Welcome to Episode 97! This episode feels a little different—no Cubs player has ever worn #97, but instead of finding a stat or milestone to mark the moment, I'm dedicating this one to Ryne Sandberg, a Cubs legend who shaped my love for the game. I reflect on his legacy, his influence on my childhood, and why we're all rooting for him as he battles cancer. Ryno, this one's for you. This week, the MLB Winter Meetings gave us plenty to talk about. Here's what I cover in this episode: Cubs Trade and Free-Agent Rumors: The stove is heating up! I dive into the latest on Seiya Suzuki, Nico Hoerner, and Cody Bellinger, plus why the Cubs might make some surprising moves. The Kyle Tucker Buzz: Could the Cubs pull off a blockbuster trade for Kyle Tucker? I unpack the rumors, what it might take, and why he could be the game-changing bat the Cubs need. Roster Moves and Rule 5 Draft: From the addition of Gage Workman to the Rule 5 Draft picks and Carson Kelly rumors, I share my thoughts on how these moves could shape the 2024 Cubs roster. What's Next: It's clear the Cubs aren't done. From starting pitching to bullpen depth and another big bat (or two), I lay out what the team needs to address before Opening Day. This offseason feels like a turning point for the Cubs, and I can't wait to see how it unfolds. As always, I'd love to hear your take—what do you think about the Kyle Tucker rumors? Are you optimistic about the Cubs' moves so far? Let's talk about it. Go Cubs, and see you next week! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode I talk about women saying that they wish to "give no fucks" like me ... which shocked me at first.  But I considered how I got to this point and WHY.  Here are my top three points:1.  When you really own who you are (and who you aren't) ... what you're good at and what you aren't ... you become your authentic self.   When you are your AUTHENTIC self ... it's WAY easier to be confident in who you are to the point where you don't give fucks2.  NEXT IT energy is the idea of just taking action ... moving forward every day and not pausing.  If you PAUSE, you overthink.  If you take ACTION ... you just keep moving and don't worry about what others think.3.  Like Don Miguel says:  "dont take anything personally" ... because everyone on this earth has opinions based on their own book of law.p.s. Love Your Work
308. Why I Quit Podcasting

Love Your Work

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2023 11:12

After nearly eight years of the Love Your Work podcast, I'm quitting. Here's why, and What's Next. Podcasting is a bad business This is not the immediate reason I'm quitting, but it is at the root: Podcasting is a bad business. When the indirect benefits of an activity run out, it's hard to keep doing it if it's not making money. I realized long ago podcasting is a bad business, but I kept going for other reasons. I'll explain why in a bit. Though I didn't start my podcast with dollar signs in my eyes, I did at least hope I would grow to earn money doing it. I've earned about $32,000 in the eight-year history of Love Your Work. More than half of that has been from Patreon supporters, many of whom support for reasons other than the podcast. During that time, I've spent: $1,008 on hosting $11,749 on assistance with editing and publishing $241 on equipment And some other expenses, for a total of about $13,000 In raw numbers, I've made a “profit” on the podcast. But, as I broke down in my latest income report, my “wage” was about $6 an hour. My podcast comprised about 5% of my income over these eight years, and took much more than that portion of my time and energy. Of course, I don't think about whether the podcast was worth it in terms of an hourly rate. Creative work happens in Extremistan, not Mediocristan, and I've made massive life choices to be free to explore creatively without worrying so much what I'm earning in the short-term. Ways to make money podcasting But there are many different ways to make a podcast a solid business, and none of them worked for me, for various reasons. Here are some of these business models, as they apply to the “thought-leader” space (I'll ignore the more entertainment/infotainment space that podcasts like Gimlet's inhabit). Be so massively famous, you can pick-and-choose advertisers, while demanding a lot of money. This is where Tim Ferriss and Joe Rogan are. They both started with large platforms, and applied whatever talents that helped them earn those platforms to make their podcasts huge. After more than fifteen years as a creator, I have a modest