You have so many questions about why these punks keep behaving the way they do. Before we pass judgment on the parents, schools or the community, we’ll talk with an expert and focus on where we should be directing our attention.
Over 6 million men suffer from depression per year, their suicide rate is four times higher than women and they're more likely to turn to substance abuse as a coping mechanism for mental health issues. These statistics raises a question: "Are men misunderstood?" The notion that men are exempt from pain, emotions, or empathy beyond themselves has shaped a distorted view and narrative about men, resulting in being overlooked and misunderstood. This misconception extends from their closest relationships to societal and cultural norms, creating a narrative that often fails to recognize the depth of men's emotional lives and experiences. On this week's podcast join me as I talk with Licensed Family & Marriage Therapist, Jonathan Gustave. Join us as he talks about being abandoned by both his parents, the challenges faced by the men he works with, and the barriers men encounter in expressing their emotions post-divorce. Women's sports are certainly having a moment and with more eyes on women's sports, comes more scrutiny and pressure. The new book, "The Price She Pays: Confronting the Hidden Mental Health Crisis in Women's Sports—from the Schoolyard to the Stadium" explores this crisis in women's athletics from early childhood exploration to elite-level competition, up to retirement. Authors Katie Steele and Dr. Tiffany Brown of @Athletesmentalhealthfoundation are both Licensed Family and Marriage Therapists who work with athletes in their practice and have noticed the unique pressures that female athletes have faced to be thin, but not too thin, to be aggressive, but not too aggressive, to be strong and muscular, but heaven forbid you're too muscular. It's not surprising that female athletes are apt to suffer greatly from disordered eating and substance abuse, sexual abuse, racism, depression and anxiety, self -harm and suicidal ideation. This new book seeks to answer the question of WHY? Why has this been woven into women's sports and is the system too broken to fix? Katie and Tiffany don't think so and this book serves as a wonderful resource for athletes, coaches, parents, and other therapists to provide answers and help before it's too late. The profiles of athletes they share are powerful and that's where the “I could never do that” theme resonates. Despite their fears of retribution, punishment, or damage to their reputation, these women featured in the book all chose to share their experiences for future generations of female athletes who we all want to see thrive. HOW TO DEAL WITH ADULT CHILDREN DURING A DIVORCE. EP 99. HOST: Beverly Price, Divorce & Empowerment Coach GUEST: Linda Hershman, Licenced Marriage and Family Therapist SUMMARY: In the tumultuous process of divorce, our focus tends to gravitate toward the younger ones caught in the midst of it all, inadvertently sidelining the experiences of adult children, who can also be profoundly affected. Adult children are often unfairly perceived as resilient and self-reliant individuals capable of weathering any storm, a misconception that discredits their feelings and emotional experiences during their parents' separation. In this episode of Her Empowered Divorce, your Host, Beverly Price, talks to Linda Hershman, a returning guest who is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist and the author of Gray Divorce. They discuss this lesser-explored topic: gray divorce and its impact on older children and why acknowledging the vulnerability of adult children and providing them with the support they need is as crucial as safeguarding the interests of the younger ones.Divorce doesn't have to be a death sentence. With the right support and guidance, you can move through the process with knowledge, skills, and confidence. If you'd like to schedule a complimentary private consultation, reach out to Beverly at: https://beverly-price.as.me/Consultation. Visit https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/her-empowered-divorce/id1635143315 to access the entire archive of Her Empowered Divorce episodes, and while you're there, please subscribe, rate, and review our show! KEY TAKEAWAYS: What is the phenomenon of adult children and divorce? Divorce's impact on adult children is considered part of ambiguous losses. These are losses that are not recognized by society as losses and for which there is no community support. It's not simple for adult children of divorce (ACODs); they experience many losses, such as family traditions, financial losses, and broken promises, that may devastate them. Listen to them, ask them, validate their feelings, and encourage them to get their own support. Why is parent splitting when children are first going to college the worst time ever? Going to college is a transition time, and divorce impedes this transition. Children get stuck with one leg at school and the other at home and are constantly worrying about what is going on at home. What is the financial implication of divorce on ACODs? So many adult children organize their lives around their parents' promises, but they are broken by divorce and loss of childcare.Regardless of your child's age, don't put them in the middle of your divorce. Your children are your children, not your friends; do not lean on them for any support, get your own support system in place, and don't look to your adult children to parent you. NOTABLE QUOTES:People tend to assume that because ACODs are adults, they have their own lives, and they can understand what is happening and deal with it, but in reality, ACODs suffer very different and sometimes even worse losses in the divorce process than their younger counterparts. (Linda)Remember, even though they are adults, they will always be your children; don't lean on them as if they were your friends. Don't complain about the other spouses or make your children feel sorry for you that they become the parent-to-parent and fix you. (Beverly)The worst time for parents to split up is when their kids are first going off to college. Going...

Eve Lipchik about the beginning of Solution Focus. In today’s episode, we talk with Eve Lipchik, Co-Founder of the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee and the Solution Focused approach, Author, Certified Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist, about what fascinated her with Solution Focus at the beginning, how Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer met in Palo Alto, how they started the BFTC – the Brief Family Therapy Center – in Milwaukee, how they looked at the recordings of the sessions, tried out new things, and learned from their clients. She mentions how Steve de Shazer conceptualized what they were doing, what and who helped to promote Solution Focus, and how they learned and moved from the ecosystemic approach to Solution Focus. Check out how the question what clients don’t want to change led them to Solution Focused thinking, how they analyzed the conversations with the questions „What worked?“ and „What didn’t work?”, how scaling and the miracle question emerged out of their work and were refined. Learn more about the different backgrounds and styles of the founding members of BFTC and how she perceives the newer developments of Solution Focus. She mentions the importance of working with a philosophy to get beyond technique and the importance of constant learning and immersion in Solution Focus. Check out how she values emotions in Solution Focused conversation and her message to Solution Focused practitioners: Don’t mix Solution Focus with other things, commit to one method. And she also gave us a challenge of the week: Think about what it is you need to overcome to feel that you are more confident and adapted doing Solution Focus. Payal is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist hailing from New Jersey but now settled in North Carolina to start her own counseling practice, Manu Counseling (@manucounseling). Payal has treated numerous clients affected by traumas such as mental illness, sexual assault, and domestic violence - all of which are also prevalent in the Desi community but more repressed from conversation than they should be. The more we learn about the addicted mind, the more we can begin to understand how trauma, disorders, and addictions really are interrelated. Today, we are thrilled to take that exploration to a personal level through the eyes of Janet Whitney. Janet is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist, but she is also a devoted mother. No mom would ever want to walk with their child through a life-threatening illness, even less so when it is something as slippery as an eating disorder. Since she was very young, Janet’s daughter, Hannah, has battled anorexia and eating disorders in a slow fight to recovery. By supporting her daughter through a long healing journey, Janet now wants to share her unique insight into the inner-workings of recovery and therapy. Recovery from eating disorders and addiction is similar: so similar that Janet has used her own life experiences to inform and shape her own practice. Today, it is time to get out of the theoretical exploration and into the personal. The insights to be learned here are not to be underestimated. * Exploring the similarities of food disorders and other addictions. * Janet shares her daughter’s story and struggle with an eating disorder. * Changing the narrative around eating disorders. * The time it takes to get through a disease like eating disorders. * The role of trauma in addiction. * A close look at the Conscientious Dissenter study to see the effects of starvation in the body. * Self-care and dealing with your own anxiety while being a safety zone for loved ones. * The factors that played a role in Hannah’s recovery. * A call for parents to help their child while they can! Tough love can save their life.
