Happy Valentine's Everyone! This week on the Deadpod we conclude the band's performance from February 19, 1982 in San Diego CA. Again, this comes from an audience tape so while the fidelity isn't quite up to soundboard levels, it does give you a great sense of being there.. The pre-drums portion of the set is well played, with the highlight being a sweet Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance. The killer portion of this set comes as Drums ends, the band goes into a great Other One -- Phil really seems to be enjoying this one as he leads the charge throughout.. A sweet Stella Blue follows then an unusual ending as instead of Around and Around we get Man Smart, Woman Smarter into Johnny B. Goode not as the encore but as the set closer. The US Blues encore is a snappy ending to the enening.. "From Morning Dew to Dark Star: The Grateful Dead's Masterpiece Concert in 1973"Larry Mishkin's featured concert is the Grateful Dead's legendary performance at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on June 10, 1973. This show is celebrated as one of the band's greatest, partly because of its remarkable opening with "Morning Dew," a song that symbolized the special nature of the event. The concert, part of a two-day festival with the Allman Brothers Band, included an extraordinary setlist and performances that have become iconic. The show started with "Morning Dew," a rare and significant opener, setting the tone for the night. The first set included 13 songs, ending with an 18-minute "Playing in the Band." The second set opened with a 22-minute "Eyes of the World," followed by Jerry Garcia singing "Morning Dew," "Stella Blue," and "Warfrat," which was a rare combination for a single show. The set also featured a 12-minute "Bird Song" and an 11-minute "Here Comes Sunshine," showcasing the band's range and intensity.A highlight of the concert was a 26-minute "Dark Star" that led into a sequence of "He's Gone," "Warfrat," "Truckin'," and "Sugar Magnolia," making for an over-hour-long jam to close the second set. The encore was equally impressive, featuring eight songs with guest performances by Dicky Betts and Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers Band. This show exemplified the Grateful Dead's ability to create a transcendent musical experience.Larry also discusses the song "Wave That Flag," played for the last time at this concert, which evolved into "US Blues." This track, notable for its evolving lyrics and style, was a precursor to a fan-favorite encore tune.In music news, Larry highlights the release of Widespread Panic's new LP, "Snake Oil King," their first in nine years, set to be released on June 14, 2024. The band, known for their jam band status, recorded the album at John Keane Studio in Athens, Georgia, and it features six tracks with high-quality vinyl mastering. The discussion also touches on Dead and Company's recent performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas, noting the innovative visuals and varied setlists. The band continues to break out new tunes and maintain the excitement of live shows. Finally, a humorous note mentions a Phish fan who was banned from all MSG venues for posting a video of himself taking a bong hit inside the Sphere during a concert, highlighting the strict enforcement of venue policies. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast

Larry talks about the significance of the show, including the band's transition in music style, notable songs played, and the presence of famous basketball player Bill Walton in the audience. Later, Alex discusses recent concerts they attended, highlighting U2's performance at The Sphere in Las Vegas, known for its immersive audiovisual experience, and another show at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco featuring the band St. Paul and the Broken Bones. This concert is a great snapshot of that time, this show being more in the Americana camp with the a killer 25 minute jammed out Other One (including its Bill Kreutzman drum solo lead in) really being the only true nod to the Primal era . Also, the band was in transition as Pigpen missed the show as part of his descent into alcohol related illnesses that eventually took him in March 1973. Keith had been playing with the band since February but Mickey began his “leave” in February after night one of the Capitol Theater run. So this night is just five of them up on stage playing their hearts out for the fine students of UCLA and other Deadheads ( then a very brand new “thing” having just been recognized by the band in the liner message inside the Grateful Dead album stating: “DEAD FREAKS UNITE! WHO ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU? HOW ARE YOU? Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed”) One fact that should be obvious given the venue and the time – an unknown UCLA student and want-a-be college basketball player, Bill Walton was in attendance along with some of his Bruins teammates for this first ever Dead show at Pauley Pavilion, famed home court for the UCLA Bruins, a team that following the amazing successes of Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Sidney Wicks, now was being led for the first time by Bill and his teammates Jamaal Wilkes and Greg Lee (spoiler alert: Bill has some success at UCLA too). Bill, of course, went on to be an NBA All-Star and a regular attendee of Dead shows and, as Alex can attest, not unusual to see him at a West Coast dead show right up until the end – kind of hard to miss a 7 foot deadhead with his red hair and tie dye apparel. Rumor has it when they knew he was going to be at a show the band would set up a basketball hoop backstage and that Bruce Hornsby was a hooper too. INTRO: Bertha Track No. 1 3:30 – 4:37 Great traditional opener although it was known to pop up in different spots during shows from time to time. At this point, it is still “new” having been debuted earlier that year, on February 18th at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester. Never released on a studio album, but it is the opening tune on the Dead's live album, “Grateful Dead” a/k/a Skull and Roses (or Phil's preferred name, “Skull Fuck” which was promptly rejected by their label, Warner Bros) on September 24, 1971. From shows in NYC at the Fillmore East and the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center (plus Johnny B. Goode from Winterland – couldn't completely ignore the west coast). SHOW #1: Tennessee Jed Track No. 5 0:45 – 1:46 This is one of the “new” ones played in this show. Along with Mexicali Blues, One More Saturday Night, Ramble On Rose and Jack Straw had all just been played for the first ever just two months earlier on October 19, 1971 at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis – also Keith's first show. A tune that more than most really captures the change in the band's direction as you have Garcia previously of Dark Star, St. Stephen and Eleven fame twanging away, musically and vocally, on a song with a feel that is a cross between country, western and a dash of rock n roll. Deadheads of Alex's and my era will note how much quicker the tempo is in this early version and Garcia's noticeable energy evident from his strong vocal performance. Played 436 times in concert, putting it at No. 15 of the list of the Dead's most played tunes.1st (again) on Oct. 19, 1971 in MPLSLast on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field, Chicago A great sing along tune that the Deadheads always enjoyed, normally found in the first set, towards the middle. SHOW #2: Jack Straw Track No. 10 :12 – 1:20 As just mentioned, this another “new” one just two months old. Everyone loves Jack Straw, even the Band which is why it checks in at No. on list of most tunes played by the Band with 476 performances (last one on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field). But in this early version, there is a little bit of a change from the version we all know and love. First, thing to know it is a tune by Hunter and Weir. Garcia did not write it although he sang it with Weir in a “trading off of verses” style. Second, in these early versions, before the Europe '72 tour, Weir sang all the verses like we just heard, “I just jumped the watchman, right outside the fence” was always sung by Jerry, but here, Weir sings it. Not sure of the reason for the change, but I like it a lot better with Jerry singing his verses (the other being “Gotta go to Tulsa, first train we can ride”). First time with Jerry on vocals was May 3, 1972 at the Olympia Theater in Paris, that also just happens to be the version of the song that wound up on the Europe '72 album. Although in its earlier years the song would appear in either first or second set, after their 1975 hiatus it became an almost exclusive first set song. And after Brent joined the band, almost always a show opener. Home to the more than occasional Phil base bomb, it was one of the Band's most popular tunes and a great way to open any show (especially if they had just opened with Bertha the night before so you got to catch them both!). SHOW #3: Ramble On Rose Track No. 18 0:00 – 1:28 Last of the “new” ones that we will feature today. Just like Tennessee Jed, upbeat, good energy, Jerry and the boys are having fun, like with any new creation. Still working out all the details, the james, keeping track of the lyrics and Jerry has not yet developed his signature growl on “goodbye mamma and poppa, goodbye jack and jill”. What I really like about this version and why I