platform, but orders of magnitude smaller. Build a “content machine” that manufactures ad slots. I won't name names, but you've heard these podcasts. They're formulaic and don't seem to discern much who they have as a guest, nor what sponsors they accept. This business model is why my inbox is still full of pitches – they think I actually want more guests, because more guests would mean more ad slots. It takes a very rare set of circumstances for me to be excited to interview someone. Share information that directly helps people make money. If you have tactical and actionable information that's useful to professionals in a specific industry, you can charge for premium podcast content. I'm not as interested in the tactical and actionable as I am in the abstract and exploratory. Cover a niche topic. If you have a leading podcast about a very specific topic, advertisers within that niche will be willing to pay high rates to reach that audience. I didn't want to build my podcast according to a specific topic – more on that later. Have a “back-end” business. If you have a thriving consulting business, or training programs to sell, you can attract more clients and customers through your podcast. As I wrote in my ten-year reflections, “I want to make a living creating. I don't want creating to be merely a marketing strategy for other things. Is that completely insane?” I flirted with success in a few of these business models. Early on, I hoped my podcast would be famous enough to pick and choose advertisers at high rates. For a while, it looked like I had a chance. I was approached by a podcast network, and I had some reputable advertisers such as LinkedIn, Skillshare, Casper, Audible, Pittney Bowes, and University of California. Various times, I thought I was on the cusp of my “big break” – such as when Love Your Work was featured on the Apple Podcasts home screen. But the more I tried to go the “get famous” route, the louder the siren-song of the “content machine” route got. There were plenty of opportunities to do “interview swaps” with hosts I wasn't interested in interviewing. There were a few advertisers that had money, but whose products felt sleazy. Joining a podcast network would have pressured me to crank out content even if I didn't feel like it. There was (and still is) the never-ending stream of pitch emails for guests. I had too much wax in my ears to go the “content machine” route. Not included in my lifetime revenue-estimates for Love Your Work is money I made through the “back-end business” route. I was somewhat comfortable with this model, but I haven't made a course in years, as I've been focused on writing books. And as bad a business as people say writing books is, it's better than making a podcast. The podcast has helped me sell books in more ways than one. One way is that people who listened to the podcast bought my books. The other way is, making my podcast helped me write my books. This brings me to the reason I kept making my podcast, even after I realized it wasn't a good business. Make for what making makes you In my sixteen years experimenting with different business models as an independent creator, I've settled on one thing that works: Make for what making makes you. If making a podcast, writing a book, sending a weekly newsletter – you name it – merely makes you money, and doesn't make you who you want to be, what's the point? Sure, sometimes you don't feel like creating, and you do it anyway. Yes, sometimes you pick one project over another because you think it will be more lucrative. But you can only redirect the river that is your creativity so much before it overflows and returns to its natural path. I learned from my guests When I started Love Your Work, and was struggling to make it big enough to work with an ad model, even if I wasn't bringing in lots of ad revenue, I was still connecting with and learning from my guests. It was an incredible privilege to have in-depth conversations with people like Seth Godin, Elise Bauer, and David Allen. It was like having my own personal advisory board of heroes. Talking to them helped me learn how to go off the beaten path and find my calling. I was able to find patterns in their stories that I could apply to my own life and career. I would be a completely different person today if I hadn't had those conversations. It was time to explore But there came a point when doing interviews was no longer serving me the way it once had. It was when I had gained the confidence – thanks to my previous guests – to explore further my own ideas. That's when I stopped