The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Mentorship is a critical component of personal and professional growth. A supportive mentor enables mentees to develop critical skills, make better decisions, and achieve their goals faster by providing guidance, perspective, and encouragement along their journey. Furthermore, mentors benefit by expanding their network, reinforcing their knowledge, and deriving satisfaction from contributing to the success of others. Mentorship is a valuable, reciprocal relationship that fosters learning, development, and change for both the mentor and mentee. In the podcast, Scott Miller shares his insight into how mentorship can impact individuals in various aspects of life. He offers personal stories and experiences, highlighting the importance of recognizing the potential mentorship opportunities that exist beyond traditional boundaries. By emphasizing the powerful and transformative effects of mentorship, Miller encourages listeners to actively pursue mentoring relationships that enrich personal and professional lives, and explains the 13 roles mentors play, based on information in his book The Ultimate Guide to Great Mentorship. In this episode: Unveil the importance of mentorship and why anyone can be a mentor. Decode the 13 essential roles of mentors in guiding their mentees. Realize the value of genuine feedback and vulnerability in fostering strong mentor-mentee connections. Examine the lifelong benefits that mentorship can provide for you and your career. Identify how everything from setting boundaries to celebrating matters in the mentor-mentee relationship (and some language to help you along your way!) Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Scott Miller is a multi best-selling author, special advisor on thought leadership for the Franklin Covey Company, and a globally celebrated keynote speaker. He has previously been a guest on The Brainy Business podcast to discuss his books Marketing Mess to Brand Success and Management Mess to Leadership Success. In today's episode, he talks about his new book, The Ultimate Guide to Great Mentorship. 00:06:42 - Importance of Mentorship, Mentorship is a key part of companies' employee development plans. However, most people don't know what to do as a mentor. Scott wrote The Ultimate Guide to Great Mentorship to help people become better mentors. The book outlines 13 roles that all mentors can play, which will help them ask better questions, be more patient, and be more thoughtful. 00:10:16 - Informal Mentorship, Scott shares the story of how Bruce Williams, a radio host who has since passed away, became a mentor to him without ever knowing it. This highlights the importance of informal mentorship and how people can redefine what mentorship looks like. For example, by following favorite bloggers or podcasts, those thought leaders can be a mentor to you (even if you never talk to them and they don't know your name). 00:14:21 - The Power of Mentorship, Scott and Melina discuss the impact of mentorship on individuals and society, highlighting the importance of having a framework for effective mentorship. Scott introduces his book, The Ultimate Guide to Great Mentorship, and introduces the 13 roles a mentor can play. 00:17:32 - The 13 Roles of Great Mentorship, Scott discusses the 13 roles a mentor can play outlined in his book, emphasizing that a mentor may not necessarily play all 13 roles and why they need to adapt their role depending on the mentee's situation (you aren't just one “type” of mentor, you need to wear multiple hats during your time as a mentor). He highlights the importance of having an awareness of these roles and how they can be used to support a mentee effectively. 00:21:01 - The Importance of Validation in Mentorship, Scott shares his personal story of being validated by a stranger at a young age, which had a profound impact on his life. He emphasizes the role of the Validator in mentorship and the power of validating a mentee's genius, skill, and talent. He provides tips for how to effectively validate a mentee and how this can be a transition point for them to move towards more effective mindsets. 00:23:05 - Scott's Six-Step Closing Process, Scott introduces his six-step closing process, which includes naming what has been learned from the mentee, validating their genius, and setting them on their way. He emphasizes the importance of taking away something from each mentor session and using it to improve oneself. 00:28:34 - Caution for the Validator, The Validator role in mentoring should be used with care. Rather than validating mentees for small actions, acknowledge their genius, and give them lifelong courage to retrieve it when they need it. 00:32:41 - The Flagger Role, The Flagger is the challenger on steroids, who stops a conversation in its tracks to challenge an idea. Diplomatically flagging issues prevents potential conflict in the future. 00:37:57 - The Boundary Setter, Setting boundaries is an uncomfortable yet essential conversation that every mentor needs to have. Mismatched or unfulfilled expectations cause most conflicts in life, and setting clear boundaries is key to avoiding any potential issues. Scott provides some sample language the listener can use in their own mentoring sessions immediately. 