How can we shift our thinking in order to break a pattern? And how can we take positive action to make transformative changes in our lives? That's the focus of Scott Miller's new book, “Master Mentors Vol. 2.” It examines key insights from 30 of the world's most transformational leadership thinkers – including Seth Godin, Susan Cain, General Stanley McChrystal and more – and provides simple steps to implement the same insights in your own life. In today's episode, Scott joins me to talk about the most valuable lessons he's learned from his own mentor, the concept of transformational insight, the subtle nuances between self-worth, self-esteem and self-confidence, why vulnerability is a key element of leadership, and more. “I think the power of transformation has the power for you to see yourself differently. It has the power for you to challenge your paradigm, your mindset, your belief system, to say, gosh, I always thought about gratitude in this way, but now I'm gonna think about gratitude in this way. Or I thought about what's next for me or my business model. They're personal and professional. I think it's really intended to help kind of shake you to say you've been in this pattern of thinking this line of behavior and just shaking a little bit to say, is that serving you well? Is that serving those around you?” – Scott (06:03) Top 3 Takeaways A mentor can be anyone. “I don't think you have to know or be in an intimate relationship, professional relationship with your mentor at all,” Scott says. It doesn't matter that you can't meet with them for one-on-one guidance; a mentor is anyone who helps you understand how to improve your life, and in the age of podcasts and YouTube, you can get that wisdom in a variety of ways. Try to assume positive intent. Everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes even the most well-intended words come out wrong. A person's words say more about them than they do about you. Self-worth is inherent and unchanging. “Self-esteem and your self-confidence ebbs and flows based on your sense of self and the kind of relationships you're in and the things that you do that you value or don't value,” Scott says. “But your self-worth cannot be changed and no one else can change it.” In This Episode (01:13) Why you don't need to meet your mentor to benefit from their wisdom (05:21) Scott's definition of a transformational insight (07:14) The practical applications of insights, and using them to transform your life (11:30) Bobby Herrera's life-changing bus ride (22:50) Self-worth vs self-esteem vs self-confidence (31:51) “Your future truth should be your present.” (36:03) BJ Fogg and the power of tiny pattern-breaking habits Resources & Links Billy Samoa https://billysamoa.com/ https://www.facebook.com/BillySamoaSaleebey/ https://twitter.com/BillySamoa https://www.instagram.com/billybelieve/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjQ9RSxYqDS4_VxBHNyQJw https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa/ https://billysamoa.com/podcast-archive/ https://billysamoa.com/video-carousel/ https://billysamoa.com/blog-with-sidebar/ Scott Miller https://www.scottjeffreymiller.com/ https://www.facebook.com/scottmillerj1 https://twitter.com/scottmillerj1 https://www.instagram.com/scottjeffreymiller/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmillerj1/ Mentioned https://tinyhabits.com/book/ https://bobby-herrera.com/ https://www.franklincovey.com/speakers-bureau/sean-covey/ This is an encore episode and was originally published on August 26, 2022 Learn more about your ad choices. Episode #254 // We're approached all the time to interview other thought leaders on this podcast. However, since No Bullsh!t Leadership is predominantly a solo cast, we reluctantly decline 99% of these requests. But one email popped into our Inbox a few months ago, and we couldn't resist it: Scott Jeffrey Miller is a speaker, author, and podcaster (sounds familiar, I know!) What's different about Scott is that he's worked for over 25 years with FranklinCovey, the legendary company started by Stephen Covey, which has not one, but three seminal works to draw upon:The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The Speed of Trust, andThe 4 Disciplines of Execution (one of my favorites).Scott has worked with these original thought leaders for decades, and as host of FranklinCovey's On Leadership podcast, he's had access to some of the best-known and highest-profile leaders on the planet. In today's interview, I drill into Scott's deep learning, asking him what it's like to interview the biggest names in business; his experience of writing best-selling books; and what's in store for the future of leadership.Check out Scott's new book here!Connect with Scott on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottjeffreymiller/————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE:Want to boost your leadership capability? Today's guest is Scott J. Miller, Executive Vice President of Thought Leadership for the FranklinCovey Company, author of the best-selling books Management Mess to Leadership Success and Everyone Deserves a Great Manager, and host of the #1 leadership podcast On Leadership. Scott is high-energy, unfiltered, and full of insights he's gleaned throughout his life. Just as in his books, Scott is quick to use his own missteps and tendencies as examples of what not to do when it comes to leadership. On the show, we learn how his boundless energy and ingenious ideas have actually created unintended friction as they often take his team off track and away from the top priorities. He shares how he overcame this challenge, while also revealing the importance of checking his ego as a leader. Scott also shares why he views vulnerability as a leadership competency, tells us the reason he counts on those close to him to give blunt feedback about how he's being perceived, and why he believes there's a big difference between effectiveness vs efficiency when it comes to relationships with his team members. Five things you'll learn from this episode:How to focus on the customer and not just your company's values, goals, missions, etc.Since everyone is an ambassador to your firm, you need individuals to understand where their value proposition is. Why you need to understand your company's money-making model and educate your employees on it.How to share information and build relationships with your competition and/or companies in different industries. Why you should hire people who are smarter than you.Quotables“When you own your mess, you make it safe for others to own theirs. Doesn't every leader wish their team owned all their mistakes and their messes?”