Listen to Alex's story that highlights the importance of community, creativity, and a mindset shift in overcoming the stigma associated with stuttering. In this episode: 00:00 Intro 01:05 About Alex Delgado 05:06 Stuttering Support Group 08:27 The Interview! 12:38 Why did you decide to become an open stutterer? 20:55 Train Wreck vs Wonderful Experience of Stuttering 23:40 Alex and the Stuttering Support Group 25:59 Alex is a writer 30:03 Thank you! Notes: Alex discusses his ambition to be influencer on YouTube, where he provides advice and share experiences with other stutterers. Through self-discovery and connecting with others, Alex realized the importance of authenticity and made a conscious effort to embrace open stuttering. He now openly discloses his stutter in conversations and has found that this not only reduces his anxiety but also empowers him to face challenges with greater confidence. Alex advocates for reframing stuttering as a unique trait rather than a limitation. Referring to the book Beyond the Fear of Stuttering by Mary Wood, it is emphasized how a mindset shift, such as reframing "train wreck speaking experiences" as "wonderful moments of stuttering," can help transform one's perspective. Alex delved into the psychological dimensions of stuttering, emphasizing how emotional states like stress and anxiety can exacerbate fluency issues. He stresses the importance of building a supportive community and shifting the narrative around stuttering from one of struggle to one of strength and uniqueness. Alex considers his participation in the Stuttering Support Group on Discord a significant aid in embracing and accepting his stutter. He also shares his passion for writing, mentioning his current projects, including a mystery novel and an anthology of short stories. He has published some of his short stories online on Inkitt. The once-coveted post seems less fun, given the tension and polarization on university campuses these days, as well as more challenging than ever. When her eight-year term as dean of the University of Virginia School of Law ends on June 30, she can take pride in around three dozen new faculty hires, completion of a $400 million capital campaign (more than a year ahead of schedule), and a #4 ranking in U.S. News—the highest in the history of the school. What are some of the secrets of Dean Goluboff's success? What does she view as the two biggest challenges facing American law schools today? From June to October of 1877, the US Calvary waged a brutal war against the Nimiipuu people, or the Nez Perce Tribe in the place we now call Idaho. This week on PNN, I am speaking about censorship in our K-12 schools, universities, and public libraries--all in the name of alleged 'parent rights.' The title of this week's show is "Free speech vs parent's rights--aka--democracy vs bigotry, reflects the ugly truth of the times. GOP conservatives have embraced open bigotry--now comfortable "saying the quiet part out loud." The GOP of Trump celebrates racism, misogyny, religious bigotry (including anti-semitism), homophobia, transphobia, and anti-intellectualism. They have embraced neo Nazism. They are the new Confederacy and Jan. 6th was the 21st century form of Fort Sumpter. I will talk about heroic teachers and moronic politicians. I will also speak to Trump's latest threats--including a death threat against retiring General Mark Milley--and anyone else who dared to criticize his majesty. We will have another segment of "My Little Margie" and of course the Jackass of the Week Award. Come join me. Jeanine
Last spring, South Carolina English teacher Mary Wood was horrified when her students reported her to the local school board for teaching about race. As she starts a new school year, we ask what it's like for her to step back into the classroom. Read more:Last spring in Chapin, S.C., two students in high school English teacher Mary Wood‘s class reported her to the local school board for teaching about race. Wood had assigned her all-White AP English Language and Composition class readings from Ta-Nehisi Coates's “Between the World and Me,” a book that examines what it means to be Black in America. In emails, the students complained that the book made them ashamed to be White, violating a South Carolina rule that forbids teachers from making students “feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress” on account of their race.Wood's case drew national, polarizing attention. Conservative outlets and commentators decried Wood's “race-shaming against White people.” Left-leaning media declared her a martyr to “cancel culture,” the latest casualty of raging debates over how to teach race, racism and history that have engulfed the country since the coronavirus pandemic began.Wood is not the first teacher to get caught in the crossfire: The Post previously reported that at least 160 educators have lost their positions since the pandemic began because of political debates. South Carolina is one of 18 states to restrict education on race since 2021, according to an Education Week tally. And at least half the country has passed laws that limit instruction on race, history, sex or gender identity, according to a Washington Post analysis. Today, as a new school year begins, education reporter Hannah Natanson talks to Wood about what it's like for her to return to teaching, and whether she feels she can trust her students again.

As ecosystems collapse and the climate emergency intensifies, the government often uses its authority to allow the very harm that it is supposed to prevent. Sound crazy? It is. The granting of permits is a battleground where corporations, with their oodles of money to buy influence, have the upper hand over nature. In the face of corporate greed and the enormity of the climate crisis, we need action now before it is too late. An ancient and enduring principle is the trust doctrine. It asserts public property rights to crucial resources such as forests, rivers, minerals, and fisheries. Its core logic compels the government, as trustee, to protect nature and to safeguard the resources we rely on for survival. UN Secretary-General Guterres says, “We must end the merciless, relentless, senseless war on nature.” Amen to that. Recorded at the University of Oregon.

