If today's guest looks familiar to you, that might be because you've previously seen Rabbi Evan Moffic on Fox News or CNN, where he is frequently called in for commentary and analysis on events in the news. But here's something you probably didn't know: Rabbi Moffic is also a copywriter! He's a former mentoring client of mine. I'm proud of the work we did together and where he's taken it, and I've gotta tell you: He has found uses for what he learned in copywriting in places I've never heard of copywriting being useful, or even thought of before! Evan is the senior rabbi at Makom Solel Lakeside, a 600-family synagogue in the Chicago suburbs. A Stanford graduate, he's also an popular speaker at churches, where his goal is to bring the value of Jewish learnings to as many people as possible. Evan has written several books, including ‘What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Jewishness of Jesus' and ‘What Every Christian Needs to Know About Passover.' His latest book is about anti-semitism. But today, Evan has agreed to talk about the role of copywriting inside and outside of business and religion. I really enjoy the way he looks at copywriting, and I know you will, too. Evan started by telling us how new things he learned about copywriting helped him write the most effective fundraising letter ever for his congregation! But for him, copywriting has had a much more wide-ranging impact. It has, in fact, changed his overall approach to persuasion, and even modified his perspective on human nature as a whole. Part of his work as a rabbi is to counsel members of his congregation, when they request it. And, as mentioned before, Evan speaks all over the country to Christians about The Old Testament and other Jewish topics. He's a welcome speaker at these events — he only goes where he's invited! — but there are opportunities to use to tools of copywriting to help make his concepts easier to understand and accept. As a writer, Evan has used copywriting not only in emails — as you would expect — but also in his books. And, as the father of two very bright daughters, he's found copywriting comes in handy in family conversations. This is an unusual podcast today in that I can't remember anyone on the show who has taken such a universal approach to copywriting — or, at least, talked with us about it. You can find out more about Evan on his substack: rabbi.substack.com Download.

Your host for this podcast is Doug Utberg, the founder and principal consultant for Business of Life, LLC. Doug: In the city of Chicago Evan Moffic is a rabbi but also an associate of mine. Ivan, how are you doing? Evan: I'm doing great, Doug. It's wonderful to be on the podcast and, you know, talk about some of the amazing work you're doing. Doug: Oh, thank you appreciate that. Well, so actually, but Evan, of course, what I'd like to do today is to talk about you, I know you have a, you have a pretty significant social mission that you've been serving with your synagogue. And one of the things that I like to bring to my listeners on the podcast, is just different views, you know, kind of views from different parts of life, the, you know, just the things that make everybody unique, the anti mainstream view of life in America, you might say ,so yeah, take it away. Evan: Well, you know, I guess, what we do is just try to serve the Jewish community and try to serve the community more broadly, really, just trying to be with people in important moments, you know, when people are, you know, getting surgery or experiencing illness, visiting with them, highlighting some of the work that our congregants do in the community, you know, working at soup kitchens, and, you know, fighting gun violence, we just have a lot of, you know, we have a strong social mission to really kind of make a difference in the community and be with people in their most important moments. Doug: Yeah. Evan: And it varies, it changes all the time. Sometimes it's, sometimes I've got, you know, a lot of tutoring lined up for the day. And another day, it's, you know, funerals. Doug: Yeah. Evan: So it kind of varies, but all of it centers around just serving people. Doug: Well, and I'd love to hear your fear. How's COVID impacted all this, just because I've, you know, what I've observed is that a lot of people are going through quite a bit of social isolation. And in theory, a religious community would have to be an outlet valve for that. But for example, where I'm at, there's a state puts pretty strict headcount limitations on worship service. And, you know, attending a zoom worship service isn't really the same thing. And not being able to socialize after worship service still isn't really the same thing. So kind of what's your observation on how people are hoping long term impacts are going to be? Evan: It's a great question, and the long term impacts are getting harder to predict. But I can tell you that I'm much more optimistic now than I was at the beginning. Doug: I think to here. Evan: it is, you know, because I saw people really came together. Of course, zoom is not nearly as good as being together in person. But what it has done, is it to allow people to connect, and to participate in worship, without the without having to get out of their homes and go to the synagogue. And that's hard. I mean, we have a lot of older people. I mean, that's, that's true in every most mainline religious communities right now, is it there aren't as many young people as we wish there were. And this has made it easier for people to participate in worship, of course, not participation at the highest level, but its participation in some way. Doug: Yeah. Evan: And we've been a lifeline. I mean, people in my community have...

Jason Hartman and Rabbi Evan Moffic talk about the big migration out of high density areas. Starting in 2016 a trend of moving to low density areas started to grow and the pandemic has encouraged the departure from more densely populated areas. While these trends may rely heavily on the wants and needs of Generation Z, health issues and worker experiences might speed up the migration. Key Takeaways: [4:00] Pandemic proved how densely we are living, and also how successfully you can live working remotely [7:00] Starting in 2016, a trend of non-metropolitan counties were gaining population more-so than metropolitan counties [9:45] A lot of the migration trends could depend a lot on Generation Z [13:00] What led you to believe that this mass migration to lower density living would occur? [16:40] The average population density (APD) of the U.S.A. is only 87 people per square mile [17:28] The APD of metropolitan areas of the U.S.A. is 283 people per square mile, and the APD of New York City is 27,000 people per square mile [21:30] The rise of socialism [25:30] “Expansions make millionaires, recessions and depressions make billionaires” [26:20] “In a recession or a depression, the person who wins is the person who loses the least” Websites: 1-800-Hartman www.JasonHartman.com Jason Hartman Quick Start Jason Hartman PropertyCast (Libsyn) Jason Hartman PropertyCast (iTunes) Jason Hartman's Blogcast www.RabbiMoffic.com

