Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar know through personal experience that having children is a profound blessing, despite societal messages that often portray them as inconveniences. Many people today grant children excessive freedom when they are young, which can lead to poor decision-making in adulthood. It's essential for parents to appreciate the sweetness of raising children in the Lord, giving guidance when children are young so when they are older they love the Lord. To prepare children for the world, they need a spiritual foundation and a grasp of the basics. This is achieved through knowing the scripture, praying, and attending church. The trend of worshiping online, exacerbated by Covid, needs to be reconsidered; physical attendance and active service in church are vital. From day one, parents are preparing to send their children out into the world. Oscar mentions not shielding his kids but discussing and dissecting the lies the world presents so they can discern truth as they grow.Parents must remind their children why they exist and cultivate their hearts for the gospel. Demonstrating the gospel shows children they don't measure up on their own. Parents are called to imitate Christ and impart that to their kids. It's important to patiently teach them the words of Jesus. When they feel the power of sin, it will bring them back to the foot of the cross. Teach children to be open to direction and instruction. Ignoring correction leads to destruction. We should reflect on criticism rather than react impulsively. Sin is rooted in idolatry, and when our idols are challenged, it reveals the true state of our hearts. The guys talk through some of the key things Christian parents need to instill in their children. Christians should know that work is sacred and they must be hard workers. Encourage children to immerse themselves in Proverbs. Teach them financial literacy, as schools often neglect practical skills like budgeting and balancing a checkbook. Open, honest discussions about money are crucial. Parents often feel uncomfortable discussing sex with their children, but it's essential to seize moments to speak life into them and address the heart of the matter. Emphasize the importance of keeping their word; if they commit to something, they must follow through.Lastly, parents should avoid treating their children as sanctifying trophies. Psalm 127 states that unless the Lord does the work, it is in vain. God is the one who raises children and sends them out for His purposes. Remember that ultimately salvation is in the Lord's hands.Send us a Text Message. Thanks for listening! On this episode of Tradeswork: The Rocky Mountain Mechanical Contractors Association Podcast, we welcome Jean Eddy, President & CEO of American Student Assistance (ASA), an organization that aspires to help students know themselves, know their options, and make informed decisions about their education and career goals early in life. Our overall objective is to build a generation of successful individuals who are confident, competent, and ready to realize the future they envision. A national non-profit, ASA has been pioneering solutions to help students for more than 60 years.  Jean is also the author of a book titled Crisis-Proofing Today's Learners: Reimagining Career Education to Prepare Kids for Tomorrow's World. The book is an informative guide – for parents, educators, policy makers, and business leaders – of the best way to prepare youth for post high school education and career success. Here are some of the questions you can expect to be answered on this episode: Who is the ASA, and what kind of work do they do?  Why is there a stigma around trade schools, community colleges and other forms of secondary educational opportunities? How early should we be exposing kids to different career options? Plumbers in Massachusetts make HOW MUCH? How do we continue to evolve the perception of what jobs in the skilled trades actually look like? What would an ideal high school experience look like to equip kids to better approach adulthood and their career? This episode is available on podcatchers everywhere. This episode features a conversation with Jean Eddy, CEO and President of American Student Assistance®. ASA is a national nonprofit changing the way kids learn about careers and prepare for their futures through equitable access to career readiness information and experiences. ASA helps middle and high school students to know themselves—their strengths and their interests—and understand their education and career options so that they can make informed decisions. The organization fulfills its mission – in schools and beyond the classroom—by providing free digital experiences directly to millions of students, and through advocacy, impact investing, thought leadership, and philanthropic support for educators, intermediaries, and others. ASA fosters a generation of confident, crisis-proof young people who are ready for whatever path comes next after high school.Jean is also the author of the new book, Crisis-Proofing Today's Learners: Reimagining Career Education to Prepare Kids for Tomorrow's World. It's a post-pandemic take on teaching and learning, advocating for approaches that build adaptive skills from a broader array of educational choices. In part one, Jean and Jason talk about how the current world in which youth are living influenced her thinking and reasons