Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. His approach is characterized by close collaboration with artists, aiming to distill a sound and style uniquely theirs while encouraging them to explore new territories. Emphasizing the visceral impact of music and its ability to evoke emotion and movement, Greenspan rejects formulas in favor of capturing genuine artistic expression. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Working with Nick Launay Going backward on the studio ladder to make for more opportunities Having the right attitude to stand out when you're getting started Working from rough mixes Pushing the boundaries of an artist Leaning into what makes an artist special Creative approaches to using poorly recorded tracks Creating a 3D sound using effects Using distortion on vocals Panning effects How to use stereo wideners effectively Capturing the room and making your tracks sound big Making the most out of a small room Eliminating noise on your tracks To learn more about Adam "Atom" Greenspan, visit: https://www.atomgreenspan.com/ For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes? Do you hear that thunder? That's the sound of strength in four 100-watt stacks. (Actually, one is a 200-watt bass tube head.) IDLES' guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan finally have the firepower to match their fury. (Original members singer/lyricist Joe Talbot, drummer Jon Beavis, and bassist Adam Devonshire fill out the band. Kiernan took over for guitarist Andy Stewart after 2015 EP Meat was released.) For much of the 2010s, the bashers from Bristol played on anything and plugged into everything. Low-budget imports and solid-state combos were what they had and they made that work. They toiled around the U.K. sharpening their sneering tongue, quickening their sting, and focusing their vision. Doing so meant playing small rooms as much as possible. So the need and access for big, potent, top-shelf gear was unnecessary. That volatile energy, sensible setups, and Sten-gun attack anchored both 2017's Brutalism and 2018's Joy as an Act of Resistance. The popularity in those releases opened doors to new tools and the time to explore fresh tones and approaches. When writing Ultra Mono, Bowen and Kiernan looked for sounds rather than riffs. “The noise-making had to be thought of from the start,” Bowen told PG in 2020. “We basically created a sound palette first, and once we created a sound, that sound informed the riffs.” And the most obnoxious sounds on Ultra Mono were intentional. “When we were writing this album, we'd go to random guitar shops and ask them for the weirdest pedals they had,” adds Kiernan. “It may sound useless, but it still might touch you somehow. Every now and then, a pedal that does something really weird will kick you into gear.” Using hip-hop beats as a North Star and often performing on their instruments as drummers, the duo unlocked a combination of heartless sounds for Ultra Mono that elevated Talbot's heartfelt (and challenging) lyrics. For the just-released Crawler, they continued exploring obtuse sounds. Some continued to be unusual to the masses and others were atypical for IDLES. “Car Crash” is a disjointed, cold-war-siren-sounding, brooding banger. Considering its brash, bizarrely brilliant predecessor, it's right in line. However, one track no one saw coming was “The Beachland Ballroom”—a bring-you-to-your knees soul song. The incessant brave exploration advances their brutal power, supports their menacing energy, and paints with broad colors to complement Talbot's biting commentary and tales of personal troubles. Touring ahead of 2021's Crawler (now available), IDLES' Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan invited PG to Nashville's Cannery Ballroom for an extended gear chat before their sold-out show. Just ahead of soundcheck, Kiernan clarified his seemingly callous treatment of his Fenders, while Bowen establishes that his acrylic Electrical Guitar Company EG 500 is heavy to dance about onstage, but its “angry piano” sound makes it worth it. They explain why they need a collective of five pedalboards and 50+ stomps to cover guitar, bass, baritone, synth, inhuman sounds, and whatever they mean when they say “genk.” (In a 2020 interview with PG, Bowen described the term like this: “'Mr. Motivator' is a good example: Lee makes this ‘genk' noise that sounds like a hammer in a metal factory, and he plays that along with the drums, and that part really only occupies a frequency range around 1.2k to 2.3k—which is a large bandwidth, but it's where the transients of the drums and the cymbals sit. That part really pops in that space.” Also, Bowen and Kiernan created a YouTube show called Genks during the pandemic, which focuses on effects. (Even if you're a minimalist, it's worth a watch for the laughs.) Big thanks to IDLES tech Gavin Maxwell. We have been champions of Idles pretty much since our inception here on Riot Act, giving high praise in particular to the way they've managed to inadvertently infiltrate the mainstream without compromising on their ideals, sound or vision. Despite that however, we will admit to being slightly hesitant towards 2020's Ultra Mono. Not a bad album by any stretch (and let's not forget, a record that saw them reach #1 on the UK albums charts) but in our estimation, it didn't bring all the much to the Idles party that we'd not previously heard on breakthrough album Joy as an Act of Resistance or their 2017 debut Brutalism. Fourth album Crawler then, has a fair bit riding on it; do the band continue to stomp forward with more boisterous noisy compositions, or do they try and polish themselves into a more mainstream proposition? Interestingly they might well of done neither of those things ... but, is it any good? https://youtu.be/t7aktt5cDqs (The Beachland Ballroom Video) https://youtu.be/Cw7jOq0op5E (Car Crash Video) https://www.idlesband.com/shop/ (Buy Crawler and other Idles merch) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

