Allagash Brewing will celebrate its 30th anniversary this summer, and founder Rob Tod knows where he'll be and what he'll be drinking on the brewery's birthday, July 1 – an Allagash White at the Great Lost Bear, the taphouse that served the first pint of White in Portland, Maine. “I remember it like it was yesterday. That was our very first draftline,” Tod tells Brewbound managing editor Jess Infante on the latest episode of the Brewbound Podcast. “I shipped eight kegs of Allagash White to Nappi Distributors on June 29, and July 1 I worked at the brewery all day and my plan was to head down to the Bear where I knew it was going on tap at 5 o'clock, and just hang out for a few hours and having a bunch of beers. “I thought, my work's going to be done. I've spent a year building the brewery. I've written this recipe, I've brewed the beer. I'm kind of all done,” he continued. Tod had a pint with the Bear's owners and was happy with it. He had a second pint and a realization hit him: “I've got to get back to work.” “I got in my car and I drove right back to the brewery and kept working on whatever I was working on at the time just continuing to build and piece the brewery together,” Tod said. “I've always felt like the work isn't done.” In the conversation, Tod Tod discusses growing Allagash into the 15th largest Brewers Association-defined craft brewery by volume. He also explains what Allagash is looking for in distributor partners, how much capacity his brewery has left for expansion and why the brewery pulled back in the early 2000s. “We've really optimized how we can support a market, whether it's a really close local market like Boston or Minnesota, Colorado or even Los Angeles,” Tod explained. “We really do feel like we've got a strong, competitive go-to-market plan and that we can do a really solid, optimized job supporting our distributor partners.” Tod taps into Allagash's innovation approach that checks the boxes of “balanced, drinkability, complexity and authenticity” and how the launches of a lager, hazy IPA and variety pack feed into those pillars. Plus, the Brewbound team recaps the latest headlines and plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on Minute Maid Spiked's foray into lemonade, pink and otherwise.
Today the gang speaks with Rob Tod, founder of Maine-based Allagash Brewing Co., makers of the iconic Allagash White, about their rapid transformation during and after the pandemic, new products, the company's B Corp certification, and Rob's wild adventure at the Summit earlier this year. ================================= Watch on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/beernetradio Podcast feeds: https://www.beernetradio.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5mk5ITn9bXu1KOvx21QzEb Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beernet-radio/id1591940567 ================================= About Beer Business Daily publisher Harry Schuhmacher joins his editors and other guests once a week as they grok the beer industry issues of the day. -Podcast Hotline: Text or call Harry in confidence at: (262) 345-2501 -Audio/Video feeds at https://linktr.ee/beernet -Articles referenced at beernet.com -Socials: @beerbizdaily #beernews #beerindustry #beer --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beernetradio/message
This week's episode is a panel discussion on lager brewing, recorded in front of a live audience late one night on the patio of Cerveza Fauna (https://cervezafauna.com) after a full day of judging for the Copa Baja beer festival in Mexicali, Mexico, in late 2023. Joining the discussion are three prominent lager brewers—Ashleigh Carter of Denver's Bierstadt Lagerhaus (https://www.bierstadtlager.com), Ryan Brooks of San Diego's SouthNorte (https://southnorte.com), and Jeff Bagby (who, earlier this week announced that he was joining Green Cheek Beer (https://www.greencheekbeer.com) as they acquire Bagby's brewery in Oceanside, California). The location in Mexico provides the perfect backdrop for diving into Mexican, Mexican-style, and adjunct lagers, and the discussion also focuses on dark lagers. Along the way, they cover creative and technical points such as: the challenge of brewing great lager in smaller batch sizes understanding other brewers' commercial approaches through lab analysis priorities for gear and process techniques for brewing better lager on systems designed for single-infusion ale understanding the impact of water on lager brewing selecting yeast for Mexican-style lager approaches to natural carbonation brewing with corn via cereal mash versus pre-gelatinized products making specialty beer with popcorn clever approaches to building color without intense dark malt flavor And more. Lean is all the rage in hop-forward West Coast–style beers, from pilsner to IPA, and paring beers back to their bare necessities has been a significant focus for Burgeon's (https://burgeonbeer.com) Anthony Tallman. Yet the quest for crisp-and-drinkable doesn't mean sacrificing flavor, and recent