— @ScottMiller“Donald Miller, the famous marketing mind that wrote many books, including “Building a StoryBrand,” says, “Most people's messaging is like a cat chasing a rat in a wind chime factory.” To your point, no one cares why you're in business or how many locations… when it's time to expand with you, they might care. But that's not part of why they're hiring you.” — @ScottMiller“Everybody is an ambassador for your brand; they should be trained and they should be advised of the responsibility of how they are a brand ambassador for your company. No matter how large or how small.” — @ScottMiller“Everybody's in sales. Whether your title says it or not.” — @ScottMiller“Great public relations and marketing people have an abundance mentality, not a scarcity mentality.” — @ScottMiller“Tim Ferriss (@tferriss) says, “Delegate, automate…” excuse me, “Eliminate, delegate, automate.” And then I add to that, and then verify, right? Verify it's actually being done.” — @JasonMudd9“Never stop reading ‘cause it will absolutely build your ability to think and reduce your thoughts to writing. Today we discuss self-awareness, business messes, humility, and personal growth. Welcome back to the 94th episode of the Hard Thing Podcast. Today I share my conversation with author and leadership expert, https://www.scottjeffreymiller.com/ (Scott J. Miller). Scott is also the host of the https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/franklincovey-on-leadership-with-scott-miller/id1391164389 (On Leadership with Scott Miller) Podcast produced by https://www.franklincovey.com/ (Franklin Covey). Scott wrote the books "https://www.amazon.com/Marketing-Mess-Brand-Success-Organizations/dp/1642503800/ref=sr_1_3?crid=NJZNRXGFZYZV&dchild=1&keywords=marketing+mess+to+brand+success&qid=1604945260&sprefix=Marketing+Mess+to+Brand+Success%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-3 (Marketing Mess to Brand Success)" and "https://www.amazon.com/Management-Mess-Leadership-Success-Challenges/dp/1642500887/ref=pd_sbs_1?pd_rd_w=OElJB&pf_rd_p=98101395-b70f-4a52-af63-8fac2c513e02&pf_rd_r=2S1GHRYN1DXWCTZS9246&pd_rd_r=4278b361-5420-483a-b4fc-02af80508207&pd_rd_wg=9WvnG&pd_rd_i=1642500887&psc=1 (Management Mess to Leadership Success)". We start off the show talking about some of the hardest things Scott has done. He mentions being a parent, but as far as professional hard things, the hardest thing Scott has done was to lead a seminar where the original speaker could not make the event. We then move on to talk a lot about self-awareness and being humble and genuine. Scott mentions that you should own your mess and learn from it. We talk about the art of knowing how to divulge your mistakes without spilling too much. "Humble leaders are more concerned with what is right than being right." Scott shares this insightful quote and it comes up often throughout the conversation. This lead us to discuss being a good leader, and using vulnerability, but also correct modeling in order to get the best out of your team. There's a small moment where the internet cut out but it comes back on right after that. Scott also mentions that the best people to be managers are not always the best in their field. Management is about leading people, not about being capable in a specialization. We then discuss the necessity of pre-forgiveness, the idea that all members of a team will make mistakes and take risks, but they will be forgiven as long as they work to correct them. Scott shares the insight that it is possible to overcommunicate, despite what most people believe. What is important is that communication is concise, clear, and confident. Scott shares many of his insights on leadership. One that stuck with me is that it's the relationships between people that are the greatest assets of a company, not the people themselves. Therefore fostering relationships is key. "Every business is in the same business. You're in the relationship business." Nearly all conflicts in life come from mismatched expectations. Therefore declare intent and expectations. This will require you to summon some courage. These are more insights brought to you by Scott. We then deliberate on the necessity of trust and the methods on how to be trustworthy and how your team are the ones who decide if you are trustworthy. We later chat about humility and what that really means. This brings up the topic of self-awareness and confidence. Scott defines humility as the intersection of vulnerability and confidence. This involves thinking about what it's like to work with you, be your friend, be married to you and so forth. So ask, what is it like to be married, work with, or whaterever with me? Scott later shares the insight that the best leaders are those that take genuine joy in the success of others. That's how to be a great leader! As always, Scott gave us some action items to use to do more hard things: Try being vulnerable Practice self-awareness Work on humility (confidence x vulnerability) Take joy in your friends' success Know the difference between...

