This week Casey Groat and James Murphy spend some time free-form bantering with me, creating one sweet hour of radio. Inner Nature (FKA Fashionista Boyfriend) is the work of Casey Groat from Sacramento. Having started as just a kid with an interest in making noises with the computer, the project has matured into themes such as love and loss, as well as experimenting with sampling and songs with meaning and purpose. Artists such as Washed Out, Toro Y Moi, Small Black and Neon Indian are a big influence on the sound. The live act is a three-piece featuring Casey, James Murphy (Ancient Astronaut, Saint Solitaire, Ihabial) and Austin Mooney. As viewers of the Netflix phenomenon Sex Education, watched ‘bad girl' Maeve Wiley cosy up in her prized ‘Small Black Arrows' T-shirt, we can only assume they all breathed a sigh of relief knowing that the series didn't end without revealing her favourite band. But it does beg the question, WHO ON EARTH ARE SMALL BLACK ARROWS? Fans of the show may be forgiven for thinking they are a fictional band dreamed up by the creatives behind the wildly popular, Emmy winning, comedy-drama but Small Black Arrows are in fact very real, and they are really good. The brainchild of Luke Bailey & Jimmy Hanley, the lockdown & their multiple discipline backgrounds in the arts were the catalyst for their formation. Small Black Arrows combine eclectic influences from folk to trip-hop & from RnB to rock and opera, to create their own unique brand of mesmerising, atmospheric music. death's dynamic shroud is a collaborative project between James Webster (also known as HCMJ), Tech Honors and Keith Rankin (aka Giant Claw, also label boss at Orange Milk Records, who just released the new record from our pal Problems- more on that later). death's dynamic shroud typically samples video game soundtracks in a mixtape-style format, oftentimes with special distortions and modifications made as a result of being bounced off analog recordings. Since Keith joined up, they have explore a much more high-fidelity, experimental sound (including sampling of anime soundtracks and k-pop), developing a distinct sound and visual aesthetic they personally refer to as "NUWRLD".    You can see death's dynamic shroud on tour with Small Black, hitting STL ummmmmm TONIGHT at Off Broadway, presented by that fine purveyor of warm fuzzy musical events, VaporspaceSTL.  Should have got this up before, but things regularly sneak up on us and you're not really surprised, are you?  Ope, indeed.   Here you go, give a listen to the lead single and title track of the new album, Neon Memories, available for preorder here, and then go to the dang show.  And follow VaporspaceSTL if you want the skinny on upcoming events in an actually timely fashion, their shizz is top notch, we love 'em.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Small Black over Zoom video! Formed in 2009 as a bedroom recording project, Small Black first made waves with their eponymous debut EP. Recorded in the attic of singer Josh Kolenik’s uncle’s remote Long Island beach house/surfboard workshop, the EP served as an introduction to the group, with its pulsing patchwork of vintage synths and casio beats culminating in the breakthrough single "Despicable Dogs." This track cemented them as pioneers of Chillwave, the sound of which seemed to get its hooks into so much music across the 2010s. The project evolved into a fully-fledged touring act, consisting of Kolenik (vox/keyboards), Ryan Heyner (guitar/keyboards), Juan Pieczanski (bass/guitar), and Jeff Curtin (drums), and this live influence showed up in their debut LP on Jagjaguwar, 2010's New Chain. The loopy, weeded-out album found the band messing around with hip hop drums & samples, which they further explored on 2011's Moon Killer mixtape, collaborating with rapper Heems & remixing their own material through this kaleidoscopic lens. Years of hitting the road hard sent the band after a brand new sound & aesthetic with 2013's beloved Limits of Desire. Chasing the 80s pastiche of The Blue Nile & Talk Talk, SB upped their production chops, writing, recording & mixing the record from scratch, with the anthemic "No Stranger" & "Breathless" leading the way. Punctuated by the incredible visuals of directors Nick Bentgen and Yoonha Park, it was a huge step forward for the project. 