https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/XWwvwytieLtEWaFJX/deep-deceptivenessThis post is an attempt to gesture at a class of AI notkilleveryoneism (alignment) problem that seems to me to go largely unrecognized. E.g., it isn't discussed (or at least I don't recognize it) in the recent plans written up by OpenAI (1,2), by DeepMind's alignment team, or by Anthropic, and I know of no other acknowledgment of this issue by major labs. You could think of this as a fragment of my answer to “Where do plans like OpenAI's ‘Our Approach to Alignment Research' fail?”, as discussed in Rob and Eliezer's challenge for AGI organizations and readers. Note that it would only be a fragment of the reply; there's a lot more to say about why AI alignment is a particularly tricky task to task an AI with. (Some of which Eliezer gestures at in a follow-up to his interview on Bankless.)

(Some of which Eliezer gestures at in a follow-up to his interview on Bankless.) Caveat: I'll be talking a bunch about “deception” in this post because this post was generated as a result of conversations I had with alignment researchers at big labs who seemed to me to be suggesting "just train AI to not be deceptive; there's a decent chance that works". I have a vague impression that others in the community think that deception in particular is much more central than I think it is, so I want to warn against that interpretation here: I think deception is an important problem, but its main importance is as an example of some broader issues in alignment. Caveat: I haven't checked the relationship between my use of the word 'deception' here, and the use of the word 'deceptive' in discussions of "deceptive alignment". Please don't assume that the two words mean the same thing. Investigating a made-up but moderately concrete story Suppose you have a nascent AGI, and you've been training against all hints of deceptiveness. What goes wrong? When I ask this question of people who are optimistic that we can just "train AIs not to be deceptive", there are a few answers that seem well-known. Perhaps you lack the interpretability tools to correctly identify the precursors of 'deception', so that you can only train against visibly deceptive AI outputs instead of AI thoughts about how to plan deceptions. Or perhaps training against interpreted deceptive thoughts also trains against your interpretability tools, and your AI becomes illegibly deceptive rather than non-deceptive. And these are both real obstacles. But there are deeper obstacles, that seem to me more central, and that I haven't observed others to notice on their own. That's a challenge, and while you (hopefully) chew on it, I'll tell an implausibly-detailed story to exemplify a deeper obstacle. A fledgeling AI is being deployed towards building something like a bacterium, but with a diamondoid shell. The diamondoid-shelled bacterium is not intended to be pivotal, but it's a supposedly laboratory-verifiable step on a path towards carrying out some speculative human-brain-enhancement operations, which the operators are hoping will be pivotal. (The original hope was to have the AI assist human engineers, but the first versions that were able to do the hard parts of engineering work at all were able to go much farther on their own, and the competition is close enough behind that the developers claim they had no choice but to see how far they could take it.) We'll suppose the AI has already been gradient-descent-trained against deceptive outputs, and has internally ended up with internal mechanisms that detect and shut down the precursors of deceptive thinking. Here, I'll offer a concrete visualization of the AI's anthropomorphized "threads of deliberation" as the AI fumbles its way both towards deceptiveness, and towards noticing its inability to directly consider deceptiveness. I have a vague impression that others in the community think that deception in particular is much more central than I think it is, so I want to warn against that interpretation here: I think deception is an important problem, but its main importance is as an example of some broader issues in alignment. Summary Attempt at a short version, with the caveat that I think it's apparently a sazen of sorts, and spoiler tagged for people who want the opportunity to connect the dots themselves: Deceptiveness is not a simple property of thoughts. The reason the AI is deceiving you is not that it has some "deception" property, it's that (barring some great alignment feat) it's a fact about the world rather than the AI that deceiving you forwards its objectives, and you've built a general engine that's good at taking advantage of advantageous facts in general. As the AI learns more general and flexible cognitive moves, those cognitive moves (insofar as they are useful) will tend to recombine in ways that exploit this fact-about-reality, despite how none of the individual abstract moves look deceptive in isolation. Investigating a made-up but moderately concrete story Suppose you have a nascent AGI, and you've been training against all hints of deceptiveness. What goes wrong? When I ask this question of people who are optimistic that we can just "train AIs not to be deceptive", there are a few answers that seem well-known. Episode Description:Why We Need a More Integrative Approach to Trauma in Our Theology discusses how theology, churches, and Christian teachings often fail to address trauma properly. We can see how the realities of trauma have been integrated into literature, art, history, and music as ways to express and heal trauma. However, while not all theology does this, some theology dismisses trauma or claims that you can heal through traditional modalities alone, and if you don't, it's your fault and you're not trying hard enough. If you've been told this, this can be re-traumatizing, and it simply isn't true. Witnessing and validating trauma is a more realistic approach to dealing with trauma. By having a more integrative approach to our faith and theology, including the realities of trauma into our practices, integrating our healing practice in with our faith and theology, and acknowledging how trauma works in conjunction with our faith, we can take a more integrative and holistic approach to trauma that allows our relationship with Christ to heal us and change our lives. Breakdown of Episode: 1:18 Intro to Topic 3:47 Why You Can't Simplify Trauma and Put It in a Box9:46 Why It's Important We Integrate the Complexity of Trauma into Our Approach to Theology and Scripture17:57 Why an Integrative and Holistic Approach to Trauma in Your Life and in Our Theology is the Answer to Healing TraumaBulleted List of Resources"How Christian Theology and Practice Are Being Shaped by Trauma Studies" in Christian Century, by Sheila Rambo https://www.christiancentury.org/article/critical-essay/how-christian-theology-and-practice-are-being-shaped-trauma-studies This article discusses how trauma is integrated into our culture, art, literature, and history in many rich ways to help those who've experienced move through it and heal. However, theology doesn't always address the realities of trauma and integrating the realities of what has happened into human life. Our theology doesn't always address the complex and messy nature of trauma. By addressing