chose a clip from the beginning of the tune is to hear Keith's piano accompaniment that works so well with this song and adds another layer of creativity to the mix. Garcia always seemed to get energy and inspiration from the band's keyboard players and Keith, even this early in his career, is no exception. After its introduction on Oct. 19, 1971 in Minny, played a total of 319 times, good for 39th place on the all time list, just behind US Blues and just ahead of Don't Ease Me In (really?). Last played on June 27, 1995 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI. SHOW #4: You Win Again Track No. 20 1:12 – 2:21 "You Win Again" is a 1952 song by Hank Williams. In style, the song is a blues ballad and deals with the singer's despair with his partner. The song has been widely covered, including versions by Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, the Grateful Dead, Charley Pride, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Hank Williams recorded "You Win Again" on July 11, 1952—one day after his divorce from Audrey Williams was finalized. Like "Cold, Cold Heart," the song was likely inspired by his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, "You Win Again" was released as the B-side to "Settin' the Woods on Fire", primarily because up-tempo, danceable numbers were preferable as A-sides for radio play and for the valuable jukebox trade. Nonetheless, "You Win Again" peaked at number ten on the Most Played in C&W Juke Boxes chart, where it remained for a single week. Over a time period of less than one year, the Dead played You Win Again 24 times in concert, the first on November 11, 1971 at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, TX (this show in L.A. was only the third time it had been played) and the last on September 16, 1972 at The Music Hall in Boston. A version of the song was released on the Europe '72 album (second album side), from their show on May 24, 1972 at The Strand Lyceum in London, one of the final shows on that tour. JGB recorded a version of the song in 1976 during the Reflections album sessions but not played live again. It was briefly revived by The Dead with Dylan in 2003. OUTRO: Going Down The Road Feeling Bad Track No. 23 3:45 – 5:12 "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" (also known as the "Lonesome Road Blues") is a traditional American folk song, "a white blues of universal appeal and uncertain origin" The song was recorded by many artists through the years. The first known recording is from 1923 by Henry Whitter, an Appalachian singer,[2][3]as "Lonesome Road Blues". The earliest versions of the lyrics are from the perspective of an inmate in prison with the refrain, "I'm down in that jail on my knees" and a reference to eating "corn bread and beans."[4] The song has been recorded by many artists such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Skeeter Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, and the Grateful Dead, and the song is featured in To Bonnie from Delaney, "Mountain Jam", Born and Raised World Tour, The Grapes of Wrath, and Lucky Stars.Others who recorded it include Cliff Carlisle (also as "Down in the Jail on My Knees"), Woody Guthrie (also as "Blowin' Down This Road" or "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way"), Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Hall, Elizabeth Cotten and the Grateful Dead, Delaney and Bonnie, Canned Heat and Dillard Chandler. Dead played it 302 times (No. 46 on the most played tunes list just behind a tie between Mama Tried and Terrapin and just ahead of Birdsong). 1st time on October 10, 1970 at Colden Auditorium, part of Queens College in Queens, NY.Last played on July 5, 1985 at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, MO. During the time period of this show it was almost always paired with Not Fade Away (as made famous at the end of the Grateful Dead album). In later years, when Alex and I were regulars on tour, it would show up as a second set tune, usually, but not always after Drums/Space. A very upbeat tune that the band obviously loved playing the crowd loved hearing. For our purposes, a great way to end the show and say goodbye and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

