Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 17, 2025 is: uncouth un-KOOTH adjective Uncouth describes things, such as language or behavior, that are impolite or socially unacceptable. A person may also be described as uncouth if they are behaving in a rude way. // Stacy realized it would be uncouth to show up to the party without a gift, so she picked up a bottle of wine on the way. See the entry > Examples: “Perhaps people deride those who buy books solely for how they look because it reminds them that despite their primary love of literature, they still appreciate a beautiful cover. It's not of primary importance but liking how something looks in your home matters to some extent, even if it feels uncouth to acknowledge.” — Chiara Dello Joio, LitHub.com, 24 Jan. 2023 Did you know? Old English speakers used the word cūth to describe things that were familiar to them, and uncūth for the strange and mysterious. These words passed through Middle English into modern English with different spellings but the same meanings. While couth eventually dropped out of use, uncouth soldiered on. In Captain Singleton by English novelist Daniel Defoe, for example, the author refers to “a strange noise more uncouth than any they had ever heard,” while Shakespeare wrote of an “uncouth forest” in As You Like It. This “unfamiliar” sense of uncouth, however, joined couth in becoming, well, unfamiliar to most English users, giving way to the now-common meanings, “rude” and “lacking polish or grace.” The adjective couth in use today, meaning “sophisticated” or “polished,” arose at the turn of the 20th century, not from the earlier couth, but as a back-formation of uncouth, joining the ranks of other “uncommon opposites” such as kempt and gruntled.
Adapted in a light-hearted, comical style from a diverse set of genuine Medieval Arthurian Romances, this special Three Ravens retelling of the iconic 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is our bonus miniseries for Advent 2024.Split into 25 parts, one for each day of December leading up to and including Christmas Day, the tale follows Gawain, a young knight in King Arthur's court who embarks on a rambling quest, packed with adventures, which takes him all around ancient Britain - a journey which begins at one Midwinter feast and ends at another, exactly one year later. In this chapter, based on the poem Gawain and the Carle of Carlisle, our hero meets up with two old friends, Sir Kay and Sir Baldwin, and pays a visit to a rowdy half-giant. Faced with a Redcap steward, bouts of extraordinary flatulence, and yet more tests of his chivalry, can Gawain keep his head under pressure, or sever that of Lugus The Uncouth? The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 12, 2022 is: uncouth un-KOOTH adjective Uncouth means "behaving in a rude way" or "not polite or socially acceptable." // Stacy realized it would be uncouth to show up to the party without a gift, so she picked up a bottle of wine on the way. See the entry > Examples: "The Senate president had the power to call the vote at any time and end debate, but custom, courtesy, and precedent prevented such an uncouth step." — The Journal-Advocate (Sterling, Colorado), 24 Jan. 2022 Did you know? Uncouth comes from Old English cūth, meaning "familiar" or "known," prefixed by un-, giving the meaning "unfamiliar." How did a word that meant "unfamiliar" come to mean "outlandish," "rugged," or "rude"? Some examples from literature illustrate that the transition happened quite naturally. In Captain Singleton, Daniel Defoe refers to "a strange noise more uncouth than any they had ever heard." In William Shakespeare's As You Like It, Orlando tells Adam, "If this uncouth forest yield anything savage, I will either be food for it or bring it for food to thee." In Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane fears "to look over his shoulder, lest he should behold some uncouth being tramping close behind him!" So, that which is unfamiliar is often perceived as strange, wild, or unpleasant. Meanings such as "outlandish," "rugged," or "rude" naturally follow.