2015's Best Blues, led by "Boys Life," followed further down this sophisti-pop path, adding more organic flourishes, choral samples & a little goth energy into the mix. 2020 finds Small Black back in the game with a brand new label, the vaporwave upstart 100% Electronica. Working again with mixer Nicolas Vernhes, the band’s new record, Cheap Dreams is out now! We want to hear from you! We begin in London, with a great new single from the living legend, Gary Numan!  Then, we make a stop in London's grime district, a place where electronic dub still lives in the form of Mr. Mitch. Next, it's off to Dublin, for a new one from Inhaler.  After that, a hop over to the west coast of Ireland and Galway a home of traditional Irish music, but we bring you something quite different. It's NewDad that delivers a prototype of a great global indie electronic quasi-dance track. And we wrap up with our weekly chestnut, “It Won't Come Again,” from The Bevis Frond.  Also check out the bonus tracks on the playlist and in the weekly newsletter. Our bonus bands include, Goth Babe, Small Black, Sven Wunder Matt Sweeney and Bonnie “Prince” Billy, dodie with a great remix by Georgia, and a loud nasty track from The Horrors, called “Lout.”

I am honored to bring you this week’s special episode featuring powerful stories of small Black business owners.  Earlier this year, School of Thought, a creative agency, and one of it’s long-standing clients, Milliman, hosted a conference that brought together business leaders to discuss the obstacles Black entrepreneurs faced in the pandemic. They wanted to present their conference attendees with a short but impactful mini-podcast episode that captured what it's like to be a Black entrepreneur in one of the most challenging economic environments we’ve ever seen.  I was asked to interview over 9 dynamic entrepreneurs and experts for this project in what amounted to over 540 minutes of audio. The final result is a powerful 25 minute podcast that beautifully captures the real issues facing Black small businesses.  In the episode, you’ll hear the entrepreneurs & experts share their experiences and the solutions that need to be implemented, so that Black small businesses can survive and thrive in a post-pandemic world.  The episode was; written, edited and produced by School of Thought. NITE have completed three full tours in North America, 2016 with Seabound (Germany) and The Foreign Resort (Denmark) and 2018 with The New Division. They have been humbled to share the stage on a number of occasions with artists such as Midge Ure of Ultravox, Howard Jones, Clean Bandit, The Griswolds, A Flock of Seagulls, Small Black, The Alarm, and many more. On July 28, 2017, NITE released the album, Reborn, on Cleopatra Records, which features the song "Dreamer", as a follow-up to their 2014 self-release, I Am Not Afraid. The duo set to release their third full length album, Sleepless in April 2020 through Cleopatra Records. https://wearethenite.com https://www.instagram.com/wearethenite/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/2tXXoTykabsZNETr1Sr1zC?fbclid=IwAR3i7CTCJsWvTstY7kleblZNGLYcAasK2yRiTmHjO8aWrCFicAdNeGznuo4

Measles is a dangerous infection that can kill. As many as 100,000 people die from the disease each year. For those who survive infection, the virus leaves a lasting mark—it appears to wipe out the immune system's memory. News Intern Eva Fredrick joins host Sarah Crespi to talk about a pair of studies that looked at how this happens in children's immune systems. Read the related studies in Science and Science Immunology. In our second segment this week, Sarah talks with Todd Thompson, of Ohio State University in Columbus, about his effort to find a small black hole in a binary pair with a red giant star. Usually black holes are detected because they are accruing matter and as the matter interacts with the black hole, x-rays are released. Without this flashy signal, black hole detection gets much harder. Astronomers must look for the gravitational influence of the black holes on nearby stars—which is easier to spot when the black hole is massive. Thompson talks with Sarah about a new approach to finding small, noninteracting black holes. This week's episode was edited by Podigy. Ads on this week's show: Bayer Listen to previous podcasts.
