Who's up for some thrash metal?Megadeth is one of the founding bands of the thrash metal genre, and considered one of the "big four" of U.S. thrash metal (along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer).  The heart of the band, primary songwriter, and sole constant member of the band throughout the years is Dave Mustaine.  The formation of the band is well known as a revenge effort on Mustaine's part.  He was fired from his role as lead guitarist of Metallica just prior to the recording of their debut album due to personal issues with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and due to drug abuse problems.  The name of the group was inspired by a political pamphlet from Alan Cranston that read "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to."  Mustaine took the word out of that pamphlet and adjusted the spelling.Rust In Peace is the group's fourth studio album, released in late September but featured in November as it was gaining traction with fans at the time.  The album name came from a bumper sticker Mustaine saw that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace."  It was the first album to feature Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums.  Dave Mustaine is on guitars and lead vocals, and long time collaborator David Ellefson completes the quartet on bass and backing vocals. The album takes on a number of topics including religion, plitics, warfare, and personal issues Dave Mustaine was dealing with such as drug and alcohol addiction.  Mustaine explored a number of religious expressions over his life, and became a born again Christian after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and focusing on his Christian faith.  Lynch brings us this hallmark album of thrash metal in this week's podcast Holy Wars...the Punishment DueThe opening track starts fast, shifts to a slower acoustic bridge, and finishes at a higher speed.  The lyrics discuss religious conflict with particular attention being paid to the situations in Israel and Northern Ireland.  The subtitle "the Punishment Due" is a reference to the Marvel comic book character called the Punisher.  It was the first single released from the album  Hangar 18The second single is the second track from the album, and was inspired by the Roswell alien conspiracy theory.  Hangar 18 is supposedly located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and was believed to be the location where an alien spacecraft and/or bodies were stored.Tornado of SoulsThis is a somewhat deeper cut since it was never released as a single, but it is considered a staple of the band's discography.  Marty Friedman's guitar solo in this piece is considered one of the best metal solos of all time, and one of the hardest to play.  Bassist David Ellefson co-wrote the lyrics, making it one of the few songs on the album not written by Mustane alone.Rust in Peace...PolarisThe concluding song reflects the album title.  It is written from the perspective of a Polaris nuclear weapon, and reflects the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars (from the motion picture “Misery”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Full Circle by the Jeff Healey BandRob starts the staff pick with this blues-infused pick which is the lead track to the Jeff Healey Band's second album, "Hell to Pay."  Bobby Whitlock, a member of the supergroup Derek and the Dominos is playing the Hammond organ on this piece.  Jeff Healey, blind since an early age, was known for holding his guitar in his lap while playing.Vigilante Man by Hindu Love GodsWayne's staff pick is a bit of a super group.  Warren Zevon got together with the members of REM minus Michael Stipe to create this single album on a lark.  The group recorded old standards for the album, and this one was originally done by Woody Guthrie in 1940.  The song itslef is about hired thugs who would chase away migrants trying to escape the Dust Bowl by moving to California.Traveling Riverside Blues by Led ZeppelinBruce features another cover song, this one written by Robert Johnson in 1937.  Led Zeppelin recorded it in 1969, but it was not released until 1990, over ten years after "Fool in the Rain," their last single.  It hit number 7 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart in November 1990.Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon JoviLynch finishes the staff picks with a rock ballad containing elements of country and western, written for the motion picture "Young Guns II."  It won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of Bon Jovi's most successful solo hits. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" by the Royal Scots Dragoon GuardsThis cinematic piece accompanied the Kevin Costner Western which was out in 1990. Today marks the third visit of legendary Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame drummer DOUG "COSMO" CLIFFORD - a.k.a. founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival - to my show. At the tender age of seventy-seven, Doug stills practices and sharpens his drum chops, even if his Parkinson's condition limits his travels and actions. However, he has reached once more into his musical vault and prepared another newly remastered treasure for our enjoyment. This third project is a new album called 'CALIFORNIA GOLD' and it features the vocal talents of musician BOBBY WHITLOCK (famous for his keyboard work with Derek and the Dominoes.) This record was created in 1978, which is eight years before his last two restored albums MAGIC WINDOW and FOR ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD. I let Mr. Clifford know how much I enjoyed this latest collection, so Doug and I went over some of my favorite tracks and talked about the making of this golden effort. Together, we discussed Doug and Bobby's process of collaboration and songwriting, and I was happy to get a repeat story about Cosmo's buddy Steve Miller in the process! The episode wouldn't be complete without an inspirational moment from Cosmo, and he delivered something pretty special. Please enjoy the show and check out the great tunes from Doug and Bobby. They have set a new Gold standard. Thank you once more, Cosmo! [originally recorded 09-26-22]https://dougcosmoclifford.com/ http://strongwriter.com/

