Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker. When is the right time to make your project? Be it a book, a movie or podcast. The most useful answer for me has always been: start right now. There are no guarantees that a work of art will be completed and received like you conceived it in your mind. The whole process of creativity sometimes actually needs jumping in, without actually knowing what we're doing or jumping in a way of saying, I didn't have time to lay everything out to make sure that I survive. But I have to go anyway, and do it and take the risk of failure. Welcome to the podcast, tapping creativity with myself, Matthew Temple. And each week, we're going to dive into questions and issues and inspiration around creativity and the creative process.Written and Produced by Matthew C. Writing a memoir is an exercise of vulnerability -if the book is to open door into compassion, empathy and healing. Which is how Deepak Chopra described 'Your Blue is not my Blue' by Aspen Matis . On this week's episode, Aspen discusses with us her creative process, how long it took her to write her two books, and what it takes to give meaning to life experiences that most people would rather repress.Aspen is the author of the #1 Amazon bestseller, ’Your Blue Is Not My Blue: A Missing Person Memoir.’ and Girl in the Woods. Her short form writing has also been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Tin House, Psychology Today, Salon, Cosmopolitan, Lit Hub, Bloomberg, and Marie Claire.Aspen is the Founder and Creator of The Human Network, a not-for-profit think tank, for peace. Since 2015, she has served as the face of RAINN (the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network). 5% of Girl in the Woods’ profits goes to RAINN.Written and Produced by Matthew C. In the creative process, it can be easy to get tied up into hitting goals. Because sometimes without setting the goals, as we know, we don't get there, we don't have a good roadmap. But the other piece is that when I show up every day, without the attainment of the goal being the important thing, but instead, it's how do I show up in service of that goal? Or how do I show up in service of the work? Written and Produced by Matthew C. TempleEdited by Tyen MusaOriginal Theme Music by Adrian LeeABOUT MEI started my career as an accidental filmmaker. Do you ever doubt you're doing anything since you have nothing to show for your efforts. Or if you have an idea, and you don't actually ever make it, do you ever question what good you are? Granted, you actually have to implement all the stuff you plan. But also powering down, allowing yourself time in that discovery phase, that openness that let's see you what else could be coming: that is actually a vital step in every great creative's process. 'What I learnt from directing the movie Caged is that your movie is only as good as your weakest scene. So you have to fight to make sure that none of the scenes is terribly bad.'~Aaron FjellmanAaron Fjellman is an American writer and director. Recently, he made his feature film debut with Caged, a psychological thriller about the horrific, mind bending effects of solitary confinement. The film stars Edi Gathegi (X-men First Class), Melora Hardin (The Office), and Angela Sarafyan (Westworld). Born and raised in Southern California, he attended film school at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. After college, he moved back to Los Angeles and began his career as a director, working on music videos, commercials, and digital shorts with an array of American and European clients. His short-form work garnered opportunities to travel the world, forging significant friendships and loyal business partners along the way. A boyhood infatuation with genre filmmaking influences his project choices and distinct visual style to this day. Little did he know that an obsession with pop culture’s dark side would one day fuse with his desire to promote meaningful social change through art.Written and Produced by Matthew C. How do you make your creativity, something that's not just about yourself? But something that you can involve a broader community in?I've had to ask myself these questions. Can I find people who are a little bit better than me or peers, mostly who trust me enough to be able to come and say, 'I'm gonna be totally honest with you about this thing.' They could be off the wall. I've got another friend who is ADD and has no patience. And so I he'll be like, 'This script is boring. I didn't get through it. It was too boring. ' Even just that feedback tells me something.Written and Produced by Matthew C. TempleEdited by Tyen MusaOriginal Theme Music by Adrian LeeABOUT MEI started my career as an accidental filmmaker. "As creatives, the time that we spend is sometimes incredibly fruitful and sometimes not fruitful at all, one of the things that I was able to fall back onto was rhythm. At the beginning of a creative project, so many of us (and I am super, super guilty of this) end up finding ourselves imagining the project completed. We imagine the accolades. In part because we’ve been taught that complete is somehow better than incomplete. Therefore, when something's incomplete