Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. She's famous for her work in radioactivity. Lin-Manual Miranda is a songwriter, producer and director who won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 2016, as well as several Tony awards. What do they have in common? They lived a century apart. They innovated in disparate fields. But they shared a similar productivity practice. Both achieved greatness by embracing the practice of slow productivity, says Georgetown computer science professor Cal Newport. Slow productivity is a three-part practice, Newport explains: (1) do fewer things; (2) work at a natural pace; (3) obsess over quality. We're used to thinking of productivity as doing more in a short amount of time. This flips that idea on its head, focusing on doing less, but excelling. Slow productivity is the practice of doing fewer tasks better. In this episode, Newport explains how the practice of slow productivity diverges from the normal ways that people in modern society tend to work. Life can be stressful. Your to-do list might feel never-ending. This episode can help you focus on the few things that matter most. It can help you feel less stressed, less busy, and yet — paradoxically — more productive, at the same time. We're sharing this as part of GREATEST HITS WEEK, a 5-day series in which we're sharing 5 episodes, across 5 days, that originally aired at the start of 2024 (January through March). Performance is as much science as it is art says this week's guest, Javier Muñoz. But Javier also knows that the Universe is vast and always looking out for him. Javier is one of the kindest, most sincere people on Broadway and this conversation is filled with beautiful moments so don't miss a second. With stage credits that include the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival's off-Broadway show hit All Is Love, In the Heights, and of course Hamilton (where he took over for Lin-Manual Miranda and earned the title of “Sexy Hamilton”). TV and film credits include of course the 2021 release of In the Heights, Blindspot, Odd Mom Out, Shadow Vaults, Eureka!, Central Park, Quantico, and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. He is now starring alongside Jessie Mueller in My Heart Says Go, a musical concept album which is available for streaming now. Connect with Javier on Instagram and listen to My Heart Says Go! Don't forget to catch the companion podcast Javier did on The Theatre Podcast With Alan Seales as well. From an early age, Javier recorded “Fame” and learned the dance moves and mashed them with popular music, and created his own music videos. In 5th grade, Javier went on his first camping trip and discovered a true night sky filled with stars and it fully changed him. From there his dream was Astro Physicist and study Astronomy. Science is just exploration, curiosity, and asking questions and that's exactly was a good actor does with a script. Javier was a first-generation college student. Mentors are, literally, everything! It took Javier a long time to become introspective and really look inside himself. In 2002 Javier got HIV and couldn't book a gig for anything so he quit the business and took a job at a high-end restaurant in Hell's Kitchen. He decided to do this one last show that his friend Josh has written and while in the rehearsal room, he meets someone who wants him to audition for In The Heights. He agrees to do two weeks at Manhattan Theatre Club. Unfortunately, his part in the show got cut and this lead to him taking over the lead after Lin-Manuel Miranda Next thing you know Lin-Manuel Miranda put Javier through “rap school.” When it came time for Hamilton, Javier and Lin teamed up again to create the character of Alexander Hamilton. Javier got a direct offer to do My Heart Says Go and he took it without even seeing the music and script. Whatever you chose is right, because you chose it. When things don't work out or go my way I really do trust that it's for a reason. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

