The new solo play “Precipice” was conceived by actor and self-described “memory activist” Damaris Webb. It’s part of the offerings of the Vanport Mosaic Festival she co-founded 10 years ago. The play, like the festival itself, centers on remembering and reclaiming history and telling the stories of people who have been marginalized or forgotten. We talk with Webb and playwright Chris Gonzalez about this new work and what they hope audiences take from it.
Thornton Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard suffered a major blow as the court rejected her ballot lawsuit, effectively limiting her ability to influence key appointments before her term's end. Henyard, who skipped the township meeting, faced resistance from trustees Chris Gonzalez and Carmen Carlile, who strategically avoided previous meetings to block her attempts to install allies. Ultimately, Stephanie Weedman, a community figure with over 20 years of service, was appointed interim trustee amidst widespread support. This decision marks a turning point for the township, addressing months of political gridlock that left public services stalled, including unpaid insurance and halted bus operations. While Henyard's tenure has been mired in controversy and allegations of mismanagement, Weedman's appointment is seen as a step toward restoring accountability and functionality. This outcome signals a rejection of unchecked political power and a demand for fiscal conservatism and community-focused governance.
Tensions in Thornton Township have reached a boiling point as trustees Chris Gonzalez and Carmen Carlile announced they would boycott a key board meeting called by Supervisor Tiffany Henyard. This decision stems from disputes over lapses in the township's insurance policies, which have halted critical operations and left residents vulnerable. Henyard, accused of withholding vital information and attempting to manipulate the board's composition, faces mounting criticism. The trustees highlighted Henyard's failure to resolve liability insurance issues and her alleged political maneuvers to secure board dominance. Without insurance coverage, the township remains exposed to lawsuits, further complicating governance. Trustees have demanded accountability and transparency but remain at an impasse with Henyard's administration. Meanwhile, township services are paralyzed, leaving residents in limbo as political gridlock escalates. The controversy underscores concerns about governance, accountability, and fiscal responsibility within Thornton Township.
It's that time of year again: our annual holiday episode, where we invite several members of the Barrelhouse editorial team to read and discuss a very sexy holiday-themed novel. This year's book is SKRUJ: Holidate with an Alien, by bestselling author Honey Phillips. The book is a retelling, of a sort, of the Dickens Christmas classic, but starring a grumpy alien man with a weird (and gigantic) penis, and his human lover. Our guests this year include: Chris Gonzalez, Becky Barnard, Dave Housley, Erin Fitzgerald, and first-timer Christina Beasley. Plus our regular hosts, Mike Ingram and Tom McAllister. Note: This will be the last episode of the podcast on the regular feed for a spell, while we work on our next season. But we'll continue to post new episodes for our Patreon subscribers: for $5/month, you can get those episodes, plus access to our entire back catalog. https://www.patreon.com/c/bookfight Thanks for listening, and happy holidays!
A standoff brewed Tuesday night before community members were even allowed into the Thornton Township board meeting. “I just don't see why it has to be a struggle,” said Chris Gonzalez, one of Thornton Township's trustees. Gonzalez insisted on holding the meeting in a downstairs room that he said has more exits and can accommodate more people. Safety was his top worry amid escalating tensions that have developed at the township's board meetings. He and Carmen Carlisle didn't attend the last board of trustees meeting over those same concerns, effectively cancelling the meeting.
Chris and I chat about the different attitudes in civilian and defense sectors, AI, use cases, entrepreneurship and more!
Thornton Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard was the only one to show up for a scheduled meeting of the board of trustees Tuesday night—with others saying they are worried for their own safety. The most notable difference at the Tuesday night meeting was that everyone entering the township building in South Holland had to go through security. It is because of lack of security that the trustees opted to not attend Tuesday night—leaving Henyard to make her own address about a variety of topics. Henyard entered the room to a nearly vacant board table. She gave the clerk a hug, but every other seat next to them was vacant. "Due to the fact that we do not have a quorum, there will not be an actual voting meeting," Henyard said. The reason the trustees did not show up, they argue, is due to meetings that have gotten out of control. "It was about to get physical," trustee Chris Gonzalez said of a recent meeting.
Thornton Township trustees Carmen Carlisle and Chris Gonzalez have blocked funding for local services, citing persistent transparency issues with Supervisor Tiffany Henyard's administration. The trustees expressed concerns over unapproved spending and the failure to provide necessary invoices and statements, leading to a standoff with Henyard, who also serves as the mayor of Dolton. The dispute reflects deeper issues of accountability and governance within the township, as trustees aim to implement ordinances for responsible spending. Henyard's administration denies any wrongdoing and accuses trustees of political maneuvering, highlighting ongoing tensions over fiscal management.

