What launches us into life strong and secure? Knowing the Father heart of God – His protection, healing, peace, provision, and presence. Christian counselor, speaker, and author, Michelle Nietert, coauthor with Lynn Cowell of Strong and Secure: 100 Devotions for Young Women says, “We believe that God desires a deep and intimate relationship with each of us”. Leaving what is familiar to step into the unknown can be exciting and scary at the same time. In order to fully swing into the new, we need to let go of what was. As we do we can fix our eyes and God trusting that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Is there a remedy for the growing stress and anxiety that young women are experiencing? Authors Lynn Cowell and Michelle Nietert believe the answer is not in a greater understanding of self, but a greater knowledge of God. Lynn Cowell speaks with Seth and Deb about Strong and Secure, highlighting our Heavenly Father as Protector, Healer, Peace, Provider, and Presence. Difficult days can go from bad to worse when we forget emotions are intended to be our friends instead of our enemies. When we live as if emotions are our enemies, we try to control them or pretend they don't exist. When we engage with emotions as our friends, we notice and listen to them. Valuing our emotions for the information they give us, we discover our core values and deep desires. We learn to pause and consider how to move forward in the direction of our goals instead of staying stuck in our self-protection patterns. In this episode, Doug and Janet enjoy an energetic conversation with author, speaker, podcaster, and Licensed Professional Counselor Michelle Nietert. We're starting a conversation about Managing Your Emojis - 100 Devotions For Navigating Your Feelings, a new book Michelle co-authored with Lynn Cowell. Listen now to benefit from Michelle's generous wisdom and sense of humor and linger in these TAKEAWAYS - Managing our emotions is challenging. But the emotions we feel are energy in motion, and we can meet the challenge with the help of God and others. When emotions remind us to connect with secure relationships, emotions are an onramp to maturity instead of chaos. What we think often affects what we feel, and how we feel often affects what we do. Our mind, heart, and body are all connected. We can discover ways to train our brains so they can help us manage our emotions - just like we can train our brains to learn math facts. Training our brains to focus on God's promises can help us, over time, learn to replace feelings of sadness, fear, and anger with hopefulness, bravery, and calmness. Regardless of the career path you chose, the level of education you have, who you married or didn't marry, or what you've accomplished in life, you hold priceless value in God's eyes. The timeless verse from John 3:16 brings us comfort that God gave His Son for us—and that no matter what, He died for our sins, and because of that sacrifice, we will have eternal life. This week's guests remind us that God's unconditional love applies in all circumstances. Professional counselor Michelle Nietert and Proverbs 31 Ministries' Lynn Cowell have written a new book called Managing Your Emojis where they encourage young people to explore their God-given emotions toward a healthier mental space. Donnie Griggs has experienced the unique challenges of being a pastor in a small town, and has felt the pull toward something he perceived as bigger or better. But the years in small-town ministry have changed his heart, and he's seen how it's possible to make a huge impact in small spaces. Because we can bring the presence of God, we can bring the hope of God in the form of the Holy Spirit to someone who's hurting.” - Michelle Nietert “David expressed feelings of anger, rage, depression, distress, fear, as well as joy and happiness and thankfulness. He expressed so many emotions, and God called David—this man expressing how he felt—a man after His own heart. So if David can be a man after God's heart and express his emotions freely to the Lord, so can I. “ - Lynn Cowell “There's such a spectrum of emotions, and we want children to learn that they can turn to God to share their emotions with Him—and teaching children that God made these emotions and He can help them to process these feelings, even the most uncomfortable ones.” - Lynn Cowell “I think one of the healthy coping skills we have to teach our kids before they ever encounter trouble is how to hold on to hope, how to become resilient, and how to persevere through difficult times.” - Michelle Nietert “There is nothing you are going to face that you and God can't handle together.” - Michelle Nietert “I think settling that this is where God's put me for the foreseeable future has really helped me stop looking for greener grass somewhere else and helped me stop complaining about where I was, either internally or out loud. It just helped me to resolve, to be content that this is where God wants me.