interviewing guests, so I'd have more time to explore. Love Your Work shifted from my personal advisory board to my personal sounding board – a sort of “open mic,” where I fleshed out ideas. I got to see how it felt to effortfully explore each idea. I got to hear how they sounded when I read them aloud. I got to feel how they resonated (or didn't) with others. It helped me write my books A couple years after I started Love Your Work, I started writing a book called Getting Art Done. Getting Art Done turned out to be three books, two of which I've published. Love Your Work has been there to help me explore the ideas in these books. The Heart to Start was full of conversations from my early guests, and came from my very real struggles in gaining the confidence to take my ideas seriously enough to pursue them. Mind Management, Not Time Management came from my very real struggles to harness my creative energy and push my ideas forward. As I work on the final book in the Getting Art Done trilogy, Finish What Matters, I'm asking myself, What struggle does this book come from? Clearly, I've finished a lot of creative work: three books, over two-hundred consecutive weekly newsletters, and over three-hundred episodes of this podcast. But as I've dwelt on that final word in the title, matters, I'm asking myself if I'm really working on what matters? Love Your Work and Getting Art Done have been an exploration in creative productivity. But at some point, writing about Resistance becomes a form of Resistance. I don't feel I've reached that point yet, but I don't want to. If I'm going to learn enough to write Finish What Matters, I have to really test my ideas of what matters. I've probably explored enough ideas, through Love Your Work, that I want to develop further in Finish What Matters. But for the time being, I need space to explore what matters. That's the biggest reason I'm quitting Love Your Work. I had considered doing so in the past, but I kept hoping I'd know What's Next before I quit. I've come to realize that I can't know What's Next until I have the space to explore. What's Next is finding What's Next It's a little scary to have that void. But it's also exciting. Furthermore, I've faced The Void many times before: when I started on my own, after finishing each book, and a little bit after each podcast episode or newsletter. What's scarier now than facing the void is that I'll stick with what's safe, and distract myself into dying with my best creations inside me. I could just say I'm taking a break, or not say anything at all and stop until I felt inspired to make a new episode. I've talked before about how I struggle to burn my boats and close doors. So, I'm calling it quits, knowing I could always drop another episode in the feed down the line if I wanted to. But I hope I find something that matters more, before that ever happens. Transcript included below…Today, we're going to talk briefly about what the implications are when a guitarist gets sick. Now, when you saw the title of today's episode, perhaps you thought the word “sick” was slang for “awesome,” or “ridiculously skilled,” like a guitarist who can play blisteringly fast licks on his or her instrument. But if you listen to my voice on the podcast version of this, you'll be able to tell instantly that I've got quite a bit of congestion, because I actually am sick.  I woke up with what I might call my “talk radio” voice.  And a whole lot of coughing. Thanks to the magic of audio editing on the podcast version, I'll be able to notch out any coughing fits or the need to blow my nose or sneeze, but if you're listening, you will still need to endure this altered sound of my voice for just a few minutes today. Here's why.I rarely miss the opportunity to learn something, and today is no exception.  I invite you to learn with me.  Here are a few talking points I'll offer you.  First…Illness is a part of life.Illness, though annoying, is a reality on our journeys.  Even if we're super healthy overall, we will occasionally encounter illness. And how we respond to that illness can be a mindset thing that helps us recover more quickly, but also embrace the need to take time to recharge. When I'm sick, I'm reminded that this world is not my home, and that my strength does not come from me. I'm also reminded that prayer is important, and if I take each bout of coughing as an opportunity for a brief prayer to the Lord to sustain and restore me, I take my eyes off myself and I focus on the Great Physician and what He might be teaching me.I've said this before, and I'll say it again: we are always learning…or at least we always can be.  