Poète et dramaturge, comédien et homme de radio, Michel Garneau est un homme aux mots vivants. Amoureux et défenseur de la langue québécoise, de son rythme et de sa musique propre, il revient avec joie sur sa vie de poète et sur son métier de «tradapteur», sur son ami Leonard Cohen, sur le contenu de sa bibliothèque et JJ Cale qu'il écoute par ce jour brumeux. Entre deux grands rires qui font aimer la vie, il nous offre à déguster une sélection de ses «meilleurs grands frères», ces poètes anciens qui n'ont pas pris une ride grâce à sa tradaptation et sa voix chaude. Lorsqu'Urbain le rejoint au téléphone, il est loin de se douter qu'il s'agit en fait du dernier printemps de Michel Garneau. Cosí la Milano d'agosto si fa sempre piú simile a quell'innominabile cittadina messicana nel giorno dei morti, e il Console rivive in un vortice di tristezza, alcol, nostalgia. Un romanzo in cui si intreccia amore per la letteratura, passione per l'arte della traduzione e dolore per la fine di una relazione. "L'ombra del vulcano" di Marco Rossari (Einaudi) racconta le vicende di un uomo a pezzi dopo la fine di una storia d'amore. Il protagonista è un traduttore che sta lavorando alla traduzione di "Sotto il vulcano" dello scrittore inglese Malcolm Lowry, considerato "uno dei capolavori illegibili del Novecento" che narra l'ultimo giorno di vita di un ex console britannico in Messico dedito all'alcol. Inizia così un gioco di specchi fra la vita del protagonista del romanzo di Marco Rossari e quella del console del romanzo di Lowry. In una Milano deserta in agosto, le riflessioni del protagonista sulla vita e sulla letteratura. Nella seconda parte parliamo di "Il passaporto verde" di Zineb Mekouar (Nord - traduz. Giuseppe Maugeri), opera prima della scrittrice franco marocchina che dal 2009 vive a Parigi e che è stata fra i finalisti del prestigioso premio letterario Goncourt per l'opera prima nel 2022. Nel romanzo si raccontano le differenze culturali fra il Marocco e la Francia, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i diritti delle donne. Protagoniste sono due giovani donne: Kenza, che appartiene a una famiglia aristocratica e benestante e frequenta la scuola francese, e Fatiha che è la figlia della domestica. Da piccole si considerano sorelle, ma crescendo le differenze di classe vengono a galla e le due prendono strade diverse con Kenza che va a Parigi. Quando Kenza torna a Casablanca deve fare i conti con questa appartenenza alle due culture, ma anche con il suo passato.

El autor James Denham nació en Londres y fue educado en Cambridge. Fue uno de los talentos malogrados por la II Guerra mundial. Perteneció a una familia acomodada. Su carrera diplomática le llevó a India y a Birmania. Su obra es breve y escasa. Se compone de cinco títulos, hoy imposibles de encontrar. La literatura para Denham era un mero entretenimiento. Fue amigo de Malcolm Lowry, con quien coincidió en la universidad y del famoso coleccionista de arte Edward James. La canción de Lord Rendall procede de su último libro, titulado How to Kill (1943). Fue el único que intentó publicar en una edición comercial, y lo rechazaron todos los editores porque pensaban que podía deprimir a los soldados combatientes y a la población, en plena guerra. También por la inusual carga erótica de algunos de sus relatos. Denham murió a los treinta y dos años, caído en combate en el norte de África. Aunque el presente relato (una mise en abîme de vértigo) se explica perfectamente por sí solo, puede ser útil saber que la canción popular inglesa Lord Rendall es el diálogo entre el joven Lord Rendall y su madre después de que aquél haya sido envenenado por su novia. Booze as muse or a sure road to ruin? In this month's episode, William Palmer – author of In Love with Hell: Drink in the Lives and Work of Eleven Writers – and Henry Jeffreys – author of Empire of Booze and The Cocktail Dictionary – join the Slightly Foxed team to mull over why alcohol is such an enduring feature in literature.  