Aaron's Audio Edibles Track 18 is Viloent Femmes' 1981 self-titled album. Mike Hilbig returns with this record. Featuring infectious rock anthems, androgynous themes and a mastery of acoustic musicianship, we discuss how this little crew from Madison Wisconsin took a $10 gift from a supportive father, purchased the session time and resources necessary to convert it from a dream to reality. If you are not familiar with Violent Femmes, you will undoubtedly recognize a lot of these from your favorite movies, tv shows and even ballparks! #violentfemmes #blisterinthesun #additup #grosspointblank #kissoff #gonedaddygoneYUH Theme by David T and Mojo 3https://www.amazon.com/Insanity-Sobriety-Blues-David-Mojo3/dp/B091N8BJNBViolent Femmes (1981) on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/album/2G9onFLGqlMJd1ThYf0vIB?si=ZuF-pZx-S3mB5Oywrp8HfQJudgement Day and Other White Lies on AmazonJudgment Day & Other White Lies: Hilbig, Mike: 9781948692762: Amazon.com: BooksTrack List - Violent Femmes (1981)1. Among auspicious April events in rock 'n' roll history, April 13, 1983, is the date that Violent Femmes released their beloved, eponymous first album and gifted the world with Blister in the Sun, Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, and other instant classics. The album has ascended to the status of "generational hand-me-down" according to Violent Femmes founding member and our fellow Milwaukeean, Brian Ritchie. April 5, 1994 is the date that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain passed away. Both topics loom large in this conversation with Brian. Watch our VIDEO where Brian describes how Nirvana was selected to open for Violent Femmes in Austalia, and Kurt's ragged state of mind even in those early days. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/usGs3M3atlY Plus the Femmes are touring this year, so what better time re-share Brian's stories about his band living through every scene in This Is Spinal Tap in real life; their big break being discovered by The Pretenders while sidewalk busking in Milwaukee; and his 3-word secret to success..."Just keep going." Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album. Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential. This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale. Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics. Moments before doors opened on 2024's Taste of Randolph, Julie Darling (West Loop Community Organization President) and Kelli Packer (West Loop Community Organization Spokesperson) jumped in the car to talk about the 27th Taste of Randolph, its vendors, the music acts and where that “suggested donation” at the gate goes to… Sampled during the conversation: Food from Publican Quality Meats, Baked Cheese Haus and Matcha Cita. The two sets of sisters comprising Neptune's Core are on a creative roll. Since I last spoke with them, they nailed down their live show and their music continues to take chances and go to interesting places. I can only imagine what they'll be capable of by the time they can all legally vote. Give this band your ears. Neptune's Core has two new songs available for streaming that are worth your attention. Keep up with the band on Instagram (neptunes.core). To fuel our conversation, we met at Roti in Lincoln Park (1000 W. North Avenue). We sampled amazing menu items including the Mezza Protein Bowl (Chicken Roti, Harissa Chicken, Sumac Skirt Steak, Falafel, Mixed Greens, Saffron Rice, Purple Cabbage, Persian Cucumbers, Hummus, Tahini Sauce, and Roti Spice), the Rainbow Veggie Bowl (Roasted Vegetables, Saffron Rice, Purple Cabbage, Grape Tomatoes, Feta, Pickled Onions, Citrus Vinaigrette, Garlic Sauce, and Roti Spice) and the Roasted Veggie Pita (Double Roasted Vegetables, Angel's Bakery Pita, Purple Cabbage, Chickpea Salad, Roasted Corn, Pita Chips, Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, Garlic Sauce, and Roti Spice). The food was delicious, fresh and exactly what we wanted. We're grateful for the hospitality! ## The summer season at Ravinia is underway… and there's no place more comfortable to see outdoor shows. Monster Dogs Morning Monster Cafe with Steve Silver (Episode 958) They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I agree, especially if hot dogs are involved. Steve Silver, Chicago's legendary lover, fighter, doorman, and raconteur, joined me at the Morning Monster Cafe (Monster Dogs food truck) outside Cobra Lounge (235 N. Ashland). I had the Daywalker to get my day started the right way. It's a monster, but in the best possible way: A hot dog (or breakfast sausage) nestled in a French toast New England roll topped with bacon, blueberry jam, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and a sweet cereal milk mustard. Joining us for the chat is a returning favorite, Chef Jason Gilmore. Besides being the chef at Cobra Lounge, his vision and love for hot dogs led him to run the Monster Dogs food truck. (Disclaimer: We're not in the car for this one, which allowed for the consumption of beer/spirits.) Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should Cicada-infused Malört is a real thing, and it's being served at Noon Whistle's Lombard Brewpub (800 E. Roosevelt). I sat down with Marketing Director Joey Giardiniera to talk about this very Chicago, mostly-appalling, concept. And yes, we sample the product during the recording. THE RESULTS WILL SHOCK YOU. (Sorry: Clickbait. Not that shocking.) And don't let the cicadas fool you: Noon Whistle is a fantastic brewery. Jamie and Deb of Leo Graphics Chicago (4200 W. Diversey) join me for conversation and food from the remarkable Hermosa Restaurant (4356 W. Armitage). We're joined by Hermosa Restaurant owner/visionary Ethan Lim. Ethan has built up Hermosa on his own terms, and his warmth and authenticity are present inside the space and in every bite he prepares. As we talk, we dig into the sandwiches that everyone is talking about: Hermosa's Cambodian fried chicken sandwiches. Before you even listen or watch, take the time to order ahead and get one of them in your belly this week. This is a “top five” sandwich for Chicago; no exaggeration. Ethan's story, history and perspectives are refreshing, and I think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say. As for the Leo Graphics team: Jamie and Deb are a blast to hang out with. We talked about their independent print shop business, which fuels and supports the local music community. They explain the process and economics behind their work in making record jackets (they share highlights from the likes of King Gizzard and Vortis), and the benefits of focusing on smaller-batch orders. They also shared examples of the work they do on physical records; if you're watching the video version, you'll love seeing what they did for artists like Naked Raygun and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. The Leo Graphics chat came to a crescendo when Jamie and Deb show what they brought for “show and tell”: Car Con Carne stickers of all sizes & a cool banner! They do fantastic work, and if you're looking for print work: signs, album jackets, decals, drum heads, stickers … whatever … give them a shout! Jamie and Deb are also in 13 Monsters. Brian Ritchie, bassist for the folk punk band the Violent Femmes, joins host Kenneth Womack on this episode to chat about his first Beatles records and the 40th anniversary of the Femmes' debut album. Ritchie co-founded the Violent Femmes with percussionist Victor DeLorenzo in 1981, and the duo were later joined by singer-songwriter Gordon Gano. Ritchie came up with band's distinctive name on a whim, employing it during their early days playing in Milwaukee's coffee houses. In August 1981, the Violent Femmes were discovered performing on a street corner in front of the Oriental Theatre by James Honeyman-Scott, the guitarist for the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde invited the Femmes to play an acoustic set prior to the Pretenders' show that night. In 1983, the Violent Femmes released their self-titled debut album, which emerged as a key soundtrack for the burgeoning alternative and college-oriented rock movements. The inaugural LP featured many of the band's best-known songs, including “Blister in the Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone.” The album became the Femmes' most successful LP, eventually earning platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the years, the Femmes have recorded 10 studio albums, including Hallowed Ground (1984), The Blind Leading the Naked (1986), and Why Do Birds Sing? (1991). The group is widely considered to be a key influence on the 1980s and 1990s alternative rock scene. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Perhaps no band benefited from the beauty of the mix tape better than the Violent Femmes. However, you could argue that no other band led to the proliferation of the art form of creating a mix tape more than the Femmes. The simpleness of song structure (and production) and the adolescent lyrical content (one reviewer calling it "uber-elementary sing-alongs") were absolutely {chef's kiss} to represent frustrated, angsty teenagers of the 1980s and '90s. It makes sense -- chief songwriter Gordon Gano began writing much of these tunes when he was 15, after all. Their debut 1983 album includes classics like "Blister in the Sun," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Kiss Off," "Add It Up" and more -- all songs that hit the nerve of what it means to be a young person. It's no surprise that the Violent Femmes can still be heard on "mix tapes" (aka playlists) even today.

This week, we're adding up all our grudges, and considering books and pop culture picks where the addition may be just too much to handle. Plus, we're using Excel for our mental health, planning our villainous futures, and relating hard to Steve Buscemi from Billy Madison. We also get a visit from Louise the Podcat, who reminds Amy how stupid human skin is. Listen to "Add It Up," the song from Violent Femmes that inspired this week's theme. We surprise each other with our picks, talk about why we like them, and give you unexpected recommendations for every reading taste. Along the way, we share embarrassing stories, pitch amazing-slash-crackpot business ideas, implicate ourselves in future crimes, check in on our Podcats, and so much more. ⦁ The Georgia Thunderbolts, Take It Slow ⦁ Dust Radio, Dead Man's Crawl ⦁ Dirty Honey, California Dreamin' ⦁ Violent Femmes, Waiting For the Bus⦁ Violent Femmes, Add it Up ⦁ Eli Paperboy Reed, To Be Alone With You ⦁ The Wallflowers, Maybe Your Heart's Not in It No More ⦁ The Wallflowers, Roots and Wings ⦁ Eric Roebuck, Need A Change ⦁ Rosedale Junction, The Blizzard of '73 ⦁ Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul, Camouflage of Righteousness⦁ Donna Herula, Can't Wait To See My Baby

Indie legend Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes appears on the latest installment of Gone In 30 Minutes to chat about life on the big, blue(ish) marble. A seminal figure of punk, Ritchie thinks back to his upbringing in Milwaukee, the band’s…let’s say…less-than-ideal deal with Slash Records and the incessant nature of music itself. And Ritchie hasn’t stopped either—in addition to curating for annual music and arts festival MONA FOMA, in his homeland of Tasmania, he’s been broadcasting daily performances so we never lose touch of that “American Music.”