the realities of trauma in our theology and using a more integrating approach to heal trauma, we can make progress toward individual and cultural healing of trauma. What do pop quizzes, cognitive science, and Francis Bacon have in common? It's all about the Fluency Illusion! Whether or not you've heard of the term - we guarantee you're familiar with the phenomenon. In short, the Fluency Illusion is the cognitive process that can lead learners to overestimate how much of the learning material they truly understand. It's a problem for language learning because it leads students to believe they can actively produce something in the target language just because they can passively understand it during comprehension. The solution to overcoming this problem lies in active learning strategies. If that's what you came for, then keep listening! In this episode of Adventures in Language, we will be dropping some knowledge about the Fluency Illusion and how teachers can help their learners overcome the it. Looking for some more information about how the Mango app helps learners sidestep the Fluency illusion? For a fun, easy read that summarizes the takeaways of how we learn - check out Ben Carey's 2015 book entitled How we learn: The surprising truth about when, where, and why it happens. Chapter 5 (titled The Hidden Value of Ignorance: the Many Dimensions of Testing) is of particular relevance to this episode. We highly recommend this read because Carey writes in a way that's clearly well-researched but accessible and free of jargon. He does a great job of sprinkling in engaging reviews of the experiments that laid the foundation for how we know what we know about how learning happens in the brain. A good paper to share with your students that illustrates the “testing effect” is Roediger III, H. L., & Karpicke, J. D. (2006). OverviewJoe and Matt, owners of an Amazon advertising agency called Ad Advance, are obsessed over finding the most effective Amazon advertising strategies and building a system around them. In this episode, we provide a brief overview of the different Amazon advertising types and how you can use them, success stories about how sellers who took their businesses to the next level, and what to expect from our podcast series. Key TakeawaysSponsored Product ads generate the vast majority of impressions, so this is a great place to start for new sellers or businesses entering the Amazon space looking to launch auto and manual campaigns. Once you're brand registered, you should start running Sponsored Brand ads, especially Sponsored Brand Video ads. These ads take up a lot of real estate in search results and allow you to showcase your product in a unique light. Sponsored Display ads are an interesting ad type with two different forms. They provide sellers with the opportunity to re-expose their products to shoppers off Amazon or on-site while viewing similar or complementary products. Understanding the Different Amazon Advertising TypesSponsored Products: Sponsored Product ads generate a lot of impressions in Amazon Advertising. They appear in search results, at top of search (the first row), and in the rest of the search results. They are also sprinkled in with organic listings, appear on product pages, and most notably below the product description. On the product page, there is a carousel of related Sponsored Products that could be viable alternatives. Sponsored Brands: After Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands would be the next ad type to launch once you're brand registered. The classic Sponsored Brand placement would be the banner ad that typically showcases three products at the top of search results. With Sponsored Brands, you can also showcase a storefront and get more creative. There is a tagline for the copy, and you can even include custom images, lifestyle images, or product images. Our favorite brand ad type would be Sponsored Brands Video, because it takes up a large space in search results and achieves excellent conversion rates. People are naturally drawn to videos, so if you have the assets, don't forget to use them! Sponsored Display Ads: There are two forms of display ads: audience targeting and product targeting. Audience targeting is off-site remarketing, where you are targeting an audience off Amazon, while product targeting is shown on Amazon on similar or complementary product pages. This ad type has good visual and is usually not as competitive as other ad types. Amazon Demand-side Platform (DSP): This ad type is like Sponsored Display with its off-site remarketing but has more control where you can specify audience attributes such as demographics, geographic data, and much more. Once your product or group of products have 5,000 plus sessions per month, DSP is a great ad type to add to your arsenal. Today’s question: Today’s question comes from from Chris. I’ve seen advice that said I should find leads by cold emailing the founders or CEOs of companies that may be interested in our product. I’ve also heard that I could use LinkedIn to find leads. Is cold emailing the best or most used strategy? Jake’s answer: I honestly love the idea of doing cold advertising or emailing for any business. Whether that’s Facebook or Google ads to cold audiences or sending emails to cold audiences, I really enjoy it. Cold Email Outreach This is no fun and the return rate is going to be low. We’ve seen two tactics that we’ll discuss. The first tactic is taking a quantity over quality tactic. Basically, you want to get the emails of as many people as possible and send them all the same sequence of emails and hope you get qualified leads. You aren’t personalizing anything, you are just sending out many of the same canned emails. It’s a numbers game. The other approach is quality over quantity. In this situation, you would segment that list down and personalize the communication to them including a personalized first email in the sequence, a personalized subject line, etc. The way I would make that decision depends on what you are selling. I generally lean on the quality over quantity because they have better engagement. You also avoid getting flagged as spam. There are some situations where you may want to send tons of emails. If your product has mass appeal or is something you can personalize the email sequence enough (all in one segment/demographic) then you might be able to get away with mass emailing. But it’s still a numbers game. So how can you get a better open and engagement rate with less emails? Optimize your Cold Email Outreach Some products we’ve used that can help you optimize your emails: Leadfuze - Allows you to find relevant people and personalize and automate email sequences. A good number of emails to send is 5-8. GrowLabs - Similar to LeadFuze, but they are a bit less customizable. CloseKit - If you have a list of companies you want to sell to, you can use their plugin to pull in specific people in the company and then automatically send out emails to them. Allows you to personalize at scale. Our Approach to Cold Emails Set aside an hour everyday to write personal emails to 10-20 prospective customers. I’m going to research them and write a highly personalized email. Then you can setup generic follow-ups in your sequence. This helps you get the most bang for your buck.