00:41:24 - Honing in on Boundaries, It's important to have a clear understanding of each other's boundaries in mentorship. Starting with an uncomfortable conversation about boundaries can prevent future awkwardness and allow for a more productive relationship. 00:42:53 - Importance of Situational Mentorship, Scott emphasizes the importance of situational mentorship and tailoring conversations to the mentee's needs. He suggests checking out greatmentorship.com for videos and tools, and invites people to connect with him on social media. 00:44:27 - Scott's Impact on Melina, Melina thanks Scott for being a mentor to her, and Scott reflects on how anyone can be a mentor (with or without realizing it). They encourage listeners to reflect on who has impacted their lives and consider sharing their gratitude with them. 00:45:00 - What is Mentorship?, Melina and Scott discuss the meaning of mentorship and how it can be informal and brief. They encourage listeners to reflect on the mentors in their lives and consider sharing their impact with them. 00:46:19 - Reflecting on Impactful Moments, Melina encourages listeners to reflect on small or big moments that were impactful and consider who was part of them. She suggests telling mentors how they have impacted their lives and invites listeners to connect with her and Scott on social media. 00:46:30 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation. I recently had the honor of interviewing Scott Miller again regarding his latest books entitled "Master Mentors: 30 Transformative Insights from Our Greatest Minds". This is not the first time that I am interviewing Scott, the first time I interviewed him was in July of 2019 for his book "Management Mess to Leadership Success" He again guested in the show when we discussed his newly released book "Marketing Mess to Brand Success: 30 Challenges to Transform Your Organization's Brand (and Your Own) (Brand Marketing) (Mess to Success)" in May of this year.
Scott Miller knows what it's like to fail. He was demoted from his first leadership position after only three weeks—and that's just one of several messy management experiences on his two-decade journey to leadership success. Everyone fails. But something sets Scott apart: transparency and willingness to openly share his story in a way that is forthright, relatable, and applicable. In this episode Scott shares lots of tips and ideas you can implement in your business, regardless of its size. Many challenges that companies face stem from a disconnect between sales and marketing teams. Finger pointing between the two departments, who ultimately have the same end-goal, can infect an organization. Next to reputational damage, it is a CEO's worst nightmare. I recently welcomed back a great leader and friend to the Reboot Chronicles podcast, Scott Miller, best-selling author, fellow podcast host, leadership coach, columnist and advisor to FranklinCovey, to talk about his latest book, Marketing Mess to Brand Success. Inspired to help sales and marketing teams get on the same page, Scott's new book was pulled from his 10 years of experience as a public company CMO and various sales and leadership roles. He strongly believes that sales and marketing have to “stop the finger pointing, get on the same boat and start rowing the same direction.” Similar to the other books in his Mess series, this book outlines 30 challenges that he had in his marketing role which every marketer needs to understand and learn from his mistakes. No matter what you are doing, you will enjoy his new book. I laughed at many of the challenges when reading the book as they were messes I've participated in, in my past CMO and CRO roles. Bruise hard and heal fast While it sounds painful, to bruise hard and heal fast is valuable life advice. Throughout all aspects of our lives, lots of people give unsolicited feedback. This is especially true for marketers, because everyone thinks they can put on their marketing cap and give you their opinion on your campaigns and branding efforts. Scott advises to be the open-minded marketer who is open to other stakeholders' insights. Take the feedback. Forget the bad suggestions. Implement the good. Then heal fast and pivot. Don't go down with one campaign that you're especially passionate about. Think longer-term about protecting the power you have over the brand. Good advice, many of us can relate to, I definitely fell on some swords I should not have when I was a CMO of a large B2B company in my 20s and when CMO of LG Zenith. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rebootchronicles/message

Have you ever messed up, (whether it's in your personal or business life) and thought, “oh geez, I really screwed up. I have NO idea how I'm going to recover?!”Gay and Mike have both created quite a few messes in our business lives that we've managed to clean up.Today they're going to talk about how to turn colossal messes into successes. They have a special guest, Scott Jeffrey Miller, author of a brand new book called Marketing Mess to Brand Success. He's an expert at turning messes into success and FILLED with all kinds of great ideas. There are 30 challenges that he talks about in the book. One of them is about storytelling and he has a great story about an interview he did with Matthew McConaughey. You absolutely want to listen to and watch this episode. Gay said reading Scott's book was the highlight of his week. He was amazed