Andrew Arndt is back on the podcast today. He's a pastor and author who's challenging how we typically understand the gospel. His new book, "A Strange and Gracious Light," explores what it means to see Jesus as a living presence that intersects with our real, complicated lives. We'll discuss how the gospel isn't just about personal salvation or afterlife insurance, but a transformative story that speaks directly into our current cultural moment - with all its complexity, pain, and potential. Andrew brings a fresh, albeit an ancient perspective on how Jesus encounters us in our everyday struggles, political tensions, and personal challenges. This conversation is about reimagining the good news of Jesus as something far more expansive and immediate than we've traditionally understood. We'll explore what it means to experience Christ's presence in a way that's both deeply personal and broadly transformative. So join us as we facilitate encounters with the living God. Andrew Arndt is the Lead Pastor of New Life East (one of seven congregations of New Life Church in Colorado Springs), where he also hosts the Essential Church podcast, a weekly conversation designed to strengthen the thinking of church and ministry leaders. Prior to joining New Life's team, he served as Lead Pastor of Bloom Church: a neo-monastic, charismatic, liturgical, justice-driven network of house churches in Denver. He received his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, is working on his Doctor of Ministry at Western Theological Seminary, and has written for Missio Alliance, Patheos, The Other Journal, and Mere Orthodoxy. Where is your treasure? Where are your priorities? Are there any changes that need made to measure up to God's priority? In this episode, Jeff and Joe discuss: Learning from a young age to organize life around the Kingdom of God.Helping Christians to think Christianly around work, wealth, and capital.Introducing God's rest and peace into existence through our work.Using our wealth of restorative purposes for God's purpose of reconciliation.Understanding the basic principle of tithing then experiencing the joy of radical generosity beyond that.  Key Takeaways: The Earth and everything in it is the Lord's. We are stewards of His trust. We are administrators to advance His purposes by developing and cultivating the wealth that He has placed in creation through hard work and creativity.Love God and love your neighbor as yourself - the two great commandments. Are your financial priorities honoring those principles? Two of the Ten Commandments are dedicated to the issue of property and how we honor God and others with it.That begins to provide a basis and a foundation for thinking about property. You can only be disillusioned if you have illusions. If we make wealth an idol, it will be an empty promise and will never deliver.  "We use our money, our wealth, for restorative purposes, to advance God's purpose of reconciling all things to Jesus Christ. That's bringing all things into obedience and submission." —  Rev. Are we forgetting the rebellious, defiant nature of Jesus? Have we overlooked his active resistance to the political and religious hierarchies of his time, and his challenging calls for us to be good neighbors rather than good citizens? That's what we'll be unpacking in our fascinating conversation with our guest, Domenic Scarcella, author of the book "Good Neighbor, Bad Citizen".   Domenic provides an intriguing reading of Jesus' teachings, bringing to light the elements that often get overlooked in contemporary Christianity. We dissect the Stations of the Cross, Jesus's nonviolent resistance, and how to use his book as a tool for contemplation.  As we journey through these narratives, we confront the controversial topic of police violence and its relationship to the Christian faith. This episode holds some challenging viewpoints that question the traditional support of law enforcement and military by modern Christians. The non-violent teachings of Jesus and his brutal treatment by the 'good cops' of his day serve as the crux of this discussion. We highlight that violence, be it personal or outsourced, remains a contradiction to the teachings of Jesus, and is thus a sin. We also carve out time to talk about the unfathomable nature of God, and the significance of the Holy Spirit, offering some new food for thought on the intersection of faith and politics.  Domenic gives us a glimpse into his new sub-stack, extending an invitation to join the ongoing conversation about Christian ethics. As we round off, we reflect on the essence of community, shared faith, and why being both a good neighbor and a bad citizen, as Jesus was, might just be the unconventional perspective we need today. The synod process in the Catholic Church is attracting interest from other Christian denominations, including from unexpected quarters.  In this episode, I interviewed Neil Hudson, a Pentecostal pastor for 30 years. He is a senior leader at the Elim church in Salford, the northwest of England, and has worked at the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity.  