The good and bad news is that no perfect leader exists. So as much as every leader wants to strive for greatness, the reality is that they’re going to hit some obstacles and make messes along the way. Failure isn’t the end, though, and it’s crucial to understand the qualities that the great leaders possess that help them endure through the difficult times. How do they stand after a failure? How can they learn to not just lead through crises like pandemics and recessions, but how can elevate a team and a company through them? This is just some of what we discussed in this episode of Innovation Calling with Franklin Covey’s Executive Vice President of Thought Leadership, Scott J. Miller. Scott is a 20+ year veteran in the Leadership Space, Wall Street Journal Best-Selling Author, and Podcast Host. We dug deep into understanding what makes great leaders great (and it’s not a 100% success rate), how to have the hard conversations in times like this, yet still confidently lead your team. Plus stay til the end where Scott provides two important pieces of advice. Learn what ‘friending-up’ means, in addition to one simple thing co-founders/partners can do to create a lasting business. Here’s The Full Episode Breakdown: 5:26 - Learning more about Scott, and the start of his career at Disney, and how that shaped him into who he is today 7:21 - What’s the difference between being fearless and being reckless, and how can leaders embrace that things might be messy, yet harness fearlessness without being reckless? How does vulnerability play a role in leadership? 10:29 - Why leaders shouldn’t focus on being a genius, but should instead focus on being a genius maker, and why this is crucial to leading great teams. Plus what it means to be an active listener. 16:11 - Why great leaders must possess empathy and a high EQ 19:02 - Can leaders actually learn to be empathetic? 22:04 - In times like we’re living in today, how can leaders learn to approach hard conversations with grace. Plus why it’s important to show as leaders that we don’t have all the answers, and why we can ask permission to have real conversations, which we may get wrong. 27:57 - Why every leader should learn to declare their intent before any conversation begins, and how it can help to diffuse any situation. 31:10 - How does having a strong personality hinder or help people in leadership roles? 33:34 - How to find the balance of family of business, and do we live in a world where there is no longer a separation of personal and professional lives? 37:29 - When it comes to creating a vision, what can leaders do to not just bring a vision to life, but can actually build a legacy where the vision can continue long after the creator is gone. 41:16 - Why leaders must be able to disrupt themselves, detach their egos, and empathic listen, and ask one of the most important questions ‘Am I in the right role.’ 44:33 - Why friending up is such an important concept, and why Scott believes this is one of the best pieces of advice he can give. 49:38 - What one of the most important things partners can do to help their business thrive?

Key Takeaways:As a leader, your job is to get work done with and through people We learn more from our messes than our successes (Challenge #1: Demonstrate humility) Just own your mess, because there's great power in vulnerability and transparency When you own your mess you make it safe for others to own theirs as well Leadership is about deliberation and calibrating your emotions As a leader, make time for relationships as they are everything (Challenge #10: Make time for relationships) Leaders that connect with their people are invincible. People don't quit leaders who love them Effective leaders are very deliberate in declaring their intent (Challenge #4: Declare your Intent) If you want to become and build your own leadership credibility, be very thoughtful around what you are modeling because what you model gets valued Remember, be cognizant of when to be efficient and when to be effective Leadership Resources:Management Mess to Leadership Success: 30 Challenges to Become The Leader You Would Follow, by Scott J. Today’s guest is Scott J. Miller, Executive Vice President of Thought Leadership for the FranklinCovey Company, author of the best-selling books Management Mess to Leadership Success and Everyone Deserves a Great Manager, and host of the #1 leadership podcast On Leadership. Scott is high-energy, unfiltered, and full of insights he’s gleaned throughout his life. Scott also shares why he views vulnerability as a leadership competency, tells us the reason he counts on those close to him to give blunt feedback about how he’s being perceived, and why he believes there’s a big difference between effectiveness vs efficiency when it comes to relationships with his team members.
