About a decade ago, Anjulie had huge success writing catchy pop songs that were all over Canadian radio and MuchMusic. She won a Juno Award, she was writing songs for the likes of Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson, and there was a bidding war between some of the biggest labels in the world who were desperate to sign her. But then, at the height of her success, Anjulie walked away from her music career to focus on healing some internal wounds she'd been avoiding. Now, she's re-emerged as a more centered version of herself — and with that comes a new sound and a hit single. Anjulie sits down with Tom Power to share her story. If you like this conversation, take a listen to Tom's chat with pop singer JoJo on her experience as a child star.

For a time in the ‘90s, there was no band on earth bigger than Bush. Their debut album, “Sixteen Stone,” had singles that were in heavy rotation on MuchMusic, MTV and every rock radio station. That record also turned singer Gavin Rossdale into a star. Ahead of Bush's cross-Canada tour this spring, Gavin joins Tom Power to look back on the band's early days, what it was like breaking out of Britain when they didn't sound like any other Britpop band of the time, and what goes through his mind when he hears “Glycerine.”

2024 marked the 40th anniversary of MuchMusic – which, for our non-Canadian listeners, was essentially Canada’s version of MTV. And while MTV had a profound impact on the music industry, MuchMusic arguably had a massive impact on Canadian culture. So, we’re going to spend a bit of time talking about MuchMusic – and since Christopher is the original Much veejay, it’s kind of a no brainer. In fact, most of Tom’s “in-depth” research for this episode came from Christopher’s excellent book, “Is This Live: Inside The Wild Early Years of MuchMusic, The Nation’s Music Station”. So in other words, Christopher did ALL of the heavy lifting for this episode! To help us tell the Much story is one of our favourite people – and a MuchMusic veejay from the early years – Laurie Brown! Laurie explains about the freedom accorded to her and the other veejays in creating compelling content (while staying within the confines of a miniscule budget) and the camaraderie of the Much family. Other highlights: - Laurie talks about interviewing music legends like David Bowie - Christopher tells a story about an unknown big-haired band that made their first Canadian TV appearance on his show City Limits. That band was Bon Jovi. - Audio from Duran Duran, who couldn’t believe their luck as they flew to exotic locations to film the videos for the Rio album. - We’ll talk to one British band that looked back on some of the early videos… and cringed! - Laurie and Christopher discuss dealing with the absolute mayhem of the legendary and chaotic “Intimate & Interactive” interviews. - Peter Gabriel and David Bowie, who themselves released game-changing videos, discuss the promise of music videos as an art form. - Former MUCH veejay Bill Welychka talks about the responsibility and pressure of interviewing major artists – especially to the fans of those artists. - Christopher & Laurie explain why they had to stop playing the most popular video on the station. - We discuss how MUCH provided the connective tissue between Canadians, their culture, and the musicians that benefitted from exposure on MuchMusic. All in all, it’s a MUCH-needed deep dive into the early days of The Nation’s Music Station! Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.

We at The Wolf love hard rock, heavy metal, prog rock, classic rock and 80s MTV. While Bryan Adams may match a couple of those categories, we can't say that he was one of our very favorites. Because we were bombarded with him from 1983-86 on US radio and MTV and because girls seemed to like him (maybe his music too), he just didn't do it for us. However, his 5th album released in 1984, Reckless, boasts hit after hit like Heaven, Summer of '69, Run To You, Somebody, and It's Only Love. So as it turns 40 on November 5, we thought it would be a good idea to bring in friend to the show and Canadian rock guru Chris from My Rock N Roll Heaven to give us his perspective. 1984 not only saw the release of Reckless but the launch of Canadian MTV-type station Much Music which not only played videos but had to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists. That helped propel the album to become the first diamond selling album (1,000,000 in sales for Canada) in Canada by a Canadian artist. Aided in the songwriting by Jim Vallance and backed up on guitar by long time collaborator Keith Scott, Bryan had huge success in his home country, in the US and around the globe. The videos all had a theme and featured the same actor (Lysette Anthony) which helped create an image for Adams in the US. We go track x track and enlist Chris's Canadian perspective to see why this album was so popular and how it stands the test of time. CHUM-FM producer, Famous Lost Words podcast host and friend of the show Tom Jokic makes his return to NSTS this week with a brand new angle. Tom does a segment on his podcast called "When Rock Stars Attack", a hilarious take on snippy-ish musician interviews found in the CHUM-FM and MuchMusic archives. Today he graciously shares some of these clips with us, featuring Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, Jann Arden, April Wine's Myles Goodwyn, and a Beatles skirmish involving George Harrison and Paul McCartney. Lots of laughs and great conversation.
In this special episode, Sook-Yin Lee, the iconic radio and TV broadcaster, musician, film director, actress, and trailblazing MuchMusic veejay, and Chester Brown, the acclaimed alternative cartoonist, swing by the YVR Screen Scene Podcast studio to talk about Paying For It. The feature film – which had its premiere in Toronto and screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival – is a live-action adaptation of Chester's best-selling graphic novel that was inspired by the end of his relationship with Sook-Yin (who, in the film, is represented by a character named Sonny who works as a veejay at MaxMusic). Here's the premise for both the book and the film: In the late 90s, Chester and Sonny are a long-term, committed, romantic couple. When Sonny wants to redefine their relationship, Chester, an introverted cartoonist, starts sleeping with sex workers and, in the process, discovers a new kind of intimacy. “Paying For It: a comic strip memoir about being a john” was adapted for the screen by Sook-Yin and Joanne Sarazen; the film was directed by Sook-Yin and stars Dan Beirne as Chester and Emily Le as Sonny. In this riveting interview, Sook-Yin and Chester speak candidly about their journey to bring this story to the screen, art as activism, and if Canadians are ready to talk about sex work as work.Episode sponsor: Fish Flight Entertainment