Neil recently took part in a significant synod gathering of Christian thinkers and leaders at Durham University to discuss the synodal process and admits that a generation ago, a Pentecostal minister would never have participated in a Catholic-led event.  Nevertheless, he says that “what is happening in the Catholic Church has to be, to my mind at least, reflective of the Gospel” and that Pope Francis has connected with Christians from the Charismatic and Pentecostal traditions.  “This Pope seems to speak the language that would not be out of place in a Pentecostal setting,” he says.   Neal warns that the synod process should avoid becoming a series of “committee meetings” and needs to connect with ordinary believers and build up people's faith. He insists that the decline of the church is not inevitable and finishes our discussion with an instructive — and very synodal — story about accompanying those searching for God.  Producer: Silvia Sacco Editor: Jamie Weston

As a great river flows by a thousand channels through fertile country, so let your wealth run through many conduits to the homes of the poor. Wells that are drawn from flow the better; left unused, they go foul…Money kept standing idle is worthless; but moving and changing hands it benefits the community and brings increase…“I am wronging no one,” you say, “I am merely holding on to what is mine.” What is yours! Who gave it to you so that you could bring it into life with you? Why, you are like a man who pinches a seat at the theater at the expense of latecomers, claiming ownership of what was for common use. That's what the rich are like; having seized what belongs to all, they claim it as their own on the basis of having got there first. Whereas if everyone took for himself enough to meet his immediate needs and released the rest for those in need of it, there would be no rich and no poor.Did you not come naked out of the womb? Will you not go naked back into the earth? (Job 1) So where did the wealth you now enjoy come from? If you say “from nowhere,” you deny God, ignore the Creator, are ungrateful to the Giver. If you say “from God,” then explain why it was given to you. When a man strips another of his clothes, he is called a thief. Should not a man who has the power to clothe the naked but does not do so be called the same? The bread in your larder belongs to the hungry. The cloak in your wardrobe belongs to the naked. The shoes you allow to rot belong to the barefoot. The money in your vaults belongs to the destitute. You do injustice to every man whom you could help but do not.If you are rich, how can you remain so? If you cared for the poor, it would consume your wealth. When each one receives a little for one's needs, and when all owners distribute their means simultaneously for the care of the needy, no one will possess more than his neighbor.Yet it is plain that you have very many lands. Why? Because you have subordinated the relief and comfort of many to your convenience. And so, the more you abound in your riches, the more you are deficient in love.Saint John Chrysostom (347–407 AD):If a poor man comes to you asking for bread, there is no end of complaints and reproaches and charges of idleness; you upbraid him, insult him, jeer at him. You fail to realize that you too are idle and yet God grants you gifts. Now don't tell me that you actually work hard. If you call earning money, making business deals, and caring for your possessions “work”, I say, “No, that is not work. But alms, prayers, the protection of the injured and the like – these are genuine work.” You charge the poor with idleness; I charge you with corrupt behavior.Don't you realize that, as the poor man withdraws silently, sighing and in tears, you actually thrust a sword into yourself, that it is you who received the more serious wound?Let us learn that as often as we have not given alms, we shall be punished like those who have plundered. For what we possess is not personal property; it belongs to all.God generously gives all things that are much more necessary than money, such as air, water, fire, the sun – all such things. All these things are to be distributed equally to all.