What's a matriarchy? Documentarian Izzy Chan puts us up on game about what matriarchies actually are and what they're like, and reveals surprising facts about women-led societies.Remoy takes the mic this week to explore this system that is often viewed as a patriarchy with women in charge. Matriarchy, however, is far from that. Remoy makes the important note, which bears repeating, that most sources used to write this episode have the same patriarchal lens that we are trying to unMASK. We must always bear this in mind.Izzy talks us through the buzz words that describe women-led societies—what's matrilineal versus matrilocal versus matriarchal? Listen to find out!But there's a reason why Izzy only uses one of these terms, though. She shares her experience creating her documentary Matriarch and the feedback she's gotten.Izzy dispels the one-to-one comparison between patriarchy and matriarchy using facts from the societies she's exploring in Matriarch. What role do men play in a matriarchy?Izzy fascinates Remoy and Samantha with the way men leaders (and husbands) are picked in the matriarchies she's documenting.Roles were respected in a different way in matriarchies, a way that didn't require oppression or exploitation. So much to learn from this system…Why don't we hear that much about matriarchies? Besides separate efforts to undermine their existence and legitimacy, many of them have been overtaken by patriarchal settlers.Remoy talks us through a couple matriarchies from different corners of the world.First the Bijagos. Folks living in the Guinea Bissau archipelago were a matriarchy run by clan mothers. But this wasn't just patriarchy with women at the top. Listen to find out how the Bijagos ran their community. Then he comes to the Western hemisphere to present the Haudenosaunee, an indigenous group based in what is now Canada. Also a matriarchal and matrilineal community with mixed leadership, the Haudenosaunee is a longstanding group with community as one of its core values. Is it true that in some societies, women propose to men? Get ready to hear more excitement from Remoy than you've heard all year. Izzy paints a picture of the matriarchies and what it looks like to include all genders in leadership. She makes an important point about gender roles in matriarchies, which she credits to her advisor on Matriarch, a member of the Haudenosaunee tribe. Why are there so many matriarchies that no longer exist? Look no further than Western settler culture and colonialism. Guess how they proceeded?Quiz yourself on matriarchies with all the buzz words we give you this episode!HoyanehOrebokClan motherDatukRemoy gets just five questions to ask Izzy about matriarchy and gender. Izzy shines more light on one of patriarchy's running theme: control. Is it still a problem in matriarchy? In a conversation around inner light as well as darkness, it's so easy to substitute light and dark for good/bad, or positive/negative. And I have. For the longest time. But I am reclaiming my darkness, waking my inner bitch up; wanting, needing, a bit less of the goodie-two-shoes facet of myself, and a bit more edge, more anger, more holy wrath. ‘Nobody is all good. Nobody is all bad. We are a mix. The yin and the yang is present in all of us. So how do I use that [mix of lightness and darkness] in such a way that I'm not an absolute and complete total dickhead?' ~ Helena And even though I truly feel the need to allow my inner darkness more room, more space, more freedom, still, there's a fear of becoming that dickhead, and that, I know I don't want to be. – Helena, I don't think you have it in you to be a dickhead. – Oh, you're wrong, Özlem. I definitely have it in me to be a dickhead! – It would be so interesting to see that side of you… – Yeah, well, I'm not sure I will go so far as to let my inner dickhead out, in public… I know I can be a dickhead. And I wonder… are there any individuals alive who don't? Perhaps… very young children don't? But then again, perhaps the dickhead-aspect relies on cognition? Or maybe not… Hm. So many thoughts, questions popping, with responses arising within me that don't feel complete. What a treat! It tells me I am on to something unfinished, where I'm not yet ‘fixed'. I haven't settled, made up my mind, come to any definitive conclusion. And I like that! ‘I think you need a little bit darkness to understand things, underlying motivators and the reasoning behind. Like in fairy tales, where you always have the darkness against the lightness. But I think you onto something: How can you make them coexist and help rather than fight each other?' ~ Özlem Özlem and me kept dancing around light and dark, doing and being, and how we show up in the world in this our fifth and final conversation, but we've yet to actually get that impro-thing going, so who knows, perhaps there will be a surprise sometimes in the future?

One of the most contentious issues of our culture is about differences between the sexes. From a higher perspective this isn't even an issue, but at the level of the physical world, I think there is a point in giving the matter a thought or two. My take on this focuses on sexuality, where there seems to be at least some variation that is corroborated by science. Sex drive per se is not stronger in any of the sexes, but my conclusion is that there are two overarching differences in the way sexuality expresses itself. If these are not understood, we may never overcome some unnecessary misunderstandings between men and women. A fascinating look into one of the few remaining matriarchies, the Mosuo in southwestern China, also gives us some clues as to what we probably ought to understand better. The Mosuo community in China’s Himalayan foothills is matrilineal, so a family’s ‘bloodline’, inheritance and power is passed down through the female side. There is no such thing as marriage and monogamy is actively discouraged. The women rule and the men don’t mind. Rebecca Kesby has been speaking to Choo Wai Hong, a Singaporean corporate lawyer who came across the community as she travelled through her ancestral homeland of China. She liked it so much she learnt the language and built a house there. (PHOTO: Mosuo Women. Credit Patrick AVENTURIER/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images)

Tonsättarna Xinyan Li och Zhou Long föddes båda i Kina. Zhou Long började tidigt spela piano. En barnkör sjunger a capella i operan. Spellista: I Love New York              Madonna   Madame White Snake Zhou Long Liveinspening, Boston, USA   Mountain Sacrifice No. 2 Xinyan Li American Composers Orchestra Liveinspelning, USA   Mo Suo's Burial Ceremony For Woodwind Quintet Xinyan Li Yating Yu m fl                   Liveinspelning, USA   King Chu Xinyan Li UMKC Orchestra. Recently, I convinced McConnell to read Sex at Dawn which is a book that I found so interesting because they really interpret a lot of things very differently from the conventional view. What's life like when women are in charge? Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women who've formed close ties with matriarchal communities in China and India, and who've gone onto document their experiences. Choo Waihong is a former high-flying lawyer from Singapore who quit her job to move to a remote part of China to live with the Mosuo tribe. This is one of the last matrilineal and matriarchal societies on earth. That means that the family descends from the female bloodline, and that women also hold the ultimate power in the community. Waihong ended up building a house among the Mosuo, and has written a book about her experiences called 'Kingdom of Women.' Karolin Klüppel is a German photographer who travelled to the remote north-east of India to get to know the Khasi people, who live in families where women inherit property, and children take the mother's name. Karolin was struck by the self-confidence of the young girls, and she set about making portraits of the children, which form part of her photo series, 'Mädchenland' or 'Kingdom of Girls.' This week: the mother reigns supreme. Kingdom of Women by Erin O'Dwyer with Timothy Nicastri (360documentaries, ABC, 2013) In remote village in the Yunnan province of China exists one of the only matriarchal cultures in the world. In fact, there isn't even a word in the Mosuo language for 'husband' or 'father.' Children are raised by their mother's brother and all of the property stays in her name. Women entertain as many lovers as they wish, who visit under the cloak of darkness and leave before dawn. The Hidden World of Traveller Girls by The Kitchen Sisters, Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva (Morning Edition, NPR, 2010) "Travellers" are sometimes thought of as the gypsies of Ireland. The girls marry young and have large families. By the time they’re well established, so is their authority in the community. Re:sound is produced by Katie Mingle.
