612. Part 2 of our conversation with Carlis Wright Robinson. In response to racial segregation in Major League Baseball, African American players and officials formed their own league, titled, The Negro Leagues. Despite not playing in Major League Baseball, Wright, like countless other African Americans in baseball at that time, by their mere presence and participation in baseball at that time in America, rejected racism and served as pioneers for future generations. Johnny Wright was one of the excellent players who remained in the Negro League. Wright's daughter, Carlis Wright Robinson, recently shared her father's story and history in her book, The Wright Side of History: The Life and Career of Johnny Wright, Co-Pioneer in Breaking Baseball's Color Barrier, as Told by His Daughter (In Due Season Publishing). Crowds came by the thousands to Municipal Auditorium in Oklahoma City to see the first television images in Oklahoma at a demonstration sponsored by WKY Radio on November 13, 1939. Despite television being a financial drain on broadcasters who had tried it before, E.K. Gaylord believed Oklahoma deserved it, so he applied for a license and was granted the first station in Oklahoma. On June 6, 1949 at 7:00 p.m., WKY-TV went on the air. In this episode, Trait Thompson and Dr. Bob Blackburn discuss how the new technology was embraced by the Gaylords, the popular shows and personalities on WKY-TV and later KFOR, and the impact television has made on Oklahoma. Larry talks about the significance of the show, including the band's transition in music style, notable songs played, and the presence of famous basketball player Bill Walton in the audience. Later, Alex discusses recent concerts they attended, highlighting U2's performance at The Sphere in Las Vegas, known for its immersive audiovisual experience, and another show at the historic Castro Theater in San Francisco featuring the band St. Paul and the Broken Bones. Both Larry and Alex express enthusiasm about these diverse musical experiences..Produced by PodConx  Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast  Grateful DeadNovember 20, 1971Pauley Pavillion – UCLAL.A.Grateful Dead Live at Pauley Pavilion - University of California on 1971-11-20 : Free Borrow & Streaming : Internet Archive By late 1971 Dead's transformation from Primal Dead to Americana Dead was well on it's way.  This concert is a great snapshot of that time, this show being more in the Americana camp with the a killer 25 minute jammed out Other One (including its Bill Kreutzman drum solo lead in) really being the only true nod to the Primal era . Also, the band was in transition as Pigpen missed the show as part of his descent into alcohol related illnesses that eventually took him in March 1973.  Keith had been playing with the band since February but Mickey began his “leave” in February after night one of the Capitol Theater run.  So this night is just five of them up on stage playing their hearts out for the fine students of UCLA and other Deadheads ( then a very brand new “thing” having just been recognized by the band in the liner message inside the Grateful Dead album stating:  “DEAD FREAKS UNITE!  WHO ARE YOU?  WHERE ARE YOU?  HOW ARE YOU? Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed”) One fact that should be obvious given the venue and the time – an unknown UCLA student and want-a-be college basketball player, Bill Walton was in attendance along with some of his Bruins teammates for this first ever Dead show at Pauley Pavilion, famed home court for the UCLA Bruins, a team that following the amazing successes of Lew Alcindor (Kareem) and Sidney Wicks, now was being led for the first time by Bill and his teammates Jamaal Wilkes and Greg Lee (spoiler alert:  Bill has some success at UCLA too).  Bill, of course, went on to be an NBA All-Star and a regular attendee of Dead shows and, as Alex can attest, not unusual to see him at a West Coast dead show right up until the end – kind of hard to miss a 7 foot deadhead with his red hair and tie dye apparel.  Rumor has it when they knew he was going to be at a show the band would set up a basketball hoop backstage and that Bruce Hornsby was a hooper too. INTRO:               Bertha                           Track No. 1                           3:30 – 4:37 Great traditional opener although it was known to pop up in different spots during shows from time to time.  At this point, it is still “new” having been debuted earlier that year, on February 18th at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester.  Never released on a studio album, but it is the opening tune on the Dead's live album, “Grateful Dead” a/k/a Skull and Roses (or Phil's preferred name, “Skull Fuck” which was promptly rejected by their label, Warner Bros) on September 24, 1971.  From shows in NYC at the Fillmore East and the Hammerstein Ballroom in the Manhattan Center (plus Johnny B. Goode from Winterland – couldn't completely ignore the west coast). SHOW #1:          Tennessee Jed                           Track No. 5                           0:45 – 1:46 This is one of the “new” ones played in this show.  Along with Mexicali Blues, One More Saturday Night, Ramble On Rose and Jack Straw had all just been played for the first ever just two months earlier on October 19, 1971 at the Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis – also Keith's first show.  