Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD) is a family disease, affecting not only “trans kids” but parents and siblings too. Therapist, coach, consultant, and educator Stephanie Winn returns to Heterodorx to illuminate some of the hazards parents and other family members navigate: victimhood as identity, drama triangles, destabilization, enabling secondary gain, estrangement, extreme defensiveness, exacerbating relationship difficulties, “game-able heuristics”, and the trifecta of social contagion. Cori and Nina talk a little about their own family difficulties, while Stephanie describes her course curriculum for parents. In this life, there's no perfect parent. Indeed, there's no perfect person. But there are two perfect people: your co-hosts, Cori and Nina. Happy Holidays from Heterodorx! Today's guest is very meaningful to me and probably requires no introduction. Dr. Heather Heying is the reason I know about detransitioners and am doing half the things I'm doing. An evolutionary biologist and animal behaviorist, world traveler, podcast co-host, writer, mentor to many, mother of two, agreeable contrarian, and all-around interesting person, Dr. Heying can easily be considered one of the greatest thinkers of our time.It was tough to narrow down what to focus on in a conversation with someone so influential, so I selected a few of the recurring themes that form the foundational principles for much of her work. We discuss the concepts of culture and consciousness, and how they shape our understandings of progress and tradition, liberalism and conservatism. We delve into the metaphorical idea of Chesterton's fence, which represents the importance of understanding the purpose and value of something before discarding it. And we examine several “Chesterton's fences” in modern life that have been impacted by what Heather often calls “hyper-novelty.” What do we lose when we stop sitting around a campfire together, telling stories and making music?Heather Heying is an evolutionary biologist who earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan, has been a visiting Fellow at Princeton University, and was a tenured professor at The Evergreen State College. She has been invited to speak about science, higher ed, the evolution of sex and consciousness, and the culture wars, in venues as varied as the U.S. Department of Justice, the Krishnamurti Institute, Joe Rogan, and Oxford University. Her first book, Antipode, is based on her life in Madagascar while studying the sex lives of poison frogs. Her second book, co-authored with husband Bret Weinstein, is A Hunter-Gatherer's Guide to the 21st Century: Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life. A New York Times best-seller, the book provides an evolutionary toolkit for living a good and honorable life as a modern ape. She also writes Natural Selections on Substack, the Field Notes column for County Highway, and co-hosts with Bret a popular weekly livestream on the DarkHorse podcast.Natural Selections blogDarkHorse PodcastX @HeatherEHeyingHeather's books are available in my bookshop or via the embedded Amazon affiliate links. When it comes to radical gender ideology, open dialogue, evidence-based decision-making, and the protection of individuals' well-being, particularly youth, are of utmost importance. Dr. Ben Carson is joined by Stephanie Winn, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist featured in the documentary “No Way Back: The Reality of Gender-Affirming Care.” They discuss the rise in youth presenting with gender-related distress and the dangers of gender affirming medical practices. They highlight the need for a more comprehensive approach and express concerns about the lack of critical thinking and scientific understanding when treating gender dysphoria. The need to protect the well-being of individuals, particularly children, and make informed decisions based on evidence is critical. What are the long-term effects and risks of transitioning? How has social media influenced young people? And has gender transition actually alleviated depression, anxiety, and mental illnesses in youth presenting with gender-related distress? So that inspired me to reach out to the detransitioner community and start learning everything I could,” said Winn.Winn is the host of the “You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist” podcast and associate producer of the new documentary “No Way Back: The Reality of Gender Affirming Care,” which premieres in select AMC Theaters for one day only on Wednesday, June 21st.

What do you do when you've spent tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars pursuing a career that falls victim to a sweeping ideology? If you're in the mental health profession, you've likely had to sit with this question in the past two years. What do you do? Do you walk away and relinquish your license? Do you dig your heels in and stand in the gap, risking the revoking of your license or worse yet - being cancelled? In today's episode, I talk with Stephanie Winn, LMFT, a licensed mental health professional in the state of Oregon. She breaks down how the industry became captured and how she began to notice the warning signs in her own practice.

