A small-town murder in rural Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania is examined by author Taj Magruder in his Milford House Press debut, In the Day of Trouble. On March 17, 1934, a woman named Susan Mummey was shot and killed by a known assailant. Her murder was due to her being known as the Witch of Ringtown Valley, which Magruder covers in detail for the first time. For years Mummey was rumored to practice magic from her isolated farm home, and her battles with family, neighbors, and the law were known. When detectives extracted a confession from her assailant, the revelations that followed not only shocked the county, but far beyond. As quickly as the excitement and interest in Mummey's murder and what she was alleged to have done grew, it faded away. Magruder's research into the historical record, press reports, and insights from survivors of those involved has resulted in a fascinating look at a strange time in American history. Magruder examines Mummey's life, and her connections to "powwow," the Pennsylvania Dutch form of mysticism, faith healing, and spirituality. He also looks into how Mummey came to be misunderstood, the mental disturbance of her killer, which may make the reader examine their own selves. A Baltimore native, Taj Magruder has worked in state and local government. A graduate of Penn State University with a degree in political science, he lives in the Greater Philadephia area with his cats, Benji and Roxie.
This conversation covers the basics of American elections, including the role of the Constitution, the Electoral College, and potential ways to eliminate or reform it. The Electoral College is a system used to elect the President and Vice President, where each state is granted a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress. The winner-takes-all approach in most states can result in winning the Electoral College but losing the popular vote. Follow us on Instagram and TikTokResources To Learn More:Davis, J. EPSIODE 95 | Bodyguard of Lies: The Ghost Army & Wartime Deception More than 100 million soldiers took part in WWII, but not all of them were fighting with guns. There was obviously a lot of administration and infrastructure to deal with, there were codebreakers and spies, and there were even some who engaged in secret deception to trick the enemy. This episode is not abouts ghosts, but rather the Ghost Army. No, not a battalion of unstoppable undead like Aragorn brings with him against the forces of Mordor, but a dirty tricks tactical deception unit the Allies deployed in Europe near the end of the war to fool Axis commanders. Because, as the saying goes, all's fair in love and war. This episode is partly a cynical attempt to lure in military history fans, but these are also really interesting stories. And you might consider them to have been, in fact, conspiracies, ones that were successful, by and large. Like what we do? According to an oft-cited survey, over 65 million Americans are considering receiving an aesthetic treatment for the first time. Nick Magruder wants to make aesthetics more accessible for these consumers — and he may have found a way to do it.Drawing on his experience as Co-Founder and CEO of FriendMedia (now vrtly.ai), where he built an innovative platform focused on delivering a seamless in-practice marketing platform to medical aesthetic providers, Nick is the new Co-Founder and CEO of True Aesthetics. The stated mission? "To lower barriers to entry for self-confidence, fight against stigmas, and democratize medical aesthetics." As for what that means in practical terms, take the example of the so-called "liquid nose job" — a nonsurgical procedure arguably overlooked and under-marketed that yet offers an excellent entry point. By getting consumers educated, engaged, vetted, and into seats, True Aesthetics is piloting a new white-glove model for third-party patient acquisition under the banner of their first direct-to-consumer brand, TrueNose. The goal is to set a precedent for continued success in other areas:• Identify a niche procedure and build a consumer brand around it.• Drive awareness through various digital avenues.• Streamline conversion with AI-driven online consultations. • Partner with financing companies to pre-approve prospective patients and deliver qualified patients on demand. We sit down with Brad Kowitz of TrailRecon to discuss how to get started driving more technical, 4WD-themed “trails.” What we're thinking here is that there may be people who have traveled the entire length of the Pan-American Highway but have never considered attempting a challenging 4WD trail in the U.S. like the Rubicon, Magruder, or Colorado's famous Black Bear or Imogene Passes. We decided to reach out to Brad to help all who can relate get started down the trail!Brad jumps right in to share what he has learned about taking a variety of 4WD vehicles into America's backcountry, from fully-built Jeeps to Sprinter Vans, offering tips on how to have fun getting started safely and responsibly. To dig further into this topic, we explore the oft-underrated capabilities of O.E.M. vehicles and why it's important to get to know your vehicle as it is before jumping into extensive modifications and accessorizing. Listen in as Brad defines what a “trail” is, exactly, and what you can learn from how the U.S.F.S. identifies the roads it manages throughout our national forests. You will learn how to find trails in your area to get started on, off-road communities to learn from, and classes and courses you can take to improve your off-road driving skills. We also chat a bit about the popular “BDRs” (Backcountry Discovery Routes) now found in the U.S., and how these can be a great opportunity for those interested in getting started in vehicle-based, off-road adventure. Finally, Brad has some fun sharing some harrowing stories of his own adventures and misadventures along his path toward becoming an experienced off-roader and why he has come to push back against peer pressure when it comes to choosing his trails.Whether you're an experienced off-roader looking to get more into overland-style wheeling or an experienced overlander excited about hitting up more technical 4WD trails, you will find something of value in this episode with Brad Kowitz, who has found a happy middle ground within these two pursuits.See Full Show Notes HERE!Watch the Video Version of this Podcast Episode HERE!

We often think of cemeteries as separate worlds unto themselves. But people buried at Confederate graveyards were surely connected to people at the African burial grounds, and the cemeteries reveal the intimacy of their connections. Ryan Smith and his students have been transformed by tending to cemeteries over the past 20 years. And: After Pearl Harbor, the United States Navy needed land for bases and training. Former William & Mary PHd student Travis Harris says the African American neighborhood of Magruder near Yorktown, Virginia was just one of the many mostly black communities forced out to make way for U.S. military bases. Later in the show: Award-winning journalist Brian Palmer grew up hearing about Magruder, his father's boyhood neighborhood that was bulldozed to make way for a US Naval base. An old picture led Brian and his wife Erin Palmer back to Magruder and across the state tracking where his ancestor was enslaved. After moving to Richmond, the couple got involved in restoring a cemetery where Brian has more ancestors.

After his distinguished service during the war, Magruder found himself at the Air War College located at Maxwell field in Montgomery, Alabama. His class was populated by what the U.S. military considered “the best of the best” and included ranks from lieutenant colonels all the way to generals. Magruder's son related the story, as told to him by his late father, of the instance where Magruder and his classmates were all led to a room to offer advice on a “...strategic decision of the utmost urgency and importance regarding military and political planning.” They were then shown, what they were told was, pieces of an interplanetary craft that had been recovered by the U.S. Military and shipped from an Air Force base in Ohio. Magruder would add more to the story, when on his deathbed, that not only did the military keep recovered craft at this secretive military base, but also the bodies of the extraterrestrial pilots of these craft.
