The increasing integration of oral healthcare with medical care could lead to a reconsideration of roles and responsibilities on care teams in both fields. That's just one of the emerging trends in oral healthcare we explore on this episode of Raise the Line with guests Laura Skarnulis, CEO of the Dental Assisting National Board and the DALE Foundation, and Ann Battrell, CEO of the American Dental Hygienists Association. Both agree this trend, among others, is making oral healthcare an increasingly dynamic field of employment. “There are so many opportunities, pathways, jobs, and environments in which to work,” says Skarnulis. “People can make all different kinds of choices today that never had been there before,” Battrell adds. There is also an ongoing need for both dental assistants and dental hygienists, with the supply in both roles declining during the pandemic due to retirements and other factors. In their informative conversation with host Shiv Gaglani, these industry experts also dive into issues surrounding scope of practice, the benefits of having diversified experiences throughout one's career and why it's important to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable” to maximize professional and personal growth.

Go here to take the test and get your free CE Credit!     EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:   Inspired by an article in Dentistry IQ regarding a popular misconception about CPT codes, Michelle and Andrew have invited two experts in the coding field to the podcast today to set the record straight. Teresa Duncan is a speaker and writer with over 20 years experience in healthcare whose expertise includes proven accounts receivable and insurance methods, and helping doctors and managers establish solid management systems. A recipient of the Educator of the Year Award by the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries, Teresa is also an author and a frequent contributor to a variety of publications.  She has been named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry by Dental Products Report Magazine, and is recognized yearly as a Leader in Consulting by Dentistry Today. Jamie Collins, RDH-EA,BS, is a clinical practicing hygienist who has been in the dental field for twenty years. In addition to clinical practice Jamie is also an educator, has contributed to multiple textbooks, curriculum development and creation, and contributes as a key opinion leader with multiple companies. She is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists Association, a member of the Dental Codeology Consortium Committee for dental coding, and a colleague of Michelle's at MouthWatch.   In today's episode, our hosts and guests discuss CDT codes in general, where dentistry has gone wrong in coding, the ADA and carriers, and the new staging and grading and which codes may apply there. They also delve into diagnosis coding, internal/unspecified codes and tracking, outcomes based payments, code 4346 and 4355 usage, the importance of educating consumers, and some code suggestions from our experts for particular scenarios. They finish up by looking at developments in coding, our experts' takeaways for listeners, and the issue with assigning codes to products.     Interview starts: 4:32         CDT codes   Where dentistry has gone wrong in coding   The ADA and carriers   The new staging and grading and codes   Diagnosis coding   Internal/unspecified codes and tracking   Outcomes based payment   Code 4346 and 4355 usage   Educating consumers   Code suggestions for particular scenarios   Developments in coding   Takeaways for listeners regarding coding   Assigning codes to products     QUOTES:    “There's so many offices that code for what they think that they're going to get reimbursed for, rather than coding for the procedures that are actually performed.”   “Dental offices don't want to lose patients, they still want the revenue so they're going to kind of give the customer what they want.”   “I think there are times that the ADA could have been a little bit stronger in their representation against the carriers.”   “You can't worry about the insurance, you just have to treat, diagnose treatment.”   “Here's the thing with insurance carriers is when a guideline gets put out, it usually takes them about a year or two to catch up to that.”   “They're going to look at redoing the CDT completely.”   “We don't have the data in order to sufficiently say, ‘Hey, I need more money for this because I do a lot of it and it saves you money on this down the road.'”   “If we're going to perio chart, we chart it all.”   “Are there guidelines for 4355 of how much crap we knock off people's teeth?”   “You don't go into a doctor's office and dictate that they take out this tumor or not this tumor, you don't do that. So I just think we're very scared of patients, and I just don't get it.”   “There's this thought, ‘well, it's not going to get paid, we really shouldn't even bill it.'”   “I like to get paid for things.”   “The more you bill for it, you create that metric, they're seeing it coming down the road, the more apt they're going to be to cover it.”   “I really believe that clinicians should not be aware of a patient's insurance status when they're back there.”   “Just because it's a benefit doesn't mean that it's rooted in any kind of science.”   “Start saying you probably won't get paid for it, but you can do what you think is best clinically.”   “We need to code for what is needed, and what we need to do, not what the insurance will cover or won't cover for them.”      