We got movie reviews number #53 today. Let's do a little roll call, hmm.1.(The go between 1971) Julie Christie and Alan Bates star in this British film, shocker. There's a whole darn movie full of plot but it really kind of is about just what the title sez, Boring! 2.(The Final Comedown 1972) Long time hard ta get Lando film is here and it delivers the goods. Studio and distribution versus revolutionaries fighting fascist racist u.s. imperialism. There are issues here of course, and Lando and his Mom are all caught up in it. It gets the white radicals right, ha.3.(The Day of the Jackal 1973) Omg it's been a long time from seeing this film til today. It's highly rated on IMDB but I remember nothing except that an assassin guy has a hard time.4.(Black Belt Jones 1974) Hong Kong Fooey, the kid that calls Charlton Heston “Hostile” in Omega Man and the Guy who beats up racist cops and then drives to the airport in their squad car star in this film about a community out to save a rad Karate school, flawless victory.5.(Shelia Levine is dead and living in New York 1975) Just Wow, more exposure for this movie definitely. Nazi hunter Jeannie Berlin from Hunters brings Gail Parents book to life. Find and watch this movie, then listen to us gab about it in yer headphones hmmm?6.(Hot Potato 1976) Here is the extremely loose sequel to black belt Jones. It kinda reminded me of when the Beatles were talking about the movie help, which was filmed on location so they could chill and smoke weed in the Bahamas. It feels like the studio gave the people some dough and tickets to film in Thailand and they partied and forgot to write a script etc until the deadline.7.(Roseland 1977) So many, if not most films that came out in 1977 after May 25 were overshadowed by Star Wars and left behind. I had never seen this Christopher Walken gem before, it's quite a cinematic treat. Directed by James Ivory. That's the news fam, thanks as always for listening.

An update from another of New Zealand's talented musicians – Harper Finn. Finn is finally releasing his debut album, ‘Silo Park' coming out at the end of next month. The album is a journey through change, isolation, and discovery, set against the dual backdrops of his homes in New Zealand and New York, recorded in the Woodstock region upstate. I think that I might have met my match. For the last few years I've been feeling as though I'm the person who talks the most about lost queer spaces, but journalist David Kennerley might actually be ahead of me. He loves queer nightlife so much that he's gone and written a whole book about the long-lost gay scene of '90s New York City. The book, Getting In: NYC Club Flyers from the Gay 1990s, includes flyers that he collected throughout the '90s from legendary spaces like the Palladium, Limelight, Splash, and Tunnel. But out of all of these lost spaces it was The Roxy that had his heart. We caught up to talk about his book, his early days in NYC, and his journey with his queerness. It was in the Fall of 2016 that I first received an email from Haley Murphy, then the Campus Sexual Assault Liaison of the Crime Victim Assistance Center, Inc., located in Binghamton, NY.  Haley was writing to let me know that I had been recommended to her to provide training on the neuroscience of trauma in sexual assault and interpersonal violence assault, as well as principles on trauma-informed interviewing and investigations, to a multi-disciplinary audience that CVAC, Inc., and the New York State Police were co-sponsoring. That was the beginning of what continues to be an extremely productive business relationship and friendship between Haley and me; I was hired to do the presentation which occurred in July of 2017, and it was there that I had the privilege of meeting the four panelists that presented after my training (see the previous four episodes' notes for those details). In 2020, when I made early attempts at getting the ball rolling for launching this podcast, I asked Haley if she would be a guest on my show, and she willingly agreed. It was a pleasure to get to know Haley better during that interview, and moreover, to hear how passionate she was about providing trauma-informed interviewing training to the nearly 200 law enforcement, victim advocates, mental health providers, social workers and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners that had attended the training that the CVAC and NYSP had provided. I was impressed with her enthusiasm and zealous attitude…you will be, too; it comes across in the interview. Even though this interview occurred over 2 years ago, it is still as pertinent, valid, and important today as it was then; you'll understand what I mean when you hear this interview—Haley and I discussed her background, education, and work history. But we also had a very interesting and educational discussion about common sexual trauma responses, victim impact, and her work to provide healing and recovery to her clients, at the same time she is growing in her own survival story. This is an episode you're going to not want to miss! In preparing to post this episode, I called Haley today to let her know that I was going to post it…she was very excited at the news.