This week's episode of is dedicated to two of the greatest indie rock success stories over the last decade. First up is Idles, whose new album Crawler follows up 2020's Ultra Mono and continues down a musical path toward what Steven Hyden recently called “the mix of political righteousness and musical bluntness that once caused people to call The Clash ‘the only band that matters.'” Does Idles actually pull of the tightrope walk on Crawler?Next on the review list is Courtney Barnett, whose new album Things Take Time, Take Time is her first in a little more than three years. While Barnett isn't necessarily as consistently discussed on music publications and music writer Twitter as a band like Idles, her albums are always well-received and her touring business is consistently growing and lucrative, making for an ideal situation for indie rock stardom. Things Take Time, Take Time is surely to continue Barnett's trajectory and build her fervent fan base.In this week's Recommendation Corner, Ian is plugging the latest release from SeeYouSpaceCowboy, and Steve is enjoying A Way Forward, the second album in two years from Brooklyn trio Nation Of Language.

Roots to Grooves

"We are not a punk band", is how lead singer Joe Talbot has described the sound of this Bristol band "IDLES", however we can't deny that IDLES does kind of have that punk energy when it comes to their music. Hard hitting, high energy but lyrically poignant, sarcastic and at times darkly comedic."IDLES" were formed in Bristol in the mid 2000's when after DJ'ing around the city a few of the members decided they wanted to create their own music. It took some time, and several line-up changes, before they finally found their sound, kicking off in 2015 with their debut EP's "Welcome" and "Meat/Meta". Since then they have released 3 full length studio albums, toured the world and remained humble. Joe says their ethos has always been to work hard and not seek gratitude, believing that if you stick to your guns, and your passions, everything will ultimately align. There is so much more to know, so we welcome you to join the conversation with Jay and Jesse and listen to some of their top "IDLES" picks. on this latest edition of Roots to Grooves".To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Greg shared a new album a few weeks back that he was really enjoying. Idles released their sophomore album “Ultra Mono” back in September and is chock-full of some much needed energy this winter. Curious how others felt, Greg sought out the opinions of others, specifically the ones paid for their opinions, and landed on our friends at Pitchfork….so, first up on our special Review The Review TIMES TWO, we review Pitchfork’s review of “Ultra Mono” by Idles.Songs: Idles - “Model Village”Idles - “The Lover”Jay, on his semi-regular perusal of YouTube’s music-related offerings, came across a video called “The Dark Side of Spotify” (YouTube) by Slightly Sociable. The video presents a series of very concerning issues with the platform that Spotify has built, specifically that fraudulent streams were taking hundreds of millions of dollars out of a lot of artists pockets. We dig into the argument and, presuming this video has its facts right, dig in to Spotify quite a bit more. It’s a really good conversation, hope you enjoy it.Song: Ryo Fukui - “It Could Happen To You”Bookending the episode, we have our second round of Review The Review. This week Nick decided to jump right into last week’s “Album’s Coming in 2021” and listened to “OK Human” by Weezer. Feeling he may have started the year off on the wrong album, he consulted a variety of Google’s favorite articles; affirming his suspicion. Finding one article particularly well written, he submitted it for consideration in the week’s pool of potential segments &, to everyone’s surprised that he was awarded the opportunity to present a rare 2nd Review the Review to you today!Okay, I may have exaggerated some of that… Jay listened to it first and texted that everyone that it sucked. Nick immediately ran to Pitchfork to see if they too thought it sucked too (they did!) & then proceeded to listen to the album...also the ‘pool of articles’ part is entirely untrue…Nick didn’t like it either, that part was true though! Seven Song Setlist