“We're sterilizing a generation who will not be able to have their own kids. And we're altering their sexual functioning in a way that's going to make it more difficult for them to have loving relationships.”Stephanie Winn is a licensed marriage and family therapist who is currently treating detransitioners and parents with gender-questioning youth. She says that gender-affirming care is costly to one's physical health and antithetical to the therapeutic process, reducing the role of the therapist from a curious explorer to someone who is not allowed to probe, question, or act with discernment.“We're essentially agreeing with the lie that these vulnerable, young people who are in a moment of great distress, really truly have no other ways of coping than to make life-altering decisions with a lot of negative ramifications for their health. And that's not true,” says Winn. “Puberty blockers are not FDA-approved for the treatment of a mental health condition. They're being prescribed off label for very young children. And we know for a fact that puberty blockers damage, among other things, brain development, also bone development.”Winn and I discuss “Affirmation Generation,” a new documentary she is featured in, which critically explores the gender-affirming model, society's suppression of detransitioners, the for-profit trans-industry and the many myths associated with being transgender.“So many of the vulnerable, young people who are presenting with gender dysphoria are autistic. Many of them have trauma histories. They've been bullied. They've been abandoned,” says Winn. In today's modern world, we are constantly fed mental shortcuts that can influence our thoughts and ideas. We aren't required to do a lot of deep thinking into what we're consuming, because all too often, an algorithm does that for us. Where does the responsibility lie? How reliant are we on mental shortcuts and the absence of deep thought? Are we satisfied with only being shown part of the whole picture? Are we getting full on what Xavier describes as the “junk food mental diet”? In this thought-provoking conversation, we investigate how topics such as social incentives, groupthink, and heuristics, can all have an impact on our mental health, behavior and relationships. We shift our conversation to explore different strategies and questions we can ask ourselves to counteract our natural cognitive biases.Xavier Bonilla holds a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) and has been a licensed clinician doing mental health work for 15 years. He has worked in various inpatient and outpatient settings and has numerous experiences working with individuals that have serious mental illness. He is a former seminarian and is also a podcaster. When you entrust a therapist with your personal struggles, you expect her to see you as a unique individual, and greet you with non-judgmental curiosity. The last thing anyone wants in their counseling relationship is to be treated prejudicially, stereotyped on the basis of their immutable characteristics, or made to feel guilty for the color of their skin. And yet, to students like Leslie, it's becoming increasingly apparent that that is exactly what is being taught in graduate programs.Therapy is a place you hope to be able to work through shame; learn to see your foibles with compassion; and internalize your locus of control, while releasing any undue sense of responsibility for issues you may have been scapegoated for. It is also ideally a process that helps cultivate peace, understanding, and perspective when dealing with people you find challenging. And in therapy, we expect to learn to recognize and correct for distorted ways of thinking that amplify our stress. Unfortunately, according to Leslie and whistleblowers like her, many modern counseling programs do just the opposite.Listen as Antioch University whistleblower, coach, and founder of the Radical Center Leslie Elliott describes the disturbing series of events that unfolded over the past two years. We explore ethical dilemmas and differences of opinion in how people in our field are conceptualizing complex matters such as “social justice,” victimhood, “allyship,” gender, the role of the therapist, politics and activism, racism and “anti-racism,” cultural competence, stereotyping, neutrality, individuality, and responsibility.Leslie Elliott is a holistic wellness coach in Washington State who works with clients from a person-centered, existential perspective, taking into account the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. She earned a BA in Psychology in 2008 and went straight to law school in 2009. During her second year of law school, she decided a legal career was not for her and went back to the drawing board.Leslie spent the next several years raising her 4 children and working part-time in the field of natural medicine before returning to higher education, enrolling in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Master's program at Antioch University in 2019. There she had the opportunity to learn and improve counseling skills