BYU professor and artist Anthony Sweat wrote in his recent book, Repicturing the Restoration, about the [in]famous conflict between founding father John Adams and painter John Trumbull. Adams criticized Trumbull for painting the signing of the Declaration of Independence without depicting the arguments and debates that took place and without which, Adams said, Trumbull's picture was a fiction" under pretense of poetical or graphical licenses." Lin Manual Miranda, in his smash hit Hamilton originally proposed starting with a song called, "No John Trumbull." Our study this week places us right in the middle of one of many complicated stories of the Bible. Far from trying to simplify or streamline it, we want to sit with it this week and allow ourselves time to consider just how our own paths and experiences in life are a lot messier than we might like. In short, what you're about to read is "no John Trumbull." Show Notes: Connect with us on Instagram or Facebook Music: "Beauty of Russia" by Steve Oxen
We Don't Talk About Bruno, the number 1 hit song, written by Lin-Manual Miranda for the Disney movie Encanto, is all about a member of the Madrigal family who no one talks about, Bruno. Encanto is a movie about family, but it's also about trauma and how families connect, separate and become estranged. For a Disney movie, there are some very heavy themes, including war and violence and ruptures within what family members expect from each other and what they can't accept. We all have been told and taught that family bonds are unbreakable but for many, family is their pain, and these relationships are broken. There's a certain type of loneliness that comes from being estranged from family, in choosing to depart from the ties that are part of our genetics and our lineage. Hosted on Acast. This week on End Credits, we will try and lift spirits. How? Through the transformative power of song and dance, of course! We're going to review the [theoretically] big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical In the Heights, and we will also talk about the movies from the summer of 1990, where there were hardly any musical numbers at all (save for a horrid Leonard Cohen cover.) This Wednesday, June 23, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Summer Lovin' Part 7: 1990. As we proceed with our review of summer movies seasons of the past, we leave the 80s and we enter the 90s. As we discussed last week, 1989 changed the game with more emphasis on sequels and franchises, and 1990 tried to move that ball upfield, but there were some hiccups. So this week, we will talk about how Dick Tracy wasn't Batman, the existence of RoboCop 2 and Another 48 Hrs., plus two movies with "Ghost" in the title. REVIEW: In the Heights (2021). In 2015, Lin-Manual Miranda blew up when he launched a new musical Off-Broadway about American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. About a decade before that though, Miranda made his first Broadway splash with a musical about his New York City neighbourhood. It was called In the Heights, and after a stint in Development Hell and a release delay caused by COVID-19, the movie version directed by Crazy Rich Asians helmer Jon M. Chu is finally ready for release, but does this musical have what it takes to raise spirits? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.
Soccer in the City returns with the boys breaking down NYCFC's loss to New England, the upcoming match versus Atlanta, and the electric debut of Thiago. Please share this episode with friends who need Dad & Me & Hamilton the hip-hop musical in their life! The production company behind Hamilton the musical has given us the soundtrack and the full rights to use it – so you’ll hear some big numbers in this episode. You’ll also hear what you can learn about history from a hip-hop musical that treats its audience as the intelligent beings that our listeners are! There are some big plot spoilers in here – but no worse than if you simply listen to the musical’s soundtrack. On Disney+, Hamilton the musical is rated PG-13, but we spare you the worst of the language here. You will hear ‘damn’ and ‘hell’ amid the lyrics of the songs we include from the Hamilton musical. (Lin-Manual Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, also composed the music for Moana; the two sound rather different.) Spoiler Warning! Chris and Taylor review the HBO fantasy series "His Dark Materials," based off the novels by Phillip Pullman. Covering both the first and second seasons, in a world filled with daemons, armored bears and witches a young girl named Lyra is destined to meet a young boy named Will to travel across multiple worlds to stop the evil Magisterium. The cast includes Daphne Keen, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy, Amir Wilson, Will Keen, Lin Manual-Miranda and Andrew Scott.