experimentation has given Tallman a fresh perspective on the ultra-minimal approach. In this episode—which is focused especially on Carlsbad Crush, winner of multuple GABF medials in the International-Style Pale Ale category—Tallman discusses what has and has not worked with their clear hop-forward beers, including: the impacts of various pilsner malts on pale ales, IPAs, and lagers shortening and lengthening boil times for certain beers achieving significant measured IBUs in a beer with no hot-side hops inadvertently making a would-be hazy IPA drop clear via knockout dry hopping watering back to lower whirlpool temperatures varying techniques based on the hops in a recipe focusing on hot-side hops for increased package longevity finding balance in lower-ABV West Coast pils And more. We have a grrreat(!; ™️) run of guests coming up over the next month, but this week we're just playing the hit of hits — THE Goat himself (and possibly our favorite episode ever), ROB “The TodFather” TOD of @AllagashBrewing!.On that note, Allagash just launched a new podcast of their very own - “From Maine, With Love”, and you best believe it is fully up to glowing Allagash standards. How much it was inspired by episodes #100 and #62 of Graining In is open for debate
In this lastest episode we are treated to a tasting of Rob's recipes, including the iconic Allagash White, Tripel and Curieux. Listen in to hear how each of these recipes came to be and enjoy!
In this episode we have the good fortune to sit down with Allagash Brewing Company Founder Rob Tod. You've probably read Rob's story on their website or heard it second hand on a tour at the brewery, but there is something special hearing it first hand from the man himself. Rob is an icon in the Maine craft beer community and truly an interesting dude to spend time with. Listen in to this interesting conversation and enjoy!
Innovative products are not always immediately accepted by customers. This was the case for Allagash Brewing Company owner Rob Tod who explains his journey to success in this episode. After shifting customer tastes, Allagash was hit with another challenge – COVID-19. With seventy percent of their business coming from bars and restaurants, Allagash started to focus on employee wellness while riding out the COVID-19 storm. Rob also explains how supporting local grain farmers improved sustainability. 5:08 – Rob describes the role breweries play in the Maine brand. 8:45 – Rob shares the story of starting Allagash Brewing Company and how they came up with the company and beer names. 11:23 – Rob talks about getting into the beer industry. 16:15 – Rob explains how Allagash has responded to the pandemic with an employee wellness focus. 21:36 – Nancy asks Rob how Allagash's business model has changed as the pandemic eases. 25:31 – Rob runs through the process of becoming a B Corp business. 32:18 – Rob describes Allagash's sustainability practices. 40:34 – Rob explains how public relations plays a role for Allagash. 42:36 – Rob talks about some of the awards the brewery has won. 46:36 – Rob shares where you can buy Allagash's beer. 48:11 – Rob shares some resources that have helped his career. Quote “I started with the white beer, which is a cloudy beer. It's traditional Belgian yeast. It's spiced. People hadn't seen, tasted or heard of a beer like this at the time… I actually feel like I succeeded in giving people this unique experience, but the downside was for the first 10 years, the beer didn't sell. I used to walk into accounts and pour a sample of it into a glass and the first thing anyone would say is ‘What's wrong with it? Why does it look like this? Why does it taste like this?'” – Rob Tod, owner of Allagash Brewing Company Links: Otter Creek Brewing Co.: http://ottercreekbrewing.com/ The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. It's listener request time this week, as the Bros take a recommendation to review Allagash White. Noah and Matty take a quick breath amidst a great run of guests to collect themselves. The guys talk Rob Tod-induced stage fright. reflect on the conversations they've had lately, and get so meta the conversation (briefly) turns to conversation itself. Noah gives a recap on BBB's recent sticky toe dip into the world of honey beers -- one in a collaboration DIPA with old pals Trillium, the other in Milo saison -- and Matty's sweet tooth proves insatiable when it comes to single-chain carbohydrates. In 1995 Rob Tod founded Allagash Brewing. With innovation at the forefront, he brewed the award winning Allagash White. In the 25 years since then, Allagash has grown substantially and so has their positive impact on community and the environment. Allagash sidestreams 99% of their waste, preventing it from ever making it to a landfill, invests in solar and wind to reduce their carbon foot print, donates 1% of all sales to local nonprofits, and purchased over 750,000 pounds of wheat from right here in their home state of Maine. Rob used his hands to build a company, a phenomenon and a community.
