Welcome to a FREE sneak peek of a very special one-hour Patreon episode from Discograffiti's epic Beach Boys series “And Your Dreams Come True.” Along with special guest Beach Boys author/scholar Domenic Priore (who will be a mainstay in this series), we engage in a very passionate deep-dive discussion of Surfin USA's importance in allowing The Beach Boys to go from regional to national success, and also how the creation of the California sound ironically allowed them to break free of their west coast shackles. No sophomore slump here, that's for sure. Here's where their legendary sound comes into being, and Brian begins to double-track their vocals for the very first time. Don't miss the full episode on our Patreon, or you'll only be getting part of the story! The Beach Boys are known for their sunny surf hits, stadium-filling live shows, the groundbreaking album "Pet Sounds," and the many trials and tribulations of genius bandleader Brian Wilson. What they are not known for is the synth-driven 1977 LP "The Beach Boys Love You." On this episode of Music Defender, Michael sets out to change that.

ABOUT THE BOOK Former teen idol Leif Garrett bares his soul for the first time ever, revealing his deepest secrets about the extraordinary highs and devastating lows he has survived over the years. He was a hardworking child actor in the early 1970s, appearing on dozens of popular films and TV programs. Then he was offered a chance to make a record and “Leif Garrett, teen idol” was born. Millions of teenage girls all over the world covered their walls with his picture. His face adorned hundreds of international magazine covers as he became one of the biggest and most desired heartthrobs in history. There were jet-setting tours, TV specials, and hit records, along with an endless supply of beautiful women, alcohol, and ultimately, the drugs that sent this shooting star into the darkest depths of addiction. Idol Truth is a harrowing survivor’s story as well as a charmed tale filled with compelling pop culture characters—from Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields to John Belushi, Freddie Mercury, and many more. It’s the first time ever that Leif Garrett has come clean about his life, revealing all the details of his spectacular journey. ABOUT LEIF Leif Garrett burst onto the scene in 1966 at the early age of five, debuting as an actor in the quintessential period film, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Garrett starred in over sixty hit television shows, such as being the semi-regular on the critically acclaimed hit television shows, The Waltons and Family. But it was his portrayal of a pony express rider in the television special, Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion that garnered Garrett the honor of being inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame. From then on he continued to do more TV and film including Walking Tall and the hit television series, Three for the Road. This family drama was Garrett’s launching pad for the recording phenomena that was to occur. Having achieved tremendous success as an actor, Garrett took on the music industry. He became a multi gold and platinum recording artist and one of the biggest teen idols of all time, gracing magazine covers all over the world. In 1977, Garrett released his self-titled debut album and climbed the music charts with his remakes of “Runaround Sue” (#13) and “Surfin’ USA” (#20). In 1978 he released his sophomore album entitled Feel The Need. The album quickly became a chart-topper with Leif’s biggest hit, “I Was Made For Dancin'." After releasing three more albums, Garrett decided to turn his attention to acting once again, co-starring in Francis Ford Coppola’s film classic, The Outsiders in 1983. He continued to choose other notable roles in the eighties in movies such as Thunder Alley and Shaker Run. In 1991, Garrett appeared with fellow former teen idol, David Cassidy, in the seventies spoof, Spirit of ’76. Audiences were amazed and impressed with Garrett’s comedic ability and talent. It was in 1998 when the music arena became reacquainted with Leif Garrett on VH1’s highly acclaimed Behind The Music series. The response from the viewing public was sensational and it has become one of the highest rated episodes of Behind The Music. Garrett’s well-documented bouts with substance abuse generated headlines in the next two decades. www.leifgarrett.net

Whether you’re celebrating Canada Day today or hurriedly getting work done in hopes of a four-day weekend beginning on the 4th of July, you’ve gotta make time for shazbazzar and JediShua before getting to work as the second half of 2019 begins. The TechnoRetro Dads have a summer-packed show to kick of the month of July with Bernie, Beach Boys, and big boomers! In the NEWS… The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will have an accompanying comic book series to delve more deeply into the many characters from the Netflix series. Don’t forget that Stranger Things 3 is coming to Netflix this Thursday. Find out how Hawkins, Indiana deals with another attack from another dimension. Tickets to Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2020 went on sale…and were quickly sold out. We Love Our Cereal… …and the Roving Spoonster, Shane in GR does, too! Two new Cap’n Crunch flavors for your bowl! The UK may have lost major holdings in North America, but they get the last laugh by getting white chocolate Coco Pops while the former colonies fill their bowls with empty wishes. Evidence of the TechnoRetro Dads’ time-traveling tours is discovered by Austrian archaeologists who dug up three thousand year-old Cheerios (not Oreos, shaz). Vinyl Scratchback: The Beach Boys Summer time is a funner time with music blaring from your boombox at the beach — as long as it’s beach music. And what could be more summer-centric than the tones of The Beach Boys? From wave-riding songs like “Surfin’ Safari” and “Surfin’ USA” to cruising songs like “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “I Get Around”, The Beach Boys have been an integral part of summer. But boys will be boys, and therefore had to include songs about the girls like “California Girls” and the wistful “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. Rounding out the mix is their huge summer