What is a legacy? As the artist Lin-Manual Miranda tells us, it's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see. American presidents, regardless of party, spend a great deal of time during their presidencies and after they leave office thinking about their own legacies, and how people will study and remember their administrations. Whether the 2020 presidential election results in a second term for President Trump or an inaugural one for a President Biden, both men and the people in their administrations are or will be thinking about what to plant in those gardens. Today's show builds on this week's virtual George Washington Symposium at the Washington Library, which is dedicated to consequential elections in American presidential history. On the podcast, we explore one aspect of how modern presidents and their administrations preserve records and memories of the past through oral history. Dr. Evan D. McCormick joins Jim Ambuske today to talk about the Obama Presidency Oral History Project at Columbia University's Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theory and Empirics or (INCITE). McCormick is an Associate Research Scholar with the project, and Columbia was chosen by the Obama Foundation in 2019 to oversee the oral history initiative. McCormick is also a historian of the United States and the World, and he is completing a book on Ronald Reagan's policies toward Latin America. Ambuske and McCormick dive into the significance of conducting oral histories for preserving and interpreting the legacy of modern presidents, the shape of the Obama Project, and the contrasts between the kinds of sources that historians of early and modern America use to reconstruct the past. About Our Guest: Evan D McCormick an associate research scholar at Columbia University's Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theory and Empirics (INCITE) where he works on the Obama Presidency Oral History project. Evan is an historian of the United States and the world, and is completing a book on Ronald Reagan's policies toward Latin America. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Virginia (2015) and an M.A. in International Relations from Yale University (2007). He has held postdoctoral fellowships from the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University and the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin. From 2007-2009, he was a policy fellow at the Department of Homeland Security, spanning both the Bush and Obama administrations. About Our Host: Jim Ambuske, Ph.D. leads the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. A historian of the American Revolution, Scotland, and the British Atlantic World, Ambuske graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016. He is a former Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia Law Library. At UVA Law, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project. He is currently at work on a book about emigration from Scotland in the era of the American Revolution as well as a chapter on Scottish loyalism during the American Revolution for a volume to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press.

It's the one thing we've probably all been desperate to obtain, so it's hardly surprising that Em and Michael are feeling it too, hence they've decided that this episode of Emsolation will be a Trump free zone. They just need a break from the toxic Cheeto wizard right now, and we're pretty sure that no one, aside from Donald himself, is about to disagree with that decision. Instead they'll focus more on the lighter stuff, like two shows they really love at the moment. For instance, there's a famous podcast that's just been turned into a documentary series on Netflix, it's called ‘Song Exploder' and it's basically where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. The debut series follows artists like Michael Stipe from R.E.M., Alicia Keys, Ty Dolla $ign and Lin-Manual Miranda, the creator of the hugely successful musical ‘Hamilton', all revealing the process of how they created one of their greatest songs. Obviously Em and Michael absolutely LOVED it and they both cried their way through it as well. They then talk about Rihanna and her recent lingerie show for her Savage X Fenty - Volume 2 range. Em got emotional because she felt finally represented, there were real women doing the modelling, you could see their actual skin properly, with the lighting showing off the beauty of their stretch marks, the cellulite, their tan lines, just all of the things that normal people have, that the beauty industry tries to make us believe doesn't exist. So again they absolutely loved it, and they're both really feeling how Rihanna has morphed into this cool creative overlord now. So prepare for a delightful traipse through a podcast episode devoted to a bit of escapism and filled to the brim with delightful things for our ears and eyes, Em and Michael loved it, and we're pretty sure you will too. Welcome to Just 4 Starters Episode 3! This week we explore our thoughts on how long in-person classes at colleges might ACTUALLY last, how unique Lin-Manual Miranda's voice sounds in Hamilton, and how we all might be flying on planes without pilots in the near future. Thanks 4 Starting!
Continuing with our Lin-Manual Miranda month of July, we do Bring It On!We review Tom's River High School's performance of Bring It On: The Musical from March of 2017. We had a hard time finding musical specific facts so we dipped into the movie. And we find out which Bring It On characters Behr and I are.As always, we update you on all the Broadway and musical news and happenings.