From the omnipresence of cocktails in John Cheever's short stories and ritual aperitifs in Patricia Highsmith's Ripley novels to Mr Picksniff falling into Mrs Todger's fireplace in Martin Chuzzlewit and P. G. Wodehouse's hangover remedies for booze-soaked Bertie Wooster, drinks are social signifiers in fiction. Charles Dickens was fond of sherry cobblers and Jean Rhys knocked back Pernod in Paris, while Malcolm Lowry was a dipsomaniac and Flann O'Brien dreamed up alcoholic ink for the Irish Times, rendering readers drunk from fumes. We ask why gin denotes despair and port is always jovial, and question whether hitting the bottle helps or hinders the creative process in writers. Following a convivial sherry, we're whisked away on a wet-your-whistle-stop tour of drinking dens with our friends at London Literary Tours, barrelling from bars propped up by Oscar Wilde to the follies of Dylan Thomas at Soho's French House via Ian Fleming's Vesper cocktail at Dukes. After Under the Volcano was published, Lowry became an even more spectacular drunk than he was while writing the book, and his life sort of spiraled out of control. Since the publication of Malcolm Lowry's novel Under The Volcano in 1947, Hollywood had tried in vain to adapt it for the big screen.  Artists as varied as Joseph Losey, Luis Bunuel and Ken Russell attempted to corral the novel's stream of consciousness structure and penchant for flashbacks and monologues into an accessible narrative thread.  When the property landed on John Huston's desk, his career and health were both on a downward slide.  The 78 year old director suffered from emphysema and lung disease and was coming off a string of well made but impersonal films like Victory, Phobia and Annie.  Under the Volcano, with great performances from Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset, turned his creative fortunes around.  Nominated for several big awards and critically lauded, the film began a winning streak for Huston that would end with his swan song, 1987's The Dead.   Dan and Vicky discuss the film and their love for Finney and Bisset.  In the recently seen segment, they talk about new films It Comes At Night, Deepwater Horizon and Passengers and older gems like The Witches of Eastwick, Phantasm and Adam Green's Frozen.   Dan also tells us about his upcoming play at the Guthrie in Minneapolis and his recent awe-inspiring trip to Google headquarters in NY.  Our hosts bring up their love for old Siskel and Ebert episodes, their hate of drunk neighbors and their disdain for serial killer Richard Ramirez.   Join us for Hot Date 55: Under the Volcano.  You'll lava it!  Leave us some feedback.

Esta semana recebemos Marcelo Teixeira. Transmontano, nascido em 1964, é licenciado em História pela Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa, onde também estudou Arqueologia. Em tempos, apresentou um programa de rádio dedicado à divulgação de poesia ("As Margens do Silêncio"), mas é sobretudo conhecido como editor. Durante cerca de uma década, trabalhou na Oficina do Livro, tendo criado a chancela Ovelha Negra, que deu a conhecer muitos escritores latino-americanos, alguns ainda inéditos em Portugal. Mais recentemente, criou e dirige a editora Parsifal. Foi co-autor de vários livros de poesia e de uma pequena novela, A Caminho do Vulcão, em que imagina o encontro, na capital portuguesa, de Malcolm Lowry com Fernando Pessoa. The Mexican Revolution (1910–20) gave birth to a radical regime which, during the 1920s and 1930s, innovated in terms of state-building, social reform, and cultural policy, thus becoming a magnet for foreign journalists and intellectual tourists. But while American cultural commentators (John Reed, Frank Tannenbaum, Carleton Beals and others) were often sympathetic, the British – D H Lawrence, Graham Greene, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, and Malcolm Lowry – were highly critical. This talk by Professor Emeritus Alan Knight (University of Oxford) focuses on the British, asking why they were so negative, what they objected to, and what they tell us about the Mexican revolutionary project – or about themselves, and the interwar British society to which they belonged.
