The MindBodyBrain Project
Understanding Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation with Corey Jackson

The MindBodyBrain Project

In this enlightening conversation, I sat down with Corey Jackson, a prominent figure in mindfulness research and emotional regulation, to explore the intricate world of mindfulness and metacognitive approaches to emotion. We traversed through the realms of Buddhist psychology, the impact of mindfulness on anxiety and depression, and the importance of attentional control. What You'll Learn: Mindfulness and Metacognitive Therapy: Corey discussed the differences between traditional cognitive-behavioural models and metacognitive models. He detailed how the latter focuses on metacognitive beliefs and how adjusting these beliefs can affect anxiety and depression more effectively. This model, often overlooked, offers a promising avenue for those dealing with mental health challenges. Attention and Its Role: Corey and I delved into the critical aspect of attention in shaping our reality. Drawing parallels with William James's theories and contemporary neuroscience, we examined how controlled attention can lead to better emotional regulation. Corey emphasised the importance of knowing not just what you pay attention to, but how you attend to it, and how this awareness can transform your emotional and psychological well-being. Traditional vs. Modern Mindfulness Practices: A significant portion of our conversation focused on comparing traditional Buddhist mindfulness practices with the modern, often simplified versions popularised in the West. Corey highlighted the rich history and depth of traditional practices, which often encompass a broader system of mental cultivation beyond just breath awareness. The Importance of Judgments: We explored the role of judgments in our mental and emotional lives. Corey challenged the popular Western notion of nonjudgmental awareness, explaining how traditional practices encouraged good judgment to guide behaviour aligned with personal goals and virtues. The Role of Emotions: Corey shared insights from his work with emotional balance, particularly how emotions serve as signposts indicating important events. We discussed strategies from both Eastern and Western philosophies to manage emotions, transform emotional states, and cultivate a balanced emotional life. Key Takeaways: Mindfulness as a Multifaceted Tool Attention and Emotional Control Judgment is Crucial Traditional Practices Hold Rich Insights Emotions are Indicative, Not the Enemy Resources: Visit Corey Jackson's website for more about his work and offerings. Explore Amishi Jha's research on mindfulness and attention for further insights into the neuroscience behind these practices Support and Share: If you found this conversation insightful, consider exploring Corey's online courses to further your understanding and practice of mindfulness and emotional balance. Cultivating emotional balance is a skill that benefits everyone, and Corey’s expert guidance offers a valuable path toward achieving it. 00:59 PhD Journey and Challenges 02:45 Exploring Mindfulness Mechanisms 04:30 Metacognitive Model and Therapy 08:15 Traditional vs. Modern Mindfulness 10:13 Brooding vs. Reflective Rumination 12:45 Contemplative Practices and Wisdom 17:26 Secularisation of Mindfulness 29:08 Acceptance Commitment Therapy and Observing Thoughts 29:59 Comparing Buddhist and Tibetan Views on Thought Observation 31:23 Attention and Attentional Control in Various Fields 33:20 The Role of Attention in Tibetan Buddhism 35:07 Managing Anger and Emotional Reactions 37:28 The Stoic Approach to Anger 39:14 Paul Ekman's Insights on Emotions 44:17 Controlled vs. Captured Attention 50:41 Brain Activity Patterns in Meditators 53:15 Corey Jackson's Work and Online Programs 55:13 Concluding Thoughts and Future ProjectsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"The absolute key thing which God needs from the Church is a commitment to the Word of God."—Rev Phill Sacre We are joined once again by Rev Phill Sacre—an ordained minister (Church of England), housechurch leader, and blogger on Substack—for a conversation on "Plausibility Structures and the Church." Our conversation grows out of a podcast series that Phill produced late last year called "How the church was sabotaged", in which he reflected upon a 1980s book by the famous Christian thinker and writer Os Guinness. Though published over 40 years ago, Guinness's "The Gravedigger File: Papers on the Subversion of the Modern Church" caught Phill's attention because of its apparent prescience on a number of important cultural issues facing the church today. So, please join us as I "get in on the conversation", and we discuss what's happened to so many modern churches, and think about ways in which we might "push back" in the culture to reveal the Gospel's "plausibility structure" to church and world alike. (Phill is a Christian minister. Ordained in the Church of England, he formerly served in a parish on the Essex coast, but now leads an independent housechurch. He also runs the online ministries "Understand the Bible" and "Sacred Musings : Thinking Christianly about the World" on Substack.) [For show notes please visit https://themindrenewed.com]