What are the steps to success? Do what you love. Keep doing what you love. Keep going. About Hanna PK Hanna PK is a solid pianist, soulful vocalist, and vibrant performer, born and raised in South Korea, currently residing in Rochester, NY. She plays a wide variety of the blues & swing, old school folk, and boogie-woogie. She has a dynamic songwriting style - ranging from a funky tune with socially conscious lyrics to a mournful slow blues, from a pop-edged ballad to an uplifting swinging number, and from barrelhouse boogie to jazz. Her seemingly sweet and soft-spoken appearance often leads to surprise when hearing her rich, resonating voice that goes from a whisper to belting with intensity. Her piano style is much more lyrical and imaginative than simply repeating so-called “licks”, though she knows when to toss them in the mix for a thrill, and is always in the groove. And what draws the audience closer to her heartfelt, honest music are her genuine passion, and the originality that comes from within. In November 2021, She released her debut album on the VizzTone Label with Booga Music of internationally-known bluesman, Kenny Neal. Though Kenny had met her in Memphis, and during his tour in upstate New York, what got his attention to sign her to his label was a video of hanna's performance on a Curtis Jones' song “Decoration Day Blues” that she recorded in her U-Haul storage room. Debuted at #13 on Billboard's US Blues chart, since its release, the album has been played all over the U.S. and the world. But words, and even recorded samples, cannot fully convey the essence of Hanna's ''music — to really understand it and feel it, you have to hear her perform live. Her music continues to evolve and reflects the very moment she is living in — the happenings and vibe in the room, the reactions of her listeners, the musical contributions of each band member, and even the events of the week in the world, all combine to inspire a new and different performance of each song. As is the case with all true blues performers, she works from and in the tradition of the music while bringing her own stamp of creativity and originality to it. Her music tells a story, sometimes an age-old one, but she tells it in her way from her perspective, which in turn informs and expands our experience. The E.P. racked up thousands of streams in the first week of release, resulting in the last single 'Take Me Back Home' distributed worldwide by U-NXT c/o Universal Music. It seemed Laura was an overnight success. On the contrary, this Valley girl has been honing her craft for quite some time. She has finally found and created a sound that is truly breaking through and finding the recognition it deserves. Laura grew up listening to an eclectic mix of music from artists including Bonnie Raitt, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton and more. Even though these influences shine through on the album there is no doubt Laura with the help of producer Josiah J Manning, has found her unique sound. In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault we traverse to the heartland of America for a banner show from the wild Summer of 1982 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, WI. Featuring a hammy Bob, some heavy playing from Brent, and a lyrical albeit haggard Jerry, it's one of the best pictures we have of what made the 80's such a compelling and confounding time for The Dead. Disc One begins with a jamband staple, the sandwich jam, wherein “The Music Never Stopped” segues in and out of “Sugaree.” Elsewhere Jerry shines again on “Big River,” Brent beams through his Hammond on “CC Rider,” and the whole band connects on “Let It Grow.” While there are arguments to be made that aspects of other shows in the larger Summer ‘82 tour should have been included instead, getting a full First Set from The Dead showcases the highs and lows of the eras. On Disc Two we hear a very typical 80s/90s set two in the sense that “Playing In The Band” bookends a segment of “Drums/Space” and a gorgeous version of “The Wheel” emerges from the interstellar jamming. We close with a stunning take on “Morning Dew” before “One More Saturday Night” & “US Blues” takes us home. It's a breezy and summery cut from the larger series, and one that showcases an era often overlooked in Dead history but clearly has some gems to mine. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. In this week's episode we join the Dead in early 1974 for the very first Wall of Sound show. Just five shows removed from the Dick's Picks one selection, we hear the band in a loose, soundchecky vibe, as they work through the kinks of their revolutionary PA, and begin to dip their toes in the wild and exploratory sounds of 1974. One of the most laid-back Dick's Picks ever, it's a great warts & all peek into the Dead on the cusp of one of their most experimental & challenging years. Disc One is a trot through some DP standards, here played with space and patience in a way that fits the airiness of the Wall Of Sound they were plugged into. We hear the big machine slowly turn on in a choogly “US Blues” before great takes on “Brown-Eyed Women” and “Black-Throated Wind” settle everyone in. The debut of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Cassidy” prelude a truly 1974 take on “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Ride” before a gorgeous “Weather Report Suite” closes out the set. Disc Two is anchored by an emotive, 45min palindrome segment which reads: “Playing In The Band -> Uncle John's Band -> Morning Dew -> Uncle John's Band -> Playing In The Pand.” The raw power of the band in 1974 is heard clearly here, while their sectional jamming of Fall 1973 is on full display as well. The set ends with some standard takes on out of place tunes, while “Wharf Rat” serves as the emotional climax we all needed during the set. The seeds of the band we'd hear on full display in Dick's Picks 7 and 12 is here in its earliest origins. 