The sometimes convoluted journey to success. Dan Shapiro is the CEO and co-founder of Glowforge, the iconic 3D laser printer. Following the biggest 30-day crowdfunding campaign in history almost nine years ago, hundreds of thousands of users are bringing their creations to life with a click of a button. Prior to Glowforge, Dan founded multiple other startups including the bestselling boardgame in Kickstarter history, Robot Turtles. With an engineering degree from Harvey Mudd College, and his career start at Microsoft on the Windows 98 kernel team, this entrepreneur has a lot of valuable information to share including insights about the startup journey, how to choose a VC, build a team, and when to sell. Have a listen to this episode of Beyond the Blue Badge, hosted by T.A. McCann.
I met Dan Shapiro years ago when I went out to fly kites with Elan Lee. What a delightful guy! Dan is an inspiring entrepreneur with boundless energy, always upbeat. He's had, I think, four companies that succeeded, maybe three that were venture backed. Dan did something super cool. He got excited about making a board game that would teach kids how to program called Robot Turtles. He made that game using Kickstarter or something, and in the process really figured out how to succeed at crowdfunding. I think at the time it was one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns ever for game. But then he took that knowledge and he used it when he started Glowforge. Glowforge is a desktop laser cutter. This is a tool you can use to cut materials. You draw something on your computer, click print and it'll literally use a laser to go cut or engrave materials. You've seen this kind of thing. Things engraved in wood that are done this way now, and lots of parts can be made this way for all kinds of projects. Dan wanted to democratize that. I don't know if my laser cutter was the first one he ever saw, but one way or another, he ended up with one in his garage and they were like these kind of crummy, chinese laser cutters with print drivers from hell that are used to operate them, and they're sort of dicey, but it's still inspiring because what you can do with them. Dan had one in his garage to make Robot Turtles. So the next company he wanted to make, Glowforge, was to try and take that amazing tool and bring it to everyone. And this was very analogous to what Makerbot had done with 3D printers, which I got to help with a little bit. In those days, Dan asked me what I thought about it and I got to help him, be a little advisor for Glowforge. They made this thing a very big success, in part by crowdfunding the first version and this was really hard to do. They made the first prototype. Made a very inspiring video about it. They did a crowdfunding campaign and got world record pre-orders for this thing and that's how they funded starting the company and it's hard to do that. Hard to keep everybody happy. All these things, especially hardware projects always take longer than you hope or estimate. I think they probably lost some of their backers along the way for those reasons. But they did ship, which was not true of a lot of other crowdfunding campaigns. I'm a Kickstarter junkie, so I back all kinds of stuff and a good fraction of it never shows up and a good fraction of it shows up and by the time it does, I can't remember what it was in the first place. I've been wanting to share this conversation with Dan with you guys for a long time. He's a great entrepreneur. I have a hard time getting him to say anything mean about anybody or anything, he's so positive. You'll learn about not only Glowforge and what they've done, but also, a little bit about how to think about these technologies and bringing them into the world. Enjoy! Our guest this week is Dan Shapiro. Dan is the founder of Glowforge, the 3D laser printer. He's also the creator of Robot Turtles, the board game that teaches programming to preschoolers. He wrote Hot Seat: The CEO Guidebook, and his latest hobby is throwing his wife and twin 10-year-olds in dungeons with dragons. You can find him on Twitter @danshapiro. Four-time Founder, CEO and investor, Dan Shapiro, shares the ups and downs of his entrepreneurial journey thus far. Though he humbly attributes much of his success to privilege, Dan has worked hard, taken risks and followed an unconventional career path that has led him to become a board game inventor, author and record holder for the most backed 30-day crowdfunding campaign. Today, Dan is focused on building Glowforge, the iconic 3D laser printer company founded in 2014. The idea originated while he was creating Robot Turtles, the board game that teaches programming to kids. Now, his company is nearing 100 employees and has grown 2.5X in the last nine months. Dan discusses his transition from Microsoft to the startup world, how he really appreciates feedback, and how they are intentionally creating a culture of diversity and inclusion at Glowforge. Dan’s enthusiasm for what customers are making with their product is something you won’t want to miss.
