Dr. Ric Charlesworth is a bloody ripper and it was a privilege for me to chat with a true legend of Australian sport. He is a Medical Doctor, Former Captain of the Australian Hockey Team and the Western Australian State Hockey Team and Cricket Team, having played hockey for Australia for a record 17 years and first-class cricket for nearly a decade. He was the National Coach of the Australian Women's Hockey Team from 1993 to 2000 and between 2009 and 2014, he coached the Men's team. In four World Cups and three Olympic Games as coach of Australia, Charlesworth's teams won Gold on 6 occasions and once won bronze. They won 8 of 9 Champions Trophy tournaments and 2 Commonwealth Games Gold medals… this is a record never equalled in the sport. Between 1994 and 2014 Charlesworth was ‘Coach of the Year' 8 times! Apart from being a four-time Olympian as a player, he's also written five books, worked with Fremantle Football Club for two years as their high-performance manager and did I mention he was a member of Federal parliament for a lazy decade (pre coaching)? Amazing. Enjoy. riccharlesworth.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meet the Fittest Woman on Earth. Tia-Clair Toomey is the 4x reigning CrossFit Games Champion. During that same span in her off season she has also earned the distinction of Olympian, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist in weightlifting… and, oh! Almost forgot. She's also a bobsledder. With a laundry list of world class accolades next to her name Tia joins today's show to explain why her physical abilities alone may only be 20% responsible for her success.   In today's show Tia shares how the foundation laid by her family in Australia prepared her for an athletic career that has been defined by a meteoric rise and sustained dominance. We discuss the root of her unique internal drive she developed at a young age. Why she enjoys the process more than the victories. The importance of family, purpose and understanding your why. How she went from “spinning her wheels” to the CrossFit Games podium and Olympics in less than 3 years. Why she believes the title of Fittest on Earth doesn't tell the whole story. What keeps her motivated to stay at the top of her game and why she stays open to new opportunities.   Mentioned In the Show: Books: “How I Became Fittest Woman on Earth: My story so far” - By Tia-Clair Toomey   Follow Tia-Clair: Instagram: @tiaclair1 Tia's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSaWOJZ1kyZ54B5njsbOAsw?app=desktop PRVN YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZnZcxddYCSPCPxDmeUSl9A Tia's Website: https://tiaclair.com/ PRVN Fitness Website: https://prvnfitness.com/ Tia's Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/255283792190306/   Follow The Professional Athlete Podcast with Ken Gunter: Instagram: @kengunter_tpa Website: https://www.kengunter.com/ YouTube: Ken Gunter https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRhgjkoSiJXAbS_MIasvvzQ/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kengunterpodcast Audio recorded with SquadCast: https://squadcast.fm/?ref=kengunter Produced By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter Music By: Justin Gunter, Ken Gunter

Her research has been critical in creating mental health awareness amongst the organisations she works with, combining neurochemistry and her strong background in education and engagement.   Lee has a particular passion for encouraging a healthy body and healthy mind, being a two-time Olympic track and field athlete, Commonwealth Games Gold medalist and World Championships Bronze medalist, competing in the 400m and 4 x 400m relay, during 1990-2000.   Lee is the Managing Director at Fit & Healthy Business, where she aims to provide targeted, engaging and energetic health and wellness programs to optimise employees physical and mental wellbeing. Central to Fit & Healthy Business's health programming is our focus on designing programs to improve company productivity and reduce absenteeism through improved employee health outcomes.   The evidence is clear and repeated that healthier workplaces are more productive workplaces. Subsequently, employers have a unique opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of their staff and in doing so, influence the productivity of their workplace.   Questions I asked on today's podcast:   (2:40) Who is Dr Lee Naylor, and what has your journey been so far? A few weeks ago I was incredibly fortunate to have a good chat to highly regarded Australian Walks coach; Brent Vallance. Brent was a fantastic walker himself representing Australia in the 20km road race at the Kuala Lumpar Commonwealth Games in 1998. Unfortunately, a chronic Hamstring injury ended his career prematurely but fortunately for the walking world he turned his attention to coaching! After completing a graduate coaching position at the AIS and majoring in coaching at university, Brent soon helped guide Nathan Deeks to his bronze in the 20km at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Brent was the official Olympics Team Coach for racewalking on that trip and has been at every Olympics since! Other walkers he took on around this time included; a young, Jared Tallent and Adam Rutter, amongst others. In this chat, I really enjoyed quizzing Brent on his and Jared’s journey together as coach and athlete to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. We open the chat discussing how Brent monitored Jared’s training load. From 2006 to 2012, Brent was the AIS Chief Coach for Racewalking and took the Australian walks program to new heights. He took teams overseas each year, organized training camps and helped foster the development of the Australian walking program. He is highly sought after, both locally and overseas, as a presenter. And of course, today he continues to currently coach a number of world class race walkers, including; - 2018 20km race walk Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Jemima Montag. - 2019 IAAF World Championships Bronze medalist 20km race walk, 2019 European Champion; Perseus Kalstrom – Sweden. - 2x Olympian/Lithuania national record holder 20km walk (Brigita Virbalyte – Lithuania. - 2x Olympian and New Zealand record holder (3000m, 10,000m, 20km and 50km race walk) Quentin Rew – NZ - Olympian and 5x World Cup representative (Rhydian Cowley – Australia) - 2019 World University Games bronze medallist (Anežka Drahotová – Czech Republic