CHRIS BOOKER BIOChris Booker was born and raised in West Virginia and got his big start in radio in 1989 while attending West Liberty University in Wheeling, West Virginia. In 1992, he began his self-described "gypsy years radio tour," where he held the positions of on-air personality and music director at a number of different stations as both Chris Booker and Booker Madison in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Florence, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh. In 1996, he landed the evening slot at 92.3 K-Rock in New York City, where he met the nation's top radio talk show host, Howard Stern, who made the young DJ a regular on his program. He made numerous appearances on Howard Stern's show under the name "Booger." Booker left K-Rock in 2003 for the morning drive show on the "Blink" version of WNEW. When that format failed and the show was taken off the air, Booker then worked at Sirius Satellite Radio as morning host for Octane Radio. Booker was then hired at New York Top forty (WHTZ) "Z100" as a fill-in host. Booker eventually found his way back to K-Rock in 2005, where his show aired in the afternoon until the format was changed to "Free FM" talk. His producer and on-air collaborator at the time was Al Dukes. On January 3, 2006, Booker's "new" radio show (carrying over many of the same elements and players as his afternoon drive rock show) titled The Booker Show debuted from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The show aired on Monday-Thursday, and 7-10 p.m. on Fridays at WFNY-FM (92.3 Free-FM).On May 23, 2008, Booker was fired as the morning show host on "Q102" in Philly (but was still considered an employee of "Q102", due to contractual reasons).Booker has worked as a correspondent for TV Guide Channel covering red carpet events. From 2000 to 2003, Booker was a full-time VJ for MTV and MTV2, hosting such shows as The Return of the Rock, First Listen with Britney Spears, and was the final host for the now defunct series 120 Minutes. From 2003 to 2004, Booker was the New York correspondent for Entertainment Tonight.Since July 2015, Chris Booker and Perez Hilton have hosted a weekly podcast named The Perez Hilton Podcast with Chris Booker According to Billboard, the two met on Amp Radio where Booker hosted "Morning Show on L.A. In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy crown Sum 41's 2001 album All Killer No Filler a Canadian musical landmark. That's like a Canadian Heritage Minute, but it just plays every commercial break on Much Loud for eternity. Maybe a statue in Ajax, too. Find out more about how Sum 41 broke through outside of just the Canadian pop-punk scene to become emblematic of early-2000s culture, why their early work stands out even better in retrospect, and their unlikely turn to political nu-metal on this week's podcast.Sick of hearing all the ads? Clare Belford (comedian) returns to the show on the last of our pre-tapes before Dan gets back from Japan, and it's a fun one, as Clare blocks any "sexy chat" spam DM she gets invited into but notices one commonality...a fellow comedian showing up in these chats, and subsequently following some of these women. We don't reveal who it is, but you can maybe guess! No guessing about this episode being fun though, as Clare tells us about her new dog (who snores adorably throughout), and we discuss The Leftovers, Clare's dad's dog obedience tips, falling asleep at comedy shows, and our friend DBJ trapped themself in a box. Plus, Clare gets a confusing tax slip, a man gets caught in a court proceeding, and Twiggy owns an interviewer. If you want something to do that's a lot less confusing than your taxes, head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where a simple $5 donation gets you access to our entire back catalogue and THREE brand-new bonus episodes a month. Last week, Sequoia Holmes returned to the show for a Canadian Education episode, as we watched the MuchMusic staple "intimate & interactive" with Canadian legends Our Lady Peace. We also have ad-free episodes, an exclusive Discord, and more, so check it out! Clare Belford is a comedian who will be at Edmonton's Grindstone Comedy Festival in a couple of weeks from July 3-7.