at how much of Scott's heart and mind he put into the book.Scott worked at Franklin Covey for a long time. He's had the opportunity to see every imaginable mess, both internally and with his own clients. Right now he's in the middle of one of the hardest things in the world to do: his own book launch. He was the Chief Marketing Officer for Franklin Covey, (where they sold 50 million copies of their books) so he's been through 30 book launches over the last decade. “What worked last year isn't working this year and what's working this year isn't going to work next year.”He says the key to a book launch right now is being extremely agile, writing a great book and taking responsibility for all the marketing. (Because the publisher isn't going to do it for you)His biggest advice is never rest on your laurels. As they always do with our guests, Gay and Mike asked Scott what some of his “Big Leaps” that got him to where he is today. Here's what he had to say:“Quitting a seven figure job in the middle of a pandemic and going out on my own as an entrepreneur. That's the biggest leap I've ever taken.”Last November, after a year of negotiation with the board and the CEO, he left his shares on the table, and left the company amicably. He's still an ambassador for the company and hosts their podcast but he left a seven figure job, opened up his own brand, and never looked back.Another major leap happened 25 years ago when he moved from Orlando to Utah as a single Catholic boy. He also moved to Chicago where he knew no one and again to London where he knew no one. “I'm not fearless, but I've got courage in excess.”He wasn't raised to take risks, in fact the complete opposite. Go to school, then college and become an engineer, doctor or lawyer. Scot never did that. He was always a salesperson / marketer / author. He's not quite sure what gave him the courage to be a risk taker other than always wanting more. His father always said he wasn't worried about him because he had “champagne taste on a beer budget,” so he was always confident he would figure it out. Plus he had a great work ethic instilled by parents. He realized young that “if it's gonna be, it's up to me,” and that's been his motto for most of his life. This is Scott Jeffery Miller, Gay Hendricks and Mike Koenigs in our studios, connecting by Zoom!Scott's new book, Marketing Mess to Brand Success is a really great one and it includes a set of cards that have the chapters on them. It's such a great marketing tool! Here are Mike's favorites from his “30 Challenges to Transform Your Organization's Brand (and Your Own)” #8 - Lots of Stuff Won't Work #3 - Stay Close to the Cash #4 - Become the Leader of Business Development #9 - Don't Only Do What You Know and Like Best #23 - Leverage Your Promoters #25 - Build and Model Consistent Brand Standards #28 - Develop Your Storytelling Craft You're going to have to Tune in and Watch the whole episode to hear Scott go into detail about Mike's favorite challenges PLUS he'll tell you his favorites and WHY. I really love the way Scott puts his books together, broken into 30 chapters with great, brain-friendly tips that you can begin implementing one day at a time. Essentially, the thought is that you can take a month and learn one lesson each day to uplevel in that particular area. As you'll hear more in the conversation, this is the second book in a planned series of 10; the first of which Scott discussed Management Mess to Leadership Success last time he was on the show. Today is about going from Marketing Mess to Brand Success, plus a funny story about a popular product that was originally called the “I-Suck” – can you guess what it is? Hear the answer and learn more about Scott and his work in the show. Show Notes: [00:06] In today's episode, I'm delighted to bring back Scott Miller of Franklin Covey. [01:17] Today is about going from a marketing mess to brand success. [04:15] Scott shares more about who he is and what he does. He is a 25 year associate of the Franklin Covey Company. [05:00] Today, we focus on Marketing Mess to Brand Success – the second of a ten-book series. [05:56] If you have something to say, write a book. Your book has not been written until you have written your book. [07:44] Scott's books are very practical and they all follow the same format with 30 challenges. The chapters are very intentionally breezy and short. [09:14] There is enormous power in teaching through your messes. [10:38] Scott shares his favorite marketing messes from the book. [12:51] A lesson he learned is that you can't control all the outcomes of a marketing campaign. He shares some of the lessons he has learned in his book. [14:49] Melina shares her own funny story from a marketing campaign she was part of. [17:25] It's The Customer, Stupid is the first challenge in his book. As a marketer, you have to be the voice of the customer. [18:55] The best salesperson isn't the person who has committed their third-quarter goal to memory, they've committed their client's third-quarter goal to memory. [20:07] We tend to market the way we like to be marketed to. Don't always do what you like and know best. It may not always be the right vehicle. [22:34] Marketers need to be close to the cash. [23:27] A marketer's number one job is to generate revenue-paying clients. [26:38] There is a massive difference between facts and your