and therapeutic approaches, but also encountered something deeply disturbing: the usurpation of traditional therapy values by Critical Social Justice ideology. Near the end of her Master's coursework, she took a leave of absence after her courses began requiring students to sign a Social Justice “civility pledge.” Frustrated in her attempts to communicate her concerns to the university, she decided to go public in October of 2022 and expose how ideology is corrupting the fields of mental health and higher education.Undeterred from her work, Leslie began her coaching practice in late 2021, working in a non-clinical setting that allows her to use her counseling skills and her passion for natural health to support her clients. She works with individuals and families, and areas of interest include but are not limited to: life-span, aging, and fertility issues; parent coaching; spiritual growth and integration; technology and pornography addiction recovery; infidelity trauma and recovery; gender confusion and detransition; ADHD; institutional abuse & “DEI” discrimination; medical abuse trauma; and more.Leslie's consulting practice, The Radical CenterLeslie's blog, The Radical Center on SubstackLeslie's YouTube channel, The Radical Center on YouTubeLeslie's GiveSendGo legal fundIn this episode, I mentioned Jonathan Haidt's work; in particular, his book “The Righteous Mind.” You can find that in my bookshop, or purchase it directly from this Amazon Affiliate link.If you enjoyed this conversation, please rate & review it on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. At times it seems that the institution of marriage is crumbling. Yet a happy, trusting, long-term intimate relationship is one of life's greatest joys, and the ideal environment for raising well-adjusted children. People who are happily married live longer, healthier, and more financially successful lives. Fortunately, it is possible to develop the tools to build lasting and fulfilling relationships. Dovid Feldman, LPC has dedicated his career to teaching these tools so that marriages can start strong — and stay that way.In this conversation, we discuss the essential values and virtues that form the building blocks of lasting love, as well as tools for rekindling intimacy when it has been dampened. Dovid brings his traditional Jewish values, while I bring my evolutionary psychology lens. Together we explore what men and women need from their significant others; how to protect relationships from resentment and mindsets that keep love thriving amidst the pressures of children and career.Dovid Feldman is a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Building Great Marriages, a private practice dedicated to helping couples recreate lost intimacy. After working with hundreds of couples, Dovid decided to share his marriage wisdom, inspiration and guidance on Twitter, and has built a large following since 2017. “Why don't you just detransition?” Corinna Cohn is tired of fielding this question, but gracious enough to address it with me on today's episode. Corinna has lived as a transsexual woman for his entire adult life, and is over it. But the effects of cross-sex hormones and body modification surgeries cannot be reversed. In another frank and, at times, graphic discussion on the state of gender and sexuality in clown world, today we explore questions such as: is “detransitioner” the right word? How about victims of gender medicine, or survivors of gender malpractice? Given the facts that humans cannot actually change sex, and these medical procedures are experimental and often go horribly wrong, can postoperative transsexuals actually engage in pleasurable and painless sex? How on earth is this stuff getting sold to people when it causes so much damage? What do people expect from “transition?” Is there such a thing as “true trans?” What does Corinna think of the idea that “adults should be able to do whatever they want?” Does the existence of an underground market for niche body modification mean that doctors have an obligation to take a “harm reduction” approach and provide such “services” above-ground, and if so, should taxpayer dollars cover it? Finally, we address how Corinna manages to find joy, pleasure, and fulfillment, and review some listener Q&A's from Twitter.Corinna Cohn writes about life having undergone the process of gender transition as a teenager in the 1990s and co-hosts Heterodorx podcast. Corinna's writing has appeared in Quillette and the Washington Post. Corinna Cohn and Nina Paley co-hosted Stephanie's guest appearance on Heterodorx in Episode 75, Stephanie Winn is Some Kind of Therapist. In this episode Stephanie mentioned Steven Pressfield's book, The War of Art. She shares some tales of her grad school training, including a cultish “T-group” retreat, before moving on to trauma resilience, appropriate boundaries, and the savior complex of some clinicians. Between being oppressed by a TERFy co-host, exhausted by trans-everything, and contracting the plague, it's no wonder Corinna needs advice. Can Winn deliver? Listen and find out!