“ - Donnie Griggs “What we model is that the community we have is because of what Jesus has done for us. And when you look around the room on a Sunday morning, it should feel like nothing about this makes sense except for Jesus and the way that we care for each other.” - Donnie Griggs ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Creating new habits is hard. Oftentimes, we don't even notice when we're stuck in how we've always done it, and don't realize how this can sometimes hold us back from something bigger. But when we're willing to take a chance by seeking God's heart in the day to day, He can help us break out of old habits that haven't been serving us, into a new way of living. Tara-Leigh Cobble is the host of The Bible Recap Podcast. She shares with us how reading the Bible was a routine habit, until she started to approach it with the mindset of looking for God—and when she did, it became transformative. Dr. Jackie Greene is the co-pastor of Forward City Church with her husband, recording artist Travis Greene. In the early years of her marriage, Jackie struggled with her identity and often compared herself to others, but once she tried to stop negotiating with God about the things she didn't like, she started to live in the power of her individuality. And so it's not just for you to power through these things. It's for you to find the healing that He has available to you.” - Tara-Leigh Cobble “To feel so loved and seen by my pastor, to feel so cared for—I know that was the kindness of the Lord to just reach into that space and say, ‘I see you and I want you to talk to me about your heart.'” - Tara-Leigh Cobble “What I have found is generally, people on Earth show up late to the thing that God already knows about us. And so for me, it took a lot of having to push out there to find my own voice and find the affirmation of the Lord to be the thing that I was looking for, rather than waiting for people to affirm a thing that maybe oftentimes I wasn't even showing yet.” - Dr. Jackie Greene “I recognized that what I had been looking for outwardly, I could find inwardly in my relationship with the Lord. It started to help me progress beyond looking for that, beyond the voices of people having to say it, and allowing God to say it for myself.” - Dr. Jackie Greene “I think we leave a lot on the table, not recognizing that we already have—on the inside of us—so many hidden treasures. All we have to do is be bold enough or even brave enough to dig for them.” - Dr. Jackie Greene “I was allowing culture to be my mirror rather than God to be my mirror. And as I began to actually look at Him and see that I wasn't reflecting power or freedom or fearlessness, I came to recognize that, Oh, this really isn't who I am. And so I came to know myself the more I came to know the Lord.” - Dr. Jackie Greene ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! When was a time in your life when God seemed to have vanished? The end of one year and the start of another can leave us wondering where God even is and what will happen next. Some of us make resolutions, hoping for certainty and something to fall back on when everything is spinning out of control. My goal next year is to join forces with Queen Esther in seeing our invisible God amid uncertainty. In this episode, I will talk with Amy Carroll and Lynn Cowell about their new Bible study, Esther: Seeing Our Invisible God in an Uncertain World.Amy and Lynn walk us through a three-step Bible study method for seeking answers in uncertain times.Like Esther, we too can:Listen to wise people who fill our gaps in understandingSpeak up with confidence, knowing that God has a place for your voice in His storyEmbracing your feelings as a God-given catalyst for connection with HimIn the Bible, Esther is a book many people don't explore deeply. What do you do when God seems to have vanished? Maybe you feel alone in your decision making, your parenting, in your life? This is the question on the back of the book that we are going to highlight today. It is called *Esther: Seeing Our Invisible God in an Uncertain World. I don't know if you know this, but Esther is one of the two books of the Bible where God's name is not mentioned once. We are going to dive deeper into this today in our study. But I think it is amazing, because God's fingerprints are all over the book of Esther, but His name is not mentioned. Maybe that is where you feel like you are in your life. You are like where are you God, I don't see you or feel you. Are you even working? So I love that we can study the life of Esther, and we can see that God still is present. He is still working! I am so excited to have Lynn Cowell and Amy Carroll on the podcast to talk about their Bible Study. It is phenomenal, and we are going to dive deeper into their 6-week study with these words: Listen, Feel, Do, Speak. Also, both Lynn and Amy are writers for Proverbs 31 Ministries, and I am so excited to share about this amazing ministry for Giving Tuesday. I cannot wait to tell you more about that at the end of the episode. Again, you are going to learn so much from Amy and Lynn. But the stories of the Bible communicate rich theological truths, and they do so in a way that is less abstract and so easier for us to remember and refer back to.

When we're going through uncertain times, just keeping ourselves afloat can feel like a challenge. It's counterintuitive to believe that uncertainty can be a pathway to our greatest influence. Yet, that's exactly what we see in the book of Esther. With co-authors of the Esther study, Amy Carroll and Lynn Cowell, Cheri discusses four biblical steps that can lead us to influence in our most difficult days.
Let's be honest: It's difficult to love, know, and serve an invisible God. It's especially hard in uncertain times when He's nowhere in sight ... when He seems to have vanished. In today's episode, Cheri is the sole interviewer, digging for solutions to this dilemma with Amy Carroll and Lynn Cowell, co-authors of the new study, Esther: Seeing Our Invisible God in an Uncertain World. We're not the only women who have faced this challenge, so listen in for some ancient and reliable truths!

