One morning around 6, the police banged on our door. "OPEN UP!" they shouted, the way police shout when they definitely have an alternative in mind for if you won't. I was awake at the time, because the kids were up early and I was on shift. I opened the door. The cops seemed mollified by the fact that I was carrying twin toddlers and looked too frazzled to commit any difficult crimes. They said they'd gotten a 9-1-1 call from my house with plenty of screaming. Had there been any murders in the past hour or so? https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/the-permanent-emergency

Talking about feelings can be hard, for kids AND parents. Some kids talk freely, others shut down, and many sit somewhere in between. If you've ever felt unsure how to help your child open up, or worried about what's going on beneath the surface, this episode is for you.Silence isn't defiance — it's a signal. Kids can shut down when they don't feel emotionally safe, even when the environment is calm, loving, and well-intentioned. Today I unpack how emotional intelligence, nervous system awareness, and self-regulation change the way kids experience communication and connection. You'll learn why kids decide (unconsciously) whether it's safe to share, how our tone, presence, and reactions matter more than the “right words,” and how letting go of control actually builds trust. I also share simple phrases, somatic calming strategies, and mindset shifts that create space for openness without pressure, fixing, or compliance. If you want deeper connection, more trust, and conversations that happen naturally, without forcing, this episode will change the way you think about talking to your kids.If this way of thinking resonates, my book on Amazon goes deeper into these ideas — emotional intelligence as the foundation for calmer, more connected parenting. Think of it as a companion to this conversation.

The Perry brothers (Alex, Elliott, Dom, and Matt) reunite during the holidays to have the conversations they've avoided for decades. This episode explores how Christmas traditions served as their family's primary connection point while deeper emotional bonds remained broken. They discuss being sent to boarding school, learning to parent with vulnerability their own parents couldn't model, and actively choosing to break cycles of emotional distance. A honest look at family healing, holiday memories, and the uncomfortable growth required to change generational patterns. In your younger years, you may have thought about your future self. I always wanted to be 30 and I would envision what it would look and feel like. I ultimately became 30. There I was. But I did not arrive and become the ultimate “Kevin” at that point. Five years passed and I became 35 and thought about how far I had come since 30. And this continues happening. As of this recording I just turned 55. Five years from now I'll be 60 and likely be amazed at how much I have grown and evolved past the 55 year old I am now. This is the focus of this episode. I am back with Dr Benjamin Hardy. I have had Ben on this podcast six or seven times. His personal story is the lead in the first chapter of my book, “What Drives You.” Ben's books on willpower, personality, and personal transformation have put him at the top of the human potential movement. Here I give focus to Ben's book, Be Your Future Self Now: The Science of Intentional Transformation. It was through Ben that I first heard the concept of, “End of history illusion”, where as I led off with, we look back with amazement at how far we have evolved from who we used to be, but we think who we are now is…who we are. Ben takes us through his research to see how we can open up our personal transformation if we will engage with the future self we are going to become and not only conceive of who we are today. Ben Hardy is an organizational psychologist and has devoted significant research to this issue and become a leading expert on the application of Future Self science. Ben's new book, Be Your Future Self Now, can be found everywhere and you can connect with him at benjaminhardy.com. Russell Kimura, creator of Fathers with Daughters and girl dad of three, shares his journey of learning to show up with intention for his daughters. In this rich conversation, Russell reveals why consistency beats perfection, how to create emotional safety without sacrificing leadership, and why fathers must commit to connection over convenience. He opens up about the tension of releasing control as daughters grow independent, the power of modeling faith through action rather than religious systems, and practical ways to stay connected during the chaotic teenage years. Russell challenges dads to rebel against cookie-cutter parenting, embrace the messiness of real relationship, and prepare for their future role as father-in-law. MAC is not just another podcast, it's a way of life! We welcome Bridgette Martinez, a farmers insurance agent, who can help you in your insurance needs, but has a story of pain; that she turned to purpose. Bridgette shares a story that is impactful, from being so young, getting married, not much family support emotionally, financially yes, but emotional connection is needed, so important. So many of us didn't grow up hungry physically but did grow up hungry for love, for acceptance. We wanted to feel important or worth our parents time. Which like I said, we got their sacrifice, hard work but not emotional / feelings connected. She shares the impact of seeking “Freedom” at a young age, but that quickly came with feeling lonely, controlled, manipulated and lost; definitely not free. She had her children(which she deeply loves), became a wife, mother, and employee but lacked self identity and love. But know she feels a calling upon her life, shared after years of tribulations, heartbreaks, disappointments, she can see God's hand upon her life, a calling to serve and give back to her community, to help those around her, and one way is by saving people on insurances, but more importantly, by connecting with her story, and helping others find themselves. Any questions you may have for my guest or myself, please ask, reach out, comment, email, DM… (just ask, stop letting fear stop you) My email is Themaceffect19@gmail.com for all questions and inquiries. You are not alone; We share together, walk together and heal together, Amen! How do we help kids open up about their day—really open up—so we can guide their hearts, not just manage their behavior? In today's episode, we explore why the classic parent question, "How was your day?" almost always leads to a dead end, and how we can replace it with questions that actually build connection, confidence, and identity. Drawing from Dr. Kathy Koch's deep insight into child development, we look at why kids often shut down when they come home from school, what their silence might be telling us, and how timing, tone, and relational approach matter more than the words themselves. Dr. Kathy explains how performance-centered questions unintentionally send the message that grades matter more than character, and she challenges parents to ask questions that explore who their child was during the day—not just what they did. Together, we unpack better conversation starters that help kids reflect, process emotions, develop humility, grow in problem-solving, and see where God showed up in their lives. We also discuss five identity-based categories—intellectual, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual—and how to engage each one meaningfully. You'll learn about a simple "Go Fish" dinner-table activity that brings the whole family into the conversation and how three words—curious, confused, confident—can reshape the way you talk with your kids about school. Wayne also reflects on a powerful moment from John 21, where Jesus asks Peter three times, "Do you love me?" Instead of shaming Peter, Jesus restores him. That same pattern—gentle, repeated questions that lead to deeper truth—shows us that good questions don't interrogate a child; they bless them. They help them see who they are becoming. This episode is an encouraging, practical guide for parents, grandparents, and caregivers who want to build stronger connections, nurture identity in Christ, and create moments of reflection that shine a bright light through the emotional fog kids sometimes carry home. You'll walk away with new tools, new questions, and a renewed sense of hope as you shepherd your children's hearts.

Meanwhile, a claim that Cardi B had struck a $55 million deal to become a brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton was quickly shot down by the brand, underscoring how celebrity-rumor culture and luxury marketing collide online. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the crew took on how teenage dating abuse looks in the digital age, noting that about 1 in 12 high-school students report physical violence from a partner and nearly 1 in 10 report sexual violence. Each story connects in its own way to power, expectation, and the impact of private actions made public.