We watched "Hamilton" as a family and loved it! Lin-Manual Miranda is genius and so talented. We can't stop singing the songs and I keep finding myself singing, "You'll be back" or "I am Alexander Hamilton". There was an incredible lesson in leadership that was introduced in the earliest scenes of the play and played out in the Election of 1800. Aaron Burr was portrayed as an excellent politician, but held no definite position. In the play, here's Burr's advice to Hamilton in the opening. "Talk less. Smile more. Don't let them know what you're against of what you're for." Hamilton's response was, "you can't be serious." Burr simply stated as a politician would. "You wanna get ahead? Fools who run their mouth off wind up dead." Burr followed his own advice and climbed the political ranks. Hamilton did not listen and held a position and made it known. He didn't care who he offended because the ones that agreed, followed him. He was a leader. Burr was a politician. In the Election of 1800, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr were deadlocked until they asked for Alexander Hamilton's endorsement. Hamilton hated Jefferson, yet he chose him. Here's his words in the play. "I have never agreed with Jefferson once. We have fought on like seventy-five different fronts. But when all is said and all is done, Jefferson has beliefs, Burr has none." Jefferson became the third president and the wound Hamilton inflicted on Burr's pride ultimately caused the duel that killed him. 216 years after the famous duel between the leader and the politician, Burr is vilified and Hamilton has a Broadway show honoring his life and accomplishments. Leaders stand for something and their mark is remembered. It's the difference between the lighthouse and the bouy. Burr is a buoy, rising and falling with the tides of life and popular opinion. Hamilton was the lighthouse, a rock-solid structure leading others to freedom.

What do you mean, Nat & Stu diverged into Disney discussions when they should have been talking about For Your Eyes Only? With their reputation? Well yes, it was bound to happen. Excised for time, here's what happened when Natalie went off on the Disney films she hasn't seen, which turned into a dissection of the Aladdin stage musical, and finally Hamilton. This was recorded a couple of days before the filmed stage production of Hamilton dropped on Disney on July 3. It's worth a watch while you wait for the main For Your Eyes Only pod (a shabby attempt to equate ourselves with the greatness of Lin-Manual Miranda).
In this episode of Movie Magic, we feature some wise words from Star Wars plus what the colors of the lightsabers represent. Chris Yeh returns and we discuss: Behind the scenes on how podcasts are made. How Lin-Manual Miranda did a "Blitzscale" move with his hit musical Hamilton. How Kawhi's "Uncle Dennis" is an example of a mainstream narrative clashing with the actual story. We use that to springboard into how the Lakers narratives are wrong. We also discuss what the heck has happened in LA the last two years and the state of the Lakers going forward. We discuss a little bit about Kobe's legacy and if Paul Pierce was a better franchise player. Tune in!
The shock of their abrupt landing abruptly fades as they ignore their fatigue and get to work breaking down the door. Rotted wood easily crumbles away, letting the seeping, inky blackness freely pour across the glimmering sand. Where stood the door now stands a gaping maw, quivering in anticipation. In a moment the Captain moves forward and beyond, frantically whispering, “Come on you grovel-mogels, get on it, into the deep and thick of it you fools, or we’ll never win the day.”It is a whisper, but her movements are sure, a confident stride forward and then the Captain has disappeared into the ink and thick of it. She is gone and lost and they can only follow. One by one the tiny crew steels themselves for forward and one by one they step into that awful darkness. The 2 little girls go last, hand in hand and with beating hearts.
Today I talk with Fiona Williams, Fiona hails from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She is a drama teacher at Archbishop MacDonald high school. She is also a mom to nine month old Abigail. Today we talk about maternity leave, the differences between being a teacher in Canada vs The United States, Heathers, Lin Manual Miranda and much more. Thanks so much Fiona.
Here is its. The review we hinted at in our If Beale Street Could Talk and Three Identical Strangers reviews, the problematic review itself: Mary Poppins Returns. Kriss, Ro and Brandon break down why this new Mary Poppins film is the perfect continuous from the original. Emily Blunt IS Mary Poppins and dominates the screen. But everyone else is pulling their weight as well. Lin-Manual Miranda really takes to his role as Jack and the film does a great job of blending an all new story and songs with the feeling of the original. So why is this review problematic? Let's just say Kriss tries to kill off Angela Lansbury, Brandon comes up with a Murder She Wrote update and Ro...well we're not sure what Ro did but we're pretty sure it was something. These negroes should never be allowed to review movies together. https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=7885691 Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! And while the 2 confident little girls were considered quite special and quite daring, there was a most strong and daring gal in a far away land who was proudly lauded by all important people as the MOST special of all gals. And oh boy was she, she could lift heavier things than anyone in town, she had moved a river once and she had stood up and defeated a mighty daemon of miss report all by herself. The 2 little girls were quite transfixed by this brave gal. They excitedly stalked her haunts with the hope of “bumping” into her. They meet in a “chance” moment. Their eyes glint brightly at the sight of one another.‘you are quite brave and quite most’“you 2 are quite daring and quite most”‘thank you’‘that is quite sweet of you to mention’“i don’t know if youre too busy, but, would you like to share a cup of cold star ether and a plate of warm biscuits?”‘that sounds most lovely’‘most lovely indeed’And so 3 strong gals share a cup and quite a moment together.

