Elizabeth Pizzarello was born a sighted child in the Bronx, New York. She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Cedar Crest College, in Pennsylvania. Just weeks before graduating, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disorder that contributed to her eventual blindness. After ten years of living blind, in 2012 Elizabeth was the beneficiary of a newly developed lens implant procedure with miraculous results. The surgery took her from a state of complete blindness to the limited use of one eye.  The inspiration for writing this memoir came from that moment of profound gratitude when Elizabeth experienced her newly regained sight post surgery. Elizabeth's poem “WOW” was composed during the first month of her sight being restored. The ability to see the incredible world around her again had such a profound impact that she was compelled to write the poem in an attempt to distill the emotional magnitude of her journey. That is why the poem occupies such a prominent position at the beginning of her book. This book recounts moments from her story about going from life as a sighted child, through early adulthood, when she first received the devastating diagnosis of the disease that led to the gradual reduction of her sight that ended in blindness. But going blind and being blind are not the same thing, nor is going blind just about learning to live in darkness. It is Elizabeth's desire to explain the psychological complexity of that transition as well as share the incredible twist of fate that enabled her to have a portion of her vision restored a decade later.  Elizabeth is working on a collection of children's stories that embody themes of compassion, determination, resilience, and pushing past limiting beliefs based on the lessons she learned from her experience as a disabled individual.

To put it in the most basic terms possible, race is no longer a factor in admissions. At the center of this decision, were two court cases, Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina, which have changed the direction of admissions in the United States. Advocates across the country have expressed concern about representation and diversity on college campuses and in several fields, such as STEM, in the coming years.Learn more about CITI Program: https://about.citiprogram.org/References: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/applying/articles/how-does-affirmative-action-affect-college-admissions https://www.brookings.edu/articles/how-will-the-supreme-courts-affirmative-action-ruling-affect-college-admissions/

She facilitates accommodations for students under the Americans with Disabilities Act. She has a B.S. in Psychology, from East Stroudsburg University, an M.Ed. in Counseling and Human Services, and a Ph.D., in Special Education from Lehigh University. She has also worked in Disability Services at Cedar Crest College, Moravian College, and Chestnut Hill College. The best disability service supports start with student self-advocacy and self-determination—skills that are often new to first-year students. Dee tells us that “The most important part of connecting a student with what they need in college is that very first conversation [in the disability services office] … This may be the first experience a student has had talking outside of the family about their disability. A student needs to feel comfortable, and this takes practice.”The ratio of students to DSS support staff can vary wildly, but 400:1 is not uncommon. Under these circumstances, self-advocacy is crucial. It starts with self-awareness. When a student knows the answers to the following questions: -       What is my diagnosis?-       How does it impact my life?-       What impacts does my diagnosis have in the classroom?-       What are the impacts from a social perspective? They are more likely to get the support they need.We also discuss decreasing the stigma of asking for help and the differences between support in high school versus college. Accommodations in college are meant to create access whereas in high school, they are focused on success. In college, success is dependent upon the student.

When I first read your bio and your book, I looked at it and I said, “Oh, she's into law and meditation. No wonder why she could bring us back to a moment of zen.” But I got that wrong, didn't I? Karolyn: Yes, it's law and mediation and there's a very little zen about the law. Brian: Amen for that. So, how did you go from a lawyer and doing mediation to writing a book about “eating elephants?” » Expand To View More - Click Here Karolyn: Well, I guess I'm kind of a slow learner and it took me 25 years to realize that practicing law and litigating was no way to resolve disputes. Bashing each other around the courtroom and being antagonistic and hostile all the time is just not a good way to live. So, that lead me to mediation, which is a much more sane way to resolve disputes. Editor's Note: Due to technical issues with WOBC's radio transmitter, the recording of this show has significantly decreased audio quality. We have done as much as possible to repair the damage, and we apologize for the issues. On May 30, 2017, Carmen Twillie Ambar was named as the 15th President of Oberlin College by the Board of Trustees, and is the first Black woman to hold the position in the College's history. After settling into the job, she announced that under her leadership, the College would begin an Academic and Administrative Program Review (AAPR), a sweeping audit of all college offices, programs, and departments. Under AAPR, a steering committee of faculty, staff, and students will conduct research and analysis from now until next spring, subsequently making recommendations to the board. In her previous role as President of Cedar Crest College, Ambar initiated a similar process. But is that a good thing? Many faculty members don't think so. At Cedar Crest, AAPR resulted in the proposed elimination of five majors; sustained lobbying efforts by students and faculty only saved two of them. What's more, the process was opaque, deceptive, and at times disturbing. No notes were taken of steering committee meetings, leaving no record of how and why certain decisions were made; a faculty member was fired after being told in writing that they would not, leading to a lawsuit against Cedar Crest; and Ambar's chosen consulting firm, Stevens Strategy, made fraudulent claims in a presentation to the Cedar Crest board and engaged in a practice of ranking majors by their financial value. Should we be worried? (Daniel is very worried.) We'll ask President Ambar about that, and also find out why she thinks Oberlin is the best college in the country. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-weekly/support

Lynn S. Evans, CFP® is a national leader in the financial planning industry, successful author, speaker, host of a top-ranked podcast, and has a strong record of accomplishment as CEO of financial planning and wealth advisory companies, including her latest venture, Women of Substance LLC. She has developed several groundbreaking presentations on the relationship between women and money. Her presentations encourage participants to look into their past for clues on what they were taught about money and how that colors how they relate to money as adult women, how to break those bonds, and how to have a happy, positive relationship with money. In her recent book, “Power of the Purse: Fear Free Finances for Baby Boomer Women”, Lynn addressed what she views as the financial knowledge gap of Baby Boomer women where traditional stereotypes are being re-examined and exciting new opportunities await on the horizon. Viewing divorce, retirement, and widowhood not as a time of withdrawal and fear, but gearing up for new challenges and rewards, Lynn helps women prepare financially — and emotionally — for these significant transitions. Lynn earned her BA from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She’s held the CFP® mark of distinction for more than 25 years. Lynn is active in her community and has held leadership positions in a variety of civic organizations including the Women’s Resource Center of Scranton, which she co-founded, Maternal and Family Health Services, charter member of the NE PA Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, Cedar Crest College’s Alumnae Association, and the President’s Advisory Board of Keystone College, Factoryville, Pennsylvania. Lynn and her husband, Patrick, enjoy spending family time with their son, Tyler, and boating on Lake Wallenpaupack in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.