Haunted House by Allagash Brewing Company is cursed with Roasted Barley and Blackprinz malt that give it a gravely dark hue. Hopped with Crystal, Chinook, and Saaz hops, this beer ends with a ghost of coffee-flavored bitterness and a hauntingly complex malty palate. In 1995, when Rob Tod opened Allagash Brewing Company, he wanted to start with one beer: a Belgian-style wheat beer called Allagash White. At first, beer drinkers didn’t know what to think of it, but they soon came back again and again. In 1998, Allagash White won its first Gold medal at the World Beer Cup. Now they brew an extensive lineup of beers for all to enjoy. This week on FDB - an etiquette teacher kicks a ninja’s ass, a troll gets put to justice, food is delivered in the buff, and more! Craft Brew News 07/10/20(Courtesy of Brewbound.com)Allagash Founder Rob Tod Recovers From COVID-19In an interview with a Maine NBC affiliate, Allagash founder Rob Tod revealed that he tested positive for COVID-19 in mid-March after returning from a ski vacation.Tod told the affiliate that he self-quarantined and “rode it out” at home, not wanting to infect any other Allagashians.Even with the diagnosis, Tod said he was “so consumed and immersed in running this company at a time when we had lost 70% of our business the day that I came down with the COVID.”With March and the coronavirus, practically overnight people stopped going to bars and restaurants, where most of Allagash’s sales occurred. In less than a month sales tanked by seventy percent. Since losing 70% of its business, Allagash has since refocused on building its off-premise business. The company in June shared plans to launch several years’ worth of innovations in the fall, including a line of sparkling session ales made with fruit called Little Grove by Allagash, a new stout called North Sky and 6-pack bottles of flagship Allagash White.California Governor Orders Shutdown of Breweries and Restaurants in 19 CountiesWith a growing number of new COVID-19 cases in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom has expanded the state’s temporary shutdown of bars and breweries to include a ban on indoor and outdoor dining and drinking in 19 counties, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. However, restaurants will be allowed to continue operating outdoor patio spaces, as well as breweries that operate licensed food service or partner with neighboring restaurants or food trucks.Counties included in the order include Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. Majority of counties account for nearly 75% of the state’s population. All 19 are on the state Department of Public Health’s “monitoring list” for areas with an increasing number of novel coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.Dichello Distributors Files Lawsuit Against Anheuser-Busch Alleging Conspiracy to Force SaleAn Anheuser-Busch wholesaler in Connecticut is suing the world’s largest beer manufacturer alleging that the maker of Bud Light conspired with a now former employee to damage the business and force a sale of the distributorship.New Haven, Connecticut-based Dichello Distributors is suing Anheuser-Busch, claiming A-B “engaged in an ongoing conspiracy” with Sal DiBetta, a former employee who later worked as CEO of the wholesaler between 2013 and 2016, as well as “other unnamed parties,” to “undermine” Dichello and force president John Hall’s family to sell the business to A-B, according to a complaint filed on June 17 in the Connecticut Superior Court.Dichello also alleges A-B has tried to enforce an equity agreement on the wholesaler and threatened them “with consequences for non-compliance, including forced sale of the distributorship.”A-B has not responded to a request for comment.DiBetta worked for A-B for more than 30 years before joining Dichello in October 2013 and departing in 2016, according to his Linkedin profile.Anheuser-Busch to Pay Record $5 Million Offer In Compromise for Trade Practice Violations Tied to Sports and Entertainment SponsorshipsAnheuser-Busch InBev has agreed to pay a record $5 million offer in compromise (OIC) for alleged trade practice violations related to sports and entertainment sponsorships, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) announced today.Additionally, A-B’s importer and wholesaler permits were suspended for two days in Littleton, Colorado, and four days in Denver. The $5 million fine is the largest offer in compromise collected to date by the TTB, Thomas Hogue, a spokesperson for the federal agency, confirmed with Brewbound. In this special Drinking Partners release, Day visits Portland, Maine and interviews Rob Tod, founder of Allagash Brewing, who literally pieced together and welded (from dairy equipment!) the original brewery in the mid 1990’s. The opening minutes have Mr. Tod discussing his early vision for Allagash and focus on the Belgian brewing tradition. Wondering which beers not to serve cold? Rob answers that and more during this detailed interview that offers inside access to brewing and business from one of the originals in the craft beer industry. Listeners will be surprised to hear how slowly Allagash developed, employing only four people after their first ten years. Why did Rob Tod persist? Midway, he answers that while describing the down moments that he struggled through to keep the brewery going and why he values his current employees so much. This newest Drinking Partners podcast with one of craft brewery’s best also highlights what the Drinking Partners do best: examine the industry from their own distinctive perspective and with humor and joy.
