Iodine is a critical nutrient for thyroid function, yet there is a lot of controversy around iodine and thyroid health. Unlike other nutrients, iodine is selectively taken up by the parts of the body that use it. This generally means that when it's in low supply, more is pulled in, and when there's too much, it's blocked from coming in. This creates the iodine paradox, where both excessive and insufficient iodine can lead to thyroid dysfunction. For people with autoimmune thyroid conditions, their genetic predispositions can impact how their bodies respond to iodine. So, while some people with thyroid conditions can tolerate and even benefit from iodine supplementation, for others, it can be problematic.Today, I'm joined by Dr. Alan Christianson, a board-certified naturopathic endocrinologist and author of the Thyroid Reset Diet, to talk about iodine, thyroid health, and thyroid antibodies. In this conversation, Dr. Christianson and I discuss iodine's role in thyroid health, the complexities of iodine uptake, genetic influences, potential risks of excessive iodine intake, the significance of thyroid antibodies, the risks and benefits of thyroid medication, and more. In the latest podcast episode of the Thyroid Beginner Series, Dr. Christianson discusses the importance of iodine for your thyroid health. He compares it to the mantra in real estate of "location, location, location," with "iodine, iodine, iodine" being the first three things you need for your thyroid to function correctly. Dr. C explains how our genes can affect how we process iodine, which is essential for thyroid health. Some people's genes work better in low-iodine environments, while others work better in high-iodine environments. Interestingly, people who are prone to thyroid disease may have a lower tolerance for iodine, making them more vulnerable to triggers, even at normal iodine levels. The podcast explores how iodine interacts with thyroid hormones and autoimmunity, and the delicate balance required for optimal thyroid function. Dr. C simplifies iodine requirements and stresses the importance of maintaining a safe intake, especially for those susceptible to thyroid issues. As supported by research, Dr. C stresses the effectiveness of regulating iodine intake in reversing thyroid disease. He provides practical insights into assessing iodine intake and offers valuable resources for monitoring and optimizing iodine levels. He also emphasizes iodine's essential role in thyroid health and encourages listeners to check out his Thyroid Reset Diet for comprehensive guidance. With a better understanding of iodine and its implications, individuals like you can take proactive steps toward improving thyroid function and overall well-being. Post surgery recovery [18:41] Marianna D. says: Hey Robb and Nikki, I am headed into week two of a total of four weeks of post surgery restrictions. I had a bladder sling procedure for incontinence. The doctor ordered walking only for exercise. I specifically asked about upper body workouts and was told no go, which makes sense because upper body almost always involves core muscles. I'm a 71 yo female who normally spends over an hour every other day lifting heavy things in the gym. Tips please on how to avoid muscle loss, particularly advice on protein consumption. Advice on collagen intake desired as well. Thanks. 2. Thyroid & Iodine [22:41] Marilee says: Hi Robb & Nicki, I recently listened to a podcast with Dr. Alan Christianson and read his book The Thyroid Reset Diet. His premise as I understand it is that most auto-immune and hypo-thyroid conditions are due to an excess of iodine in the body and can resolve once that iodine is depleted/used up by going on a low iodine diet. This includes primarily removing salt (unless clearly non-iodized or kosher), egg yolks and dairy although there are many other sources listed including certain skin care products. My labs have indicated the need for treatment for hypo for many years as well as having autoimmune thyroid disease. However any prescription thyroid medicine as well as thyroid support supplements leave me feeling much worse so I have been untreated for several years. While I don't feel nearly as bad as my labs would indicate I also don't feel great. I would like to know what you think of this idea and whether you think his eating plan would help. Thanks for all you do. Guermo Ruiz https://www.3030strong.com/ Isabella Wentz https://thyroidpharmacist.com/ 3. Do ketones make you wired? [27:30] Alex says: I am sensitive to stimulants in the afternoon. Especially caffeine, even carnitine. I am looking for something to take in the afternoon for a pick me up at work and eventually for an evening workout (after work). I am tempted to try ketones to boost my brain and energy. I am also on the Shoemaker protocol to recover from mold illness. I am not opposed to making my own stack. I have an anti-fatigue stack that helps me through the morning crash. But I need a 3pm stack, because I start to crash hard around then. I have yet to rule out taking electrolytes, cordyceps and Lions Mane. https://drinkkenetik.com/ Sponsor: The Healthy Rebellion Radio is sponsored by our electrolyte company, LMNT. Hormone replacement is not usually life or death, except in the cases of the thyroid and adrenals. Thyroid disease has tripled in the last few decades, and thyroid medication is consistently among the top three most prescribed medicines in the world. At the same time, many women find themselves with adrenal insufficiency due to a workaholic lifestyle and burnout. Today, I'm joined by the most prolific writer that I know, naturopathic physician Dr. Alan Christianson. Dr. Christianson has written many books on hard topics like adrenal glands, thyroid glands, and metabolism, and I've learned a lot from him and his deep expertise. In this conversation, we talk about the problem with how most doctors test for thyroid issues, natural versus synthetic thyroid, whether you should supplement with iodine at home, the best way to test cortisol, why your cortisol slope matters, how to keep your blood sugar stable with resistant starches, and a lot more. This was one of my favorite interviews so far, and I know you'll learn a lot from the conversation! Millions of people are affected by autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's. If you're one of them, you know how hard it is to find information about what you can do to feel better. One common query that more people have is, 'Will supplementing with Iodine help improve my thyroid disorder?' Then, this session with Dr. Alan Christianson, a Board Certified Naturopathic Endocrinologist, is just what you need to help answer the question, “Is iodine good or bad for Hashimoto's?” Iodine is a mineral that's essential for human health. It's found in many foods, and your body needs it to make thyroid hormones. Some people think that iodine might help improve symptoms of Hashimoto's disease, but there are cases where Iodine supplementation is not recommended as well. So, it is important to clearly know your condition and then go ahead with supplements. To get clarity on this subject, watch the discussion between Dr. Anshul Gupta MD and Dr. Alan Christianson about Iodine supplements and Hashimoto's in this video. ***About the Guest*** Dr. Alan Christianson is a Board Certified Naturopathic Endocrinologist who focuses on Thyroid care.
