William Palmer was a British doctor known as the Rugeley Poisoner. He was convicted of murdering his friend so he could steal money to pay off gambling debts. Although he was convicted of one murder, it is suspected that Palmer poisoned up to 15 people, including his wife and infant children. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the serial poisoner William Palmer. William had a lot of advantages growing up. His father made a lot of money in the timber business, much of it illegally, and he left a lot of it behind when he died. William was a physician, but he was lazy. There's often a ton of art in medical spaces, but who are the curators of those health system collections? In s3e44, Platemark host Ann Shafer speaks with Naomi Huth, chief curator and director of the art collection for NYC Health + Hospitals. Held within the Arts in Medicine department, NYC Health + Hospitals has one of the largest public (non museum) art collections in New York City with more than 7,000 works of art, including a number of murals. Their goal is to make art accessible to the public and integrate the collection into healing environments across NYC Health + Hospitals' eleven acute care hospitals, five nursing homes, six diagnostic and treatment centers, and more than seventy community-based primary care sites. A major part of Naomi's job is to highlight the concepts of diversity and accessibility in collecting, collaboration, and mentoring emerging artists. She has focused on acquiring works by underrepresented artists to improve and diversify the collection as well as integrating diverse perspectives into the collection and fostering a better understanding of the issues of today through the lens of art. We talk about how art can reduce stress, offer peace, and help both patients and their families and medical staff members find moments of respite in busy and intense spaces. It's different yet not from being a museum curator.  From 2012–2021, Naomi was the curator for the Joseph M. Cohen Family Collection, a large private collection with six locations around the United States. She has previously held curatorial positions at the New Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Rubin Museum, and the de Young Museum. Naomi is a member of the Young Collectors Council acquisitions committee at the Guggenheim, the advisory board of the Center for Photography in Woodstock, Independent Curators International, and is an accredited member of the Appraisers Association of America. She earned her M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from the City College of New York (CCNY) and her B.S. in Fashion Design and Art History from Drexel University. William Palmer. William T. Palmer at the age of 18 joined the Bristich 61st Regiment in Winchester, England and was transported to the island of St. Helena, where he served for two years as part of the Superior Guards who were in charge of guarding Napoleon Bonaparte. After Napoleons funeral in 1821, he was transferred to other duties until he was discharged from service after 15 years in Toronto, Canada. He went to college, and was married. Then he moved to New York for a few years, working on building the railroad betwen Rochester and Auburn. In 1840, he moved to Michigan with his family, settling in Battle Creek. He was locally known as a well respected member of the community, working as a gardener. In 1881 he invited the Chicago Times to come interview him in his home, so that he could tell his story of his time on the island of St. Helena and the death of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is a fascinating account from a man who experienced a part of history. The ancient and oft quoted Hippocratic oath exhorts all doctors “to do no harm.” Technically the exact words are: “I will abstain from all intentional wrongdoing and harm.” It also states that “Neither will I administer poison to anybody.” One Victorian gentleman in England, who did not get the memo, was Dr. William Palmer, who, in the mid-19th century, although tried for only one murder, is purported to have poisoned several individuals. Among his alleged victims: his wife, his mother-in-law, his brother, and four of his own children and anyone he managed to take out a life insurance policy on with himself as the beneficiary. Journalist and author Stephen Bates wrote a book on the man Queen Victoria called “a black leg” in her diary, entitled THE POISONER and he joins us on Murder Most Foul.

Booze as muse or a sure road to ruin? In this month's episode, William Palmer – author of In Love with Hell: Drink in the Lives and Work of Eleven Writers – and Henry Jeffreys – author of Empire of Booze and The Cocktail Dictionary – join the Slightly Foxed team to mull over why alcohol is such an enduring feature in literature.  From the omnipresence of cocktails in John Cheever's short stories and ritual aperitifs in Patricia Highsmith's Ripley novels to Mr Picksniff falling into Mrs Todger's fireplace in Martin Chuzzlewit and P. G. Wodehouse's hangover remedies for booze-soaked Bertie Wooster, drinks are social signifiers in fiction. Charles Dickens was fond of sherry cobblers and Jean Rhys knocked back Pernod in Paris, while Malcolm Lowry was a dipsomaniac and Flann O'Brien dreamed up alcoholic ink for the Irish Times, rendering readers drunk from fumes. We ask why gin denotes despair and port is always jovial, and question whether hitting the bottle helps or hinders the creative process in writers. Following a convivial sherry, we're whisked away on a wet-your-whistle-stop tour of drinking dens with our friends at London Literary Tours, barrelling from bars propped up by Oscar Wilde to the follies of Dylan Thomas at Soho's French House via Ian Fleming's Vesper cocktail at Dukes. And we finish with a final round of reading recommendations, visiting a whisky distillery in Pakistan in Lawrence Osbourne's The Wet and the Dry, enjoying Happy Hour with Marlowe Granados and stopping for a nightcap at Kingsley Amis's ghostly local The Green Man.