Today we would like to introduce you to one of our newest colleagues here at IHMC, Dr. Kaleen Lavin, a research scientist who investigates the molecular mechanisms by which the body adapts and reacts to stressors such as exercise, training and aging. Kaleen came onboard at IHMC last year and is known for her use of computational biology techniques as a means to understand and improve human health, performance and resilience. She also is interested in the use of exercise as a countermeasure for a range of disease conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Today we will talk to her about some of her most recent work that examined the molecular effects of exercise training in skeletal muscle and in people with Parkinson's. We also talk to Kaleen about her recent paper that took a comprehensive look at the current literature surrounding the molecular and cellular processes underlying the molecular benefits that exercise induces in humans. The paper appeared earlier this year in Comprehensive Physiology and was titled, “State of Knowledge on Molecular Adaptations to Exercise in Humans.” Kaleen is a graduate of Georgetown University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in biology. She also earned a master's in sports nutrition and exercise science from Marywood University in Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in human bioenergetics from Ball State University in Indiana. Show notes: [00:03:02] Dawn opens the interview mentioning that Kaleen grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and asks Kaleen about her passion for music as a youth. [00:03:25] Ken asks Kaleen about her high school years and how she became a competitive swimmer. [00:04:26] Dawn mentions that Kaleen was an excellent student growing up, but that it wasn't until her junior year of high school that she became interested in science. Dawn asks if it were a teacher who inspired Kaleen. [00:05:21] Dawn asks what led Kaleen to attend Georgetown University after graduating from high school. [00:05:57] Dawn asks if Kaleen knew she wanted to major in biology when she first arrived on campus at Georgetown. [00:06:45] Ken asks about Kaleen's experience of becoming a part of the Howard Hughes Program at Georgetown, which led to her gaining experience working in lab. [00:08:47] Dawn mentions that Kaleen transitioned from competitive swimming to running during her undergraduate years, running a marathon and half marathon. Dawn asks if Kaleen's father, who is an avid marathoner, gave her the incentive to start signing up for marathons. [00:13:19] Dawn asks Kaleen about a faculty advisor who noticed her passion for running and exercise and helped her decide what to pursue for her master's degree. [00:15:23] Ken asks Kaleen what led her to pursue her master's at Marywood University, a small Catholic University in Scranton. [00:16:56] Ken asks Kaleen what prompted her to pursue a Ph.D. in exercise science at Ball State University, which has one of the longest-standing human performance programs in the country. [00:17:57] Dawn mentions Kaleen's experience with no-breath laps as part of her training when she was in high school on the swim team. Dawn asks Kaleen to explain what no-breath laps are. [00:19:00] Dawn asks Kaleen about a study she conducted for her master's thesis at Marywood that examined the effects of controlled frequency breath swimming on pulmonary function. [00:22:13] Ken asks about how Kaleen's time at Ball State set her up for her post-doc work at Center for Exercise Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. [00:24:31] Ken asks what it was about UAB that attracted Kaleen to do her post-doc work there. [00:26:08] Dawn asks about a study published in 2017 by a group at UAB led by Marcas Bamman where researchers took people with Parkinson's disease and ran them through a high-intensity exercise program, finding that you could not only help people preserve some function but al...
After a short summer hiatus, we are back with Mary Wood, who, after her first interview with Greg, published her first book Beyond the Fear of Stuttering: My Journey to Self-Acceptance and Freedom. Join Greg and Mary as they talk about the wonderful life lessons Mary shares in the book, including the powerful role of thought in controlling behaviour as well as what it takes to overcome fear and rejection. Mary challenges us to change our perspectives on how we approach stuttering (she sees it as a GIFT) and discusses her belief that it's not up to others to determine who we are. As a pastor in the Unity Church, Mary reflects on the role of spirituality in stuttering support - forgiveness and gratitude - and how there is so much more to people who stutter than simply stuttering. Since 1993, Mary has inspired people at conferences in Canada, the United States, parts of Europe, and Great Britain. Currently Mary resides in Lee's Summit Missouri, USA.

It's that time of year again. Time to gather with loved ones to eat and drink too much! Well, we don't have to do that. We could focus on the conversations and laughter with friends and family, but food and drink do become a big part of our gatherings. This week I'm joined by dietitian and Clinical Coordinator for Dietetic Internships at Marywood, Micki Orlowsky...a woman who dishes out a heap of positivity and healthy servings of humor! She shares her approach to eating this time of year when we often have many opportunities to indulge. Join me next week for a special edition of Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl on Wednesday, November 24, when my focus will be gratitude. I will be sharing some of the things I've written in various gratitude journals over time and I encourage you to share what you are grateful for. You can submit an audio message through Anchor or send me a message on Facebook at Funny Wine Girl Jeannine. Uncork some kindness this season! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