it is lacking. Which is true in some ways – but that’s only part of the story.Written and Produced by Matthew C. If you have only one idea, and it's the basket you put all of your eggs into, you're actually not an artist, you're not a creative. The song that you wrote three years ago, is three years old. Put it out there, do the work continually to get better, and keep moving forward. Do what makes you feel alive, share what you have created with whoever you can, and then go make more of it. Reading back on the biographies of luminaries like Goethe, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky, one thing that great thinkers and artists have done is given themselves R&R time. Time to just rest and relax. But in American (or modern Western society), there’s a cultural imperative to push, push, push. Get stuff done. Prove your value, prove your worth, get more money, get more fame, get more glory. We then actually devalue this other time - this time to chill.Let’s talk about the trade off of time, particularly as it relates to creative work. Written and Produced by Matthew C. You gotta choose a creative project to sink your teeth into. And then when you do, you need to start making choices - what sentence to write, what rhyme to cut. And you might add the wrong thing and cut out the part that was great. I have scripts that I've written, that are just not great. But I had to put it out there and then went back and did a whole rewrite, and then it got a little bit better, and then did a whole rewrite. But I couldn't have gotten to the fifth rewrite, that's pretty good, unless I did the first draft that was bad.Written and Produced by Matthew C. "Sometimes you need things to line up. But when they're not lining up, you have to say, well, what's in my power at this moment that I can do? And I think that's really important for artists, particularly anyone who's struggling at some point. At any point where there's a blockage of some type it's important to say, yeah, there are all these reasons why I can't do something, but what can I do right now?Whether it's an issue of time like, I've got a full time job, and I'm a single mom, great, you have limited time. Today's Guest: Deborah Calla, screenwriter, producer, A Beautiful Life A Beautiful Life starring Bai Ling. Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD above! I haven’t spoken with her yet, but my sense is that Deborah Calla, who produced and co-wrote the new indie film A Beautiful Life, feels a strong connection to the lead character of Maggie. It’s just a sense, but the character of Maggie, a teenage girl running away from the sexual abuse of her father, doesn’t seem like an emotional story you would want to participate in telling unless it really spoke to your soul. Of course, I could be completely mistaken. Calla, a Brazilian native, first discovered Wendy Hammond’s play, Jersey City, back in 1996. It took a long time to translate Jersey City into A Beautiful Life, but I’m sure there is an audience out there for this alternately harsh and yet tender slice of modern life. DEBORAH CALLA podcast excerpt: "I think this is the best work Bai has ever done. This is a woman who looks amazing with makeup on, amazing without any makeup on. She just has so many different colors and goes through such a journey. I hope this movie will show other producers and directors what she can really do." And Calla found some strong women to fill the lead and featured roles, starting with Angela Sarafyan as Maggie, the lead character, and continuing with Bai Ling as Maggie’s protector, Dana Delaney as her mother and Debi Mazar as a librarian who takes an interest in Maggie. The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Angela Sarafyan of HBO's WestWorld. WestWorld premiering on HBO Oct 2nd Sarafyan is an actress who is about to have a truly breakout year. Currently, she is cast in of one of HBO's most anticipated shows, WESTWORLD, alongside Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, and Thandie Newton. The show is inspired by the 1973 film, set in a futuristic theme park inhabited by artificial beings. Sarafyan plays Clementine Pennyfeather, one of Westworld's most popular attractions. Every aspect of Clementine is perfectly beguiling, by design. As you might expect from HBO, everything from the sound design to the costumes is of the highest caliber, to the point where the show is being called the next Game Of Thrones. Later this year, Sarafyan is also set to star in “The Promise” opposite Christian Bale and Oscar Issac in an intricate story about the forgotten tragedy of the Armenian Genocide. As a native Armenian, this is a story that is very close to her heart. Some of Sarafyan's recent work includes the Weinstein/James Gray feature THE IMMIGRANT, opposite Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix, a film that has continued to garner praise after its auspicious start as an Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival . Her past credits also include the Relativity/Robert Luketic feature PARANOIA, opposite Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman, and Liam Hemsworth and the final film in the Twilight franchise, BREAKING DAWN: PART II.