Secularism is conventionally understood to be the separation of state and religion. However, according to the Indian Constitution, citizens are governed by differing sets of personal laws that depend upon their religion. What, then, is the meaning of Indian secularism? Turkey and France are both secular countries with no official state religions. At the same time, wearing a fez became illegal in Turkey in 1925, and wearing a hijab within public school premises was banned in France in 2004. If the state interferes in matters of religion, is a country truly secular? In this episode of All Things Policy, Rohan Pai and Shreya Ramakrishnan discuss these difficult questions by analysing the history of secularism, and its various, often paradoxical, definitions across time and geography. *Apologies that there was a slight technical problem with the podcast recording this morning. This is now sorted and you can download the track again directly from http://podcast.firebrandnotes.com/This week on Into the Pray we are very grateful to talk with David Robertson (aka The Wee Flea), former senior minister of St. Peter's Church in Dundee and now Director of Third Space in Australia. David and Nick produced some videos a couple of years back about some critically important issues relating to both the Church and the socio-cultural disintegration that we are all witnessing today. (You can find those via Nick's YouTube channel). In today's podcast, David says, "Scotland has descended and secularised quicker than any nation in history."If this is true - and it may well be - the British Church need to recognise that a proportional response of humility, repentance and prayer is the gracious, God-given order of the day, not harking back to previous times in our history where a genuine call to repentance may or may not have been issued or nationally observed. During the reign of King George 73 years ago, marriage still meant in British law what God says it means, millions of people hadn't been torn limb from limb via the horrors of abortion and our children weren't being told that they could select their gender or experiment safely with pornography - we have to get real!David and Nick may not quite see eye to eye on the place and responsibility of the Church in this particular conversation but they do both agree that until we corporately "come to the end of ourselves" (the exact focus of the book, Body Zero) there can be no hope for reformation, renewal or revival. You can read David's blog here: https://theweeflea.com You can find our more about Third Space here: https://thirdspace.org.au/third-space/about-usPlease let us know what you think!Until next week, Come, Lord!Love in Jesus, N&M xp.s. Suicide by secularisation: how the churches are dying

Today’s episode of Holy Smoke exposes the extent to which ordinary Christians have been betrayed by their own bishops. This is a process that began decades ago – but it is only this year, during the coronavirus pandemic, that we’ve seen just how corrupted church leaders have become by secularisation. The need to close churches for public worship during the lockdown meant that, for the first time in many decades, Anglican and Catholic bishops were able to exercise a small but significant degree of secular power – something they desperately crave. In doing so, they displayed a mixture of ruthlessness, vanity, hypocrisy and stupidity that will accelerate the decline of their own institutions. This episode will tell you things that bishops – in Rome and America as well as Britain – are anxious to conceal from their flocks. Please tune in!

The gospel is the power of God at work in human life. Of course, the devil will not be happy to see men who are under his dominion to encounter the gospel. So what does he do? He intimidates Christians not to share the gospel. Secularisation has been hyped to counter the advancement of the gospel. Today, less missionaries are in the field than before. Because everyone cares about his own, none the things of Jesus Christ. Do you know that soul winning are the heartbeat of God? Do you know that this year alone you have asked God so much for yourself but has not attempted to win a soul even for every month God gives you life? In most Christians' prayer life, praying for missionaries, more labourers to be sent into the field is virtually not part. Jesus is coming again.

The media and education loudly proclaim that we are a secular society. Sociologists tend to believe that affluence, universal education, scientific and medical advances mean there is no longer any need to believe in God. They say that secularisation and modernity have gone hand in hand. But how does this claim stand up to scrutiny? Has history been distorted to make secularisation theory more plausible? And has belief persisted in a way which undermines the cherished theory?

David Gilbert considers the relationship between faith and suburbia with focus on migration. Part of the OMPAS Seminar Series Trinity 2012: Everyday multiculturalism. Whereas multiculturalism has been steadily 'downgraded' on the policy agenda both in the UK and other parts of Europe during the 2000s, social life at neighbourhood level is increasingly characterised by an everyday negotiation of categorical boundaries such as migration histories, religions, migrant statuses, and socio-economic disparities. This series will focus on emerging empirical research and methodologies that engage with such localised, intercultural processes. The presentations are based on findings from a range of different settings, including London, northern England, the Netherlands and Germany, and also focusing on new 'zones of encounter' that go beyond the traditional inner-city perspective.