WA-CHING....that's the sound of Ali and Dan Seven returning for Season Two of the Seven Song Setlist podcast. Although the doors to live music venues across the country are still locked shut and bands remain unable to tour, gig goers Ali and Dan try their best to replicate the excitement of going to see your favourite artists. From the merch table to the bar, the support band to the headline act, the Seven Song Setlist podcast hopes to support the artists that we love through an exercise in 'gig economy (no, not that kind...), as we argue our case for our most loved songs and try to agree on the songs we would want these bands to play if they could only perform a seven song setlist! And, after scoring their first number one album with Ultra Mono earlier this month, and on the eve of the world premiere of the film Don't Go Gentle, at London's BFI Southbank, who better to kick off the new season with than the ferocious prophets of positivity....the mighty IDLES!Formed in Bristol in 2009 by sixth form friends Joe Talbot and Adam ‘Dev’ Devonshire. Guitarist Mark Bowen, a former dentist who is better known nowadays for ripping off his clothes and parading around on stage in his CK’s rather than ripping out teeth, joined the band after moving from Belfast to Bristol, and by 2014, John Beavis and Lee Kiernan completed the line up that have achieved so much success since they literally roared onto the scene with their 2017 debut album, Brutalism. Championed in the early days by the legend that is Steve Lamacq – the unofficial sixth member of Idles – and the station on which he DJ’s, BBC6Music, IDLES. Their second album, the Mercury music prize nominated Joy As An Act Of Resistance extended a warm embrace to lots of people around the world who needed a band like Idles in their lives to make sense of the chaos. Proof of this can be found in the AF Gang, an online community of over 31 thousands Idles founded by Lindsay Melbourne fans that has become a vital part of of their lives and is now almost as well known as the band themselves. A carnival like atmosphere at their appearance on the Park Stage was one of the highlights of the 2019 edition of the Glastonbury festival, and they capped off last year with their biggest headline show to date, at London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Had this year not robbed us all of live music, there is not doubt that the tracks from IDLES latest offering, Ultra Mono, would have filled arenas around the country and propelled them ever closer to the top of festival bills around the world. We also chat about the 80's Australian indie heroes, the Go-Betweens, the recent announcement that Arctic Monkeys are releasing a live album with proceeds going to War Child, where IDLES go next and if they'll follow Turner and co. and end up as the moon's next resident band...EPISODE LINKSAF GANG(from the merch table) Arctic Monkeys live at the Royal Albert Hall for War Child Don't Go Gentle: A Film About IDLES(this ep's support act) The Go-Betweens 'Streets of Your Town' IDLES npr music Tiny Desk Concert (one of our favourite things on the internet) - IDLES perform 'Never Fight A Man With A Perm' on the Park Stage, Glastonbury 2019 IDLES official website; store full of incredible merchandise and music - KEXP Performance and interview with Mark Bowen

The term ‘Toxic Masculinity’ has come to represent society’s expectation that men be active, aggressive, tough, daring and dominant. Some believe this narrative to form part of a politically-motivated war on men, whilst others argue men should be encouraged to share their vulnerabilities, failures and doubts, so as to spark a bigger conversation. With Suicide the most common cause of death for men under the age of 50 in the UK, are we having enough of these difficult conversations?Blaine travels to IDLES’ hometown of Bristol, to talk with vocalist Joe Talbot about male vulnerability, overcoming grief and to hear about his experiences over the band’s meteoric rise, ahead of the release of their mighty UK No1 third album, Ultra Mono. This week’s opening thought comes from Frank Carter, vocalist with Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, speaking about the pressure on men today to measure up against outdated male archetypes. At the end of this episode you will hear ‘Watching Yourself Slowly Disappear’ from Mystery Jets’ critically-acclaimed new album ‘A Billion Heartbeats’. The musical revolution will be televised as Dave Hanratty and guest co-host Zara Hedderman get lost in the vivid world of songs in advertisements for this week's top five. It's a busy episode in general with lots of news, a real-time reveal of the Mercury Prize winner and a spirited discussion on UK not-punks IDLES. ACT ONE [5:07]: Rolling Stone provides both list and op-ed gold, Dave is fierce proud of his heroes, Zara struggles with hot drinks, and Thom Yorke feels especially cheerful. ACT TWO [28:58]: IDLES have caused quite a racket over the past few years thanks to raucous live shows and unflinching, opinionated guitar-driven missives. Third studio album Ultra Mono arrives amidst something of a backlash. Let's get into it.  ACT THREE [54:08]: When we say 'song in an ad', you'll likely immediately think of many of our selections here. Dave and Zara celebrate a simpler time when 30-second TV snippets led to musical glory. For some, anyway... Support NO ENCORE on Patreon: http://patreon.com/noencore

A vos agendas ! IDLES - “Grounds” from the 2020 album Ultra Mono on Partisan Records. Bristol-based post-punk band IDLES return this fall with their third LP, titled Ultra Mono, out September 25th via Partisan. They've previously shared the singles "A Hymn" and  “Mr. Motivator,” and for today's Song of the Day, we're sharing the single "Grounds." Frontman Joe Talbot explained in a press release: “We wanted to write a song that embodied self-belief, and gave us self-belief — a counter-punch to all the doubt we build up from all the noise we so easily let in. We wanted to make the sound of our own hearts’ marching band, armed with a jack hammer and a smile. We wanted to make the sound of our engine starting. So we did. Thank you.”  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate

Fitzcarraldo 8, nueva singladura Amazonas “arriba”.