“Mine” and “thine” – these chilling words which introduce innumerable wars into the world – should be eliminated from the church. Then the poor would not envy the rich, because there would be no rich. Neither would the poor be despised by the rich, for there would be no poor. All things would be in common.Wesley: I am pained for you that are “rich in this world.” Do you give all you can? You who receive five hundred pounds a year, and spend only two hundred, do you give three hundred back to God? If not, you certainly rob God of that three hundred. You that receive two hundred, and spend but one, do you give God the other hundred? If not, you rob him of just so much. “Nay, may I not do what I will with my own?” Here lies the ground of your mistake. It is not your own. It cannot be, unless you are Lord of heaven and earth. “However, I must provide for my children.” Certainly. But how? By making them rich? Then you will probably make them Heathens, as some of you have done already. “What shall I do, then?” Leave them enough to live on, not in idleness and luxury, but by honest industry. And if you have not children, upon what scriptural or rational principle can you leave a groat behind you more than will bury you? I pray consider, what are you the better for what you leave behind you? What does it signify, whether you leave behind you ten thousand pounds, or ten thousand shoes and boots? O leave nothing behind you! Send all you have before you into a better world! Lend it, lend it all unto the Lord, and it shall be paid you again! Is there any danger that his truth should fail? It is fixed as the pillars of heaven. Haste, haste, my brethren, haste! Lest you be called away before you settled what you have on this security! When this is done, you may boldly say, “Now I have nothing to do but to die! Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit! Come, Lord Jesus! Come quickly! Title: Ten Professors Found in Contemporary Christianity Speaker: Dr. H. T. Spence Event: Wednesday Evening Sermon Date: December 28, 2022 Summary: Not everyone that professes to be a Christian is a biblical Christian, but they associate themselves with Christianity. The true Christian must be very careful not to be drawn into the friendship of such individuals. Christians must be very careful not to be drawn into compromise with such people. Weddings, funerals, and family gatherings. It is a crucial hour for deception and compromise. Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:1–11 Length:

Toby Sumpter hails from Moscow, Idaho, where he's a pastor, author, husband, father, blogger, and co-host of the popular podcast Cross Politic, hosts of the Fight Laugh Feast conference.   Pastor Toby and I discussed: - The politics of 6-day creation - The secular American religion - Calvinism's influence on the American revolution - Christians building more than culture - The troubling eugenics of Dave Rubin's  announcement - Christians duped with the offer of power https://crosspolitic.com/ https://flfnetwork.com/ https://www.tobyjsumpter.com/ https://www.kingscrossmoscow.com/ Dr. Joe Boot is the founder of the Ezra Institute for Contemporary Christianity, and the founding pastor of the Westminster Chapel in Toronto. He's the author of several books, including the classic Mission of God, and has worked in the fields of Christian apologetics, worldview education and church leadership for over twenty years on both sides of the Atlantic. Dr. Boot and I discussed: - Aristotle's impact on Christianity through Thomas Aquinas; - Nature and Grace as artificial distinctions; - how inflating Church and State paradoxically leads to secularization; - the meaning of Christ's Lordship over all spheres of life; -the Eschatology of Hope for Law, Politics, Medicine, and even Sports. On Easter Sunday, as children hunt for chocolate eggs, the words 'Christ is Risen. Alleluia!' are proclaimed from every church pulpit. The day of Jesus Christ's Resurrection is the most joyous day of the Christian calendar. A message of death defeated, salvation secured, is the cornerstone of the faith of nearly one third of the world's population. But how do the faithful understand this extraordinary story? Do you have to believe Jesus physically rose from the dead for the story to have meaning? And what is it's resonance today, for those of faith, or without? Ernie Rea is joined by scholars Professor Helen Bond, Dr Andrew Boakye, and the Chief Executive of the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity, Paul Woolley, to discuss the evidence for and understanding of the Resurrection. It's not simply because people are believers in Christ-there is much more involved. It involves the methods we employ to communicate the message of Jesus. But that is not the only string to his bow, as he has also pursued theological studies at various points in Spain, the Netherlands and the UK. In 1982, he spent six months at the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity and as a result, got to know John Stott as a teacher, mentor and friend. Since then, he has felt Uncle John's influence keenly, not least because he has spent his entire professional life taking Stott's principle of double listening seriously. Along side his journalism, he has taught theology in several institutions and is a pastor at the Reformed Church in Madrid. He has also been very involved in the Spanish Evangelical Alliance, and at John Stott's recommendation, was one of the World Evangelical Alliance's representatives in its theological dialogues with the Vatican.   More on LICC José's blog (in Spanish) - including many posts about John Stott José's podcast series about John Stott (in Spanish) Reformed Church of Madrid (where José pastors)
