At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big-ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all. July 1st: 7/10 A lot of cool stuff started, including higher speed limits on roads where higher speed limits make sense and increase efficiency. Helipads: 8/10 Amazing for so many reasons; well-known rich people, a ridiculous number of submissions, a massive waste of energy and, finally, they won. Offensive to girls: 3/10 The fuss over the Warehouse and the backpack is pathetic. It was a joke. It was light-hearted. The All Blacks: 7/10 A new season, new hope, new excitement and an easy opener. Wegovy: 7/10 That was a lot of publicity in the news for a product next to no one can afford. School lunches: 7/10 Because with the new stats, the new meals, and the new feedback, that is a good example of a problem solved. Now, are the media going to give the same amount of coverage to the answer as they did to the problem? Problems occur in our relationships when we move too fast. We tend to microwave almost everything, relationships included! We make commitments before we actually know the person, or we allow others to dictate the speed. In this message, I will focus on some of the speed limits we need to consider, whether in a business, personal, or romantic relationship. If we want relationships that are healthy and last, we need to slow down and live!
A speed limit increase near a beachside town north of Auckland is being described as dangerous and hugely confusing. The chunk of road on the Hibiscus Coast Highway has gone from 50 kms back up to 70kms. It's part of the government's policy to reverse Labour's speed limit reductions that it said slowed Kiwis and the economy down. Some locals have complained saying the stretch of highway between Orewa village and Hatfields beach is a busy spot with pedestrians and beachgoers. In a letter to locals Auckland Transport said it doesn't think the speed limit change to 70kms is "desirable or appropriate", but it is legally obligated to make the change. Auckland councillor for Albany John Watson spoke to Lisa Owen.

One third of vehicles passing through an East Clare village are travelling over the speed limit. On foot of a motion tabled by Fine Gael Councillor Conor Ryan at the latest Killaloe Municipal District Meeting, a traffic survey was conducted on the R466 in O'Callaghan's Mills from May 14th to May 19th. It's been found that of the 1,124 vehicles driving through the village each day, 33% were over the current default speed of 50 kilometres per hour, equating to roughly 370 vehicles. Councillor Ryan says traffic calming infrastructure is required as matter of urgency.
Finance Minister Nicola Willis talks to Mike Hosking about the week's big issues after the budget announcement last week. Health New Zealand's aiming to perform more than 30-thousand elective surgeries by June 2026 by outsourcing more straightforward cases to private hospitals. Willis says getting doctors and specialists on longer term contracts will get more people the care they need sooner. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon last week announced his intention to raise the retirement age. Willis says no discussions have taken place yet, but says the Government would need to be upfront with their plans. "At some point, a future government is either going to have to slap a lot more tax on people or it's going to have to front up to whether the settings can be tweaked a little bit," she says. Dunedin City Council is planning to keep existing speed limits around the city's schools in place, despite a directive from Government. The report being considered at Wednesday's council meeting will recommend all but one school keep its 30km per hour speed limit - with the remaining school only increasing to 50km during non-peak hours. The council has been asked to provide a list of speed limit reversals on 'specified roads' to the New Zealand Transport Agency by Thursday. Dunedin City Councillor Jim O'Malley says these speed limits have been in place for a long time - and many in the community don't want them to change. "We know that when another Government comes in, they'll want them back to where they were before, so it would pretty much be a futile waste of effort, to be honest." A small Nelson school is fighting plans to increase the speed limit on the State Highway 6 that runs past its front gate. The government's reversing speed limit reductions, brought in by Labour, on local streets, arterial roads, and state highways by 1 July this year. NZTA announced it will now consult on changes to 16 sections of state highways that were due to automatically revert to faster speeds. Clifton Primary School in the Nelson suburb of Atawhai is on State Higway 6; about five years ago the speed limit on that stretch of road dropped from 80km/hr to 60km/hr. It's desperate to keep it that way and will now get a say. Clifton Terrace school principal Rob Wemyss spoke to Lisa Owen.
Every road has a speed limit that describes the safest and best speed to travel. If you drive too fast, you can lose control. If you drive too slow, you can disrupt the flow of traffic. You also have an optimal speed. What is your optimal range of controlled intensity or speed that will yield the best results?