For episode 66 of the Hoopsfix podcast we have Andrea Congreaves on the show, widely regarded the greatest female basketball player to ever come out of the UK.The sixteen-year pro was the first Brit to play in the WNBA, and won titles all over Europe after an absolutely dominant college career at Mercer. It is hard to be succinct when it comes listing her career accomplishments but start with having her jersey retired at Mercer, being named to both the school and conference Hall of Fame. Her time at Mercer saw her lead NCAA Division 1 in scoring in her Junior and Senior years (33.0 and 31.0ppg respectively), whilst being named an All-American in 1993.From there, the 6'2″ ‘shooting forward' as she likes to label herself, turned pro in Italy, before signing with Valencia in Spain where she won the first of multiple domestic titles across Europe. She got selected by the Charlotte Sting with the 26th pick of the inaugural WNBA draft, playing 3 seasons in the WNBA, two with the Sting and one with Orlando Miracle, starting 58 of her 84 games – at a time when there were only 8 teams in the league.Congreaves won titles in France, Spain, the UK along with multiple Euroleague Final Four appearances (runners up twice) and is up there amongst the greatest players to ever come out of the UK.Having made her England senior debut at 17 years old in 1987, she picked up 40 caps for England and 15 for GB, and also went on represent Great Britain 20 years later for the reformation of the programme. Congreaves won a Commonwealth Games Gold medal in 1991 and bronze in 2006 – where she led the team in scoring at 36 years old.In this two hour episode, hear from Andrea on: How she was first discovered by Paul Stimpson through Crystal Palace's School of Basketball Her early years at Crystal Palace, Brixton Topcats and London YMCA The things that happened during her development that she attributes to her success Her lack of care or knowledge of individual stats and performances The inspiration Carol Paris was for her coming up How Crystal Palace hosting the WICB led to her first interest from US colleges The lack of her belief in her own abilities and talents The recruiting process and the likes of Kansas, UNC, UCLA, Ole Miss and others all chasing her Knowing Mercer was the place for her and having a feel for it Transitioning to the US from the UK both on and off the court The coaching staff at Mercer trying to work out the best position for her What she feels was her natural position The drastic increase in her output from Freshman to Sophomore year and what caused it Leading NCAA Division 1 in scoring for two straight years but not thinking about turning pro Playing for the national team whilst at college Winning gold at the Commonwealth games in 1991 in Edinburgh What it meant to represent her country on the national team Her standout memories playing for the national team Following the current GB national team program The younger generation coming through and whether they are aware of her career Not being involved with basketball at all at the moment to take a break Her desire to be involved with the national team programs in the future Turning pro and signing her first deal in Italy The differences between pro life and college life Being the only British female player on the continent playing professionally Being seen as a traitor for not coming back to play in England Winning her first pro title in Spain Every opposing team thinking she was an American Coming up just short in the Euroleague final and how it still stings to this day First getting wind the WNBA was being founded Not believing she got drafted when she got the call from the league Her experiences in the WNBA, how it compared to Europe and her memories with the Sting and Miracle The level of the WNBA compared to Europe How her time in the WNBA came to and end and how she chose to focus on Europe Playing in Korea and getting selected in their draft The final stages of her playing days in Wales with Rhondda Rebels in the run up the 2006 Commonwealth Games Making the transition into the next phase of her career after playing Her favourite basketball memory Best player she ever played against Her relationship with coach Mark Clark and the impact he has had on her career What she wants her playing legacy to be And much, much more! 68.92 metres (226 feet). That's how far Kathryn Mitchell threw her javelin to win the 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medal. Or as I like to call it, far as f*ck. It's also the furthest any female in the world has thrown a javelin in the last seven years. Apart from being an amazing athlete and competing at two Olympics and four Commonwealth Games, Kathryn is also a super-interesting, raw, real and relatable person who, like the rest of us, is trying to navigate and negotiate the peaks and troughs, joy and tears, pleasure and pain of the human experience. The All Blacks Sevens' quest for Olympic gold in Tokyo next year has been given a major boost, with four Super Rugby players set to join the 2019/2020 campaign.New Zealand Rugby announced that Caleb Clarke (Blues), Etene Nanai-Seturo (Chiefs), Salesi Rayasi (Hurricanes) and Scott Gregory (Highlanders) will shift into the All Blacks Sevens campaign with their sights focussed on the Tokyo Olympic Games. With the support of their Super Rugby teams, the players have been given the green light to move into the sevens programme, said NZ Rugby head of high