Jenny Wheeler: Kate, you are a New York Times bestselling author with a string of historical hits to your credit, including The Alice Network and The Rose Code, but the one we are focusing on today is your latest book, The Diamond Eye. It is about a remarkable woman, the Second World War's most lethal female sniper, and in fact the most lethal female sniper of all time that we know of. This was another story that has been buried, even though she has a pretty remarkable claim to fame. Very few people had heard of Mila, so how did you come across the story? Kate Quinn: It's the classic case of when you are researching one book, your research drops the idea for a new book in your lap unasked for, which is a wonderful thing. This came about when I was researching one of my last books just before The Rose Code called The Huntre...

Another round of batshit crazy Russian ass kicker for you to day, dear listeners. And we're joined by friend of the show, despite his guinea heritage, and comedian, Andrew Pupa. Lyudmila Pavlichenko was really, really good at killing Nazis. I don't know if it's something in the water over there, but it seems like every Russian is born with that talent. The Nazis even gave her a nickname, sure it was the most low effort "fuck you" nickname the Krauts could think of, but it's something. Enjoy!

During World War II, most women were doing their duty on the home front by working in factories and looking after the future generations of their respective nations. But for one 24-year old Ukrainian woman named Lyudmila Pavlichenko, she wasn’t about to let Nazi Germany take over her beloved USSR. With 309 confirmed kills, Lyudmila Pavlichenko became the most successful female sniper in all of history.
La pacifica ragazza che divenne la Signora Morte per colpa dei nazisti.

“It's just incredible that this little hand has killed Nazis, has scythed them down by the hundreds, without missing…” Charlie Chaplin “Miss Pavlichenko's well known to fame, Russia's your country, fighting is your game, Your smile shines as bright as any new morning sun, But more than three hundred Nazi dogs fell by your gun.” Woody Guthrie “Charging together, we would dash into battle and forget about everything else in the world.” Lyudmila Pavlichenko “Gentlemen, I am 25 years old and I have already managed to kill 309 of the fascist invaders. Do you not think, gentlemen, that you have now been hiding behind my back for rather too long?” Lyudmila Pavlichenko During WW II, women in the Soviet Union had many reasons to fear German soldiers. But in some cases it was the German soldiers’ turn to be the targets of Soviet ladies. Among the many women who would fight tooth and nail and send quite a few Axis soldiers to a premature death, one stood out among the rest. Germans would know her by name, and would grow to fear her. And they had good reasons to fear her since it was by killing 309 of them that she would become the most deadly female sniper in history. Legends about her would grow both among her own comrades and among the terrified Nazi soldiers who heard rumors about this vengeful female demon who seemed to have made it her personal mission to make them pay for any outrage committed by anyone wearing their same uniform had ever. Some told stories about how a witch in some village near Odessa had cast a spell deflecting enemy bullets away from her. Others swore that she was followed by the lord of the forest himself—a wood sprite with a huge tree-like body who protected her, made her invisible and gave her the supernatural ability to move through the forest without making a sound, to know what was happening a mile away, and to see in complete darkness as well as normal people see in daylight. She was Lyudmila Pavlichenko aka Lady Death. Among other things, in this episode: Operation Barbarossa, caught between vicious dictators, Stalin (even better than Nazis at killing his own people), Nazi guns in front of you and Soviet guns pointed at your back, a song by Woody Guthrie, Charlie Chaplin kissing her hand, Lyudmila disappoints Yoda, bringing Belgian chocolates as a gift for your girlfriend (after looting them from a corpse), love found & love lost, bloody revenge, hanging out with the American First Lady.
In this special edition of History Impossible, a trend is broken: this is not about a particular story in history. This is about a man. Or rather, a conversation with a man. The one, the only, Daniele Bolelli, host of popular podcasts History on Fire and The Drunken Taoist and known for semi-regular appearances on popular podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience and the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. Daniele has been in History Impossible's corner since day one and some wonderful collaborations have come out of it, including the episode we both crafted concerning Lyudmila Pavlichenko, better known as Lady Death back in July, not to mention some upcoming collaborations we'll both be filling you all in on in the coming months. So in this conversation, Daniele and I cover a wide range of topics, of course including history, but with dashes of politics, philosophy, and literature. There's even a "debate" about the merits of Blood Meridian! Fingers crossed that we don't manage to alienate significant portions of our audiences (with apologies to Jordan Peterson fanboys), but for the rest of you who stick around, enjoy the conversation! Also thanks to Punk Opera for their badass song, "The Road", used at the end of the episode.

While drinking the decadent From Russia With Love cocktail, Shelley tells us the disturbing story of Anatoly Moskvin who collected "dolls." Bekah gives us another bad-ass woman tale with the story of Lyudmila Pavlichenko, one of the top military snipers of all time. Drinking: From Russia With Love 1/2 oz. Dark Godiva Chocolate Liqueur 1/2 oz. Chambord Champagne In champagne flute, pour the Godiva and the Chambord. Top with chilled champagne.
There were plenty of jobs for women in WW2: nurse, ambulance driver, factory worker. But then there were the other jobs, the ones no one really talked about. Spy. Resistance fighter. Killer. These are the stories of five women—Nadezhda Popova, Vitka Kempner, Noor Inayat Khan, Nancy Wake, and Lyudmila Pavlichenko—who fought the Nazis. They terrorized them from the sky, blew up their trains, endured their torture, rode bikes through their territory, and shot them down with their rifles. In a world that threatened to be consumed by evil, they fought back. *** SUPPORT THE PODCAST! Become a Patreon supporter and get a cool postcard. Lyudmila Pavlichenko was training for a career as a history teacher when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. She suspended her studies to enlist as a sniper in the Red Army, where she discovered a remarkable talent for shooting enemy soldiers. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll trace the career of "Lady Death," the deadliest female sniper in history. We'll also learn where in the world futility.closet.podcast is and puzzle over Air Force One. Intro: Andy Warhol's Brillo Boxes creates a host of puzzles in the philosophy of art. German architect Herman Sörgel wanted to dam the Congo to create two African seas. By the time Lyudmila Pavlichenko joined the rest of her peers at the International Student Assembly at American University in Washington, DC, much of the country knew her name. As well as the Nazis who despised her for the deadly aim she took with her rifle. www.warstoriescast.com Become at War Stories supporter on Patreon
Lyudmila Pavlichenko may have shot hundreds of Nazis with bullets during World War II, but during this week, she shot our hearts with this movie. Незламна, also known as Битва за Севастополь tells sort of the story of that lady, and teaches us that killing Nazis is good and makes Eleanor Roosevelt give you presents. Whoops, accidentally uploaded the next episode of Game of Thrones...
“I set out to show that a girl could do just as well.” In this episode, Katie passionately tells the story of Lyudmila Pavlichenko.