This episode is recorded live at Glowforge, makers of a 2D laser cutter—but it's not a sponsored episode and we don't talk about the hardware much at all. Instead, it's conversation about what people are trying to make and how to get started as a creator. I talk with Glowforge founder (and my friend) Dan Shapiro, and the company's two content designers, Shell Meggersee and Nick Taylor, who spend a lot of their time talking to new and experienced makers as they work with their laser equipment. They offer some great insight and a lot of encouragement. A few lovely quotes that struck me on listening to the recording afterwards: Nick: “I wonder if we're teaching them how to fail gracefully, rather than how to be successful?” Shell: “There's some subtle psychology in the fact that, ‘Oh, the machine messed up! Oops! It wasn't me!'” Dan: “Tools that help you become an amateur are so wonderful…it gets you to that point where you have some small degree of self-sufficiency and creativity.” (Glowforge did sponsor an episode earlier in the current season; this episode was entirely my idea and no money changed hands. However, if you're thinking about buying a Glowforge, you can use this referral link and get $100 to $500 off purchase price depending on the model. I receive the same amount as a referral fee, which helps support the podcast.) Patrons This episode is also brought to you in part by Disruptor-level patrons Bob Owen, Garrett Allen, Michael Warner, Nick Hurley, and Nicholas Santos. You can become a patron of the show on a one-time or recurring basis, and get rewards like an exclusive enamel pin and being thanked in this fashion! Guest biographies Dan Shapiro sold his last company to Google. His last side project was Robot Turtles, the best-selling board game in Kickstarter history. He builds drones, authored Hot Seat: The Startup CEO Guidebook, and his seven-year-old twins regularly beat him at the game Werewolf. You can listen to the New Disruptors episode on Robot Turtles (episode 59, January 2014). Shell Meggersee has worked in film, TV and video games, bringing everything from giant 3D monsters to well-known cartoon characters to life. At night, you might find her designing anything from vinyl toys to couture bedding fabric to intricate wedding invitations. Nick Taylor has spent the last 12 years completing hundreds of projects including custom headphones, bespoke bicycles, desktop furniture, and lighting. Before joining Glowforge, Nick spent 5 years at Apple and ran his own company making artisanal leather goods. Show notes Service bureaus for 2D cutting and 3D printing abound. Ponoko is a well-known one for cutting and engraving, and Shapeways for 3D printing. Nick Benson, part of a great family of artists and a descendent of stone carvers, has an amazing Instagram account The ansible, a sci-fi solution for instantaneous communication Graw! In this show, we talk about Empire Engine, Artificium, Kings of Israel, Robot Turtles, Cthulhu Wars, Hyperborea, Pints of Blood, and Dogs of War. We have a tale of horror and of amazement, Mark talks about his kids, Mary about Tichu strategy, and Brian about Mancala. Tom discusses why the Dice Tower is about games, but especially the people who play them; and we end the show with our favorite dice found in games.

Code monkeys. We explore 3 games in the programmed movement genre. Robot Turtles teaches programming skills to toddlers. Colt Express pits bandits against each other on a cardboard train. Empire Engine is a steampunk micro-game that uses cards as gears.

No, we didn't get temporarily possessed by Anna Marie - there's just a lot of RPGs to talk about.Time: 2'51"33Some days, you just need to sit down and vent a spleen, and so Nintendo Free Radio returns to air out its body parts in elongated glory. Stephen is up first in New Business with a look at a Kickstarter project that actually managed to reach its goal... the programming/wildlife board game Robot Turtles, which may or may not be Frog Fractions 2. In actual video game news, Stephen also got on the Tales of Xillia train a few months back and gives you an extended look at the game that spawned a $130 LE. Donald has a Final Fantasy X HD update with a little history being made, then proceeds to go HAM on his Vita memory card and hits a couple of platformers in the news lately before finishing with extended impressions of UbiSoft's Child of Light - a game that actually came out at the usual price Ubisoft games get bought at. Austen was in on FFX and Child of Light, but saves his main RPG ire for South Park: The Stick of Truth, which in true Obsidian fashion managed to crash before he could boot the game. After a special all-Talkback episode of Now Posted, Whatcha Watchin' is animation-free for the first time in a long time. Stephen discusses Gold Rush Alaska and Burn Notice, while Donald lets his Google Glass freak flag fly on a visit to Silicon Valley. Austen has the super-heroic (and super-average) duo of Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 to finish things off. For the Feature discussion, since three Vita owners represents a quorum the trio looks at the future of Sony and Nintendo's dedicated handheld business in light of some bad NPD results. Is the only thing keeping the VIta alive in Japan Akiba's Trip? Possibly. You'll have to listen to find out. Finally, the Mushrooms feature a purchase Stephen will enjoy, a purchase we KNOW Austen will inevitably regret, and a purchase Donald's really conflicted about. Unfortunately, E3 is coming up, and we want to hear from you in the run-up to the big show - so drop us an email, will ya? Dan Shapiro created the game Robot Turtles out of scissors, clip art, and a printer to offer asymmetric play: kids and adults can play together and both can enjoy the experience. He brought it to Kickstarter to sell a few hundred copies, and wound selling over 25,000. In his workshop, Dan explains how the game developed, the Kickstarter proceeded, and how he's fulfilling it.
