This episode of The Leadership Standard podcast with host Gair Maxwell features an inspiring conversation with Toni Desrosiers—a Canadian entrepreneur who disrupted the billion-dollar plastic wrap industry by inventing the first reusable beeswax food wrap: Abeego. Endlessly curious about the origin of legends and myths, he is considered a global authority on the creation of iconic, “larger-than-life” brands that attract legions of customers and top talent – without having to use “pushy” marketing tactics. Some organizations he has worked with have achieved 15-30X financial growth while becoming a much coveted and highly desirable “Category of One”. His fascination with “legends” likely dates back to the age of 11, watching the “Immaculate Reception”, December 23, 1972, as Franco Harris galloped into NFL history. Today, that curiosity extends to dissecting how the world's top brands become - simply irresistible. Everything from Apple & AC/DC to Lulu Lemon and Led Zeppelin. Specifically, his research focuses on small, but mighty giants that exert the same magnetic, pulling power similar to what NIKE does with shoes and Harley Davidson with motorcycles. These “Big Little Legends” include historic Café Du Monde in New Orleans; world famous, Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle and Webers on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario. Gair's riveting keynote presentations and hands-on workshops are packed with real-life stories supported by decades of in-the-trenches business experience. Described as a “shock stick of energy”, Gair delivers electrifying, uplifting presentations – both live and virtual - that inspire everyday people to stand apart from the crowd, unleash their inner greatness and build an enduring legacy. He has worked with some of the world's most dynamic organizations, including the Apple Specialist Marketing Group, Caterpillar, NAPA, Leo Burnett (Taiwan), Virginia Tech and others, while sharing conference stages with business icons such as Richard Branson and Gene Simmons. His accomplishments include: • Awarded “Speaker of the Year” by TEC Canada. • Recognized as a Vistage ‘Top Performer' in 2020. • Upwards of 600 appearances with Vistage International, the world's largest CEO Peer Advisory Group. • Best-selling author of Big Little Legends, available through Amazon.com, Indigo, Barnes & Noble, and more. • Podcast Host: “The Leadership Standard” with TEC Canada. A former broadcaster, Gair racked up 10,000+ interviews and 30,000+ broadcasts in an award-winning radio and television career. The son of a former pro golfer from St. Andrews, Scotland, Gair is a military history buff, an avid supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers and a card-carrying Tennessee Squire. He prefers Jack Daniels on the rocks, a frosty Moosehead beer and is a life-long fan of Van Halen who believes both versions of the band with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar should be considered legendary. A native of Moncton, NB, he currently resides in London, ON with Dana and their brood of two cocker spaniels (Theodore & Sophie) along with a beagle-mix rescue named Maggie. Big Little Legends is his second book.

How have 15,000+ CEOs boosted their organization's sales and performance? They followed the advice of MIT and Johns Hopkins researcher, Don Schmincke. In this episode of The Leadership Standard podcast hosted by Gair Maxwell, Don Schmincke helps executives accelerate business performance and reveals how to effectively lead organizational change, develop strategy and create and manage great teams. When Don Schmincke left academia to research how leaders impact civilization, he was not prepared for the support and response he received. The journey began when entrepreneurs, CEOs, and business owners vented frustrations with the high failure rates of management theories, experts, and programs. Unaware of their world while he was pursuing the sciences at MIT, it was while teaching at Johns Hopkins University that the ideal laboratory emerged to explore why these failures happen – and how to fix them. Now, after working with 15,000+ CEOs, he has validated the protocols for success. Many CEOs find them "delightfully irreverent with blinding flashes beyond popular theories" and are pleased with the unexpected impact on their balance sheets. His work has been recognized in national media such as The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. He flies 200,000 miles annually keynote speaking at conferences, training CEOs in his workshops, and working with clients in every industry from the Department of Defense strategy to large and small corporations that include the healthcare, manufacturing/distribution, information/ communications, and finance/insurance sectors.

Have you ever wondered how certain people and companies achieve larger-than-life status? Well, today's guest has some theories about what legends are made of, with empirical evidence to back them up! International brand consultant Gair Maxwell has worked with some of the world's most dynamic organizations, including Apple, Caterpillar, NAPA, and Virginia Tech. He has also shared conference stages with some of the world's biggest business icons, such as Richard Branson and Gene Simmons, delivering 80 to 90 presentations every year with global representation from speaker bureaus in Canada and Mexico. “If you want to create something truly legendary, especially with something as intangible as a brand, there are no guarantees, but you have got to be the one to basically [do what] we were talking about earlier, with Steven Pressfield and the legend of Bagger Vance. You are the golfer, metaphorically. You have got to step up to the tee, and you have got to put the ball in play.” — https://twitter.com/GairMaxwell (@GairMaxwell) [0:40:02]“As the business world gets more focused on metrics and logic and that which is linear and analytical, that's not, big picture, how you win over the long haul. I think it's art. In the end, it comes down to the art that you create and, in many respects, your business or your nonprofit or whatever it is, think of it as a canvas. I know it sounds very metaphorical, but I see it that way. It's a canvas, and then you paint it in the image that you feel good about.” — https://twitter.com/GairMaxwell (@GairMaxwell) [1:06:55]A former broadcaster, Gair racked up over 10,000 interviews and more than 30,000 broadcasts in an award-winning radio and television career in his native country of Canada. Gair Maxwell didn't follow a safe or conventional path to get where he is today. Since the day he was fired from a 20 year media career with the news making the front page of his hometown paper, few then, would have bet he would rise from an unemployment line to become an internationally-recognized author, speaker and entrepreneur, sharing the stage with Richard Branson. Gair has worked with dynamic brands like Mitsubishi, Apple, and named 2012 Speaker of the Year by TEC Canada. This show is about reinvention. A truely thought provoking show that opens us to reinvention, the why, how and what's next. A MUST listen to for every leader who is serious about getting ahead of the game and winning. Gair Maxwell is an International Speaker, Author of the critically-acclaimed book, “Nuts, Bolts & a few Loose Screws,” and a Reinvention Strategist. With a background in Broadcast Journalism, Gair himself has been reinvented, long ago transitioning into a life of speaking, coaching and creating, which led him to being recognized as TEC Canada’s “Speaker of the Year” in 2012. Gair brought all kinds of helpful insights to this episode. Some of them include being set up to “receive” (listen and learn) as opposed to always being stuck on “transmit” (making it about us, doing more talking than listening); Going from getting fired to getting fired up; re-purposing experiences and skills we’ve acquired throughout our journey; and what a real “window of opportunity” most often actually looks like, and what you need to do when you see one. Aside from those great bits of wisdom, there were three key takeaways that stood out from my time with Gair Maxwell. They were: 1. It’s not about the many. It’s about the ONE. You never know who’s listening / watching / reading and how what you’re sharing may impact them. Sharing your experiences openly and genuinely helps others – and ourselves – in ways we often cannot conceive of at the time. Don’t worry about thousands upon thousands of views, listens, fans, clicks, likes or shares. It’s about a genuine connection with the ONE. 2. Understanding Purpose vs Result. For instance: the purpose of a business is to make money. Is it? Or is that the result of fulfilling the real purpose? 3. Focus on Possibility as opposed to Problems. This is a great lesson in business and in life. This particular conversation took place in a coffee shop. So it sounds like we’re, well, in a coffee shop. So brew a fresh cup, pull up a seat and sit in with us. It was a fun and lively conversation that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. ©2016 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