36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. We're continuing our talk with David Young this week, who used to run two of Swindon's most well known music venues - The Victoria and the 12Bar. This week he tells us about life behind the scenes... dealing with promoters, how to handle raucous bands and what was in his very expensive lost and found box. Our tracks are something old and something new this week. From the late noughties we have Cheltenham rock-poppers, Loungefly. We also feature a track off the new album from US Blues sensation, Fantastic Negrito. This episode was created by Kieran Moore in Trowbridge and Jon Ponting in Cricklade. Thank you for your continued positive feedback on this series. Welcome back to Season 2 of 36 from the Vault: SUMMER TOUR! In Episode 13 we explore Dick’s Picks Vol. 12, from the Providence Civic Center in Providence, RI on June 26, 1974 and the Boston Garden in Boston, MA on June 28, 1974. A return to the wondrous year of 1974, as well as the compilation format in the DP series, this is a fan favorite, and one of the strongest versions to date. Filled with rare tracks and massive jams, it’s one of the more unique versions in the series, and a perfect snapshot of where The Dead were in Summer 1974. Kicking things off with an extended “China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider” sets the tone for the collection. Rounding out disc one with a 50-min segment that reads: “Truckin’ -> The Other One -> Spanish Jam -> Wharf Rat -> Sugar Magnolia” concludes one of the best single discs The Dead have ever released. Later we hear a snippet of the experimental jam in “Seastones” before another incredible 50min segment of “Weather Report Suite -> Jam -> US Blues” highlights the third disc. All in all it’s a truly thematic volume which showcases The Dead’s successes with The Wall Of Sound as well as their heavy focus on improvisation in 1974. Steven and Rob focus on the eternal greatness of “China>Rider,” the brilliance of compilation Dick’s Picks, the desire to hear a full “Seastones,” the band’s impending hiatus, and the beauty of mid-70’s Warren Beatty’s hair, seen best in the film “The Parallax View.” 36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. This week: Jill Stein shows up too much, we debate whether it was right of Immortal Technique to stuff Lin-Manual Miranda in a trash can all those times, Mao is an idealist and Marlowe deals with technical difficulties with dignity and grace. This week another super long set from 1974 - this of course is the second set from August 6th, 1974 at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City New Jersey. What a way to start - a wonderful 'Uncle John's Band' with a great jammy intro.. other great highlights from this set include a personal favorite - a nice 'Black Peter', an excellent 'Loose Lucy' and 'Ship Of Fools' - a bit more uptempo which I think suits the song well. Again here in this set you'll see no dedicated 'drums->space' segment, but there is plenty of jamming here, especially in the long closing segment which features 'Sugar Mag' into 'He's Gone', a long jammed out 'Truckin' (where Bobby fugs up the lyrics :) then a nice 'Spanish Jam' into an unusual 'Other One' jam.. they go out with a nice 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' and top off the sandwich with 'Sunshine Daydream'. US Blues follows as the encore of a most wonderful show. Grateful Dead Roosevelt Stadium Jersey City, NJ 8/6/74 - Tuesday Two Uncle John's Band [10:25] ; El Paso [4:09] ; Black Peter [10:20] ; Loose Lucy [4:58] ; Big River [4:43] ; Ship Of Fools [6:24] ; Me And My Uncle [2:43] ; Row Jimmy [8:05] ; Sugar Magnolia [6:34] > He's Gone [11:#21] > Truckin' [16:19] > Spanish Jam > The Other One [12:08] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [5:38] > Sunshine Daydream [2:22] Encore U.S. Blues [5:36] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod081718.mp3 hope this fine set of magic helps you hang onto summer just a little bit longer.... thanks so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!