LINKS:   A Tale of Two Hygienists homepage - https://ataleoftwohygienists.com/     AToTH on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aTaleOfTwoHygienists/     AToTH on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ataleoftwohygienists     AToTH on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/atoth/?originalSubdomain=ca        PDT Homepage     American Academy of Periodontology Homepage     Email Jamie   My Dental Educator Homepage      Odyssey Management Homepage   Odyssey Management Newsletter   Nobody Told Me That! This week Matt Crespin is joined by Carrie Wucinich, RDH author of Where the Sugar Bugs Live.   About the Book:    Are you constantly nagging your children to brush and floss their teeth?   Where the Sugar Bugs Live is here to help!  Most parents struggle when it comes to the morning and nighttime brushing routine, and it is a constant battle. Their children don’t see the importance of proper dental care and would rather find something else to do.  Where the Sugar Bugs Live is a book designed to give your children a visual of what happens when they don’t take care of their teeth. The sugar bugs, all shapes and sizes, simply eat at their teeth. The goal is to help them realize the importance of removing these sugar bugs so they don’t cause black holes (cavities).  They will also learn where the sugar bugs live and how to brush and floss them away! This is just the book you need to create a happier brushing routine and a long-lasting visual that will stay with them forever.  A portion of the proceeds will be given to families affected by childhood cancer.   Episode Highlights Carrie’s Background The Book  Publishing Process Other Dental Kids Books Quotes   “Getting this book into the hands of kids that don’t have dental care, if they can learn about sugar bugs, if they can see and have someone read to them, they might have a healthier smile and less decay.”    “You know sometimes these kids haven't even seen a toothbrush.”   “The most gut wrenching thing I have heard, and I have heard it more than once is When you give a kid a toothbrush and they say ‘now I get to have my own toothbrush’.”   “I want to get sponsors to help get these books into Title 1 schools and Head Start Programs.”    “I want to sell 1 million books, get 1 million books into 1 million kids hands, and donate 1 million dollars.”  “Reach out to me because I’m here, I am totally open to any tips or suggestions to help me help the kids.”    Links    Carrie: wherethesugarbugslive@hotmail.com    Yellow Ribbon Books: https://yellowribbonbooks.com    www.ADHA2021.org    Matt’s Email: MattC@ADHA.net  ADHA Annual Report: https://www.adha.org/annual-reports    The health and wellness of the dental hygiene community and the patients you serve is our top priority. Please Leave a Review!    THIS EPISODE COUNTS FOR CE! - read the disclaimer as it might not count for your state. Go here to take the test and get your free CE Credit! Few hygienists want to bring politics into the office, but the truth is that if you want to make lasting changes to the profession, then you need to work with the legislators who pass state and federal laws. The guest for this week's A Tale of Two Hygienists has firsthand working with the legislative movers and shakers.   Matt Crespin is the associate director for the Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, former president of American Dental Hygienists Association, and a hygienist himself, but you might be more familiar with him in his role as host of the Your Official ADHA Podcast, which you can find on our very own Dental Podcast Network!   In this episode, Matt discusses the importance of coalition-building, explains how he maintains his positivity and lays out how to create a state-level position for ensuring compliance from clinics and programs across the board.     EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:   Interview starts: 10:32   - What Matt finds so rewarding about hosting the ADHA podcast.   - Matt's “chance to breathe” after finishing his tenure as ADHA president and what he enjoys doing now that he no longer has as many responsibilities.   - How legislation impacts whether or not hygienists can educate in schools.   - Looking at how clinics and programs are vetted, step by step.   - The key advantage of working together in a state health coalition.   - Who hygienists should contact and work with if they want lasting legislative changes.   - The events and meetups that listeners looking to engage with their legislators should look out for.     QUOTES:   “If you can't bill for the services you provide, then there's no way to sustain the program.”   “I find it more effective to work at the legislative level than at the rules level.”   “In our state, it's actually more restrictive as a hygienist to work in a dental office than it is pretty much everywhere else.”   “You as an independent constituent are likely not going to have an impact on policy change. It's gonna take the masses.”   “The more people you can have at the table with more voices from different perspectives, you just get a whole lot more done.”   “If there's something you're really passionate about, then it's worth fighting for.”   LINKS: Matt's email - mcrespin@chw.org Your Official ADHA Podcast - https://www.ataleoftwohygienists.com/yourofficialadhapodcast/  Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin - https://childrenswi.org/    A Tale of Two Hygienists homepage - https://ataleoftwohygienists.com/     AToTH on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/aTaleOfTwoHygienists/     AToTH on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ataleoftwohygienists     AToTH on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/atoth/?originalSubdomain=ca