If you said this prayer- you are justified immediately and made right with God.Living a life to glorify God is a life- long journey! But know that right now you are saved and set free from the bondage of sin (including past, present and future sin). Nothing can separate you from the love of God and living in eternity with Him. We’re jumping back into our series on parenting and family culture today while continuing to talk about mental health. If you missed you the last episode, you definitely want to go back and hear my conversation with Carla Arges on Living Victoriously with Mental Illness. Today I’m joined by mental health professional, Michelle Nietert, and she and I are talking about making sure we’re healthy ourselves and then evaluating our kids’ mental health. Michelle and I talk about how important it is to check in with yourself. She tells us to check on our spiritual practice, to check on our emotions, our sleep, our nutrition and our movement. Michelle gives ideas for how we can be sure we’re centering ourselves on God so we are in a good mindset. She says, “emotions need to be on the bus, but they don’t need to be driving the bus…we want to make sure God is driving our bus.” Next, it’s time to check in with our kids, have conversations and evaluate their mental health. Michelle says we want to make sure our kids are hopeful about the future, that they’re managing their nutrition and sleep well, and that they are able to process negative emotions when they experience them. She shares questions we can ask our kids to gauge how they’re doing in these areas. Michelle says if they’re not doing well or if we’re just not sure, it’s time to ask for help from a professional. She also encourages us to celebrate when things are good! Michelle Nietert, LPC-S is an author, speaker, and Clinical Director of Community Counseling Associates in Dallas, TX. She’s a sought-after leader by mental health professionals, churches, and school districts, co-author of Loved & Cherished, a devotional for tween girls and is also co-host of the Raising Brave Beauties podcast, which will be re-launching in May as Raising Mentally Healthy Kids. Where do you seek love and approval? Is it based on what someone says (or doesn't say) to you? Your latest big win in your job, getting invited to that event, or if your kids are behaving well today? When being loved or approved rises and falls based on others, it's easy to forget our true source of love and approval already comes from Jesus. Today our friend and author, Lynn Cowell, reminds us that Jesus pours His love out on us, and shares how we can live with love and approval from Christ, not for love and approval from others. Grab a pen and paper, you will want to take notes on this one! P.S.: If you've got a young woman in your life who needs encouragement, we recommend listening to this episode with her! Lynn Cowell joins me to discuss the importance of being available, approachable, and partnering with the Holy Spirit to develop our children's gifts, particularly our daughters. Questions Lynn and I Discussed: (5:16) Share how you came to know Jesus (6:33) Take us back to when your daughters were young. What were their personalities like? (9:33) What were some of the intentional steps you took to develop a strong relationship with them at a young age? (12:10) How did you experience the benefits of that as they became teens and now adults? (19:09) One of the biggest fears I face is the fear of not having a close relationship with my kids as they get older and become adults. How would you encourage someone like me, who has an 8 year old daughter, to develop that strong mother/daughter relationship in the early years? (23:58) In our world today there are so many conflicting messages for young girls and women about what makes you a strong woman. When you began facing that reality as a mom, how did you teach your daughters about being kind and gentle, yet bold and courageous? (31:40) What do you hope a girl walks away with upon completion of your Loved and Cherished devotional? SHOW NOTES cont. Michelle has served as a professional counselor and director of Community Counseling Associates in Texas for over a decade. She has been a professional counselor for more than 20 years. Let us just tell you, she is a wealth of knowledge. Obviously, 2020 brings mental health issues to a whole new level. 1 in 4 adolescents will experience mental illness before age 18. 1 in 3 adults suffer in some way with mental illness. The more we talk about this and bring it to the table the better. Michelle’s biblical approach to her counseling practice is solid and full of TRUTH, as well as innovative, creative and empathetic. We also discuss Michelle’s new devotional book, LOVED AND CHERISHED, co-authored with Lynn Cowell, Proverbs 31 Ministries author. Geared toward girls 7-14, this book gives girls 100 devotionals to meditate on daily. LOVED AND CHERISHED lays the groundwork for girls to know the love God has for them before entering the often tumultuous junior high years where kids often feel rejected and struggle with feelings of not being good enough that can lead to anxiety and depression.

The one on the forefront of most parents' minds right now is the looming 2020-2021 school year. No matter what you choose for your children and their schooling this year, or if you've not been given a choice; we've all been thrown for a loop. No matter where you live, this new school year will look very different from years past. How do we as parent prepare ourselves and our kids for all the changes to come? What are the right decisions to make for our kids? How do we finish summer strong while we have so much anxiety for the fall? To help us answer all these questions and more, we've invited Michelle Nietert to join us. As a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, Michelle has been providing therapeutic interventions to children and their families in counseling offices for over 20 years. As a previous educator, public school crisis counselor, and youth and children’s minister, she interacts regularly with parents and students at public school assemblies, PTA meetings, local churches, and is the mental health consultant for a local private Christian school. Michelle also provides trainings for school counselors, teachers and homeschool parents. A recognized expert in Solution Focused Therapy, she is the clinical director and owner of a large counseling center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Michelle’s writing can be found on the MOPS blog, in Lifeway’s Parenting Magazine and she is the Mental Health columnist for Just Between Us Magazine. She also joins her audiences in the parenting trenches as a happily married mom of two school-aged children. To discover her Counselor Thoughts blog and podcast providing Solutions for Life, please visit MichelleNietert.com. She is also the co-author of the book Loved and Cherished, a devotional bool for girls ages 8-12, which releases on 9/8. Michelle also co-hosts the Raising Brave Beauties podcast with Lynn Cowell, co-author of Loved and Cherished.
