Diane grew up immersed in the musical soul of New York City. Garisto sang on her first recording at the age of eight, and went on to record with artist like Billy Joel, Nile Rodgers, George Benson, Carly Simon, Laurie Anderson and Malcolm McLaren. She provided background vocals for Paul Simon on his Grammy-winning Graceland and toured internationally as a member of Steely Dan, but her career peak came in the mid ‘90s when she became a member of Laura Nyro's celebrated Harmony Group. As one of Nyro's famed backing trio, Diane toured the world with Laura and sang on the albums Live: The Loom's Desire and Live In Japan. “Performing these songs today with a band of Manhattan's top musicians and singers is my way of keeping Laura's spirit vibrant and alive,” Garisto says. “For us and for her fans, Stoned Soul Picnic is a celebration of the art and soul of Laura Nyro.”

Musician Michelle Coltrane, daughter of Alice, step-daughter of John, offers backstory on Alice's time growing up in Detroit through Michelle's own growing up time between California, New York, and visits to Detroit. Michelle has proclaimed, 'The Year of Alice Coltrane' here in 2024 (with a centennial celebration of John coming soon as well!). This Alice Coltrane year was bench-marked by a recent release from her archives, The Carnegie Hall Concert, from 1971. Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda was at a creative peak when recording this Carnegie show. Backed by two drummers, two bassists, two saxophone/woodwind musicians and two other percussion/utility musicians. Alice helped put this show together as a benefit/tribute to Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru she first encountered in 1969 while in the depth of grief, after losing her husband, John Coltrane. This show was on the heels of an album where she also honored him, Journey In Satchidananda--released the week before this concert. Alice shared the billing with Laura Nyro and The Rascals--the draw of the evening, whose Felix Cavaliere was a devote follower, as was Nyro. Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders got second billing next to Alice's name, as he was a rising star in the jazz world, sprouting from John Coltrane's stable along side of Alice herself. An R&B musician herself, Michelle takes us on a journey of her lifetime through her own lens, of times in Detroit, following her mother to concerts, spending time with Swami Satchidananda, dealing with her own career, and how her and step-brothers Ravi and Oran (John Jr. passed in '82) continue to grow and sprout the legacy of both Alice and John Coltrane. Laura Nyro wrote this song - (a tribute to torch singer Helen Merrill) - in 1966, but, it didn't do much for her at the time. Three years later, when The Fifth Dimension recorded it, it shot to number 1. The radiant lead vocalist, Marilyn McCoo, sang it to her betrothed, Billy Davis Jr., on the various television variety shows of the day, and audiences lapped it up. Nyro, the oddball composer-prodigy from the Bronx, consistently channeled her soulful declarations to many other artists of the time - (Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat and Tears, Barbara Streisand) before being identified as the singular genius behind the magic. My high school girlfriend Cindy was a 4'11'' spitfire with an identical twin. Her dad, Hank, a long-distance truck driver with a provocative (to put it generously) sense of humor, enjoyed teasing us. He called me “Keppy” (the yiddish word for Head, because my hair was thinning). Whenever this song came on the radio, trumpeting the refrain: “Marry Me, Bill!” - and it was ubiquitous - Hank, and Cindy's two older brothers, would give us shit mercilessly, - and I HATED IT. I hated the song and I hated them for pushing the uncomfortable question on us - because, despite the fact that Cindy hoped for the eventuality of matrimony, I didn't, and that was painful for her. Today this song sustains a shining memento for me - a reminder that I have enjoyed the gift of being loved by a soul who refused to give up on me. Fiercely loyal, uncompromising in her passions,- Cindy, my first love.

We kick off season five with a long-overdue episode on singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. Joined by vocal group Labelle on this record, Nyro showcases her knack for R&B and soul music through a wide range of cover songs, an interesting choice for an artist arguably best known for having other musicians perform her material. MARRY ME, LAURA!GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE by Laura Nyro with Labelle (1971, Columbia)When I was in high school, dating Cindy, every time The Fifth Dimension's Wedding Bell Blues came on the radio, with it's repeating plea - “MARRY ME, BILL!” -her family would tease us mercilessly. I couldn't escape the power of that record. Later, I realized that that song was created by the ultimate singer-songwriter's singer-songwriter, Laura Nyro, who's other familiar hit compositions include Eli's Coming (3 Dog Night), and And When I Die (Blood, Sweat, and Tears). Laura herself, however, remained a cult attraction. The benighted Nyro (born Nigro, the child of Russian-Polish parents in the Bronx) died young, like her mother, of ovarian cancer at the age of 49. Prior to the ordeals that characterized her later life, the musical atmosphere of that borough bathed the budding songsmith - (as it did Dion DiMucci) - in deep, resonating waves of doo-wop, soul, R&B, and pop. This album of covers is a trembling masterwork of tribute to those influences, assisted by the one and only Patti Labelle, who had become a sort of caretaker for the fragile Nyro. On the tour that preceded this recording Labelle would cook for her friend. Laura's love life was fraught, her careerist stumbles are the stuff of legend: (Best friend David Geffen was heartbroken when she re-signed with Columbia, instead of joining him on his fledgling Asylum label), but her music remained pure, and timeless. This recording has always been my favorite of mine - a time traveler's dream, since I first heard it. R&B titans Gamble and Huff oversaw the production from their seat of soul, in Philadelphia - (although, reputedly, Laura was the one fully in charge throughout the proceedings). However it came to be, GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE is a true miracle. Every cut brings tears to my eyes, and delight to my ears.

