In this week's episode, Country Music artist Hailey Whitters (one of Gary's favorites) joined Gary Scott Thomas and shared stories about songwriting sessions, Nashville, and more. You'll be amazed at the courageous thing she did when she first arrived in Nashville! If you like getting to know more about the artists you love, give this episode a listen. In this episode:Her first impressions of NashvilleWho gave her her first big breakWriting with Lori McKennaWhich song of hers is her favoriteBeing the oldest of 6 childrenThe catalyst for being able to write happy songsHow she felt about growing up in a small townWhat people said about her being from IowaThis Iowa-born, Nashville-based rising Country star scored her breakthrough moment in 2020 with the release of her self-funded debut album THE DREAM, which was praised as "the year's deepest country album" (The Washington Post) and went on to appear on more than 15 year-end best of lists including #1 on both Stereogum's "10 Best Country Albums of 2020" and Garden & Gun's "Best Southern Albums of 2020" list. The subsequent deluxe album LIVING THE DREAM found Whitters' self-fulfilling THE DREAM's prophecy and enlisting her friends and collaborators Brent Cobb, Jordan Davis, Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Little Big Town, and Trisha Yearwood to appear on five new songs, leading NPR's Fresh Air to call her “one of the most interesting voices in country music.” In 2021 alone, Whitters toured with Luke Combs and Midland, was named the inaugural Opry NextStage Artist of the year, scored her first CMT Music Award nomination for “Breakthrough Video of the Year” (“Fillin' My Cup” feat. Little Big Town) and received her first GRAMMY nomination for Song of the Year for “A Beautiful Noise,” which was written by Ruby Amanfu, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, Alicia Keys, Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna, Linda Perry and Hailey Whitters, and performed by Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile. On March 18, 2022, Whitters released her third studio album RAISED via Pigasus / Songs & Daughters / Big Loud, followed by her debut headline Heartland Tour and performances at Tortuga Music Festival and Stagecoach Festival. Now boasting over 100 million streams across her catalog, Whitters hit the road all summer with Jon Pardi and Lainey Wilson on his Ain't Always The Cowboy Tour.https://haileywhitters.com
Multi grammy award winning songwriter Lori McKenna. Lori is an American folk, Americana, and country music singer-songwriter. Lori She has 11 solo albums as an artist, and cowritten with other artists such as Tylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sarah Barielles, Lady Gaga and many many more. Lori is one of the nicest and most talented people you could want to meet and is a songwriter that other songwriters study to write better songs. This conversation inspired me and I can't wait to share it with you. Some show highlights:The power of mumbling to find a lyricLetting the song be a cowriterHow some times a chord will tell you what to sayWhen you start overthinking-take a walkUsing imagery in your song to tell people what the room looks like so they can put themselves in there Anaphora as a lyric writing device First part of the song is the most important Writing on paper and the computerKeeping notesChanging the last chorus even a little bit, so the last chorus doesn't just pass you byThe grand finale of the last chorus, all the fireworksSing the first verse and chorus to your best friend and sing the second verse and chorus to yourself Last verse and chorus to your someone else A song is a conversation and you don't have to express it all to just one person, think of it as three different conversations “how to kiss a boy”http://www.lorimckenna.comhttps://www.scarletkeys.comEngineer: Peter Sykes https://www.petersykesmusic.comThe show's theme song "What's in a Song" was co-written with Otto GrossRecorded and performed by Otto Gross: @OttoGrossProduction (instagram)@OttoGrossMusic (Youtube, facebook, TikTok)https://biglink.to/ottogrossmusic

“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble,” said Congressman John Lewis. Leigh Nash and Matt Maher met for a song co-write honoring Lewis's wisdom, hoping to speak to issues of race in America. Knowing their white perspective was not sufficient for an honest song, some awkwardness and vulnerability led to a request of their third co-writer Ruby Amanfu. That gave rise to their moving song “Good Trouble.” Includes live performance. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today we spoke with Ruby Amanfu, the Nashville-based Grammy Award nominated songwriter, recording artist, actor, and activist. From her collaborations with Jack White, H.E.R., and Sara Bareilles to her expansive array of solo work, her voice as a musician has been heard by the world in many different ways. We also spoke about her recent collaboration with Leigh Nash on the song “Good Trouble,” which released in the wake of the BLM George Floyd protests and covering the importance of having your voice heard in an authentic way. In this week's episode, I sit down with Brian Elmquist. One of the three key vocalists and lead guitarist for The Lone Bellow. Elmquist discusses his introduction to the stage while playing guitar in his childhood sanctuary, brightly illuminated with a neon pink cross. Brian's journey as a musician took Brian from his small town in Georgia to Nashville, to New York City, and back to Nashville, where he currently resides with his wife and children. Brian discusses Lone Bellow's rise, his current collaboration with LA-based producer and friend Justin Glasco, Joyclub, and finding a home in producing and music creation. Brian is an incredible songwriter, musician, and human being. Please enjoy my conversation with the one and only Mr. Brian Elmquist.

Grammy Award winning producer, songwriter, and artist Charlie Peacock has worked with artists like Civil Wars, Switchfoot, Ruby Amanfu, and others, and his songs have been recorded by Amy Grant, dc Talk, Bela Fleck and more, but back when True Tunes' founder John J Thompson was just getting his idea out of the blocks Charlie was one of his favorite artists and deepest inspirations. One night, at the Cornerstone Festival in 1989, Charlie offered John some advice that shaped his life and work in profound ways. Recently, 30 years on since that initial meeting, the two got back together to talk about music, theology, success, and the unnecessary limitations many artists place on themselves. The "Jukebox" feature takes a look at Charlie's 1984 album Lie Down In The Grass and The Raconteurs' newest, Help Us Stranger, and the News feature explores Buddy & Julie Miller, The Beatles, and Ireland's Inhaler.

Few artists have pursued as many musical directions with as many impressive collaborators as Ruby Amanfu. It's not inaccurate to call her a Nashville singer songwriter but that old familiar term vastly overlooks Ruby's complexities and subtleties. She's a stylist and a visionary who challenges the distinctions between roots, pop and soul. You might well have seen her on national TV dueting with Jack White but that's just one of her many fascinating pursuits. In 2015, Amanfu released Standing Still was hailed as a magnificent collection of covers including works by Bob Bob Dylan, Brandi Carlile, Kanye West and more. With a stunning cover portrait and a gorgeous soundscape assisted by sought-after producer Mark Howard, it was the most complete statement to date by an artist who'd been on her way for years. Now she's at work on a new album that will bring her songwriting into the mix as well.
The Beyoncé and Jack White collaborator combined vulnerability with swagger in her Newport set.
E4 – Immigrant and chanteuse human Ruby Amanfu and I discuss her life unfolding. She’s an extraordinary and colorful talent in a world that sometimes only sees things in terms of black and white. Together, we celebrate all the crayons, good food, thoughts and words and love. (1:20:31) For more information and links, please visit: HeyHumanpodcast.com