Second…We can power through…until we can't.Sometimes, the illness is slight, and we can pace ourselves with fluids, vitamin C, and gear down just a bit as we continue with our work, our practice, and our lives. But some illnesses really knock us over at times.I've met guys who are super “masculine” who say “I'm going to ‘embrace the suck' and just power through this illness.  It's not going to affect me.”  Or “I refuse this, so it's just going to go away.”Meanwhile, they're physically miserable.  It might actually be better if they took a day or more to heal.I don't necessarily think “powering through” an illness is the best course of action, but if the illness is slight, taking things just a bit slower and being aware of our bodies and minds can help. As I string these words together, my mind is pretty clear, but not as clear as it is when I'm healthy, so if there's less logic in my thoughts, that may be partially due to my illness.  So, I ask for your grace, if that's the case.  Hey, that rhymes. Now, if someone has a severe or chronic health situation, sometimes things need to be put on hold on some level.  It's ok to do that.  We need to be able to give ourselves permission to hit the “pause” on some areas of our lives.  Next…Illness is an opportunity to learn things. Some of us, including me, sometimes tend to think that we have unlimited energy or strength, but this isn't reality.  This misperception can get checked real quick if a bout of illness comes along.Living like I'm in charge takes me places where the Lord is not the focus, and then I forget that each breath, each heartbeat, is a gift from Him.Colossians 1:17 reminds us that “[Christ] is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” He is literally holding me together.  I'm not doing this – He is.So perhaps a bout of illness can be an opportunity to be reminded that my strength, my life, my breath…these are not my own. And it's humbling, for sure, but it also lends perspective.  Humility never hurt anyone, and neither did perspective.  Next…It takes two to tango.Since this is a guitar blog, let's talk for a moment about the guitar, and how we learn. The guitar learning experience requires two basic parties: a teacher and a student.  If one of the parties gets sick, well, the lesson needs to be rescheduled. It just makes very little sense to try to keep a lesson while one party is fighting something…and if that lesson is in person, there's the risk of “sharing” what one of them has with the other. For years, I taught one-on-one guitar lessons, with a roster of 50 students and a waiting list.  I enjoyed it, especially when students applied themselves.I also had a cancellation policy, because inevitably, some students missed a lesson due to illness.  And once in a while, my health (or lack thereof) precluded me from teaching well.  So, I'd cancel a day of lessons, and would reschedule those students' times with me at their nearest convenience, usually the following week.It can be inconvenient to cancel a lesson due to illness, but here's the thing…this can actually be prevented, even in the case of illness.  Go here with me.You may know that I've created an online guitar learning experience unlike any other.  We have premium lesson content that I've recorded in video, audio, and transcript format, with full-color worksheets. And my members get access to these materials 24/7.  So, if I'm ill, I don't have to worry about trying to be strong enough to teach a lesson.  I can rely on the lesson content that I've carefully crafted, that's waiting for my members in the portal. And of course, that lesson content was captured when I was feeling well, and thinking clearly.Conversely, if a member is ill, they don't have to go through the lesson content at that time.  They can wait, and recover, and then revisit the lesson at their own pace, at a time when they're feeling better.  They can even “batch watch” some of the lessons, or speed them up if they want to.Problem solved.  The tango can continue, even despite illness. Now, some students prefer a one-on-one teacher, and I fully support that, but if you think about the logistics around driving to a person's teaching studio, or agreeing on a mutual time to connect either in person or over Zoom, there can be added factors to overcome.By contrast, the learning environment I've put together is a game-changer.The lesson content has been created based on almost three decades of touring, performing, leading worship, and recording in the studio, so it's highly relevant, and can be enjoyed over and over. Plus, we have guest experts who speak on a variety of guitar-related topics as well…which you wouldn't find in a one-on-one lesson environment.I'll leave it with you to take a closer look at what we've got, but rest assured, if you're a beginning or intermediate Christian guitarist and you're looking for something to help you get out of a rut, you may have just found it. You can check it out at www.GuitarSuccess4U.com.  