We'll close out September with the second set of this fine show from September of 1982.. September 21st at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It starts with an interesting combo of 'Touch of Grey' into 'Samson and Delilah'. 'High Time' follows, a song far too infrequently played, in my opinion. Estimated Prophet goes into He's Gone - marked by a loud M-80 which was set off during the song. Post-Drums, Jerry brings things home with 'Black Peter'.. then Bobby ends with a rockin' Good Lovin'.. US Blues seems like a great encore right now to me.. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 9/21/82 - Tuesday Two Touch Of Grey [6:27] -> Samson And Delilah [7:40] ; High Time ; Estimated Prophet -> He's Gone -> Drums -> Space -> Throwing Stones -> Not Fade Away -> Black Peter -> Good Lovin' Encore U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092917.mp3 Give Peace a Chance
This month on the Brokedown Podcast we take a look at the Grateful Dead's lyrical Americana. More an overview than a deep-dive, we're going to cover a fair bit of ground like a freight with a good signal and a head of steam. The music is broken into two sets of great live music, with discussion before and after each. So fire this up along with the backyard barbecue and have yourself a real good time. As you listen to this second set from March 9th, 1981 it won't take you long at all to realize that fans were treated to a special evening of music 35 years ago. The China Cat -> I Know You Rider is such a wonderful beginning to what is a special night of music. Even a casual listener will soon be captured by the wonderful jam into Rider here. The band doesn't let up either, as this is just the start of a great set of music. A snappy Samson follows here, with a great intro by the drummers and some nice keyboard work by Brent. Ship of Fools leads us into the heart of this set, the Estimated ->Uncle John's Band->Drums/space->Other One->Stella Blue. A classic combination, done most exquisitely. Treat yourself and get lost in this section of the show. They follow with a fine Good Lovin' and come back for a somewhat sloppy US Blues, but by then.. its all smiles. Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden New York , NY 3/9/81 - Monday Two China Cat Sunflower [9:28] > I Know You Rider [6:10] > Samson And Delilah [6:55] ; Ship Of Fools [8:10] ; Estimated Prophet [14:10] > Uncle John's Band [11:41] > Drums > Space [3:08] > The Other One [7:43] > Stella Blue [9:49] > Good Lovin' [6:33] Encore U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod031116.mp3 I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.. This week on the Deadpod we'll finish hearing the end of the third set of the band's performance on 10/10/80 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco CA. This section starts with a wonderful verison of 'Big Railroad Blues' one of my favorite rockers. Then we get a nice jam that follows in 'Estimated Prophet' into 'Eyes of the World'. This is probably my personal highlight of this week's set as the boys do a great job on a personal favorite. A long drums and space follows as befits a show of this length, and leads us into Truckin' and then a haunting Black Peter. Unfortunately this is where the soundboard disappears and we are listening to the remainder of this set on a pretty decent audience recording. The band closes the night with a pair of good old time rockers, Around and Around and Promised Land, and return for a US Blues encore. All in all quite an evening, and I hope you've enjoyed hearing this show in its' entirety the last three weeks.. Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/10/80 - Friday from set 3: Big Railroad Blues Estimated Prophet Eyes of the World drums Truckin' Nobody's Jam Black Peter Around and Around Promised Land U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102315.mp3 Thanks for your support! Have a fabulous, joyful week!
On this week's Deadpod the band shows plenty of excitement and enthusiasm throughout a pretty great second set during their first visit to Red Rocks back in 1978. I've always been a fan of Cold Rain and Snow, and this is a great way to open the set. Garcia starts several of these songs rather slowly but they tend to build up to a great climax, and I think that is apparent especially on the Scarlet->Fire. The Dancin' in the Streets is one of the best versions ever, you'll want to move when you hear it! Not Fade Away is quite unique as well, as Jerry goes into a tease of Nobody's Fault but Mine before returning to the Not Fade Away lines.. The double encore of US Blues and Johnny B Goode is a sure sign they had a great night out in the Rockies this day! Grateful Dead Red Rocks Ampitheater, Morrison CO 7/7/78 - Friday set 2 Cold Rain and Snow Beat it on Down the Line Scarlet Begonias Fire on the Mountain Dancin' in the Streets drums Not Fade Away Nobody's Jam Not Fade Away Black Peter Around and Around U.S. Blues Johnny B. Goode You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071715.mp3 THANK You! to everyone whose contributions keep the Deadpod afloat! Have a great week........... enjoy the summer..
