This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
In this episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1999 to pick a teen high school romantic comedy loosely based on one of the more controversial plays by history's most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Shakespeare is of course ubiquitously revered as the greatest writer the English language has ever known, but it's worth asking from time to time, did any of his plays contain motorcycle stunts, ska music, outdoor paintball, high school students inexplicably dressed as cowboys, Seattle's Fremont Troll sculpture, a large penis drawn on the face of the head elf from The Santa Clause, or Larry Miller rattling off hip-hop slang? Tragically, no, they did not. But, luckily for literature lovers the world over, the writers of The House Bunny and the director of the Martin Lawrence vehicle Black Knight eventually came along to correct these grievous oversights on the Bard of Avon's part. Friend of the Show Patrick Perot (bass player for Rural Route Nine, official house band of Load Bearing Beams) stops by to preach the gospel of his favorite movie, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). And he's right to! It's a lovely and very funny romantic comedy from back when Hollywood still made those. The chemistry between Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger! The, uh, good efforts given by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik! And best of all: Krumholz, Krumholz, Krumholz. A real-life high school teacher, Patrick is also here to school us on how accurate a representation this is of high school. What grade would he give Kat (Julia Stiles) for her sonnet? And how many students has he had to stop from singing a song over the football stadium's loudspeakers? Also, it's a night recording, so Laci's in her cups. That always makes things interesting. Send us a Text Message.Katie and Bridget start a business (that they label as just a club) as they re-watch the 90's movie: The Baby-Sitters Club! Come along as we meet all of the 10-13 year old girls of the for-profit Baby-Sitters Club - BSC for short. We've got Kristy, the leader of the club, who has to deal with her absentee father attempting to come back into her life and RUIN it UGH; Mary Anne, the girl who does dress like an old lady and probably should dump her red flag of a boyfriend Logan; Dawn, who likes to pick up trash and may or may not be Bridget; Claudia, the girl who failed science and has to attend summer school and maybe it was because the girls keep having meetings in her room preventing her from studying(!?); Stacey, the girl with diabetes who thinks that's the biggest problem in her life, instead of, you know, attempting to date a child predator; and then Mallory and Jessi... They're the other ones! One magical summer teaches these girls that friendship is truly magic... As well as teaches them when we should all call the police! Released in 1995, it stars Schuyler Fisk, Bre Blair, Rachael Leigh Cook, Larisa Oleynik, Tricia Joe, Stacy Linn Ramsower, Zelda Harris, and Ellen Burstyn.
“How Do I Loathe Thee? Let Me Count Ways?” The Back To The Blockbuster team is taking on William Shakespeare with a modern day twist as we look back at 10 Things I Hate About You for its 25th anniversary! Directed by Gil Junger in his film directorial debut and written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, the film stars Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, David Krumholtz, Gabrielle Union, Susan May Pratt, Allison Janney, and Larry Miller. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew, the film follows new student Cameron James who is smitten with Bianca Stratford and attempts to get bad boy Patrick Verona to date her antisocial sister Kat in order to get around her father's strict rules on dating. As you know, it's not a look back at a 90s classic without our frequent guest, Mark J. Parker, host of the Release Date Rewind Podcast, so he's also joining in on the fun as we look back at one of the best teen films of its time. Links For Guests: Release Date Rewind Linktree
Happy 25th anniversary to the 1999 classic, 10 Things I Hate About You! We've talked about Kim Tillman's work on the pod before (Doppelgänger, Wild Things). This time, she created thoughtful and fashionable costumes for the Seattle teens in this reimagined Taming of the Shrew. Kim dressed Julia Stiles's character in low-slung pants, cropped camo, and Frankenflops, opposite her sister's (Larisa Oleynik) ultra-girly style. Heath Ledger (in his breakthrough role) got the stylish bad-boy treatment in custom-dyed tank tops and PVC pants. We also discuss the iconic prom looks, name the film's Surprise Style Icon, revisit Andrew Keegan's alleged cult (and then fantasize about becoming cult leaders ourselves). The gang talks to the final piece of the Kooshlings Commercial Club, and a memorable BMW guest star, when Larisa Oleynik joins the podcast in all her ‘90s glory. A long time pal of Rider's, Larisa played Shawn's first love interest on Boy Meets World and, when she opens up her diary, it appears art imitated life. Hear some unforgettable stories from Larisa's time as Alex Mack, and from the set of “10 Things I Hate About You,” while one story about a limo ride with Danielle to the Mall of America brings back a wave of memories. Also, you won't believe who was her first kiss! Spoiler alert; we all saw it. Find out more on the newest episode of Pod Meets World!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Then, we discuss the movie's place within the lineage of late-90s films, how it adheres to the rebellious sensibilities of the era, and (notably) the ways it disregards them. Finally, we talk about a recent article in The Washington Post which, coincidentally, references the film in its examination of the current proliferation of celebrity veneers, unattainable standards of beauty, and how these trends desecrate the authenticity and natural beauty that once defined the genuine sexual energy in media from decades past. Read 'Have you noticed that everyone's teeth are a little too perfect?' by Jessica M. Goldstein at The Washington Post.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

We're watching 10 Things I Hate About You this week! It's one of the least problematic 90s rom coms we've had with some of our favorite 90s/00s actors. How are we going to feel about this one? Our final rambling conclusions may surprise you. 10 Things I Hate About You is loosely based on "Taming of the Shrew." Pretty and popular Bianca Stratford can't date until her older sister, the tempestuous Kat Stratford, does. Too bad Kat doesn't want anything to do with the unwashed miscreants who attend her school. “Bad Girl” (November 12, 1996) If you were not the target audience (and target age) for this live-action Nickelodeon series, you may be shocked to find out that The Secret World of Alex Mack is a sci-fi show. It's basically Spider-Man with a baby gay lead protagonist, played with remarkable aplomb by Larisa Oleynik. We're joined by Katie Mathewson, screenwriter on Hawkeye and the breakout hit Jury Duty, to discuss how very queer this show is — and in particular this episode, which plays out like a mid-90s lesbian teen romcom. Check out Lizzie Borden (no, not that one), who directed this episode and may have played a role in giving it its queer vibe. If you thought this episode was about the incredible, iconic, life-altering late 90's rom-com based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, and Larisa Oleynik, we hate to disappoint you. Jane and Brandon have created itemized lists about each other and they're ready to fight on air. Press play to find out if we're kidding or not!
We're BACK and ready to rock n' roll with our favorite romantic comedy, 10 things I hate about you! This movie truly has every niche within a niche, grand gesture, iconic line, and the best angry girl music of the indie rock persuasion we could hope for. If you wanted to hear Sara absolutely butcher some Shakespeare this is the episode for you! Starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, Larisa Oleynik, and Alison Janney. Cheers!

The AMPM VIDEO crew is going back to highschool again(!) with this weeks film 10 Things I Hate About You a 1999 American romantic comedy film directed by Gil Junger and starring Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. The screenplay, written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, is a modernization of William Shakespeare's late-16th-century comedy The Taming of the Shrew, retold in a late-1990s American high school setting. In the story, new student Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) is smitten with Bianca (Oleynik) and, in order to get around her father's strict rules on dating, attempts to get bad boy Patrick (Ledger) to date Bianca's ill-tempered sister, Kat (Stiles). The film is named after a poem written by Kat about her bittersweet romance with Patrick. Much of the filming took place in the Seattle metropolitan area, with many scenes shot at Stadium High School in Tacoma. As always, we talk about the worst and best actors of the movie and Ryan tries to guess if this film, that he has never seen apparently, holds up to our adult standards.