Next…Perseverance and patience are worthy things.Struggles and trials, especially like illness, can lead to opportunities for perseverance and patience. James 1:4 reminds us that “Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” And patience is one of the fruits of the spirit in Galatians chapter 5. The Lord can use illness to produce these virtues in us…if we allow Him to do so.  Lastly…We are being renewed by the Lord.I'll leave you with one more passage of scripture.2 Corinthians 4:16 says: “Therefore we do not lose heart.  Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”We are all getting older.  We are all getting weaker.  But these are only the physical sides of things. Illness is a physical thing.  Sure, it can impact us emotionally, but when we are spiritually nourished by the hope that we have in Christ, we remember that we are not bound for this world. We can make music (especially when we're feeling well), but we can also rest and recover. We can also experience lifelong rest in the sufficiency of God's plan to bring us home after we've learned what He wants us to learn here. So, keep learning, keep growing, take things at your pace, and remember that when illness comes – the learning and growing doesn't stop; it's just a little different.Well, I hope today was uplifting and encouraging for you on some level.  Thanks so much for being willing to listen to my “talk radio voice” as I've shared these thoughts with you.My coughing has brought me what I like to call a “rockin' headache,” so I'm going to go lay low, force fluids, and do all the things, so I can get back to life. But even as I do this, I'm going to prayerfully invite the Lord to continue teaching me that He is my strength.  I'll see you next time…hopefully, when I'm feeling much better. Thanks for reading Guitar Serious Fun! This is for those moments when you're at the end of the road, the edge of the cliff — the beginning of something… So, now what? Today I'll show you... The “unexpected” allows us to go so much deeper than what we thought we would, should, or could…to discover what's really there. The NEXT… It allows us to find out and discover what's there in our NOW, to create the NEXT. So…Now What? Sometimes this can be the scariest question after something unexpected happens, or something new is about to begin. So instead, I encourage you to look at NOW and NEXT. That's right... NOW. AND. NEXT. You're at the crossroad, and you must make a decision to go right or left. Are you going right or left? Are you going the way that's right for you? OR… Are you going to “left” — to leave it — to leave yourself? To leave it all? Start with…Now. Why? If you're not HERE. NOW. then you're going to be NOWHERE. Then, WHAT NOW? Not, now what? BUT... What Now? Then… Now. When? There's no greater WHEN then NOW. There's no greater WAY to go to NEXT then from (and through) NOW. NOW. NEXT. How? Now. And. Now. NOW + NOW is kind of like 1 + 1. It doesn't equal 2…it equals 11. Now + Now is exponential!! The NOW NEXT MOVEMENT is catapulted and fueled by NOW. AND. NOW. What are you willing to do NOW and NOW to move to NOW…NEXT? Only YOU can answer that for yourself. You can move from feeling like you're drowning…to sipping. Feeling like it's overcoming you...to overcoming. By BECOMING in the process of NOW AND NOW. Moving from NOW to NEXT. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. JOURNAL (Daily Action To Engage yourself.) TODAY'S SACRED S.O.L. STEP: Write down what you see right here in the NOW. What does your NOW look like? Then write down the word: NEXT. What would your next step look like in the NOW? Write it down and commit to taking it today. Govcon Giants Podcast

