Join host Mary Crafts as she embarks on an enlightening conversation with Dr. Tracey Shors, an esteemed neuroscientist from Rutgers University, as they delve into the intricacies of the human brain and explore innovative ways to craft a meaningful life. Mary shares her personal reflections on pursuing a life with no regrets and discusses Dr. Shors's captivating journey and significant contributions to neuroscience, specifically in how the brain processes trauma and stress. In this episode, Dr. Shors unpacks her extensive research findings, revealing her development of a unique methodology known as "MAP" or "Mental and Physical" training. This method combines meditation and aerobic exercise to foster cognitive harmony and resilience against stress. With a focus on reducing rumination, Dr. Shors explains the importance of synchronizing brain activity through learning and physical exertion, offering listeners practical insights to improve mental health and overall well-being. Discover the science behind the brain's ability to generate new neurons and how we can leverage this knowledge to live fuller, more intentional lives. About the Guest(s): Dr. Tracey Shors is a renowned neuroscientist recognized for her extensive research on the brain, with a significant focus on neural plasticity and trauma recovery. Dr. Shors has dedicated over 20 years as a professor at Rutgers University where she has made groundbreaking contributions to understanding the relationship between psychology, biology, and neuroscience, particularly in the context of behavioral neuroscience. Her pioneering approach integrates meditation and physical activity to aid individuals in overcoming trauma and enhancing cognitive function. Key Takeaways: The combination of meditation and aerobic exercise provides a synchronized approach to overcoming trauma and reducing negative rumination. Rumination can detract from being present in the moment, but strategic mental and physical exercises can help in gaining control over these intrusive thoughts. Meditation focuses particularly on being present and trained awareness, which helps in recognizing one's thought patterns and bringing about mental clarity. The MAP training approach devised by Dr. Shors encourages cognitive development through learning and preserving new brain cells stimulated by physical activity. Engaging in challenging, new activities helps keep the mind agile and perpetuates neurosynaptic growth and integrity, especially later in life. In this episode of Fishing Without Bait, host Jim Ellermeyer and co-host Mike explore the difference between spirituality and organized religion and what it truly means to nurture your spirit. Together, they revisit the timeless teachings of Jesus, focusing on his central message of love, compassion, and self-discovery — a message that's often been overshadowed by societal control, rigid traditions, and centuries of interpretation. We'll discuss: • Why spirituality is about personal connection rather than institutional rules. • The two greatest commandments Jesus taught and why they free us from fear. • Insights from alternative gospels like Thomas and Mary Magdalene that emphasize the divine spark within. • How to embrace mindfulness, self-validation, and inner freedom in your daily life. Jim challenges us to see the divine within ourselves and others, and to choose kindness, forgiveness, and mindful living as a way of nurturing that spark.

Text me your feedback. In order to be an open-hearted, compassionate person, we first have to notice the things things that need our support. This is where mindfulness — the practice of presence — comes in. It teaches how to engage directly with what's real, rather than what we wish were true. This month we're back to mindfulness basics with a guided practice that starts with concentration practice (samata) and then follows with insight (vipassana). The practice starts right away (no intro) and includes periods of silence (nothing wrong with your player). ~ ~ ~SMP welcomes your comments and questions at feedback@skillfulmeanspodcast.com. To be honest, I am feeling overwhelmed. On the outside, I am discouraged by endless news of our warmongering and dysfunctioning government. On the inside, I am still processing the years of intense social isolation during the pandemic, with no work prospects, after a vibrant pre-pandemic career and social life. I am hyper-vigilant and jumpy. Creatively, I feel uninspired. I find it difficult and awkward to socialize, sleep, or even rest. During periods of overwhelm, the best thing I can do for myself is to let my parasympathetic nervous system take over. This is the part of our nervous systems responsible for our 'rest and reset'. In today's meditation, we calm our nervous system. This podcast is made possible with great thanks to our subscribers on Patreon. Join our community at Patreon (dot) com (slash) theMeditationPodcast