Craft Brew News 03/13/20(Stories Courtesy of Brewbound.com)Craft Brewers Conference CanceledThe largest gathering of craft brewing industry professionals has been canceled due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, the coronavirus disease .After days of speculation and major events across the country canceling and postponing, the Brewers Association today announced the decision to forgo holding the 2020 edition of the Craft Brewers Conference & Brew Expo America, as well as the World Beer Cup competition, which was expected to draw more than 13,000 people to San Antonio from April 19-22.The BA said in a statement on its website. “Developments over the past 24 hours have made hosting this year’s conference infeasible, and, after much thought and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America and World Beer Cup,”In major cities and counties across the country, local officials are banning large gatherings of people in an effort to institute social distancing of individuals and slow the spread of the disease. Disneyland also announced it was shutting down.Celebrities such as Tom Hanks, as well as Utah Jazz stars Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, have all been confirmed as testing positive for COVID-19.Ballast Point Deal ClosesConstellation Brands’ sale of Ballast Point to an investor group fronted by little-known Chicago upstart beer company Kings and Convicts officially closed on Monday. The iconic San Diego craft brewery’s return to independence and ownership by a craft brewing group that didn’t produce 1,000 barrels of beer last year blindsided and confounded industry professionals and media when it was announced in early December. In 2015, Constellation Brands paid $1 billion for the brand in 2015. Industry sources have pegged the sale to Kings and Convicts at around $68 million, plus several years of hop contracts.Moving forward, Ballast Point’s turnaround starts with adding a sales team, something the brand didn’t have after Constellation reorganized its sales structure in 2018. The company is about a third of its way to hiring 45 salespeople, including national chain accounts and on- and off-premise reps in San Diego.Athletic Brewing Company Adds San Diego Production Brewery, Closes $17.5 Million Funding RoundConnecticut-based craft non-alcoholic beer maker Athletic Brewing Company announced today the acquisition of the assets of the former Ballast Point “Trade Street” facility, as well as the close of a $17.5 million Series B funding round.Athletic Brewing co-founder Bill Shufelt declined to disclose how much the company paid for the assets but said it will lease the 80,000 sq. ft. production facility, which does not have a taproom.Athletic’s Stratford, Connecticut-based facility produced 10,000 barrels in 2019, but the company was hampered by production constraints since last May, Shufelt said. The California production facility will increase the company’s capacity “tenfold” to meet growing demand.Allagash Founder Rob Tod Advises New England Craft Brewers: ‘It’s Going to Get Tough’Allagash Brewing founder Rob Tod counseled fellow Maine brewers on what he predicted will be choppy waters ahead during last week’s New England Brew Summit in Portland, Maine.Tod said “We’re going to have to work hard to protect what we’ve built,”. “We just saw how much value we’re delivering to communities all over this country. We’re going to have to work hard to protect it, because I can tell you there’s nothing that the big mega-brewers would like more than to take beer back into those big factories.”He also said “One of my big concerns is last time I went to my local grocery store, I wasn’t noticing them adding more coolers, and these seltzers are going in a cooler space that was previously occupied by beer,”. “We’ve worked for 25, 30 years building this beer shelf out, and the seltzers are going in this space. So, is it good for beer? You know, I don’t know.”In Allagash’s quarter-century of existence, its distribution footprint has changed drastically, which Tod attributed to advice from Jerry Sheehan of multi-state wholesaler Craft Brewers Guild: Don’t be a mile wide and an inch deep.In 2005, Allagash sold 5,000 barrels while distributing to 26 states and Washington, D.C.Today, Allagash distributes to 15 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Chicago, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, and has seen its volume skyrocket since the mid-2000s.