Happy 4th of July! With the 4th falling on a Friday it just seems to be fitting that I play one of the seven shows that the boys played on this date. Since I've already played the 7/4/90 show on the Deadpod, I decided to bring back this beauty from the Summer of 1984.. I happen to think the boys were on a peak during this time (the night before when they played Kansas City is a great show too!), and I decided it would be best to bring you this nice long second set for this holiday Deadpod. Any set that opens with a Help->Slip->Franklin's is off on the right foot, and then Brent delivers a pretty fair 'Far From Me'.. Estimated into He's Gone always opens up new spaces.. I love the Truckin' out of space into a wonderful Wharf Rat, which for me is the highlight of the set.. Of course its nice to have a US Blues encore to celebrate the 4th!! Five Seasons Center, Cedar Rapids, IA (7/4/84) set 2 Help on the Way Slipknot! Franklin's Tower Far From Me Estimated Prophet He's Gone drums Truckin' Wharf Rat Around and Around Good Lovin' U.S. Blues You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070414.mp3 THANK YOU for your support of the Deadpod! have a safe and HAPPY 4th!
This is really premium, classic Grateful Dead. This second set from may in Montana rolls out from an unusual US Blues, El Paso opener into a nice Row Jimmy. The Weather Report Suite that follows is quite perfect and the transition into Dark Star is impeccable. Listen to how it flows into China Doll.. my words won't add to that experience.. enjoy it and feel it fill you. Not Fade Away->Goin' Down the Road is flat out rockin'. No way you won't enjoy this music my friends. This week we will hear the rest of Grateful Dead's performance at the Scope in Norfolk, VA, on April 3rd, 1982. After that interesting Scarlet->Fire we heard to close last week's Deadpod, the band goes into a fairly long and jammy Estimated, then a nice Eyes into Brent's "Never Trust A Woman" - while this may not have been your favorite back in the day, I admit I really enjoy listening to Brent now.. after the drums/space, the band goes into a nice NFA->Stella Blue.. an always welcome US Blues encore rounds out an enjoyable show..Grateful Dead - April 3, 1982Scope - Norfolk, VAEyes Of The World ->Never Trust A Woman ->Drums ->Space ->Not Fade Away ->Stella Blue ->One More Saturday NightEncore:U.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod041610.mp3Thanks for listening - and if you happen to be getting some dough back from Uncle Sam, you can always share a little with the Deadpod by clicking our 'Donate' button on the top of the page ;)
Happy 4th of July!! Since this week's Deadpod falls on the 4th I decided to share a show that ranks up with some of the most memorable I ever attended - July 4th, 1990 at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. Man was it ever *hot* - broiling - they had no ice at the venue.. I remember when certain substances kicked in and the sun was broiling us and we were giggling about that old frying pan commercial - "this is your brain on drugs"....... It was all worth it however when we were treated to this performance.. I'm bringing you the second set - which contains a fabulous Scarlet->Fire and a heart wrenching Stella Blue.. along with a rousing US Blues encore.. I hope you enjoy it!Grateful DeadSandstone Amphitheatre Bonner Springs, KS 7/4/90 - Wednesday Two Victim Or The Crime > Foolish Heart > Just A Little Light > Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Drums > Space > The Wheel > Gimme Some Lovin' > Stella Blue > Sugar MagnoliaEncore U.S. BluesYou can listen to the Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod070408.mp3
This week we have a new release of a classic Dead show, this one from the start of the summer of 1973. This week we'll listen to the first set, which as you can see from the setlist below contains plenty of surprises for a first set! Besides the very unusual opening Morning Dew, it contains the last version of 'Wave that Flag' before this song morphs into US Blues. I think you'll agree that Garcia is in fine voice on this show and I'm confident you'll enjoy yourself as you listen!