Bobby discusses his own solo career, plus working with legends like Delaney & Bonnie, Steve Winwood, Duane Allman, "Duck" Dunne, and many more. Today Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is considered Eric Clapton's best work.  However, at the time that this double album debut by Derek and the Dominos came out it was considered both a commercial and critical failure.  Clapton met fellow Derek and the Dominos band members Bobby Whitlock (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums) when working with Delaney & Bonnie.  Whitlock and Clapton got together at Clapton's house and composed most of what would become the original songs on the Layla album. The name Derek and the Dominos was chosen by Eric Clapton because he was tired of the supergroup approach to music and did not want his fame to overshadow the band.  Derek and the Dominos played a lot of small clubs in England in August, then went to Miami to record the studio album. The group met up with Duane Allman in Miami, and Allman and Clapton struck up a close friendship from the start.  Allman would record on 11 of the 14 songs on the album. Most know that the song Layla was inspired by Clapton's infatuation with Pattie Boyd Harrison, George Harrison's wife.  In truth, many of the songs on the Layla album were performed with Pattie Boyd in mind.Unfortunately this double album is the only record these musicians would make together.  Clapton would struggle with drug addiction and depression for several years afterward, and Allman would die in a tragic accident in 1971.  The reputation of this album would grow over time, however, and is iconic today. Bell Bottom BluesThis song was the first single, and was written by Clapton and Whitlock.  The inspiration for the song was that Pattie Boyd had asked Clapton to get her a pair of bell-bottom blue jeans while he was in the United States.  It's Too LateThe album contains five covers including this blues song originally benned by Chuck Willis in 1956.  Clapton and Whitlock trade off on vocals, and guitar work is from Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.  The song would be performed on Derek and the Dominos' only TV appearance, on the Johnny Cash Show in January 1971.Why Does Love Got to Be So SadYou can hear a terrific jam between Clapton and Allman on guitar in this song.  It swings from A minor on the verses to D major on the chorus.  Whitlock and Clapton trade off vocal work.LaylaThis signature track was inspired by a 12th century tale called “The Story of Layla and Majnun.”  It is about a young man who falls hopelessly in love with a young girl only to be rebuffed by her father because of his obsession with her.  Clapton of course identified with the story of hopeless love because of his feelings toward Pattie Boyd Harrison. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Goodies”This offbeat comedy series premiered in the UK in this month. STAFF PICKS:Share the Land by the Guess WhoBrian starts off the staff picks with the title track from the Guess Who's seventh studio album, and the first after the departure of guitarist Randy Bachman.  The lyrics reflect the growing popularity of the environmental movement.  Burton Cummings wrote this song and sings lead.Cherryhill Park by Billy Joe RoyalWayne brings us a story song about a young girl named Mary Hill who “was a thrill after dark in Cherryhill Park.”  The thrills end when Mary Hill marries a rich man.  Billy Joe Royal was born in Valdosta, Georgia.Montego Bay by Bobby BloomRob finds an early reggae-influenced rock song.  Bobby Bloom and Jeff Berry wrote this one-hit wonder.  It made it to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Sadly, Bobby Bloom died in 1974 at the age of 28.Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed by 100 Proof (Aged in Soul)Bruce's staff pick comes from the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier Holland after they left Motown Records to set up a separate label.  This song about discovering evidence of infidelity went to number 8 on the US pop charts, and was 100 Proof's biggest hit INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Overture by the WhoIn the tradition of symphonic music, the Who began their rock opera Tommy with this overture.

Elvis Presley famously bought his clothes from the Lasky Brothers Clothing Store on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Today, the store is owned and operated by Hal Lansky the son and nephew of the original owners. As you will hear, from Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash, who became the 'Man in Black' after shopping at Lansky's, to Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, and the Sex Pistols, the tale of Lansky's is packed with music legends and lore. After shopping with, 'My Pal Hal,' I was able to meet Bobby Whitlock (Derek & the Dominoes, Bonnie & Delaney, George Harrison) and secure a comprehensive interview with both Hal Lansky and Bobby Whitlock. (Whitlock's interview is already posted on this site).