performance Mike Anthony."We're delighted that these players – who have all been in the All Blacks Sevens environment previously – have put up their hand, and want to have a crack at making the Olympic squad."We have worked very closely with all the Super clubs to ensure we could support those players who were genuinely keen to be involved in the Tokyo Olympic Games. We also wanted to ensure that the Super clubs were not significantly disadvantaged."Our first step was to gauge individual player interest, and then All Blacks Sevens management presented to those players before a firm commitment was sought."The four players selected have all previously played for the All Blacks Sevens which speaks volumes to the culture that (coach) Clark Laidlaw and his team have really built within that environment. It's been a key focus of the management to offer young players world class rugby experience so to have these four put their hand up to return is a great result."Clarke, Nanai-Seturo and Rayasi will join the All Blacks Sevens squad after their Mitre 10 Cup commitments at the end of this year while Gregory will assemble with the Highlanders until March 2020."One of the biggest considerations in this process has been the team environment. We have a group of contracted players that have won the Commonwealth Games Gold and Rugby World Cup Sevens last year, so we're very mindful that those coming in need to complement that group," Anthony said.Rayasi was a member of the World Cup winning All Blacks Sevens team in 2018 while Nanai-Seturo won Commonwealth Games gold with the team last April."We think we have the right mix of players that are coming in – size, speed and power, they will be a great addition to the All Blacks Sevens programme," Anthony added. The Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, and Highlanders are free to recruit an additional player to their 2020 squads. The Crusaders are the only team to not have representation in the wider sevens squad.

Today, the boys chat with Sam Bradley (née Warriner), former world #1 triathlete and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist for New Zealand, after a nine week hiatus following a whirlwind world coaching tour with Nike in Portland, OR and Sydney, Australia. Sam discusses explicitly how she utilises a mental "switch" to move between her athletic / coaching self and her family life (which both Paul and Adam discuss is something they're very poor at doing). This, we believe, is something which everyone can learn to be better at, especially in this digitally connected age. We discuss Sam's athletic career which peaked very late at the age of 37 when she won the ITU World Cup Series in 2008. Sam turned to triathlon very late in life and didn't actually turn PRO until 2005, so had a meteoric rise to fame following that. Sam recently attended the 3-day Swim Smooth Coach Education Course in Sydney, Australia and found that despite having spent her entire career breathing only to her right - through our recognition that "if something's going to go wrong in your stroke, it'll go wrong when you breathe" - we found that she's actually faster by 3-4s per 100m breathing to her left. The interesting thing here is that most of the ITU events Sam raced were on LEFT hand turn courses where it's a significant advantage to breathe to the LEFT (for navigation purposes etc) and not the RIGHT. This proved to be quite an eye-opener for Sam despite how accomplished she's obviously already been in the sport, giving way to the notion that sometimes it's the simple things that can make all the difference. You can read a lot more about Sam's coaching work at www.sweat7.com and on Instagram @sweat7sam

Then in a transition that surprised many people, she switched sports! She took up the bobsled and represented Australia at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, becoming the 1st able-bodied Australian woman to compete at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Now, she’s finally pursuing her childhood ambition to become a doctor - not in sport’s medicine however but as a gynecologist (or “vagina doctor” to use her words). In between all of that, she’s experienced and survived toxic relationships, a 13 year battle with bulimia and disordered eating, miscarriages, IVF, breast implants, struggles with breastfeeding and retirement as well as a cervical cancer scare - all of which is documented in her real, raw and vulnerable autobiography. In this conversation, we discuss everything from how she started running as a way to spend time with her Dad, why she describes the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics as one of the highlights of her career as well as busting stigmas around women’s health and the symptoms you should talk to your doctor about. I spent 3 weeks working The Commonwealth Games held in the glorious Australian state of Queensland for Gold Coast 2018. For those not familiar with this event, it’s a multi-sport event in the similar vein as the Summer Olympics except the only countries that can compete are members states of the British Commonwealth. In the next hour, you will hear a pre-event photographers brief prior to the weightlifting, working with Clive Rose and new Nikon ambassador, Quinn Rooney in an outdoor pool bathed in Queensland sunshine, transmitting to editors in the media centre, shooting beach volleyball, badminton, gymnastic, track cycling, hockey and table tennis to name a few. I will also run through the positives and negatives of shooting a new sport each day and of course it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t get distracted and go on the occasional rant. Just a note, I mention the Winter Olympics podcast a few times in this show which I am still working on. Seems I recorded a lot more unintelligible crap than normal so its taking a bit longer to edit than planned but, without further ado, I hope you enjoy the, Sports Photography Philosophy Podcast!