Author and Proverbs 31 speaker Lynn Cowell hits it out of the park with her challenge to parents of all ages to parent intentionally! Lynn says, “Confidence is the spring-board for our child.” She talks about the comparison conversations our kids can easily have with themselves early on in childhood that can damage the way they look at themselves for a lifetime. You are going to appreciate how vulnerable and open Lynn is as she discusses mistakes she and her husband made early on as parents. And, for moms and dads of daughters, at the end of our conversation Lynn and I tell you how you can get a free devotional for your daughter. So you’ll want to keep listening to the very end!
Do you ever find it hard to let God work on your behalf? Are you tempted to trust in your own strength rather than let God work things out for you? Did you know that a girl’s confidence peaks at the age of nine? Statistics report that 7 out of every 10 girls don’t feel like they measure up. Moms, how can we raise our daughters with the confidence to pursue courageous and fearless lives? Today's Better Together podcast guest, author and Proverbs 31 Ministry speaker, Lynn Cowell, tells us about her journey to discover what it means to be brave and courageous in her life. As women of all ages fight to find that same confidence, Lynn wants to equip our young tweens so that they can find confidence sooner in life. She is the author of the new book, Brave Beauty: Finding the Fearless, a companion guide written for girls between the ages of 8-12 years old. I loved so many things about our conversation! One of the most powerful observations was when Lynn explained how culture drives our girls to build their confidence on three shaky foundations: 1. Someone (like a relationship with someone); 2. Some Place (career/status); or 3. Something (beauty, education). But, all of those things can be lost or taken because much of life is out of our control. So, to help our daughters, let's journey along with them to help them to build unshakeable confidence on an unshakeable God because they can’t lose God! What if your confidence has been shaken? Lynn has something for you, too! Lynn has a new Bible study for women titled Make Your Move: Finding Unshakeable Confidence Despite Your Fears and Failures. There are a lot of strong, confident women in the Bible! Lynn has created a Bible study so that you can learn from these women, some of them you might not know, but they will inspire to reach for God's best! Mom, if you have a daughter in elementary school or junior high, would you do me a favor and check out Lynn's website. Our world is coming hard after young girls, but we can equip them to stand strong and confident in Jesus' name. RESOURCES Lynn’s website – including free resources! When you were a girl, would you have described yourself as brave? What about beautiful? If you’re like me, the answer would have been a big, fat NO! If you have a daughter between the ages of 8-12 I’m going to BEG you (unashamedly) to buy this book for her. PLEASE. I had the privilege of reading it before it released and as I read through the pages I found myself reading every word with excitement and anticipation, even desiring to take the chapter quizzes and participate in the journaling. If someone had given this book to me when I was a tween, many of my life mistakes might have been avoided. Girls’ lives will be divinely changed because of this book. It’s called Brave Beauty and it’s the most important book (besides the Bible of course) that your daughter will read this year. Or next. Or ever. The author, Lynn Cowell, is my guest on this month’s podcast so listen in on our conversation and then get a copy for every tween in your life. Charlotte View 2011 interviews speaker and author with Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lynn Cowell, as she teaches moms how to be wise women raising wiser daughters. She is the author of the book, His Revolutionary Love, as well as a columnist for Focus on the Family's Thriving Family, Susie Mag, and Enrichment Journal. What is the reason behind bullying? According to her research, teen girls have the misguided believe that bullying will cause them to climb the social ladder. But the fact is that in the eyes of their peers, the opposite occur. Every young person desires to be wanted. But, this yearning for attention, affirmation, and approval, can lead our youth down paths that are destructive. This escalating trend will only reverse as teens see that their thinking is misguided; aggression is not the answer. What teens need to know is that the best way to feel important is to tap into a stable source for her very real needs for approval. According to Pew Research, 73% of 12- to 17-year-olds have at least one social networking profile. This means the pressure is on: "I am pretty enough? Popular enough? Posting enough?" Many girls invest hours every week trying to create exciting status updates, editing pictures to remove all the flaws, and even exaggerating their social activities - just because they want to appear more important than they feel. Every girl desires to be wanted. But, this yearning for attention, affirmation, and approval, can lead young women to hold nothing back. On social media, the new trend is that exposing everything seems to be the answer. Yet, what teenage girls need to know is that the best way to feel important is to keep parts of her heart a secret.
