniversary of the ShEvo Studios World Tour. Six countries visited. Over 10,000 kilometers traveled. Two hours and 15 minutes of produced audio for you to enjoy. And some 40 hours of raw audio slogged through to find those two hours of content.  SHE: The good news is that we've also experienced over 90 brand new beers since we've been out of the country. We've dined at over 50 pubs and restaurants, and met countless new friends. Evo and I are loving this adventure, and we're thrilled you've decided to tag along.  EVO: But there's a little uncertainty about the scale and relevance of this project. I'll explain in the next clip but it's a little noisy. But this is really important to us, so we hope you'll struggle through the muddy audio.  [existential crisis]  SHE: So that there's no confusion: we're not stopping. Nor are we changing the format anytime soon. But we do think about what we're doing and how it fits in with the larger ecosystem of content. This show, and even our website, doesn't quite fit the mold. No problem for either of us, as we like being different. But it...

Full Show Script [confused] EVO:  This week's show is going to be short and sweet. As much as I really wanted our 10th episode to be The Perfect Show, it's just not going to happen this week. SHE: It's not that great things didn't happen to us this week. It just that, well... we kinda forgot to record them. EVO: We, apparently, are poor audio journalists. Did we record either of the two extremely painful "sports massage" sessions I had with Rowan at Elite Health? No. We did not.  SHE: Did we record us as we experience the incredibly flavorful beer and surprisingly good food we found at Brew Dog in Manchester? No. We did not. EVO: Instead, we have hours of pub background noises punctuated with my incessant coughing, forty-five minutes of wind blustering across our microphones, and several sessions of us calling the dogs back from various perceived dangers. SHE: (Please note that  dogs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/sheila_dee/16042763074/)  weren't really in any danger. We're good pet and house sitters, we promise!) EVO: The one day - ONE DAY - we did get good audio from this week, was in the Bull's Balls. Er.. Head. Yeah. Bulls' Head. Sorry. SHE: Still not funny... The Bull's Head is a lovely pub in Mobberly, England about five miles away. While we were waiting for our food, the conversation drifted, as it often does, to Evo waxing poetically about some random thought his brain wouldn't let go of. This time, the topic was ancestry. [ancestors] EVO: We made the short drive to The Bull's Head for two reasons: Good food, and good beer. Well... good beer by English standards. But to our palates... [fear] SHE: Apparently, there's a difference between Real Ale and craft beer. We're fans of the latter, but after a couple weeks, we've yet to acquire an appreciation for the former. So while the beer didn't set our tastebuds on fire, the food at the Bull's Head lived up to every expectation. Evo raved about the bangers and mash, and I loved every bit of my fish and chips. And then... something strange happened that we're still coming to terms with. [peas]  EVO: So... yeah. Peas. See? You're changing our tastebuds already, England  SHE: Two things before we go: We're busy filling out postcards for everyone who signed up in February. Going forward, that's our plan: to get all of the postcards sent out by the first weekend on the next month. So if you've been waiting, they're on the way! If you signed up in March, your postcard will be in the batch we send out the first week of April. Thanks for your patience as we figure all this out. I won't go so far as to say we're homesick, but it would be nice to hear a few familiar voices now and again.