Prior to doing the podcast, I met Travis at dinner in Las Olas through a mutual friend Patrick Cohen. Travis recently arrived here in S. Florida and had plans for connecting good people in business together. He wanted a community in S. Florida that would connect finance, developers and entrepreneurs in the same room. A few months later I attended the event sponsored by his company and since that time we've exchanged numerous texts, calls and emails back and forth discussing various business deals, partnerships and team members.  But strangely enough it would be another few months before I could get him on the podcast. At the time his company Saalex was in the middle of an acquisition and he didn't want to say anything that would jeopardize the deal.  On April 4, 2022 the news hit that his company Saalex acquired Rhode Island based Netsimco in a $30 million transaction and so now we would be able to sit down and have a conversation.  As per the article The company's acquisition of Netsimco will allow it to reach annual recurring revenue of $100 million. For context, Saalex CFO Randy Wheeler said the company generated about $5 million in revenue in 2010, and has shown “consistent growth” to reach the $100 million mark. Saalex Corporation is an Engineering and Information Technology Services firm with core capabilities in the areas of Test Range Operations and Management, Information Technology, Test and Evaluation, Logistics and Engineering Services, founded in 1999 by CEO Travis Mack. More recently Managed security service provider (MSSP) Valeo Networks of which Mr. Mack is the CEO  acquired Next IT, a Michigan-based managed service provider (MSP). The deal marks the sixth and largest acquisition for Valeo Networks and is part of the company's overall growth strategy. The company previously acquired On Time Tech, a California-based MSP, in November 2021. Mr. Mack provides executive leadership and direction for Saalex Corporation the parent company for Saalex Solutions and Valeo Networks. He provides oversight and guidance for each division's strategic growth and tactical operational initiatives. His experience includes multi-year service in the U.S. Navy and Senior Technology management positions with Homestore.com, and Modis IT Consulting. Mr. Mack holds a B.S. in Business Management and an Honorary Doctorates Degree in Business from Webber International University.  Valeo Networks is a full-service, award-winning Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP) that serves State, County, Municipal markets; small-to-medium businesses (SMBs); and non-profit organizations. Valeo Networks provides solutions in the areas of cybersecurity, compliance, cloud, network infrastructure, and managed IT services headquartered in Rockledge, FL,  I promise you will enjoy this podcast as we get into the nuts and bolts of how this veteran built not one but two successful businesses.  How he launched a $50M Real Estate fund?  How was he able to finance acquisitions of this magnitude?  This interview was captured live in Mr. Mack offices downtown Ft Lauderdale, FL a few blocks from Las Olas, you can feel the energy.  Welcome our next Giant, Mr. Travis Mack.

RIP American democracy?

The crisis in Ukraine is edging toward what its president warns will be a “full-scale war” if Russian troops move in on the country — but this might also be a proxy war for democracy as we know it. What emboldened Putin to act now? Could it be that Russia believes Washington is weaker now than ever before, between troubles at NATO and turmoil at the White House? And if democracy is at risk at home, how justified is the fight for it abroad? Guest host David Greene discusses with panelists Megan McArdle, columnist at the Washington Post, on the right; and Mo Elleithee, executive director of Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public Service, on the left. Next: It's time for the United States to take a metaphorical look in the mirror. Former President Donald Trump gave a fiery speech in Texas, hinting at another bid for the presidency, while also calling for people to protest in American cities if prosecutors investigating him did anything “wrong or illegal.” If that sounds a little too familiar, it might be because there's an audience listening to Trump's rhetoric — and we bring on special guest Jean Guerrero of the Los Angeles Times to explain why. Then: If you're listening to this show on Spotify, you might have heard about the spat between musician Neil Young, podcast host Joe Rogan, and the audio streaming platform. Young demanded his music be taken down from Spotify because Rogan had been allowed to spread misinformation about vaccines and COVID. So what does Spotify owe its listeners? Should publishers be taking stances on the content they put out? Or does that create more echo chambers where good faith dialogue is desperately needed? Finally: Our panelists rant about why the left and right don't talk enough, and why fake snow is the absolute worst.