A tune that more than most really captures the change in the band's direction as you have Garcia previously of Dark Star, St. Stephen and Eleven fame twanging away, musically and vocally, on a song with a feel that is a cross between country, western and a dash of rock n roll.  Deadheads of Alex's and my era will note how much quicker the tempo is in this early version and Garcia's noticeable energy evident from his strong vocal performance. Played 436 times in concert, putting it at No. 15 of the list of the Dead's most played tunes.1st (again) on Oct. 19, 1971 in MPLSLast on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field, Chicago A great sing along tune that the Deadheads always enjoyed, normally found in the first set, towards the middle. SHOW #2:          Jack Straw                           Track No. 10                           :12 – 1:20 As just mentioned, this another “new” one just two months old.  Everyone loves Jack Straw, even the Band which is why it checks in at No. on list of most tunes played by the Band with 476 performances (last one on July 8, 1995 at Soldier Field).  But in this early version, there is a little bit of a change from the version we all know and love.  First, thing to know it is a tune by Hunter and Weir.  Garcia did not write it although he sang it with Weir in a “trading off of verses” style.  Second, in these early versions, before the Europe '72 tour, Weir sang all the verses like we just heard, “I just jumped the watchman, right outside the fence” was always sung by Jerry, but here, Weir sings it. Not sure of the reason for the change, but I like it a lot better with Jerry singing his verses (the other being “Gotta go to Tulsa, first train we can ride”).  First time with Jerry on vocals was May 3, 1972 at the Olympia Theater in Paris, that also just happens to be the version of the song that wound up on the Europe '72 album.  Although in its earlier years the song would appear in either first or second set, after their 1975 hiatus it became an almost exclusive first set song. And after Brent joined the band, almost always a show opener.  Home to the more than occasional Phil base bomb, it was one of the Band's most popular tunes and a great way to open any show (especially if they had just opened with Bertha the night before so you got to catch them both!). SHOW #3:          Ramble On Rose                           Track No. 18                           0:00 – 1:28 Last of the “new” ones that we will feature today.  Just like Tennessee Jed, upbeat, good energy, Jerry and the boys are having fun, like with any new creation.  Still working out all the details, the james, keeping track of the lyrics and Jerry has not yet developed his signature growl on “goodbye mamma and poppa, goodbye jack and jill”.  What I really like about this version and why I chose a clip from the beginning of the tune is to hear Keith's piano accompaniment that works so well with this song and adds another layer of creativity to the mix.  Garcia always seemed to get energy and inspiration from the band's keyboard players and Keith, even this early in his career, is no exception. After its introduction on Oct. 19, 1971 in Minny, played a total of 319 times, good for 39th place on the all time list, just behind US Blues and just ahead of Don't Ease Me In (really?).  Last played on June 27, 1995 at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI. SHOW #4:          You Win Again                           Track No. 20                           1:12 – 2:21 "You Win Again" is a 1952 song by Hank Williams. In style, the song is a blues ballad and deals with the singer's despair with his partner. The song has been widely covered, including versions by Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, the Grateful Dead, Charley Pride, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones. Hank Williams recorded "You Win Again" on July 11, 1952—one day after his divorce from Audrey Williams was finalized. Like "Cold, Cold Heart," the song was likely inspired by his tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, "You Win Again" was released as the B-side to "Settin' the Woods on Fire", primarily because up-tempo, danceable numbers were preferable as A-sides for radio play and for the valuable jukebox trade. Nonetheless, "You Win Again" peaked at number ten on the Most Played in C&W Juke Boxes chart, where it remained for a single week. Over a time period of less than one year, the Dead played You Win Again 24 times in concert, the first on November 11, 1971 at the Municipal Auditorium in Austin, TX (this show in L.A. was only the third time it had been played) and the last on September 16, 1972 at The Music Hall in Boston.  A version of the song was released on the Europe '72 album (second album side), from their show on May 24, 1972 at The Strand Lyceum in London, one of the final shows on that tour. JGB recorded a version of the song in 1976 during the Reflections album sessions but not played live again.  It was briefly revived by The Dead with Dylan in 2003.  OUTRO:          Going Down The Road Feeling Bad                        Track No. 23                        3:45 – 5:12 "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" (also known as the "Lonesome Road Blues") is a traditional American folk song, "a white blues of universal appeal and uncertain origin" The song was recorded by many artists through the years. The first known recording is from 1923 by Henry Whitter, an Appalachian singer,[2][3]as "Lonesome Road Blues". The earliest versions of the lyrics are from the perspective of an inmate in prison with the refrain, "I'm down in that jail on my knees" and a reference to eating "corn bread and beans."