Here we are again, folks, with another "We Review the Reviews!" This time we review the reviews of "Purity in Death!" So many BS reviews for this book! We start out with another reviewer who didn't like the book, so therefore they question whether Nora Roberts actually wrote the book. Then there's the reviewer who felt that Nora "made social commentary throughout that was either annoying or incredibly bigoted." We really wish people would give us examples of what they feel is annoying and bigoted. Next, a review that feels the book was a "techno-babble bore" and that it copied the movie "Star Chamber." Although, vigilante movies have been around since movies existed, so, "Star Chamber" didn't invent that genre. Just visit the page on Wikipedia that lists all the vigilante movies that have been made. There's a really pretentious a-hole who writes a really long review about how bad they feel Nora's "mushy, irritating" and writing is. "Purity" in their opinion, is "lame, "boring," and "tiring" with "...very poor plot line, character growth or mystery." Plus, TWO SIMILIES IN ONE SENTENCE?? HOW DARE SHE!!?? Here's some more things we learn about this book in this episode: there is a graphic sex scene in this book. Eve's tragic backstory is leaned on gratuitously in this series. Also there's this thing about a dog that's supposed to be funny but is gross. Roarke is pushy and arrogant Eve just grumped and snarled her way through the book at everyone Eve's never in her own office Eve is starting to resemble Anita from LKH's series Eve is "overly arrogant, abrasive, a bully and uncouth" Eve isn't really solving her own cases "legally," she needs to use Roarke and do it by crossing that line Obviously, since there are no guns with bullets, the right to bear arms for Americans has been taken away On the good side, some reviewers really loved this book and the series in general, not to mention Susan Ericksen and we LOVE those reviews.

Three minutes into the performance, and I stifled a yawn. Crammed in the front row with a clutch of fellow bored hacks, I hoped no one had noticed. However, the acclaimed actor and playwright and recently appointed head of NATS, Barry Lazarus, turned and fixed a beady eye on me from centre stage. The Performance is a short story from the Tall And True writers’ website, written and narrated by Robert Fairhead. At the end of the episode, Robert provides an insight into the story, which he wrote for Furious Fiction in February 2021.The show notes include links to The Performance on Tall And True and the podcast's theme music and sound effects.Support the podcast: supporter.acast.com/tall-and-true-short-readsWriter's Insight into The PerformanceI wrote The Performance in February 2021 for the Australian Writers' Centre's monthly 500-word short story competition, Furious Fiction. The story had to:• Take place in a SCHOOL• Begin with the word THREE• And include the adjectives: MAGNETIC, UNCOUTH, SUSPICIOUS, and FLOWERY.The definition of SCHOOL was flexible. It could be an educational institution, a school of thought, or a school of fish.I toyed with the latter idea for a while, beginning a draft story with “Three fathoms down”. But then I switched to something sci-fi-ish, with “Three parsecs out”.And by a circuitous route, which I can’t explain, this led me to write the line, “Three minutes into the performance”. I had small parts in amateur plays when I lived in England. And I know there’s nothing worse than being caught yawning by a director during a rehearsal. I've also seen powerful performances on the stage that have shaken me awake.Suddenly, I had my story set at the National Arts and Theatre School. The school is rehearsing its first performance under the stewardship of the acclaimed actor and playwright Barry Lazarus. A young (caffeine-deprived) journalist draws the short straw to cover the dress rehearsal. And Lazarus spots him yawning in the front row. He invites the journalist to read a part in the play and see beyond its soporific beginning. As for the adjectives, I trust you didn't yawn and miss them in the story?I hope you enjoyed The Performance, like the student actors and hacks. “‘He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.’ It just wouldn’t have the same ring to it if it was a pigeon flapping over to sit on his head. It was, of course, a pigeon. Pigeons and doves, are, after all, members of the same family. The species we call the ‘common pigeon’ is the same as the ‘rock dove.’ It’s just that, in our culture, we think of pigeons as being kind of grimy. Uncouth. ‘Flying rats.’ But doves! Oh, doves! So beautiful, so intelligent! …I say all this because I think we often look at our lives and see pigeons where we ought to see doves. We feel the Spirit of God whooshing towards us and we cower and run, covering our heads with our handbags and ducking under an awning.”

Angela has a family meeting with the orphanage she's running and lays down the rules for when MIKOL aka Papa MIKOL aka the PAPA MIKOL OF DA HOUSE WHO IS IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE, joins them in the distant future, once his visa is approved. Natalie drags LAWWWVE (Mike) to church to try and save him from his belief in an intelligent alien life-force. Anna is ready to PARRRRRRRRRTAY in her Bridesmaids moment as an infamous Nebraskan drinker, but ends up getting a shot of reality that things aren't going that well with Mursel.