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE This week is all about country music, so I thought I'd discuss one of my top ten favorite bands of all time: Violent Femmes. Yes, that's right. The Femmes. And country music. They link. Seriously. Read on, and then go listen to the three albums I'm featuring this week, and it'll hit you like a pickup truck on fire. Those of you who know anything about the Femmes probably only know the big party hits from their debut 1983 self-titled album, like “Blister in the Sun” or “Add It Up”. That album was a blast of acoustic punk that launched the Femmes as one more post-punk band rewriting the rules of the genre. And if that's how you know them, then there are at least three things you probably don't know: 1. Their highest charting single was “American Music” from 1991's Why Do Birds Sing? (Which also had an awesome cover of Culture Club's “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?”) 2. They are still around, and in fact released their latest album just last year, which sounds a fuckload like their early stuff. 3. They went through a country music phase. For realz. Their 2nd, 3rd& 4th albums were predominantly country. You could call it alt country (before the term existed), southern gothic, freak folk, country rock or folk punk. Point is, it ain't just acoustic punk. Listen to almost anything from Hallowed Ground, The Blind Leading the Naked, or 3, and you're going to hear country music. “Country Death Song”, “Jesus Walking on the Water”. “Old Mother Reagan”, “Breakin' Hearts”, “Cold Canyon”. “Fat”, “Lies”. Straight-up country twang, y'all. Not that that's all they did, then or ever. But the fact that they went there in their own special way – that fucking rocks. The Femmes have sunk so deep into my subconscious that it's hard to pinpoint how they've influenced me. There's a chance that – like with the Beatles or Prince – their influence is somewhere in every song I've ever written. Throwing in a rogue lyric here & there to keep things honest & fresh. A vocal delivery that runs the range from whispery to strident to plaintive to balls out abrasive, but always with emotion. Unafraid to get negative but still keep it popping. There are so many songs I can use as an example, but DUH I have to go with the one that was named after possibly my favorite Femmes song (from Hallowed Ground): REC - “Never Tell” (from the album Distance To Empty) Listen to the Femmes' “Never Tell” too and see if you can find any parallels. What songs of the Femmes do you know and/or love? Does this make you want to go deeper into their catalogue? Do you prefer straight-up country music? Or do you hate it all? Join LMarie and Elayna as Greys gives us all a small break from the emotional drama and more of the humor relief we needed. The cast reminds us why being nerdy is cool and things heat up between Ameila and Link. This is a conversation you don’t want to miss because Tom lets Owen have it! Tune in! Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama television series that premiered on American Broadcasting Company (ABC) as a mid-season replacement on March 27, 2005, and is currently in its 15th season. The series focuses on the fictional lives of surgical interns and residents as they gradually evolve into seasoned doctors, while trying to maintain personal lives and relationships. The title is a play on Gray's Anatomy, a human anatomy textbook by Henry Gray. The show's premise originated with Shonda Rhimes, who serves as an executive producer, along with Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Krista Vernoff, Rob Corn, Mark Wilding, and Allan Heinberg. The series was created to be racially diverse, utilizing a color-blind casting technique. Although the show is set in Seattle, it is primarily filmed in Los Angeles, California. The show was originally to be called Complications following the obviously complicated medical procedures and personal lives of the cast. The series follows Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), the daughter of an esteemed general surgeon named Ellis Grey, following her acceptance into the residency program at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. During her tenure as a resident, Grey works alongside fellow doctors Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), and George O'Malley (T. R. Knight), who each struggle to balance their personal lives with the hectic work and training schedules assigned to them. They are overseen during their internship by Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), a senior resident who works beneath Grey's love-interest Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), the head of neurosurgery; Yang's fiancee Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), the head of cardio; and Ellis Grey's ex-lover Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.), the Chief of Surgery. The residents are later joined by Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew), former Mercy-West residents who join Seattle Grace following an administrative merger in the sixth season. Throughout the first six seasons O'Malley, Burke and Stevens all depart the series which has become very controversial in the media over the life-span of the series. In addition to Shepherd, Webber, and Burke, the surgical wing is primarily supervised by Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), as head of trauma; Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), as head of pediatric surgery; Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), a resident who later becomes head of orthopedics; Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith), as head of cardio; Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), as head of plastics; Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), as head of OB/GYN, neonatal, and fetal surgery; Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), as head of cardio; and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Derek's sister who is hired to replace him as head of neuro. Derek is killed in the series' eleventh season. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app · The Colin and Samir Podcast: The Colin and Samir Podcast hosted by LA - based friends and filmmakers Colin and Samir takes a look into what it’s like to make creativity your career. https://open.spotify.com/show/5QaSbbv2eD4SFrlFR6IyY7?si=Dj3roVoJTZmOime94xhjng
This week on the podcast, it's the end of season two! On today's episode, I'm talking about how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, especially when we show up and don't break the chain. We end up creating a portfolio of work that says more collectively than any one piece of it ever could. Drew has to remind Chance that we have local leagues to cover, Cheering Fans are heard loud and clear, the occasional song is broken out into and all this happens while the lads try out a new recording system. All this and a NEW APE CONTEST!!! Fun on a bun!