How do we use the Enneagram to honor our differences? First, we have to be willing to look at our own story and bravely explore our own dark side. One of the beauties of the Enneagram is that it helps us become more self-aware, to own our dark side, and to begin to live with more compassion and appreciation for difference. When we truly understand the Enneagram we see that one type is not better than another. Each type is different and that difference enriches us. But if we’re afraid to look into our shadow side, our dark side, the shadow side of us can take forms of discrimination, and we're all guilty of it in one way or another. In today’s show, we invited Rabbi Evan Moffic to join us again to talk about how a lack of appreciation of differences, or even indifference, can foster an environment of antisemitism and discrimination of all types, and what we can do to begin to unwind or reverse the momentum of antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. About Rabbi Evan Moffic Rabbi Evan Moffic is a renowned author and Jewish scholar. He’s a high honors graduate of Stanford University and the youngest rabbi of a major congregation in the United States. He is an Enneagram three, AKA the performer, and loves and uses the Enneagram to support his own journey toward personal transformation, and as a tool in his work with other people, as well.
My guest is Rabbi Evan Moffic. His newest book is First the Jews: Combating the World’s Longest-Running Hate Campaign. (https://www.amazon.com/First-Jews-Combating-Longest-Running-Campaign/dp/1501870831/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=First+The+Jews&qid=1552353394&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1) News reports of and statistics about defaced synagogues and death threats against community centers are on the rise around the world. A rise in anti-Semitism from the right side of the political spectrum has been accompanied by a different kind of anti-Semitism from parts of the left revolving around the state of Israel. Rabbi Evan Moffic provides a compelling discussion to help Christians understand this dangerous rise by working to address tough questions including: Why have Jews been the object of the most enduring and universal hatred in history? What is different between anti-Semitism in the past versus today’s culture? How, and in what forms, may it be carried out in the future? Focusing on the events since September 11, 2001, Rabbi Evan Moffic considers the twenty-first century anti-Semitism and the historical pattern of discrimination to other groups that often follows new waves of discrimination against Jewish communities. With a hopeful and collaborative tone, he suggests actions for all people of faith to combat words and actions of hate while lifting up practical ways Christians and Jews can work together. First the Jews offers new insights and unparalleled perspectives on some of the most recent, pressing developments in the contemporary world. Special Guest: Evan Moffic.

Rabbi Evan Moffic became the youngest senior rabbi of a large synagogue in the United States, at the age of 31. He has just released his new book, “The Happiness Prayer” – Ancient Jewish Wisdom for the Best Way to Live Today. It is derived from a literal prayer recited and sung during Jewish worship, handed down from rabbis 2,000 years ago. What’s interesting is Rabbi Moffic showcases this “prayer” is just as relevant regardless of your faith, or if you even claim faith. Which in essence makes it as much cognitive training, as it might be a prayer. We dig into why “happiness” is such a big topic today and what causes our happiness to erode. The meat of the interview is in the latter half where we dissect the 10 point of structure that cause or hamper happiness. It’s not a formula per se, but it lists out the ingredients that make or break happiness in a format we can work through and address and apply in our own lives. I'm not kidding when I say Enneagram Nines (The Peacemakers) are well represented in my universe of relationships. My wife Anne is a Nine. My daughter Maddie is a Nine, and as you'll soon learn, a disproportionate number of my friends are Nines as well. On this week's show we decided to try something new. We invited not one but a panel of FOUR Enneagram Nines into the studio to describe what it's like to be members of the Peacemaker tribe. Why host a panel? In my experience, people learn more about different Enneagram types when they hear people who self-identify as that type talk about their lives. Why listen to me talk about a type when you can hear from folks who live it everyday? This week you'll meet four of my closest friends—Singer-songwriter Andy Gullahorn, guitarist, businessman, (and five time Grammy nominee) Randy Williams, Sobriety Coach and counselor David Hampton, and Chris Gonzalez, PhD, a Marriage and Family Therapist, and Director of the MFT program at Lipscomb University. We honestly didn't know what would happen when we stuffed me, my guest co-host Rabbi Evan Moffic, my producer Chad Michael Snavely, and four others guys into our tiny recording studio with a six pack of beer but as you'll soon hear -- it was magic. This is one of the most entertaining and enlightening shows I've ever been a part of. My panel today happens to be all men, but we've already scheduled a panel of four women to be on the show in the next few weeks and a mixed gender panel as well, so keep your eyes and ears open for those shows! Can you pursue a life of success and enjoy a growing sense of 'shalom'--the Hebrew word for a sense of inner harmony, wholeness, and ultimate well-being we all long to experience? Listen into my conversation with Rabbi Evan Moffic, a renowned author, Jewish scholar, and Enneagram Three (AKA The Performer). A high honors graduate of Stanford University and the youngest rabbi of a major Jewish congregation in the United States, Rabbi Moffic loves and uses the Enneagram to support his own journey toward personal transformation and as a tool in his work with others as well. From beginning to end, this is one of the richest conversations I've ever had about the Enneagram and spiritual transformation. This episode is for everybody, regardless of spiritual background or worldview. If for some reason you're short on time this week please, please, please skip forward to 24:58 and listen through to the end of the show. You won't be disappointed! Rabbi Moffic's book, What Every Christian Needs to Know About the Jewishness of Jesus was a 2015 best-seller, and his upcoming book—The Happiness Prayer: Ancient Jewish Wisdom for the Best Way to Live Today reveals an ancient Jewish prayer whose teachings open the door to happiness and meaning for people of all faiths.