Welcome to the first episode of Msunderestimated: At Home! This week Amanda and Laura talk horses, Stranger Things, Lion King casting, Lin Manual Miranda, what pods and music we're listening to and which outed sexual harasser surprised us the most.
I am a huge fan of “Hamilton,” the smash Broadway musical created by Lin-Manual Miranda. “Hamilton” won 11 Tony awards in 2016 and has been the most talked-about musical in decades. It's one of the greatest works of art that has been released in my life. But there's another reason I'm such a big fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda: he took the time to send my son a handwritten card in the mail. As a result, I've found an even deeper respect for this celebrated artist. I've also learned three important lessons about valuing people, which I'll share in this episode. But there’s another reason I’m such a big fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda: he took the time to send my son a handwritten card in the mail. As a result, I’ve found an even deeper respect for this celebrated artist. I’ve also learned three important lessons about valuing people, which I’ll share in this episode. The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #139 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio "When we take the right to rest, when we make rest fulfilling, and when we practice rest through our days and years, we also make our lives richer and more fulfilling." —Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, author of Rest: Why You Get More Done when You Work Less Charles Darwin partook in regular 10 miles walks, Alice Munro walked three miles each day, Winston Churchill engaged in painting, Lin-Manual Miranda took his dog each Sunday for walks through the parks in New York City, J.R.R. Tolkien and Ray Bradbury took daily afternoon naps, workers at Bletchley Park during WWII chose chess as a favorite pastime and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court Elena Kagan boxes regularly with her personal trainer. Initially when the word 'rest' is mentioned, we may think of sitting on the sofa, flipping through channels, but the difference between mindless rest and deliberate rest is that it "enables productivity". When we truly rest, our minds are not actually stagnant. In actuality, we are enabling them to do what they need to do, work through, dispose of, find and reach understandings and connections that when we are active at work, it is unable to do completely. The difference between mindless and deliberate rest is what you are feeding your brain. Sitting down and watching a thoughtful, engaging film can absolutely be deliberate rest. It may offer ideas and insights that eventually help us make connections we didn't see prior to viewing of the film; the key is to feed our minds well. Give it quality fuel and quality results have the possibility of being produced, even while we sleep. Recently, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang's new book Rest was released, and contained inside the covers is a wealth of research, seemingly infinite anecdotes from historical and current individuals that reveal the power of deliberate rest being incorporated into our daily lives. Throughout today's post, I will be sharing many different quotes, and unless otherwise attributed, they are pulled from the pages of Rest. As we begin 2017 and we look to the future we wish to build for ourselves, it may appear as though we have much to do in order to accomplish what we have placed on our list of resolutions or goals. But in order to be successful in whichever destination we pursue, the concept of quality over quantity guides the way. How is that possible? How can we do less and actually attain more? By tossing what the zeitgeist portrays as the "right way" to achieve success out with 2016. "Today, we treat being stressed and overworked as a badge of honor, a sign of seriousness and commitment; but this is a recent phenomenon, and it inverts traditional ideas of how leaders and professions should behave under pressure. For most of history, leaders were supposed to appear calm and unhurried; success began with self-mastery and self-control." ~For more in-depth discussion on each of the points discussed below, be sure to tune in to the podcast. Benefits: 1. Helps to organize your life 2. Cultivates calm in your life 3. Strengthens your will-power and self-control 4. Increases your confidence 5. Increases emotional intelligence and engagement 6. More time is given as boundaries are made firm and clear 7. Increases success and accomplishment, aiding you in reaching your full potential 8. Live a long, healthy, invigorating life 9. Helps you live a simply luxurious life "It creates a life that's rewarding while it's lived, a life that has purpose and pleasure, work and reward, in equal measure. And that life feels complete and well-spent at the end." How to welcome deliberate rest into your life: 1. Make rest a priority "Taking rest seriously also helps bring more of your life into clearer focus." 