hit in the ‘80s called “Kokomo” (which, evidently, isn’t about white chocolate Coco Puffs). Let’s Go To the Movies: Weekend at Bernie’s Richard and Larry discover a discrepancy in their company’s financial records that reveals more than a clerical error. To reward them for their diligence and vigilance in their work, their boss Bernie invites them to his beach house for the weekend — and plans to have them silenced…forever. But when Bernie gets on the wrong side of his nefarious partner-in-crime, the hitman is given a different target and the two young employees spend a wild weekend trying to conceal the fact that their boss is dead so that they can enjoy a well-earned weekend on the beach. Fireworks! Pack black powder into a paper cylinder, set it aflame, and watch it smoke, skip, snake, skyrocket, or simply go “BOOM!” The first week of July is a great time for blowing things up at home, the beach, or dirt roads on the way back from another state with less-stringent laws regulating fireworks. The ‘Dads and several EarBuds recall their experiences with sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, and more as we celebrate national holidays this week. Feedback: New Coke and the Cola Wars New Coke turned Jeremy into a Pepsi drinker. Norman speaks of the Cola Wars in coded speech. Myles can’t find New Coke in Canada and needs help. Piano Parent Podcast: helping teachers, parents, and students get the most of their piano lessons.
In Episode 130 I gave you a list of ten songs that are perfect for playing along with YouTube videos (I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from that episode! Thanks for letting me know it was helpful for you). It occurred to me while recording that episode that I haven’t really talked about building chords and their inversions on the podcast. Build by counting piano keys Many piano kids may be familiar with chords that are grouped by their shape. Major Chords with all white keys: C, F, G. Chords with a black key in the middle: D, E, A. Chords with black keys on the top and bottom and a white key in the middle: Db, Eb, Ab. But what about chords that don’t fit in those groups? You can find the notes you need by counting piano keys - all keys, black or white. For Major chords, start with any piano key. This becomes the ROOT of the chord. Today, let’s use B. From the ROOT, count up four piano keys (C, C#, D, D#) D# is the fourth piano key up from B. D# is the middle note of the chord. In terms of intervals, it is a third above B so we will call it the THIRD of the chord. From the ROOT, count up seven piano keys (C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#) F# is the seventh piano key up from B. F# is the top note of the chord. In terms of intervals, it is a fifth above B so we will call it the FIFTH of the chord. Since we counted up 4 piano keys to get to the D#, we could use a shortcut of only counting three more keys from D# to get to the F#. I counted from B to reinforce the fact that the chord tones get their identity from the ROOT. For minor chords we still select a ROOT and count up seven piano keys to find the FIFTH. The difference between a Major chord and a minor chord is the sound of the THIRD. The THIRD of the chord determines the type. From the ROOT, count up three piano keys (C, C#, D). D is three piano keys up from B so D is the THIRD or middle note in the B minor chord. Changing that one note from D# to plain D changes the whole mood of the chord. That sounds like me on certain days, one little thing can make my mood change from happy to sad. The good news is one little thing can change it right back, too! Build by using the scale I discussed building scales using the Circle of Fifths in Episode 013: Magic Wand, part 1 Build a Major scale using whole steps and half steps (Whole step is two piano keys, black or white, half step is moving to the next piano key) W W H W W W H 2 2 1 2 2 2 1 Once you have the correct scale degrees, you can start to build chords or triads by combining every other note of the scale. For example, Why inversions? Inversions allow us to transition quickly between chords, and often using an inversion can add a different nuance to the chord. Sounds better to our ears. More cohesive and less choppy. The common tones between chords help our ears transition from one sound to the next. If you think of a choir, the voices don’t want to jump around, they want to find the closest chord tone to help their voice move up or down efficiently. The snowman visual for inversions on this page is cute. Invert chords to play melody on the top, build the harmony underneath. When you play a tune by ear, start with the melody, add the bass as a foundation, then fill in harmonic chord tones to add richness to the arrangement. A fun bonus and a challenge On March 4, 1963, the Beach Boys released their second album, “Surfin’ USA.” The title song on the album is in the key of Eb Major and uses Eb, Bb, and Ab. The pattern goes like this: Bb |Bb | Eb | Eb |Bb |Bb | Eb | Eb | Ab |Ab | Eb | Eb |Bb |Ab | Eb | Eb | I challenge you to use the tools I’ve shared with you today to figure out which piano keys you need for each of these chords and find the most efficient way you can use those chords and their inversions to play this song. Once you can play "Surfin' USA" on your own, try playing along with the Beach Boys on this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDb303T-B1w Thanks for listening! Näven i bordet. Men Nicke……..gnisslar….. Kom igen! The Beach Boys are the greatest American Rock n’ Roll Band. Their music is ever-present in our culture. Kids of today are as likely to know the words to “Surfin’ USA,” and “Fun Fun Fun,” as “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” A new collection released by Omnivore Recordings, Becoming the Beach Boys, the Complete Hite and Dorinda Morgan Sessions, gives us the clearest view into the group’s origins. Through demos, rehearsals, multiple takes and studio chatter, you can hear the Beach Boys gelling as a band, both vocally and musically. We talk with the man that helped put this fantastic package together, the owner of Omnivore Recordings, Brad Rosenberger. We discuss how he acquired these vintage tapes, the cool memorabilia in the accompanying booklet, and some of the oddest tracks in the set.