feelings, emotions, and opinions. [27:48] As marketers have you done your research? Do you know what circumstance your client is in or are you guessing? [29:38] What you say are the facts might just be your own biases creeping in because you are so passionate about your idea. [30:22] 93% of organizations achieve success with an emergent strategy, not their deliberate strategy. They often have to pivot and search for new opportunities. [32:02] It is important to speak your customers' language. [33:15] The biggest messaging mistake people make is that they tell their story. They don't tell a story that their client can find themselves in. [36:01] Never forget you have two buyers. You have an internal and external buyer. [37:58] Marketing is very reactive. Branding is this touchstone and is proactive. [39:35] You have to build a brand and earn a brand with some of the outcomes of your marketing efforts. You need to have a strong marketing strategy that helps you build revenue and a brand. [40:07] Your brand is a result of this: did you make and keep a promise? Brands are hard to build. [41:19] Scott shares his story about a brand being a memory with Ralph Lauren. [44:51] Melina shares her closing thoughts. [45:47] Melina's first book, What Your Customer Wants and Can't Tell You is officially available on Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, Book Depository, and Booktopia. Thanks for listening. Today we discuss self-awareness, business messes, humility, and personal growth. Welcome back to the 94th episode of the Hard Thing Podcast. Today I share my conversation with author and leadership expert, https://www.scottjeffreymiller.com/ (Scott J. Miller). Scott is also the host of the https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/franklincovey-on-leadership-with-scott-miller/id1391164389 (On Leadership with Scott Miller) Podcast produced by https://www.franklincovey.com/ (Franklin Covey). Scott wrote the books "https://www.amazon.com/Marketing-Mess-Brand-Success-Organizations/dp/1642503800/ref=sr_1_3?crid=NJZNRXGFZYZV&dchild=1&keywords=marketing+mess+to+brand+success&qid=1604945260&sprefix=Marketing+Mess+to+Brand+Success%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-3 (Marketing Mess to Brand Success)" and "https://www.amazon.com/Management-Mess-Leadership-Success-Challenges/dp/1642500887/ref=pd_sbs_1?pd_rd_w=OElJB&pf_rd_p=98101395-b70f-4a52-af63-8fac2c513e02&pf_rd_r=2S1GHRYN1DXWCTZS9246&pd_rd_r=4278b361-5420-483a-b4fc-02af80508207&pd_rd_wg=9WvnG&pd_rd_i=1642500887&psc=1 (Management Mess to Leadership Success)". We start off the show talking about some of the hardest things Scott has done. He mentions being a parent, but as far as professional hard things, the hardest thing Scott has done was to lead a seminar where the original speaker could not make the event. We then move on to talk a lot about self-awareness and being humble and genuine. Scott mentions that you should own your mess and learn from it. We talk about the art of knowing how to divulge your mistakes without spilling too much. "Humble leaders are more concerned with what is right than being right." Scott shares this insightful quote and it comes up often throughout the conversation. This lead us to discuss being a good leader, and using vulnerability, but also correct modeling in order to get the best out of your team. There's a small moment where the internet cut out but it comes back on right after that. Scott also mentions that the best people to be managers are not always the best in their field. Management is about leading people, not about being capable in a specialization. We then discuss the necessity of pre-forgiveness, the idea that all members of a team will make mistakes and take risks, but they will be forgiven as long as they work to correct them. Scott shares the insight that it is possible to overcommunicate, despite what most people believe. What is important is that communication is concise, clear, and confident. Scott shares many of his insights on leadership. One that stuck with me is that it's the relationships between people that are the greatest assets of a company, not the people themselves. Therefore fostering relationships is key. "Every business is in the same business. You're in the relationship business." Nearly all conflicts in life come from mismatched expectations. Therefore declare intent and expectations. This will require you to summon some courage. These are more insights brought to you by Scott. We then deliberate on the necessity of trust and the methods on how to be trustworthy and how your team are the ones who decide if you are trustworthy. We later chat about humility and what that really means. This brings up the topic of self-awareness and confidence. Scott defines humility as the intersection of vulnerability and confidence. This involves thinking about what it's like to work with you, be your friend, be married to you and so forth. So ask, what is it like to be married, work with, or whaterever with me? Scott later shares the insight that the best leaders are those that take genuine joy in the success of others. That's how to be a great leader! As always, Scott gave us some action items to use to do more hard things: Try being vulnerable Practice self-awareness Work on humility (confidence x vulnerability) Take joy in your friends' success Know the difference between...