2. Spend only 4-5 hours each day doing strenuous work 3. Establish a consist morning routine "My morning is all about stilling the outside world so my mind can soar." —Scott Adams, the illustrator and creator of the comic strip Dilbert 4. Set clear boundaries between work and rest "A day that starts with work creates rest that can be enjoyed without guilt. When you start early, the rest you take is the rest you've earned." 5. Take regular walks 6. Nap regularly and nap well "The most obvious benefits of napping is that it increases alertness and decreases fatigue . . . but regular naps have other benefits . . . improve memory . . . [and] consolidate things you've just learned." 7. Enjoy a regular, deep night's sleep 8. Detach and take that vacation 9. Exercise regularly "At first, researchers mainly investigated the benefits of exercise for healthy aging, but studies now show that for people of any age, gender, or athletic ability, exercise can increase brain power, boost intelligence, and provide the stamina and psychological resilience necessary to do creative work." 10. Cultivate a hobby you love and that challenges you Perhaps when you read #2 on the list above, you said to yourself, nope, that will never happen, not in my world, not in the job I have to do every day to earn my paycheck. And on the surface, you are absolutely correct. But what if you could look at the job you go to each day and redesign your day? What if you could schedule your day so that you did tend to the most strenuous demands at the beginning and then schedule meetings, projects and activities toward the tail-end that allowed you to not tax your mind directly as much? Understandably, what job you do and for whom you work and the expectations will play a significant role. What I appreciated upon reading Rest is that it validated what I already felt regarding the productivity of my work. When I worked at my best, when I felt my most exhausted, it gave me a reason as to why. It helped me understand my mind, my body and the benefits of what I am doing and what I need to make sure I continue to do and what I can begin to let go of as it no longer serves me or the quality of life I am trying to cultivate. Saying no to what no longer serves the simply luxurious life you are building becomes easier when we have science to explain what works best, but we also have to understand what type of life we want to build, and when we know that and believe it to our core, the saying of "no" and the incorporation of deliberate rest into our lives becomes far easier. And that is when our lives begin to truly blossom. We don't have to look busy to gain approval. The gift of living well is that our lives often will look paradoxical: How can she/they/he live such a life and not be exhausted/stressed and have time to enjoy, play and partake in the pleasures as well? But the reality is, it is indeed possible when we choose to live consciously and thoughtfully. "A life that focuses on what matters most, makes time for rest, and declines unnecessary distractions may look simple on the outside, but from the inside it is rich and fulfilling." Deliberate rest paired with deliberate work is a partnership: "One provides the means to live, the other gives meaning to life". "When we treat rest as work's equal and partner, recognize it as a playground for the creative mind and springboard for new ideas, and it as an activity that we can practice and improve, we elevate rest into something that can help calm our days, organize our lives, give us more time and help us achieve more while working less." ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~15 Everyday Habits to Live a Life of Contentment ~10 Things People Who Have Found Contentment Understand About Uncertainty ~Relax: 21 Ways to Know You're Doing Just Fine in This Thing Called Life Petit Plaisir: ~Equipment silk pajamas, Lillian striped washed-silk pajamas - 50% off at Netaporter ~use promo code EXTRA40, at Equipmentfr.com SHOP Equipment Pajamas: [show_shopthepost_widget id="2336799"] Image: Vogue UK Download the Episode