Episode DetailsEamon O'Flynn, Nathan Smith and Sonya Walton, with special guest Gabe Pollock, discuss Laura Nyro's little-known but exceptionally influential second studio album, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. This album ranked #463 on the 2020 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.Leave comments on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook at @rrmusicpod or visit our website at recordroulettepodcast.com.Runtime: 54 minutesWho is Laura Nyro?Laura Nyro (1947-1997) was an American songwriter, singer and pianist. She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, but the most commercially successful versions of her songs were covers by a wide array of artists, including Three Dog Night and Barbra Streisand. Exceptionally influential in the 1960s and 1970s, she inspired everyone from Joni Mitchell and Carole King to Elton John, Alice Cooper, Paul Stanley and Bette Midler. Nyro was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is her lone entry on the 2020 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list. What is Eli and the Thirteenth Confession?Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is the second studio album from American songwriter and musician Laura Nyro. Never a chart-topper, this album was incredibly influential and covers of "Eli's Comin'," "Sweet Blindness" and "Stoned Soul Picnic" became hits for other artists. Released in 1968, this album is on the 2020 Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list at #463.
Discogs: Dave Mason was a founding member of the group Traffic, but left following the release of their debut album, Mr. Fantasy (1967), only to rejoin halfway through the sessions for their next album, Traffic (1968), after which he left again. Last Exit (1969), a compilation of odds and ends, features little material by Mason apart from his song "Just for You". Traffic later re-formed without Mason, although he briefly began working with the band for a third time, touring with them in 1971 and playing on Welcome to the Canteen. In his brief spells with the group, Mason never quite fit in; Steve Winwood later recalled. In 1970, Mason was slated to be the second guitarist for Derek and the Dominos. He played on their early studio sessions, including the Phil Spector production of "Tell the Truth", which was later withdrawn from sale (and is now a collector's item). He also played at their first gig at the London Lyceum but left the group soon after that. For a brief period in the mid-1990s, Mason joined Fleetwood Mac and released the album Time with them in 1995. He toured with them over the course of 1994–95. Over the course of his career, Mason has played and recorded with many notable pop and rock musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones (e.g. on Street Fighting Man), George Harrison (appearing on All Things Must Pass), Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Steve Winwood, Fleetwood Mac, Delaney & Bonnie, Leon Russell, and...Cass Elliot. One of Mason's best-known songs is "Feelin' Alright", recorded by Traffic in 1968 and later by many other performers, including Joe Cocker, whose version of the song was a hit in 1969. For Traffic, he also wrote "Hole in My Shoe", a psychedelic pop song that became a hit in its own right. "We Just Disagree", Mason's 1977 solo US hit, written by Jim Krueger, has become a staple of US classic hits and adult contemporary radio playlists. Cass Elliot was credited with creating the group name 'The Mamas and The Papas' while watching a TV program, with the other band members, while temporarily residing in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although some releases were still credited to Mama Cass Elliot, it was around this time that she used her original stage name, Cass Elliot. She starred in many a TV show including two specials of her own. She was loved and is still admired for her pleasing alto and all-around ability to entertain. In her way, she was as troubled as her other drug-taking contemporaries like Jim Morrison, in addition to her life-long weight problems which probably kept her close to people but not so close that her loneliness abated. She, to me, sounds like an American Annie Haslam. So if you didn't know that these two members of the RRHOF did an album together, now you do! Wiki: After being introduced by a mutual friend, Mason and Elliot hit it off and decided to pursue singing together professionally. Elliot, having released two solo albums at that time, missed the collaborative effort of producing music, and Mason, who had just arrived in the U.S. after splitting with Traffic, was interested in a fresh collaboration. Originally Elliot was intended to be co-producer with Mason on an intended solo album by the latter: after Elliot sang background for Mason on some sessions the idea of the album being a Mason/Elliot collaboration emerged. Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - Glittering Facade (1971) Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - Sit and Wonder (1971) Dave Mason - Every Woman (1973) Dave Mason - Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave (1970) Dave Mason - Save Me (1980) Michael Jackson on backing vocals. Dave Mason and Cass Elliot - On and On (1971) Cass Elliot - I'll Be There (1972) Cass Elliot (billed as Mama Cass Elliot) - It's Getting Better (1969) Cass Elliot - New World Coming (1970) Dave Mason - The Lonely One (1973) Stevie Wonder on harmonica solo. Laura Nyro - Beads of Sweat (1970) Laura Nyro (rhymes with "Hero") was a female Jimmy Webb (or he a male Laura Nyro) who reinvented songwriting possibilities for a generation. She influenced so many writers that I cannot list them here. Her influence really shows itself in the works of Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Patti Smith, so so many. She merged the melodic gifts of Carole King with the lyrical ones of Bob Dylan. You know her songs. Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary, with "And When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson, with "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)". Ironically, Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof". Laura Nyro - Eli's Coming (1968) Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry (1969) Laura Nyro - Mr. Blue (1978) Laura Nyro - Smile (1976) Cockney Rebel - Psychomodo (1974) Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) (1976) Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Sebastian (1973) Paul Revere and the Raiders - Ain't Nothing Wrong (1976) Everybody tried disco. Everybody. This song was written by Harry Casey and Rick Finch! Flopped. Johnny Cougar - Need Somebody Baby (1976) Like my unfortunate management deal that forced me to call myself "Sir Gilbert Slitherbottom VI", John Mellencamp's management had no idea who or what he was. He started out for a brief period of time as a "glam rocker" but then tried out for a solo career with his first album Chestnut Street Incident released by former David Bowie manager Tony DeFries on the Mainman (division of MCA) label. That album was a complete flop partly due to the fact that the record label wanted to mold John into something he was not (a pretty boy ala James Dean) and the fact that the album mostly consisted of cover songs. Johnny Cougar - The Man Who Sold the World (1976) What a strange curio from the early days of John Mellencamp. Queen - All Dead, All Dead (1977) The Spotlights - Batman and Robin (1966) Produced by Leon Russell and Snuff Garrett. Gig's a gig! Dion and the Belmonts - My Girl the Month of May (1966) This album features the song "For Bobbie" which was written by John Denver, and he recorded it himself in 1972, retitling it' "For Baby." Mick Taylor - Leather Jacket (1979) Moody Blues - Veteran Cosmic Rocker (1981) Ruth Copeland - The Silent Boatman (1970) Do you prefer this version or the one by Parliament?

Jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears waited until their second studio album to eponymously name it Blood, Sweat & Tears. This band would defy convention in many ways. It was a large band, boasting nine full-time members, and adding a tenth in trumpet player Alan Rubin for one song. They also played a complex mix of progressive music that would come to be called "jazz-rock." This album would be the first with David Clayton-Thomas on lead vocals, and would spend seven weeks at the top of the album charts. It would also be a critical success, netting the band a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1970.Al Kooper, the original band leader and rock legend, started the group. The sound was inspired by the sound of the Buckinghams and Maynard Ferguson. Kooper left after the second album, and David Clayton-Thomas came in as front man. There were over 100 members in Blood, Sweat & Tears over the years, including Bo Bice of "American Idol" fame. The group name came from a Winston Churchill speech.Blood, Sweat & Tears was the number 1 album at the time that the Woodstock music festival was held in August of 1969, and at $15,000 they were the highest paid band to appear at Woodstock behind Jimi Hendrix. For some reason, they decided not to get filmed for the gig, and as a result they are not seen in all the documentaries and retrospectives on that historic concert. It is almost as if Blood, Sweat & Tears were erased from history. On top of that, they didn't get their $15,000 at the end of the concert either!A couple of other factors cause Blood, Sweat & Tears to be overlooked. Their songs tend to be longer during a time when singles were no longer than 3 minutes for radio. They also toured eastern Europe in 1972 to show off rock and roll music, sponsored by the U.S. State Department. The counter culture considered this a sell out, and many of their Vietnam-era protest fans abandoned Blood, Sweat & Tears because of it.Get ready to ride a painted pony and let the spinnin' wheel spin! Smiling PhasesThis very jazzy track is a cover of a song originally done by Steve Winwood and Traffic. The idea is of the song is that you put a smile on no matter what life throws at you. Keep on smiling and moving forward - don't let the obstacles get you down. You've Made Me So Very HappyThis well known track peaked at number 2, and is a cover of a Motown song done originally by Brenda Holloway in 1967. They tried to do this song with Al Kooper on their first album, but Kooper's voice wasn't well-adapted to it. They tried it at a live show with David Clayton-Thomas, and it worked. And When I DieAnother cover that peaked at number 2, this song was written by 17 year-old Laura Nyro and was originally performed by Peter, Paul & Mary. Blood, Sweat & Tears picked up this song when Nyro was dating the bass player. Their cover version went to number 2. It is about recognizing the limited time you have on this earth and making the most of it. That's pretty profound lyrics for a 17 year-old!Spinning WheelThe big single of the album was this well known hit, peaking at - you guessed it - number 2. It compares life to riding on a carousel. Things come and things go, "what goes up must come down." Enjoy the ride. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme to the television series “Marcus Welby M.D.”Robert Young of "Father Knows Best" fame would star in this long-running series that would take on several controversies during its 7-year run. The pilot for the series aired in March of 1969. STAFF PICKS:Day after Day (It's Slippin' Away) by ShangoRob starts our staff picks with this calypso one-hit wonder. It is known as a novelty act about how the earthquakes in California will cause the whole coast to slide into the Pacific - "you better get ready to tie up the boat in Idaho!" Everyday People by Sly & The Family StoneBrian features a big hit from the fusion group Sly & The Family Stone. Everyone is essentially the same and we need to learn to live together. The group was known for combining musical styles and its members' ethnic diversity during a time of racial tensions. Time of the Season by The ZombiesBruce's staff pick was a surprise hit by the group led by keyboardist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone. It took about a year to catch on before hitting number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1969. It has become sort of a counterculture anthem in pop culture, and is frequently used in Vietnam-era scenes and flashbacks.Rock Me by SteppenwolfWayne's staff pick is a deeper cut, though it hit the charts and peaked at number 10 at the time. Lead singer John Kay wrote this one. It has a deeper meaning as a kind of protest song. Canadian band Steppenwolf was nominated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, though they didn't make it in. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Variations On a Theme by Erik Satie (1st Movement) by Blood, Sweat & TearsWe're once again double dipping on our featured album. Blood, Sweat & Tears had a number of instrumental pieces on their albums, and this one is the opening track.
Laura Nigro was a sixteen-year-old musical prodigy who was trying on several last names, as creative types sometimes do. She happened to be "Nyro" when she finally started to catch on in the music industry, so Laura Nyro she became. Nyro was never a huge star in her own right. But she left behind a musical legacy in a bunch of songs that became big hits for other artists. That's a roster that would include Three Dog Night, the Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Nyro wrote "And When I Die." Peter, Paul & Mary made it kinda-sorta famous. But it was Blood, Sweat and Tears that really brought it to the fore. David Clayton Thomas' voice, combined with Dick Halligan's arrangements made for a relatively light-hearted romp through the graveyard. And while BST's version is musically different from Nyro's, they never lost sight of that gospel feel that it had, even as they gave it the cowboy instrumental section. In doing the research for this show, I went down a little bit of a rabbit hole of listening to Laura Nyro's music. I may have to do a whole bunch of shows dedicated to her sometime soon. Nyro is definitely an under-appreciated talent. Click here to become a patron of the show. Click here for a transcript of this episode.

RARE & SCRATCHY ROCK 'N ROLL #_038 CELEBRATES THE COMPLETE HIT SINGLES HISTORY OF THREE DOG NIGHT This episode spotlights one of the most popular rock acts of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The group took its name from an indigenous Australian term for a very cold night, and this band was very hot on the charts with 23 hit singles and 13 hit albums between 1969 and 1976. It also might have been one of the most successful “cover bands” of all time – most of its songs were recorded by somebody else before this group did them. You’re about to sample all of this act’s hit singles and hear all about this group’s connections with “The Flintstones” cartoon show, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding, as well as Pete Seeger, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, Paul Williams, and Hoyt Axton, among many others. You know the group that we’re proudly presenting on this podcast – it’s Three Dog Night.
In this sequel to the original #Bond_age_Radio episode, James (@007hertzrumble) spins tracks because music heals and we all need to heal sometimes. This episode of #Bond_age_ Radio highlights female recording artists that could have/should have/would have done a great James Bond theme, but never had the opportunity. I take listener requests, ignore them when they aren't to my liking and ponder hypotheticals like "one-off-Bond" actor/director scenarios. James Bond music is not just about Shirley Bassey and it never has been. Rare & Scratchy Rock 'N Roll Salutes The 5th Dimension This edition spotlights a group whose more than ten years of hits started in 1967. Their music was a mixture of mainstream pop, rhythm and blues, soul, Broadway show tunes, Hollywood movie soundtrack songs, and even disco. They were everywhere on television during their peak period. You saw them on network variety shows and their own special. They portrayed themselves on a murder/mystery/detecitive series episode. And they chose their music wisely – drawing on some of the greatest songwriters of their era – especially Jim Webb, Laura Nyro, Hal David & Bert Bacharach, Ashford & Simpson, Neil Sedaka, and Paul Anka, among others. As race relations evolved during the late 1960s and early 1970s, this singing group also made social action a part of several hit songs. Their style was described as “champagne soul,” and we’ll serve up a sampling of all their vintage hit singles. They’re the 5th Dimension. Hear how they brought new dimensions to memorable music.