She's been making music for more than 60 years - recording every year or 18 months since the mid 60's. This week 82 year old JUDY COLLINS is celebrating the release of her 51st album. It's called “Spellbound” for good reason and it's the first of hers with all original material. I caught up with Judy at her home in New York. The OZARK MOUNTAIN DAREDEVILS don't really belong in the one hit wonder category because they actually had two massive hits. They guys formed their country rock band in 1972 and after 6 albums, still occasionally play together. We meet bassist MICHAEL 'SUPE' GRANDA. In the segment that's all about you, a listener has asked me to find one of his favourite artists who used to play with ERIC CLAPTON'S Derek and the Dominoes. I tracked down BOBBY WHITLOCK and the chat we have is simply awesome. If you'd like me to track someone down for an interview… just send me a message through my website www.abreathoffreshair.com.au Join us! "A Breath Of Fresh Air" with Sandy Kaye.

In 2017 I was able to attend a homecoming show for Bobby Whitlock. A Memphis native, Whitlock's initial foray into fame included playing a pivotal role in a band popular among musicians, Delaney & Bonnie. Whitlock had played with several local Stax Recording artists including Sam & Dave, Albert King, The Staple Singers, and Booker T & the MGs. He joined Delaney and Bonnie in 1968. While a member of this highly touted band, Whitlock met and played with what would become Derek & the Dominos including Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, and Eric Clapton.  He also met and played with key musicians who would go on to significant roles including Bobby Keys (childhood neighbor of Buddy Holly and long-time sax player in the Rolling Stones) and Jim Price. In 1970 Whitlock recorded several tracks with George Harrison for his All Things Must Pass album. He also played with John Lennon, Apple Recording artist Doris Troy, and toured the album for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Eventually, Whitlock, Gordon, Clapton, and Radle would form the band Derek and the Dominos (1970 - 1971) considered by many to be Clapton's finest 'band' ensemble. Working with Tom Dowd, Whitlock would get co-writing credits on nine tracks for the band's landmark album, Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs: Clapton's homage to then George Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd (whom Harrison met while filming A Hard Days Night with the Beatles). Interview with Bobby Whitlock (Derek & the Dominos feat Eric Clapton)1. Bobby Whitlock was born in Arkansas but spent his teen years living in Millington and hanging out at some Memphis recording studios. In fact, he found himself in the Stax studio where Sam and Dave were recording “I Thank You.” You can hear Bobby supplying some of the handclaps on that record. Bobby went on to be the first white artist to be signed by Stax’s Hip imprint label. Bobby is a keyboard player, that is his instrument, but he was persuaded to play piano for the first time on a studio recording during the sessions for George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness.” Early in the All Things Must Pass sessions, Clapton, and Whitlock, along with bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, formed the blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos. Whitlock wrote or co-wrote seven of the album’s fourteen songs, including “Tell the Truth”, “Bell Bottom Blues,” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad.” Two of the songs co-written by Clapton and Whitlock also feature Bobby on lead vocals, “Keep on Growing” and “Thorn Tree in the Garden.” On the other tracks, he and Clapton shared the singing. Now, Bobby has taken up painting, and he’s good at it. En realidad, se querían llamar Derek And The Dynamics. Escuchar audio

"In Concert" is the first and only original live concert album from the band Derek & The Dominos. While the band only lasted a year, their impact on blues-rock, and hard-rock are immeasurable; and, for many people the band marks a high point in Eric Clapton's career. Clapton, along with Bobby Whitlock (keys, vocals), Carl Radle (bass), and Jim Gordon (drums) deliver a double-LP that fully immerse the listener in the concert experience from those two nights in New York City, October 1970. For me, this record represents one of the peaks in the evolution of blues music, which in its best form is always consumed live.

Beware of Darkness was written by George Harrison and originally released on his 1970 solo album All Things Must Pass. The melody of "Beware of Darkness" is complex and original. The melody of the verses incorporates a pedal point on the key of G major and moves to G sharp minor, an unusal progression, very much the essence of "Harrisongs". The nearly chromatic melody of the verses contrasts with a more standard rock melody in the middle eight. Musicians on the song include Harrison, Eric Clapton and Dave Mason on guitar, Carl Radle on bass guitar, Bobby Whitlock on piano, Gary Wright on organ and Ringo Starr on drums. With such a chord progression, and personnel to match, who needs vocals ? Not BDJ, who remixed the (almost) isolated instrumenrts into this new remix.
