In this week's Interview Classic episode, we present two interviews. First, we jump back ten years to PWTorch editor Wade Keller's June 8, 2012 interview with former WWE Creative Team Member ('04-'10) Chris DeJoseph with fascinating insight into Vince McMahon's creative process and writing Raw. Also, specific details on pitching creating ideas to Chris Jericho, The Big Show, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, the Divas, and more. Who was easy to work with? Who was unpredictable? Also, does Vince McMahon really not care about consistency with storylines? What was the story with Mike Adamle, anyway? Why didn't Colt Cabana catch on with WWE? And why doesn't Kofi Kingston get a push? Tons of significant authoritative insight into a lot of questions on fans' minds. The VIP Aftershow includes these topics: Ric Flair, TNA's Big Fat Oily Guy, Spirit Squad, Christian & Edge vs. The Hardys, building and protecting tomorrow's stars today, and Vince McMahon's seeming disregard for consistency with his big storylines. The second interview features PWTorch columnist Pat McNeill's interview with former WWE/TNA wrestler Lance Hoyt (Lance Archer) discussing a variety of topics including how he got started in TNA, being one of Andrew "Test" Martin's opponents & comparisons to Test, the Hoytamaniacs & whether he got a push in TNA because of those fans, stories from WWE and TNA runs, his thoughts on Vince Russo & Russo's thoughts on "Fire Russo" chants, TNA needing to find a direction and going with it, working with Christy Hemme in TNA, Hoyt running interference for Kelly Kelly at a WrestleMania party, the wrestling business needing new stars and fans not giving new stars a chance, whether U.S. wrestling fans would accept Japanese wrestling, working with Lord Tensai (Albert) in New Japan, whether he would have liked to have feuded with Diamond Dallas Page over the "Dallas" name, working with Ahmed Johnson in Texas, whether he will be at Slammiversary in his hometown this weekend, Whataburger vs. In-N-Out Burger, and more!
The Rewriters return from a long break to discuss the best and worst current WWE storylines, Cody Rhodes' return and his next feud, who will dethrone The Usos, and rewrite the general manager tenures of Constable Corbin (defund CC and Chann), Adam Pearce, and Mike Adamle. They also introduce a new segment called Before We Write because the boys love trivia.
Week 5 saw two teams the LA Xtreme (2-2) vs the struggling NY/NJ Hitmen (1-3) trying to keep pace with their first place rivals in each one's respective division. Midway through XFL season fans had already started tuning out in large numbers and by now Vince McMahon was so desperate for ratings that he concocted a stunt (you can see it on my channel) for the following week in which he would have a camera man entering the Orlando cheerleaders locker room at halftime. Of course we all know how it turned out. NBC actually ran an ad promoting the failed stunt. You can see it during the game between the Xtreme and the Hitmen. Jesse Ventura was getting press of his own for his bullying of Hitmen Head Coach Rusty Tillman. Obviously McMahon played that up as well by hyping the war between the two. In reality Tillman didn't care and Jesse was just covering up for his lack of skills as an announcer. Mike Adamle joined the booth at this point to provide "some" type of analysis during the game which was lacking since the league debuted. The sports media in general dismissed the league as a joke after a few weeks and no one, not even the local tv affiliates would report the outcomes of the games despite so many being close contests.
Week 2 of the XFL saw two teams the Chicago Enforcers vs LA Xtreme looking for their first victory of the season. The game went into double overtime with LA coming out on top after trailing most of the game. The live telecast was interrupted by a power outage at the Coliseum before the game started which affected NBC from showing most of the first quarter. It was still daylight on the west coast so both teams kept playing. Viewers were routed to Orlando for the Demons vs Rage contest until the power came back on in LA which was right before the 1st quarter ended. The overtime rules consisted of each team having a possession and four downs (no yardage) to get the ball into the end zone. Over 35,000 attended the LA Coliseum although some left before the end of the fourth quarter. This was also the game where in the 3rd quarter Enforcers offensive tackle Octavious Bishop broke his leg in two places. He was taken on a stretcher into an ambulance. It would be the last time he would play football. Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura were in the booth while Mike Adamle and Stephanie McMahon (yes Vince's daughter) handled on the field events. Stephanie was actually in front of a helicopter which was in the air at the time reporting that LA Xtreme backup QB Scott Milanovich's wife was days over due in giving birth. The chopper was there to take him to the nearest hospital so he wouldn't miss the birth of his child. Many will argue this was THE greatest XFL game of the ENTIRE season.
The 1989 Little League World Series championship is one that's still talked about in Williamsport more than 30 years later. It featured the prohibitive favorite from Chinese Taipei vs. the U.S champions from Trumbull, Connecticut, who were led by future NHL star and current president/GM of the New York Rangers, Chris Drury. In this episode we discuss: Chinese Taipei being an institution at the time Chris Drury being a big name in sports and how this game is still brought up today The ABC Wide World of Sports broadcast and how big of a deal it was at the time An epic Fred Savage/Wonder Years open that will resonate w/ people of a certain age Mike Adamle's in game interviews The controversy surrounding Chinese Taipei The differences in the LLWS then and now… Mike's LLWS pin collection We'll talk all these things and more, and we have the game broadcast from ABC on our website if you want to watch it for yourself.