for writing the book, the people and partners she relied upon to share knowledge on what's effective in career education for adolescents, the importance of helping young people develop the skill of adaptability given the ever-changing world and marketplace of careers, examples from around the world where education is centered on self-discovery, and what employers, educators, parents can do to help young people develop their own pathways to career. In part two they talk about how to ensure the time young people are already dedicating to the digital space is maximized for their long-term benefit, the interest in skills-based hiring among employers, the interest among Gen Z youth in pathways to employment outside the typical higher education experience, and the challenges for both of them to make alternative pathways more mainstream. They look at where career education fits within the school day, what ASA is doing to directly help young people gain skills and experiences to identify and forge their pathways, and to influence systems across the country that can better institutionalize career education for all young people, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds and with special needs. In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Jean Eddy, president and CEO of American Student Assistance (ASA), to discuss the growing importance of putting kids on a career pathway early, which she explores in her book, Crisis-Proofing Today's Learners: Reimagining Career Education to Prepare Kids for Tomorrow's World. How do we prepare our kids for careers post high school? College? Apprenticeships? What is the best pathway for career exploration? These are important questions that Eddy says we all must take a role in answering. "(Teachers) put in an awful lot of time. They have an awful lot of things to deliver within a very short window. And now we are saying, okay, let's switch it up and let's do more. Let's figure out how to get career education exploration into all of what you already do. "Parents have got to be involved in this and help. Teachers have to basically put pressure on the systems that they're within. It's school departments. It's employers too, and policymakers. We have to understand that this is an issue that one person is not going to be able to fix, or one system is going to be able to fix." ASA is a national nonprofit that describes its mission as helping students know themselves, know their options, and make informed decisions about their education and career goals early in life. "Our overall objective is to build a generation of successful individuals who are confident, competent, and ready to realize the future they envision," according to ASA. Eddy shares details of the digital ecosystem of platforms the are helping kids start on their school-to-work journey beginning in middle school. "We have digital programs that are entirely free that kids can use to start the process. Our research shows that middle school is prime time to start with young people. And the first thing we need to help them figure out is who they are. What do they love to do? What are they good at? What do they get fun from? And use that to basically then go and see the number of careers that are possible by doing that. "If we have kids figure out what they love, what they're good at, what the world needs, and what they can be paid for, at the end of the day, they're going to have a successful future." In the podcast, we go into much more detail as to how we get students to that point where they understand what they want to do and how to do it. During Jean's tenure, ASA has pivoted from a 65-year history of helping students with college financing and repayment options to a new focus of helping students discover potential career paths earlier in their education journey. Jean Eddy, President and CEO of American Student Assistance (ASA) joins host Mike Palmer in a conversation about empowering students through career exploration beginning in middle school. Jean highlights the ideas touched on in her new book, Crisis-Proofing Today's Learners: Reimagining Career Education to Prepare Kids for Tomorrow's World. We learn Jean's professional origin story, having spent most of her career in higher education supporting young people, starting in financial aid and working her way up to chief operating officer at a university before joining ASA. From there, we hear how ASA has pivoted its mission to get ahead of student debt issues by working with younger students (middle schoolers) on career exploration. Research has shown middle school is the best time to help students discover their interests and talents, then explore related careers and college options before the higher-pressure scenarios of high school. ASA uses digital platforms like its Futurescape and TikTok to engage millions of students each year in fun, relevant career-based learning.   Jean advocates starting career conversations early, arming students with adaptable skills like communication and problem-solving, and exposing them to diverse, non-traditional pathways beyond the “college for all” mindset. With the right preparation and support, more students can find fulfilling futures that align with the evolving needs of our economy and society. Jean brings an empathetic, human-centered approach to empowering today's learners while challenging education to reimagine how it prepares students for tomorrow's world.
