Tonight's Jazz Feature honors the Birthday Anniversary of one of America's most important artists. Edward Kennedy Ellington was born on April 29, 1899 in Washington D.C.and he passed away in New York on May 24, 1974 at age 75 from cancer. Tonight The Jazz Show presents one of Ellington's latter day masterpieces, "The Far East Suite". It commemorates a US State Department tour the band took in late 1963 to the Middle east, India and Japan. The music was written by Ellington and his partner Billy Strayhorn and recorded in late 1966. The band is at it's best and the prominent soloists are alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton, Ellington himself on piano and baritone saxophonist Harry Carney and trumpeters Cootie Williams and Cat Anderson. The bassist is John Lamb and the drummer is the great Rufus Jones. Enjoy this classic and marvel at how contemporary this music sounds today.
Chapter two, "Blessed Community" by Rufus Jones, focuses on the common purpose and responsibility of the individual in a community. This season, I'm exploring the book "Called to Community," edited by Charles E. Moore. Throughout this year-long study, I will work through what it means to live intentionally with others. The book covers a wide range of topics, authors, and ideas. For each episode, I start by reading the chapter, giving my opinion on the reflective questions provided, scripture reading, and concluding with an actionable next step to take. Mark 13:28-31 includes the parable of the fig tree. To the ancient Israelites, the fig tree could also be understood as a symbol for the nation of Israel. In ancient Hebrew, the expression “heaven and earth will pass away” was understood to mean that everything in the entire Universe would be gone. However, the plural form, “heavens” refers to the place Heaven. Often, early Friends saw the events in the book of Revelation as events to be interpreted as of spiritual importance to the individual. However, the eschatological events in the Gospels were usually seen as events to happen in actual history. The section in Mark 13:32-37 tended to be usually interpreted by Friends as the need for each individual to be spiritually ready for one's physical death. However, Mark 13:32 could also be sometimes interpreted among Friends in the personal sense: No one knows the time when the Lord will suddenly make Himself spiritually known to an individual or a group (such as in corporate worship). The Greek term basileia often had a sense of almost being a kingdom-nation, or a Nation-State. The Shakers (who in 1747 grew out of Quakers) from their outset adopted almost wholesale the Quaker eschatological language and views as applying to the spiritual coming of Christ to an individual. Early Friends were not afraid to allow for the possibility of the complete presence of God to be known by an individual on this side of heaven. Mark 14: 1-11 explores the woman who anointed Jesus with very expensive perfume in the home of Simon the Leper. The word “leprosy” was used to designate the then incurable disease that we now know today is only mildly contagious. However, “leprosy” could also be used for any skin disease. The word “Judas” is the same name as “Judah”. The name Judas Iscariot in the New Testament means a man named Judas from the town of Cariot. Part 2 of our fascinating interview with the creator, writer and star of Channel 4's hit series Home about how the show came about and how they found their star. Plus BAFTA Rocliffe script tips, Comedy Crowd comes clean and life without Edinburgh.
Actor Rufus Jones (writer and co-star of Channel 4’s Home) has hardly answered the BobPhone before he confesses that, despite his Cambridge English degree, “Dylan still scares the hell out of me”. But he’s relieved that “Bob’s entering a 'jolly grandpa' phase. He seems less concerned with preserving the myth”. Rufus references Beyoncé, the Eagles (“the story of the Eagles is better than the sound of the Eagles”), T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Hieronymus Bosch and Christopher Ricks before moving on, via Desolation Row, to the enigma that is Murder Most Foul (“it reads like bad poetry but sings like good poetry”). In an episode recorded before the release of Rough And Rowdy Ways, theories are promulgated, lines dissected and numerology explored. Murder Most Foul is “a confounding song. He takes a piece of real life and spins it into something abstract and horrific.” Join us for a dark but enlightening day in Dallas. Rufus Jones began his career as part of the sketch comedy group Dutch Elm Conservatoire. In the West End, he appeared in the hit comedy Dead Funny. His acclaimed TV series Home was nominated for a BAFTA. Other television work includes three series as David Wilkes in W1A, Four Lives, Flack, Loaded, Stag, Fresh Meat, Trying Again, The Casual Vacancy, Bob Servant, Hunderby and Holy Flying Circus (as Terry Jones). Charles Dean Dixon, conductor, was born January 10, 1915 in New York, New York to West Indian parents Henry Charles Dixon and McClara Rolston Dixon. Dixon’s parents exposed him to classical music at an early age and his mother taught him to play the violin, along with a number of other instruments. By the age of nine he was considered a musical prodigy and performed on local radio stations in New York. Dixon enrolled at Juilliard School of Music in 1932 as a violin major, but soon switched to the music pedagogy program and graduated in 1936. He then enrolled in Columbia University and earned a Master’s Degree in Music Pedagogy there in 1939. While at Julliard Dixon discovered conducting and upon graduating he formed the “Dean Dixon Symphony Orchestra,” the first racially integrated group of its type in New York City. Dixon finally returned to the United States in 1970 after his hugely successful career in Europe and Australia.

Episode 3! Can we really be at episode 3 already? You're in for a treat, because it's screenwriter Sarah Phelps (The Pale Horse, Dublin Murders, And Then There Were None). Sarah was an utter joy and blisteringly funny. I spent an hour in her company over FaceTime and it wasn't enough. I want to hear her opinions on EVERYTHING! We chat on everything from 5G conspiracy theorists and the US President to social media challenges, neuroscience and mediation, this conversation went to some brilliant places. We talk honestly about tackling creativity during this time along with her TV and book recommendations. We chat about the ending to The Pale Horse and the people who have given her unsolicited feedback, plus why Agatha Christie's happy endings need closer inspection. EastEnders fans will also love her words about her time on the show. This is a superb episode and I love Sarah for being so candid in it.The kind words about the podcast have continued to get back to me – it seems after episode 2 that Rufus Jones is the mate everyone would like to go for a beer with (after we're allowed back in pubs). We're back! It's EPISODE 2 of the QuaranTea Break podcast. Today, it's actor and writer Rufus Jones (Home, Camping, W1A) calling in for a chat. I've been a huge fan of his hit Channel 4 comedy Home since the start – it's the show I probably recommend most often to people when they ask for a telly suggestion, so it was great to get the chance to gas on about it with its creator. We talk about the show in a lot of detail (including *that Brexit scene* in series 2) – plus find out what's the latest with series 3 and some potential plot strands related to the current world situation. Rufus is such an easy-going guy, and we chat about what he's been doing and watching (at this point, I hadn't seen Unorthodox!) while we've all been staying indoors. Both series of Home are available on All 4 now, and I'd highly recommend them. The reaction for episode 1 with Robert Webb last week truly blew me away, so thank you to everyone who listened and shared the podcast. Please keep yelling about it (in a socially distant way) and give me a review and rating if you enjoyed what you heard.