So, now what? Today I'll show you... The “unexpected” allows us to go so much deeper than what we thought we would, should, or could…to discover what’s really there. The NEXT… It allows us to find out and discover what’s there in our NOW, to create the NEXT. So…Now What? Sometimes this can be the scariest question after something unexpected happens, or something new is about to begin. So instead, I encourage you to look at NOW and NEXT. That's right... NOW. AND. NEXT. You’re at the crossroad, and you must make a decision to go right or left. Are you going right or left? Are you going the way that’s right for you? OR… Are you going to “left” — to leave it — to leave yourself? To leave it all? Start with…Now. Why? If you’re not HERE. NOW. then you’re going to be NOWHERE. Then, WHAT NOW? Not, now what? BUT... What Now? Then… Now. When? There’s no greater WHEN then NOW. There’s no greater WAY to go to NEXT then from (and through) NOW. NOW. NEXT. How? Now. And. Now. NOW + NOW is kind of like 1 + 1. Mark Crowell has had quite an amazing culinary journey with a lot of risks and a lot of reward. First he tells me how he found out about cooking, by staging at a restaurant in Europe, and brought that love back to the United States and worked hard enough to open his own restaurant. But opening up a restaurant was really hard, and he struggled. Eventually, he became an R+D Director at both Olive Garden and Starbucks. Eventually, Mark threw it all away and started consulting. He again struggled at first but then he started to build. Now CuliNex is a thriving clean label consulting company in Washington. He has a dozen members on his team, people with whom I’ve met personally! I think the best part of the episode is the stories Mark gives about the struggles of creating businesses. But there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. As long as you have some faith. Sponsor: Salt of the Earth I'm happy to introduce our newest sponsor: Salt of the Earth and their new ingredient,  Mediterranean Umami, an all-natural and clean-label flavor enhancer and sodium reduction ingredient that works amazingly on meats, veggie-meats, soups and sauces and ready-meals. My friend, David gave me a bottle and I use it on my pasta sauces, or rice porridge to give it the satisfying umami depth I crave.  Find the 2017 IFT Innovation Award Winner at IFT19 at booth number 2112 where they will be showcasing fresh food prepared with Mediterranean Umami. If you're interested now, feel free to email them at info@salt.co.il Show Notes When someone asks what you do for a living, what do you tell them?: We’re in the clean label development business What does CuliNex stand for: My wife made the name 15 years ago, it’s Culinary and Next It wasn’t until 2011 that clean label started to buble up Clean Label definitons: Length of the label, complex wording, nutrition label Lo Han -Monkfruit for bakery application. A client came to us right after it was approved Describe the Steps it took to get to where you are today?: Talked my way into a national hotel kitchen, practiced for a year, then worked 5 years as a line cook. Applied to the Culinary Institute of America Took 2 years to get accepted. At the time, it was a while before I heard back Continental Cuisine: Not a specific type of cuisine Florida International University: Hotel Management I was in the restaurant business: manager, district manager, coffee shops, dinner houses, discotheques Why did you decide to start your business Other example: Kenny Lao Made a Mediterranean restaurant. Huge restaurant Didn’t go so well, got a job referral for Olive Garden TUFTS Analysis Darden Restaurants Season 52 Howard Schultz running for president Howard Schultz’ book Pumpkin Scone Pumpkin Spice Latte NRA Show Consulting was hard the 1st year, but I ended up building it until 6 years later, had a sustainable business but then I got bored and started to build up a company Emily Munday was my first employee The E-myth Revisited What is some advice for things that are hard?: You gotta do what you are passionate about. It will see you through the tough times. You also gotta have faith. I’ve learned the word over the past 25 years. You’re up on the high wire, but you gotta trust your people My Food Job Rocks: I get to work on amazing projects with amazing people Phil Saneski Food Trends and Technology: Upcycling movement, Cultured Meat The biggest challenge the food industry has to face: diet misinformation Favorite Kitchen Item: Stainless Steel Bowls Advice for starting something scary: Entrepreneurs are weird. They are different. Are you different? Research Chef Association; Why Donate?: Education is really important and community is really important Where can we find you?: mark@culinex.biz

Gobbledygeek is no stranger to generations-spanning epics; the whole show has been an experimental piece showing how different pop culture artifacts complement and dovetail with one another, and of how the love of two co-hosts will endure for the rest of history. Haha, just kidding, we're just a dumb podcast, but this week we are talking about something that is certainly not dumb and is most definitely ambitious: Tom Tykwer and Andy & Lana Wachowski's Cloud Atlas. Paul and AJ are both fans of the film and describe why it works for them and how emotional it made them, while also discussing the whole "yellowface" controversy. Plus, there was this whole big election thing that happened. They talk about that. Next: It's the third annual Gobbledygeek Thanksgiving! This time, instead of actually talking to other human beings, we will be most thankful for the Thankskilling duology.