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? The fifth episode of The Food Coma Podcast welcomes the Founding Brewer of Allagash Brewing in Portland, ME, Rob Tod. He has been consistently one of the most prolific brewers in the country since he founded his business in 1995, and he received the 2019 James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine, Beer, and Spirits Producer. Both Rob and I have fond memories of the '90s, especially in regard to Portland, but quite varied experiences. This is the jumping-off point, and topics range from beer (obviously) to FroYo to my life as a teenager who looked like he was 35. Sometimes I get so damn excited to discuss the 90's that I can barely complete a sentence. Sometimes we drink Allagash White. Sometimes it's hard to believe how much Rob has accomplished thus far in his impressive career. MANY thanks go to our sponsors: Tourmaline Spring Water Amethyst Elixir Company Living Nutz. In episode 29 of the Brewbound Podcast, Brewbound editors Chris Furnari and Justin Kendall chat with Allagash founder Rob Tod about how the addition of canned packages will transform the Allagash business in the years to come, how the company is repositioning itself off-premise, why it invests disproportionately in quality-control measures and how it approaches innovation without chasing trends. Allagash, a wonderful brewery in Portland, Maine founded in 1995 by Rob Tod. Matt Pollard is responsible for Allagash Field Sales for DC and Maryland and comes by to chat all things Allagash: new beer releases, Allagash White in a can (!), visiting the brewery, and the culture of the brewery. We do an accidental advertisement for visiting Portland, Maine and go off topic with DC beer events, but that's to be expected.
Rob Tod, the founder of Allagash Brewing Company, joins us to talk about the origins of his brewery, his philosophy behind brewing Belgian beers and where he sees the beer business going in the next few years. This week on Beer Sessions Radio, we've got a special episode featuring Allagash Brewery Founder and Brewers Association chair, Rob Tod. We talked about important, timely issues relevant to all independent craft breweries in the country, including the importance of local breweries, their impact in their communities via local jobs and support of local charities, building community, and independent craft beer seal initiative, and how consumers really do identify with the term "independently owned."
We’ve got what I consider a bucket-list interview today. In the past, I’ve been thrilled to sit down with people like Sam Calagione, Lauren Limbach (formerly Salazar), Jim Koch, Garrett Oliver, Bill Covaleski, and others who were so fundamental to the world of beer that we enjoy now with all its diversity, innovation, and re-invention of the model. These are people who made it all happen by practically rubbing two sticks together. And because of that, almost anyone willing to put in the work has the opportunity to follow in their footsteps. But of course, for breweries like Allagash, their story isn’t all about the past. Allagash, one of my north star breweries, is a company still making big moves and leading the way on things like regional agriculture, wild ales and, more recently, within the Brewers Association. Founder Rob Tod started Allagash in 1995 with a Belgian White Ale. But these days, his most important role is arguably his post at the Brewers Association as he helps them welcome in a new generation of brewers, sometimes referred to as the "long tail." Alongside his brewmaster, Jason Perkins, he’s also helping lead conversations on resourcing and quality that are critical to craft beer, as a niche, not missing a step on its longterm growth trajectory. And one of the things I admire about Allagash the most is its ability to focus on what’s possible in craft brewing rather than complaining about the things that have always held it back. Beer is a competitive industry with a lot of different kind of players, but for Allagash’s part, it seems as though there aren’t enough hours in the day to devote to all the positive, impactful things that a brewery connected to its community can accomplish. And that kind of attitude comes through in every person I’ve ever met from the company. But especially this guy.

To supplement the celebration Horst Dornbusch, also a contributor to The Companion, Jen Schwertman (Blind Tiger), Peter Kennedy (SimplyBeer.com), and Christian DeBenedetti (beer author) join the conversation. They talk about other essential beer reads, from homebrewing classics such as Charlie Papazian and Michael Jackson to Christian’s new book The Great American Ale Trail. Later on in the shows Rob Tod from Allagash Brewery calls in to join the revelry and to about how craft brewers deal with expansion and the science behind beer microbes.