What use is an F-call? As I've said many times before, Amateur Radio blows me away. Every week I see new and imaginative things that this community achieves through trial and error, from contacts across new bands, coordination of new activities such as fox-hunts and SOTA activations. We are a fool hardy lot, climbing up hills to "activate" them, or doing the same thing for light-houses, or museums. There's a surfing contest where you collect callsigns to spell the locations of surfing beaches as outlined in the Beach Boy's "Surfin USA" song, which includes an Australian beach as well. It's wonderful to hear about Amateurs talking to other Amateurs, both using portable gear, both standing on top of a summit and exchanging reports across the country. Recently an F-call decided that he wanted to try to build a cavity from bits purchased at a hardware store. Complete with video of the achievement, testing and SWR measurements, a $15 experiment to see if he could do it. Wanting to learn more about his build he sought and found assistance from other Amateurs offering suggestions and equipment to help out. There's a group of Amateurs who are experimenting with a new Internet linking protocol, AllStarLink. Using single board computers like the BeagleBone Black to run copies of embedded Linux with a full dynamic switching system on board to deal with nodes dropping in and joining. Think telephone exchange with roaming handsets. There are amateurs experimenting with different types of antennas, made from Horse Tape, advanced calls learning about tuning up 40m dipoles on 80m, antenna manufacturers building 80m single frequency dipoles in the space of a 40m dipole, repeaters being built, control systems being updated, new services being invented and masts being erected. Don't for a minute think that Amateur Radio is just about sitting in a shack with a microphone, talking to another Amateur in a similar shack somewhere else, doing the same thing. Having an F-call is being part of this community, warts and all, it's an amazing place to hang out and do stuff. So get off your terminator and go to it. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

For more than 40 years the Beach Boys have been the embodiment of the all-american rock band, promoting surfing, cars and girls -and especially California. The 3 Wilson Brothers, Brian, Dennis and Carl - along with their cousin Mike Love, grew up in Southern California singing together at family gatherings. Brian added his school buddy Al Jardine and the band was complete. In the fall of 1961 they recorded their first single "Surfin'" which hit #2 locally and #75 nationally. In the spring of 1962 The Beach Boys were signed to Capitol Records on the strength of a demo tape recorded by their father, Murry. That tape contained the two singles to follow, Surfin Safari and 409. Surfin Safari hit the top 20. They followed up with the great tunes Surfin USA and Surfer Girl. At this point there was no stopping the great sound that the Beach Boys were creating. Many hits were to follow: Little Deuce Coupe, Catch a Wave, Be True To Your School, Fun Fun Fun and I Get Around. So let's get going with some of their early hits from 1962 to 1966
Shrunken Head Lounge Surf Radio Show Running Time: 29 minutes 30 seconds Beach Boys Special Part 2 Surfin USA, Fun Fun Fun, Little Deuce Coupe - that's just one side of the Beach Boys. But what about the introspective and experimental side which they display on their later works? This show will feature songs showing the bands maturation in the late '60s as Americas best and most versitile recording acts. The Beach Boys started out as a family - three brothers, Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson and their cousin Mike Love. The addition of Brians school friend Al Jardine filled out the picture. The hallmark of these recordings are the groups vocal harmonies, a new approach to arrangements and Brian's incorporation of the Wall Of Sound, originally created by Phil Spector and refined in a way that only Brian could. "Pet Sounds" is the pinnicle in this sound, considerred the greatest album ever recorded (and inspiring The Beatles Paul McCartney to create Sgt. Pepper) . To bring his ideas to life, Brian hired top studio musicians, most notable Hal Blaine and Carrol Kaye. By this point Brian decided not to tour any longer and found a replacement in Glen Campbell and later Bruce Johnson. Though these songs never charted as well as the earlier hits, they are just as well known and will remain in our minds and on our radios for ever. Here is Part 2 of the Beach Boys on the SHL!