[4] The song has been recorded by many artists such as Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Skeeter Davis, Elizabeth Cotten, and the Grateful Dead, and the song is featured in To Bonnie from Delaney, "Mountain Jam", Born and Raised World Tour, The Grapes of Wrath, and Lucky Stars.Others who recorded it include Cliff Carlisle (also as "Down in the Jail on My Knees"), Woody Guthrie (also as "Blowin' Down This Road" or "I Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way"), Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Roy Hall, Elizabeth Cotten and the Grateful Dead, Delaney and Bonnie, Canned Heat and Dillard Chandler. Dead played it 302 times (No. 46 on the most played tunes list just behind a tie between Mama Tried and Terrapin and just ahead of Birdsong).  1st time on October 10, 1970 at Colden Auditorium, part of Queens College in Queens, NY.Last played on July 5, 1985 at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, MO. During the time period of this show it was almost always paired with Not Fade Away (as made famous at the end of the Grateful Dead album).  In later years, when Alex and I were regulars on tour, it would show up as a second set tune, usually, but not always after Drums/Space.  A very upbeat tune that the band obviously loved playing the crowd loved hearing. For our purposes, a great way to end the show and say goodbye and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Nucor Steel looks to women and recovery program graduates to help fill 800 job openings. A new disc golf course transforms an old flood plain in Ceredo. And the Charleston Coliseum and Convention center sets new venue records--#YesWV!...on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Nucor Steel West Virginia Vice President and General Manager John Farris says he has no doubt the large steelmaker will be able to fill the 800 permanent jobs that will be created with the completion of the $3 billion sheet steel plant to be under construction soon in Mason County. Farris said one of the goals is to target more women for employment. “We're currently putting together an RFQ (Request for Qualifications) to have on-site child care,” Farris said on MetroNews “Talkline.” “At the premise of that is we want to encourage more women to choose steelmaking as a career and obviously that's (on-site child care) going to appeal to families at large.” Farris said Nucor has also been engaged with the state's Jobs and Hope program that helps those coming out of substance use disorder get jobs along with ongoing talks with Marshall Addictive Medicine for second chance employment. Jobs will be posted on Nucor's website, www.nucor.com/westvirginia. Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/25/nucor-employment-goals-include-hiring-more-women-and-working-with-recovery-programs/   #2 – From WCHS-TV –  A new outdoor recreation option is now available in Wayne County thanks to a major land reclamation project in the form of an 18-hole disc golf course. The new track – located at 1597 B Street – is an anomaly in the Mountain State as the landscape is relatively flat, but heavily wooded fairways and sheer length provide ample challenge for advanced disc golfers. The Wayside Disc Golf Course was designed by West Virginia Disc Golf Hall of Famers Johnny Sias and Phil Bryant. The land remained unused for years as part of a flood plain of the Ohio River, but local officials and volunteers saw value in the property. Ceredo Mayor Paul Billups expects the course to make an economic impact as players stop at restaurants, gas stations and area businesses. He said Ceredo's newest addition also pairs well with the town's ballfield and pickleball courts, giving residents and visitors another option for recreation and physical activity. Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin joined the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Board to make the announcement. Earlier this month the complex hosted three sold-out shows and one at 90 percent capacity in the span of one week, resulting in new venue records being set. “Two and a half years ago we decided to change the way we operate the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center Complex. Through our continued partnership with OVG360 we have seen more big-name concerts, comedy shows, family events and – more folks packing the Coliseum and Convention Center and the Municipal Auditorium,” Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said.  “Now, more than ever, it is imperative we invest in our future, so that we can continue to capitalize on the energy, excitement, and positive forward momentum.” The average annual food and beverage earnings have also doubled as compared to pre-pandemic data. Communities in Schools build community partnerships and bring resources into schools to prevent student dropout and increase graduation rates, according to State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Communities In Schools has had a life-changing impact on thousands of students in our state,” Blatt said. “The relationships between site coordinators, schools, students, and families are at the core of this success. These students need support and structures that help them recover from setbacks and regain the confidence to believe they can do great things. Communities in Schools is essential to opening options and pathways for those needing hope and a vision for their future.” The new counties are Barbour, Boone, Cabell, Doddridge, Hancock, Jefferson, Marion, Mason, Mineral, Monongalia, Ohio, Pocahontas, Putnam, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt, and Wood. We're getting used to this in Kansas City: The top-rated men's basketball conference is the Big 12. The best conference tournament? Also the Big 12. The annual show comes to T-Mobile Center for the men starting on Wednesday and the women's tournament begins at Municipal Auditorium on Sunday. On today's SportsBeat KC, beat writer Kellis Robinett breaks down the men's tournament, a even in which nearly every game will match teams that will be playing in the NCAA Tournament the following week. Kansas is the top seed, followed by Texas, Kansas State and Baylor. Seven Big 12 teams should be in the NCAA field, and it's possible an eighth team could get there. There could be two teams that reach the NCAA playing in Wednesday's opening round. And for planning purposes, the tournaments will remain in Kansas City through at least 2027. What would you get if you put the heaviness of Converge, the industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails and Type O Negative, the catchiness of '90s metalcore, the frantic delivery of Black Flag, and the sampled-chopped-and-glitched production of hip-hop into a blender and hit liquefy? You'd get 100 percent of your daily intake of Code Orange. The band was formed—as the Code Orange Kids—in 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Eric “Shade” Balderose (vocals, keys, programming, and guitars), Reba Meyers (guitars and bass), Jami Morgan (drums and vocals), and guitarist Greg Kern (who left in 2010). The current lineup also includes bassist Joe Goldman and guitarist Dominic Landolina. They've always played heavy and fast, rising quickly in the hardcore ranks with 2012's Love Is Love/Return to Dust and 2014's I Am King, but things took a dramatic, dense turn in 2017. (The band shortened their name ahead of the 2014 release.) Their Grammy-nominated, critically-acclaimed third and fourth albums, 2017's Forever and 2020's Underneath, incorporated all hues of heavy—drawn from all corners of crunch. In a https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/code-orange-attack-of-the-sonic-cyborgs (2020 interview with PG), Meyers explained the progression: “We took as much of it into our own hands that we could—writing, recording, mixing, mastering—and it drove us crazy, but we knew if we really did this record how we imagined it, it could become something that we're extremely proud of and is recognized by people beyond the niche world of hardcore that we come from. That was proven to us a little bit on Forever, because of the Grammy nod. We realized that if we really took what we do to the absolute fucking edge, we could make something important and bigger than ourselves. Especially bigger than our individual selves, because it's a full-band effort.” Creativity and performance are one thing, but how does a guitarist convey all the ideas in his or her head into a specific sound and where does that explorer mentality arise? “We didn't have shit growing up. I would borrow people's old Carvin amps that barely worked, and through that you'd learn what really mattered. The crap gear sometimes would produce cool sounds that you wouldn't expect, and your ears grow and evolve,” recalls Meyers. “Bottom line, what matters most is your hands, your creativity, and your performance. For that reason, I pick pedals that are loud and proud to speak in my language and Code Orange's language.” The afternoon before Code Orange's middle slot for hip-hop duo $uicideboy$'s arena tour stop at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium, Meyers pulled her gear aside and invited PG's Chris Kies backstage to catalog her eviscerating setup. In this RR, she details her signature ESPs (and why they no longer have EMGs), shows how she breaks down the digital-versus-analog wall by pairing an Axe-Fx III with a 100W 5150, and chronicles the “toys” she enlists to converse in the band's dialect. It's common for prog bands to create a fictitious narrative for their concept albums. Often, the lyrics tell a linear story, while the adventurous, experimental, and elevated musicianship provides emotional support and dynamism to the album's arc. Some ambitious wordsmiths may even spread their yarn over two albums or releases, but Coheed and Cambria's Claudio Sanchez has penned an entire science fiction tale called https://www.boom-studios.com/series/amory-wars/ (The Amory Wars) that has been transcribed in comic books and graphic novels published by Evil Ink Comics. All but one of the band's 10 albums, including the brand-new Vaxis–Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind swim in his solar system called Heaven's Fence—a collection of 78 planets and seven stars wholly envisioned by Sanchez. (The Color Before the Sun, from 2015, is the lone release not centered in The Amory Wars universe.) Crafting a daring soundtrack for these narratives requires