There are two fundamentals to a successful book launch. One, write a good book. Number two, make sure your social media following is significant. That's the message from Scott Miller, who's published three books in the past two years and has three more coming out this year! “Most publishers won't even speak to you if you don't have 50,000 Instagram followers and 100,000 YouTube subscribers, and you've maxed your Linkedin and maxed your Instagram and your Facebook,” Scott tells host Josh Steimle. SOCIAL MEDIA ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESSFUL BOOK LAUNCH “Too many authors say ‘I don't want to play that game'. Then you're not going to sell a book. There is no book promotion without social media. Get over your social media phobia, and it'll take you two years minimally to build your social media.” Scott is author of Management Mess to Leadership Success. In May 2021 Marketing Mess to Brand Success: 30 Challenges to Transform Your Organization's Brand (and Your Own). September this year will see the publication of Master Mentors: 30 Transformative Insights from Our Greatest Minds Scott was recruited 25 years ago by Dr. Stephen R. Covey's team to work at FranklinCovey. He recently served as chief marketing officer there and is now a senior advisor at FranklinCovey on thought leadership. “Writing a book is about 20% of the process of publishing a book. I'll do 125 podcasts just for Marketing Mess alone. “Ninety-five percent or more of all the marketing comes from you: it's podcast, webinars, speeches, keynotes, your website, social media, sending out galley copies to anybody and everybody,” he explains, noting that in contrast, the publisher's role is to edit, print, and distribute your book. Scott stresses that his social media success is often due to the fact that he focuses on others. “I post two and three times a day in my social media, putting a spotlight on others, making sure I'm an abundant contributor. I nurture my social media extremely methodically, hopefully abundantly and generously.” DON'T LET ANYONE TALK YOU OUT OF YOUR BOOK While all the marketing and promotion may sound daunting to some authors, Scott encourages entrepreneurs not to be dissuaded. “Don't let anybody talk you out of your book,” says Scott. “Yes, the world needs your book if your book is good. So if you've got a book in you get it out of you.” Next up, think about why you want to write your book, and be clear on that. Is it because you want to go become a speaker, you want to build your brand? Do you want to become a consultant? Understanding the why behind writing your book is important, because no makes money on a book. After that, determine what kind of writing process you will use to organize your thoughts and your book. Some authors use cards, while others, including Scott, use Post It notes. Next, think about your writing schedule, and do what works for you. For Scott, that means being at his desk every morning from 4 a.m. to 5:30 every day non-stop. Scott encourages entrepreneur authors to be forward when it comes to reaching out to publishers - if that's the route you choose to go. He says: “Every publisher is always looking for new books. So don't feel like you should be embarrassed or walk on eggshells. Every publishing house is always looking for new authors and new books.” LINKS Twitter.com Instagram.com Facebook LinkedIn.com ScottJeffreyMiller.com SUBSCRIBE TO THE PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or anywhere else you listen to podcasts. The impact of COVID-19 is being felt worldwide, but not evenly. We look at how women have an even heavier burden, particularly with kids unable to attend classes. Also, with HBO Max officially launched, we join many others in asking: what exactly is this service? How's it different from HBO Go or NBO Now? It's the perfect case study of a marketing mess. We also recommend an excellent interview with famed US writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and why it's in your own best interest to confront the inevitable decline in your professional capability.