It's a fan favorite every year: we choose a (possibly terrible) Christmas novel, and we invite some of our fellow Barrelhouse editors on to discuss it. This year the book was A Christmas Memory, by the "king of Christmas fiction," Richard Paul Evans. And our guests include Dave Housley, Becky Barnard, Chris Gonzalez, and Joe Killiany! Is this book a heartwarming autobiographical tale about a young boy's friendship with an old African-American man in late-1960s Utah? Or is it the story of a little incel boy who will eventually grow up to found a creepy men's rights organization and compare the plight of white men to Jews in Nazi Germany? Every year we try to take a "fun" trip to Christmas Town, and every year we somehow wind up mired in a terrible shit show. Feliz Navidad!

With fewer sweeps during the pandemic, encampments have become a seemingly permanent fixture in many parts of Portland. And in response, city officials have started taking a more hardline approach. In February, Mayor Ted Wheeler issued an emergency order to ban camping near busy roadways. He has also said he plans to create large outdoor sites for sanctioned camping. On “Think Out Loud” we’ve heard from service providers, policy makers, and elected officials, including the mayor. We also wanted to hear from people who are living on the streets. So, on a chilly and rainy March day, host Dave Miller, producer Julie Sabatier and OPB’s emerging journalism fellow, Chris Gonzalez, went to Old Town and an area near Delta Park in North Portland to interview folks living in tents or shelters or cars. This wasn’t comprehensive, or scientific. It’s a snapshot of homelessness on one Spring day in Portland.

Welcome to the final regular season episode of "Class Reunion: The Podcast"! In this episode, I have a conversation with Debbie Zamparelli, now Debbie Howard, who was one of the folks who attended our in-person reunion in September 2021. We ended up hitting it off, striking up a friendship we didn't have when we were teens. When we sat around the campfire later that night and she started telling me some of her story about growing up in Aurora, I asked if she'd come on the podcast and tell it instead. I'm so glad she said yes. This conversation is the only podcast interview that I recorded after the reunion in Aurora, Missouri, but that's not the only reason I decided to make it the finale. Debbie's experience of moving into a foster home at age 12, getting her first job at 14 and having a baby a week after graduation is only where the story begins, not where it ends. She is now a real estate closing specialist in Searcy, Arkansas, who has raised five children over the past 20 years. Her youngest still lives at home, and she's taking college classes for the first time. It was so special to talk with Debbie for this final episode of this first season of the show. We cover a lot of ground and I end the episode with some thoughts about what making this show has taught me about the concepts of "hometown" and "community." I have at least one bonus episode that I'll surprise you with soon, so stay tuned on Patreon.com.com/classreunionpodcast if you want to support future seasons of the show. Thanks to sponsors Advanced Eyecare Kansas City, Aurora Professional Pharmacy, Bill Baker and the Classes of 1972 and 1975 for their support of the show. I'm also grateful to Patreon subscribers who chip in a few bucks each month to help cover production costs, like the website and the episode donations. Each week, the classmate featured in the show picks an organization or non-profit, and I make a donation on behalf of the class and this show. This week, that donation is going to Virginia Gaston's For the Kids, an organization founded by Debbie's foster mom to help other foster kids in Southwest Missouri. This is the third donation to For the Kids this season. If you want to support the group, follow them on Facebook. Thanks to podcast supporters and sponsors, we've donated nearly $500 to Southwest Missouri nonprofits through this show. An extra thanks to Chris Gonzalez, Alyssa Vidales, Chandler Hoefle, Sis Broyles, Chris and Betsy Cook, Robin and Manuel Beltrán, Dani Johnson and Frank Curry for their encouragement and production support.