an equally bold group of musicians. Through two decades, this fearless foursome have incorporated prog orchestrations, synth flourishes, pop-punk hooks, menacing metalcore, hardcore aggression, and electronica ballads—and yet it's always felt like Coheed. No matter the direction they turn or how their colors and hues shift, it's unmistakable. Having no genre allows for all genres. It's worth noting the band's name is lifted from two main characters in The Amory Wars. Their original name in the late '90s was Shabütie, and that trio (consisting of guitarist/vocalist Sanchez, bassist Michael Todd, and drummer Nate Kelley) released three EPs before rebranding for Coheed's 2002 debut, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, released on Equal Vision Records. That first Coheed lineup included the Shabütie carryovers of Sanchez and Todd, and welcomed guitarist Travis Stever and drummer Josh Eppard. (The earliest incarnations of Shabütie included Stever, too.) The band's current lineup has been solid since 2012, when bassist Zach Cooper joined. Coheed's headlining 2022 run is a dual celebration. They're honoring the 20th anniversary of their debut and the just-released Vaxis–Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind. Before their July 23 show at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium, PG's Chris Kies hosted conversations that covered upgrading Gibsons, overhauling an entire bass rig during shutdown, and how a stolen Big Muff eventually led to a signature sound and pedal. STOP the desecration of this historically significant and sacred ground! The City of New Orleans proposes to convert the Municipal Auditorium to a City Hall office building. This action would have a significant adverse impact to the historical nature and purpose of the original Municipal Auditorium. WE DEMAND A PUBLIC HEARING!! The ground on which the Municipal Auditorium sits, is a part of Congo Square. It is one of the most significant pieces of real estate in the cultural legacy of New Orleans and, by extension, the world. This land and its structures should be expressly dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of our ancestors and to sustaining and developing that legacy for current and future generations. We propose the rehabilitation of this invaluable community asset be undertaken with a focus on remembering and honoring its historic role as: 1) a site of cultural celebrations and gatherings for the indigenous populations who were its stewards before the arrival of Europeans and Africans; 2) a site of repression, state-sanctioned executions, but also a space of respite from enslavement on Sundays when the area was known as Place Congo or Congo Square and evolved into the acknowledged birthplace of jazz, other forms of popular music, and distinctively new forms of American social dance; 3) a marker for the displacement and destruction of the predominately Black communities that were forcibly removed from the area to make way for the construction of the Municipal Auditorium in the 1920s and later, from the 1950s-1970s, the entire 32-acre site that is known today as Louis Armstrong Park. We the undersigned do hereby demand that all elected officials in New Orleans and those under their authority immediately cease and desist any and all plans to convert the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium and surrounding land for office spaces, and governmental uses by the City of New Orleans.

The first Convention Hall no longer stands, but it paved the way for the current Convention Center that spans eight city blocks and boasts a variety of spaces to accommodate events from UMKC basketball games to car shows. Convention Hall opened on February 22, 1899 with a performance by John Phillip Sousa's band. It hosted other notable guests before burning to the ground in April 1900, just three months before the Democratic National Convention was slated to be held at the venue. The community banded together to raise funds and complete a brand new building to replace the Convention Hall in time to host the Democratic National Convention. After opening the second Convention Center just in time for the Democratic National Convention it went on to host more notable events, including a Republican National Convention, before being replaced by the Municipal Auditorium. The Municipal Auditorium, built in 1934, was more upscale and larger than the Convention Hall it replaced. Today, events hosted at one of Municipal Auditorium's four venues – Music Hall, Municipal Arena, The Little Theater and Exhibition Hall – are uniquely elegant, as all have been restored to their mid-century glamour. Since the building of the Municipal Auditorium more expansions and renovations have graced downtown Kansas City's convention complex. The most noteworthy expansion was the completion of Bartle Hall in 1994. Named for H. Roe Bartle, Bartle Hall boasts the largest column-free exhibit space and the four art deco inspired pylons that support the roof. The pylons and crowning sculptures, designed by artist R.M. Fisher, are a pillar of the Kansas City skyline. The first Convention Hall was an achievement for downtown Kansas City, providing space for large scale events and paving the way for today's convention complex that includes the Municipal Auditorium, Conference Center, Bartle Hall and a beautiful outdoor event space, Barney Allis Plaza.
